- Joel (10/5): Incomparable flat at the heart of Athens - I can't use too many superlatives for this flat - it was not only the nicest accommodation I had in Greece, but it was the best flat I've rented in all my trips to Europe, and this was trip number 12. This was exactly what I needed - a comfortable, lovely flat, within walking distance of the Metro (Victoria Station), in a charming old neighborhood just a few blocks from the National Archaeological Museum. It felt almost luxurious for me as a solo traveller, and I see this flat as even better for a couple or a small family. Also, I can't overstate the helpfulness of the hosts. I had a lot of questions, specifically about where to find good luggage, shoes, ferry tickets etc., and they were able to help me. After driving around Greece for a week, this was a perfect place to relax, and then explore Athens at leisure. There were also plenty of supplies and appliances, which made it easy to do some shopping at the nearby markets and create a pleasant domestic experience during what would otherwise be a hectic adventure. I want to emphasize that this is absolutely NOT a criticism of the flat. However, you should not rent a place in Exarchia without doing your homework. This is an area in rapid transition, and if you are offended by "tourist go home" graffiti, you will be taken aback. I'm from Los Angeles, so I am familiar with these issues, and in fact I selected Exarchia for personal reasons - it was convenient to the friends I know in Athens, and as a political, multiethnic part of the city, it reminded me of where I grew up in Los Angeles. There are responsible ways to support a neighborhood like this without exploiting it, and I did my best to fit in, to present a good impression to the other residents of the building and the neighbors. I have seen many cities go through this transition, and the difference between a tourist and a traveller is how you integrate yourself into it; Athens is a place overwhelmed with tourism, so good manners will go a long way to improving your experience of it.
