Guest Reviews
- Jan (6/5): Mediocre . - Location No lift . Very poor approach roads narrow with many deep potholes. Facilities generally dated.
- Keith (8/5): -
- Richie (10/5): -
- Mark (10/5): -
- Mark (7/5): Mixed gevoel. - Mooie locatie, prettig personeel.
- Alex (10/5): -
- Catherine (6/5): The gardens were the best bit, awful food and this hotel needs a refurb. - The gardens were the best part of the stay. The food was awful, the interior of the hotel was poor and the rooms were in need of a refurb. The carpet in the corridor to the hotel was disgusting and smelt so bad of dogs. This is a dog friendly hotel and we had dogs but I have never experienced such a bad smell of dogs in a hotel.
- Dudley (9/5): Calm, pleasant, excellent staff and bar and restaurant very good. - Everything A little off the beaten track!
- Stevie (9/5): Our stay was wonderful - thank you. - Wonderful staff, beautiful location and superb room. We didn’t eat in the restaurant so can’t comment about that. The small lanes to get there 😂.
- Nicholson (4/5): Terrible room, will never stay here again. - Dinner was fair, the garlic bread did not really taste of garlic. Other guests finished dinner and left, however when we finished I asked if I needed to sign anything or do they just put it on our room bill, Earlier having a drink in the bar I just signed for them and it was put on the room bill. The reply was I'll just check, then he said No you will have to pay now, which I found strange as no one else had paid. I have stayed in many hotels and drinks / food were always put on my room bill which would be paid when I left.
Our room was terrible, there was no air-con and the heat was at times unbearable, even with the window wide open, the view from the window was of two large oil tanks which are in an enclosed court yard. The building exterior inside the court yard, was in a very poor state with ivy climbing up drain pipes up to the roof.
The curtains had missing rings holding them up. The net curtain was obviously old and at least four inches too short. In the bathroom the toilet roll holder is literally on the wall behind you and level with the bottom of the cistern, so the only place to leave the toilet roll was on the floor. The toilet seat was loose so you had to be careful not to fall off.
The wash basin was really small, and the plug was useless. I filled the sink to have a shave and by the time I had applied shaving cream the sink was completely empty! I had to leave the tap running while shaving. The extractor in the bathroom did not work, and there was no window.
If I was running the hotel I would never have put a guest in that room!
The public areas were fine and looked as the photos on the website, however the room was nothing like the photos, It is in real need of updating, we were glad to leave!

- Vincent (10/5): Another fantastic stay at lord haldon - Excellent property and location and staff are amazing 🤩 so nice and helpful very professional a big thankyou to all
- Graham (6/5): Beds were comfy and spacious. Staff were lovely. - Great staff. Lots of variety. The shower still had previous guests hair on the wall. Water took ages to warm up so basically had a Luke warm
Shower.
- tracy (8/5): Lovely but too hot in the rooms - Beautiful surroundings
Friendly helpful staff
Very clean Room was too hot and fan was too small for room
- vrooom (9/5): Really out in the country - Clean quiet comfortable
Wonderful staff
Great food - breakdast & dinner
Nice big room and bath
Really out in the country No A/C during a very hot spell, not even an offered fan.

- Westlands (8/5): Great location for a relaxing stay combines with good facilities - We received a warm welcome on our arrival at this lovely country hotel situated in pleasant garden parkland. The access road was severely pot-holed and one had to take care. Our room was a superior King room and after climbing some 40 steps we were pleased to find a large bedroom with fine views over the garden. The bed was comfortable a sofa plus two tub chairs allowed for relaxation. The bathroom was astounding, clearly recently remodelled with ceramic tiles the considerable space allowed for a feature bath, toilet, shower and sink. Unfortunately, the design took preference over practicality, the water pressure was insufficient to provide a hot bath without waiting for almost a ¾ an hour and the fantastic shower did not deliver more than a sprinkle. There were no toiletries which had to be requested.
Breakfast was very good and well cooked, plenty of choice of pastries, juices and fruit. Coffee from the machine was not to my taste but acceptable none-the less. The evening menu left much to be desired with quite an ordinary menu requiring little cullinary skill.
The hotel offers an EV charge point which is a strong feature unfortunately it was a three pin plug point version and I only had the wrong cable! Poor water pressure spoiled the effect of the bath and shower both of which were of very good quality. Some closer attention to detail regarding provision of toiletries and rooms should be made up (refreshed) daily without having to request such from reception. Also the evening dinner menu needs to be reviewed as both selection and quality left much to be desired
- Sandra (9/5): Great value stop over, with lovely staff. - Excellent location for us to break the journey from Cornwall back home. The staff were lovely, plenty of parking space and the grounds were extensive. It was dog friendly and the food was great. Great value for money as we only had the basic rooms.
- Alison (10/5): - Lovely staff! Excellent chips! Great cat that apparently doesn't belong to the hotel
- chris (10/5): - We had our wedding reception there. So it really lovely to go back and remimis about our wedding day. Noisy people next door had the TV on really loud
- GEORGIOS (6/5): -
- simon (5/5): Not great - The view outstanding Service very slow
- pat (8/5): Very enjoyable - Lovely hotel very well run, staff friendly and efficient. Beautiful gardens and scenary Nothing
- susan (8/5): Wonderful place to stay in fabulous setting outside Exeter at half the price. - Grand building in glorious grounds with comfortable room , good simple dinner at an excellent price. Nothing
- Denise (6/5): An overall pleasant stay and warm welcome. - Breakfast ok. Beautiful location but access difficult. The evening meal menu was disappointing if staying for several nights.
- Dawn (8/5): Lovely hotel with excellent staff in a beautiful location. - Loved the old building and the stunning location. Had a room with a beautiful view. A generous amount of tea, coffee & milk plus biscuits.
All the staff were so welcoming and thoughtful. The drive up to the hotel has many big, deep potholes, you wouldn’t want to drive a sports car along it! I believe this is going to be resurfaced at some point.
The room decor was nice but tired and needs a little freshen up but it was clean.
- Connor (10/5): -
- Brian (10/5): - The friendly team and atmosphere.
Professional can do attitude.
The team you need when you need it the most. 5*****
Will definitely stay again.
- David (5/5): Good value but all quite basic - Nice location. Felt tired
- Ronald (4/5): Won’t stay again - View, gardens Pothole road, narrow, food
- Phillip (9/5): Most comfortable - Everything worked and it was quiet and peaceful. The staff were welcoming and kindly upgraded me to a double bed. Some of the approach roads were scarily narrow but that isn’t the hotel’s fault.
- Michael (8/5): Very comfortable Good food very friendly staff - Lovely location although a bit remote. Staff very friendly especially the Resturant Manager Very clean comfortable rooms Location too remote Would have liked the dog friendly rooms to be on ground floor
- David (9/5): We were walking the Eden Way pilgrimage route & it made an excellent stopover. - Staff & service excellent. Lovely quiet & scenic location Nothing
- Andy (9/5): - Location Road to Hotel narrow. pot holes
- Paolo (8/5): -
- Andrew (7/5): A nice hotel in gorgeous Devon countryside with lovely food. - The room was a good size, and the bed was very comfortable. The food at dinner was very good. It's a fairly simple menu - pub grub really, but all very nicely done. The hotel is in a lovely location in the Devon countryside. Staff service was very good. The hotel is a bit 'tired' looking - especially the carpets.
- Haynes (7/5): Expensive for the type type of place -
- Maxine (8/5): Great hotel in a beautiful location with fantastic staff. - Staff were extremely helpful with all aspects of my stay. Some areas were a little tired looking (carpets in hallway and stairs). Heating seemed to be on full in the corridor to the room but it was a warm day.
- sharon (10/5): Tranquility.Beautiful Setting Fabulous Staff. - Staff were really helpful and genuinally lovely people.
Everything was clean .
Bar area was cosy.
Setting was beautiful and peaceful Food in the restuarant in my opinion wasn't the greatest but priced accordingly.
Rooms a little outdated but the price for the room was fair.
- William (7/5): - The hotel is in a beautiful location, lovely gardens, magnificent views and great walks nearby. The room and facilities were fine, but all a bit tired
- Emma (7/5): -
- James (8/5): Good room, great value - Great setting, beautiful surroundings and very friendly and helpful staff. Good room for the price The single track road leading to the hotel was full of deep potholes which visitors should beware of especially when arriving after dark.
- Shirley (8/5): Good value for money - Excellent for walking the dog.
Roast dinner wonderful.
Bar man friendly.
Manager very helpful.
- Tim37 (9/5): - Lovely quiet location
The Irish Barman/head waiter (sorry didn't get his name) was excellent Nothing
- Dean HD (1/5): - The staff were friendly
Bed was comfortable. Most annoyingly I selected the accommodation based on their claim to have EV charging - it was a 13amp outdoor socket.
The decor is very B&M, the sort of wall art of deer in snow with glitter. Very obvious fake flowers and bad taste in decor.
If you prefer veggie food, the dinner option is a plant based burger - that's it.
Breakfast very underwhelming.
- Paula (6/5): Lovely staff and views, poor restaurant experience again. - The staff are lovely as always and the views wonderful. It is clean and warm. However, the restaurant is very variable and usually not good. On this occasion 12 April, I waited an hour for my dinner as did the other guests, and when it arrived (roast) it was old and had clearly been sitting around for hours.
- RICHARD (9/5): Excellent - Dinner and Breakfast was excellent and the staff including Harry particularly were excellent Up on arrival we found the rooms very hot and stuffy and had to open the windows for some time
- Michael (9/5): Honest opinion - We were in room 7.
It was a good size and clean.
The bed was comfy.
All staff were polite and professional Nothing to dislike
- Suzanne (8/5): great location if visiting canonteigh falls - room with a lovely view of the countryside
- Julian (9/5): Stunning location, exceptional service and perfect for those travelling with dogs. - The hotel is located in stunning landscape and the ground are beautiful. Staff were exceptional and incredibly accommodating of our friend's dogs. The rooms are well appointed for the classification and the hotel has great facilities. This isn't a compliant but an observation as some of the interior facilities, bar, restaurant, lounge etc, are now quote dated and would benefit from an upgrade.
- Mike (10/5): A warm welcome and genuine hospitality - Really friendly and welcoming staff Nothing
- Andrew & Sue (9/5): Nice stay at very reasonable price - Location was lovely and peaceful. Room was very comfortable. Dog friendly hotel Dog friendly hotel but only in bars and dog friendly room. Could not eat there as would have to leave the dog or eat separately.
- John (9/5): -
- Verity (8/5): - Dog friendly and peaceful country location
- anthony (5/5): The staff were very friendly and did there best to welcome you. Evening menu was pub grub. - Location lovely. Drive full of potholes. They were understaffed. Breakfast was chaotic. Rooms tired.
- Liz (9/5): Relaxing and calm location in the countryside - The property is set in lovely grounds and has wonderful wide views of the countryside. The rooms are comfortable and spotlessly clean. The breakfast dining room is spacious and everything is well appointed. The gardens are pretty. Nothing.
- Joanna (8/5): - The staff were super friendly and couldn’t do enough for us
- Moorhead (10/5): - Everything was so good and clean loved it
- Tony (8/5): Nice hotel - Good location
Pleasant staff
Nice room Lord halden burger which was disappointing, no excuse.but issue resolved.
- Alison (7/5): - Location was beautiful but access road was full of potholes The hotel is very tired and in need of a complete refurbishment.
- Judith (8/5): - Friendliness. Pothole approach road.
- Derek (10/5): Perfect - Excellent Breakfast and diner and a very comfortable room
- Chris (5/5): Dissappointed - The barman qas very sociable and informative. On a night with few guests we were put in a very small room overlooking a staff car park. We could have been given a different room. Possibly upgraded? We would have liked breakfast but the restaurant closed at 1000hrs. We went particularly to run the local park run and didn't get back till 1005. Then we had to rush to check out 1100. We normally use travelogue for our parkrun tourism, and will probably return to them if we visit this area again.
- trevor (8/5): Stayed before and would again - Rooms good, service very good,
Just right for our needs Signage to rooms not clear
- Martha (5/5): Great Sunday lunch, lovely staff but won't stay again. - the hotel is very nice and the staff very friendly and accommodating. The Sunday lunch was amazing. We were awakened at 8.30am on a Sunday morning by a very noisy Bible group who took over the entire hotel. We therefore couldn't even find a quiet spot to have our coffee while we waited for our friends to arrive for lunch. Saturday night residents should be made aware of this.
- Diane (9/5): - Peace and quiet Place needs work doing
- Steve (9/5): -
- peter (6/5): - Difficult and poor roads to get to the hotel, not the fault of the hotel of course.
- Sheila (8/5): Pleasant - Good food service great T v not working and a dog was whining for hours in a room close by
- Anthony (7/5): Really lovely grounds. But if you don’t want to be in bed by 10pm don’t go - The grounds were beautiful. Lovely place. We stayed in room 3. There was a constant noise like a fan as running somewhere. It was hard to sleep with it going on.
The bar and restaurant closed far too early. 12 of us book the restaurant for 8pm. Only to be told the chef finished at 8.30. And could we all hurry up and order. Could not have desert. As the chef when home. The bar shut at 10 pm sharp. We order drinks. Then was told to move to our side the bar to finish our drinks. Then turn the light off. On us. At 10,30.
- Sophie (7/5): -
- Sandra (9/5): - Lovely hotel in the heart of the country, but not far from Exeter It was all very nice
- Helene (10/5): - Very friendly staff that made you feel welcome -
- Richard (9/5): - The room and bathroom were huge. The beds very comfortable. Frankly for the money it exceeded expectations. Nothing
- trevor (9/5): Ideal - Room was good, bed comfortable.
All facilities I expected. Shower could be better.
Access road needs attention
- Flame (10/5): -
- Hubert (10/5): - Super Personal, gutes Essen und Frühstück, Zimmer sehr ruhig und hundefreundlich. Wirklich toller Aufenthalt.
- Bee (8/5): Nice hotel - Good location, nice sized room, clean and very helpful staff. Bed was not so comfortable on this stay. Lots of doors banging from other people.
- Jonathan (8/5): - A lovely clean, quiet hotel with lovely staff. Heating was not working although we didn't need it as we were war.m. No lift but again we didn't need one. Should be clear when booking to put if taking dog as hotel unaware we were bringing ours.
- Joanne (9/5): Good stopover for visits to Devon. - We stayed in Room 6 which was an excellent size. However, peeking into other rooms when they were being cleaned showed that standard rooms are smaller. Still the bed was comfortable, which is a huge thing for me. The shower was good. The bath, which were didn’t use, reminded me of a birthing pool as it was that big. This hotel loves dogs, as was shown when our two dogs were fussed and cuddled while we ate dinner on the first night. I had Beef Lasagne. What I thought was a cheese topping, turned out to be béchamel sauce. My husband had Chicken Tikka Masala, which looked like a microwave special. Day 2 was a Sunday so roast dinners only. I had gammon, which was a bit tough and the roasties could have been crisper.
Member of staff, Izzy was brilliant, along with the Irishman. The walls are thin. I could hear our puppy barking from down the corridor.
- Adrian (8/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): An enjoyable stay while visiting family nearby. - Convenient location for a Christmas stay with relatives who live nearby. Good facilities. Friendly staff. Excellent breakfasts. Room was too warm for us. But appreciate that other occupants may like it warmer than we do.
- Jonathan (10/5): -
- Andy (10/5): Perfect. - Absolutely first class! Staff 10/10
Hotel 10/10
Service 10/10
Food 10/10
Would recommend anyone to stay here, particularly if accompanied by a pooch, probably THE most dog friendly hotel my Basset and I have stayed.
Paul has a fantastic team and leads by example from the front. Everyone here is on the ball and excellence in service is clearly the priority.
10/10 all round!
- Peter (9/5): Comfortable room in great surroundings - The Hotel is a very smart country house in the beautiful Devon Countryside away from the traffic noise. We didn't really get to try all the facilities or explore the area due to the nature of our visit but would happily go back when we have chance. The access roads are very narrow and in poorly maintained.
- Jonathan (8/5): Convenient for an overnight stay - Good facilities and spacious and well equipped bedrooms.
- Alistair (7/5): - Pretty location The Sunday church service at 9am blasted through the walls. Do not book on a Saturday night if you plan a peaceful Sunday.
- Carol M (9/5): - Very comfortable and clean, staff very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. Lovely location. The drive is a bit bumpy!
- Anastasia (9/5): -
- Ellie (5/5): Lovely people working there, but very noisy. - Lovely staff and setting was pretty nice. It was so noisy. The first night I had to ask to be moved at around 9:30pm as I felt like I was practically in the bar it was awful. Then on Sunday there was like some sort of band playing in the morning.
- Charlotte (10/5): -
- Rich (10/5): friendliest hotel ever - the most friendly staff ive ever met . would definitely stay again. nothing
- Lynne (10/5): good hotel will use again - good staff always attentive nothing
- Stephen (6/5): Very Pleasant - Nice comfortable hotel and we enjoyed dinner
- Jane (8/5): Will definitely be going back for a tranquil weekend! - How remote it was, so peaceful and the staff were exceptional nothing was too much trouble! Very reasonable price and Really friendly! Will definitely be going back Nothing!
- Michael (10/5): Will be back - Excellent rooms and facilities
Paul and issi staff were very exceptional Nothing
- Maria (9/5): A hidden gem in Haldon. - What a hidden gem! Amidst the forest. Comfortable. Friendly staff. Good food. Great value. I was so impressed that I'm looking to hold wellness and workplace productivity events inspired by the power of nature there. Thanks to Wayne, Paul and the team. A couple of minor hiccups with one main meal were soon resolved.
- Susan (9/5): - Situation of hotel. Good food, pleasant polite staff. Radiator in room not working
- Peter (8/5): - The cooked full English was a bit skimpy. Ie only one item of each component (1 egg 1 sausage etc) . Seemed a bit mean. Otherwise very tasty.
- Emma (7/5): -
