Guest Reviews
- David (1/5): We want our money back for failure of our contract with you - The place was closed and we then had to find fresh accommodation Having paid for the booking now having to get our money back.
- Brendan (9/5): Happy - Brick feast was good and chef cooked what ever we wanted.
- Joanne (8/5): Very pleasant place to rest your head - Breakfast service was from 7.30am, but I needed to leave earlier than that each morning, so the lovely staff arranged for a breakfast sandwich to be ready for me to take with me, which was very kind of them. The last day I was able to have breakfast in the hotel, but the evening staff had arranged for continental breakfast...the breakfast staff, who I believe was the owner, did offer to cook me something which was nice of him, and the exceptional sandwiches the other two days made up for it...just a miscommunication.
The room was across the courtyard from the pub, which was unexpected but nice, and had ample free parking right outside of the building. My room had a bath, rather than a shower, which again was unexpected and relaxing for me, but might not suit everyone. The bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows, nice quality bedding and towels.
Although the pub feels rural and was very quiet, there are plenty of local amenities; Oakham is only a 10 minute drive, Stamford about the same, and exactly 5 minutes to A1 Northbound which was great. Not so much dislikes, but I arrived after a long day intending to eat in the restaurant to find that they don't serve food on a Monday, so I had to go out and find food. The staff did say I could get a takeaway delivered.
The room was lovely, but did have a few spider carcasses, and the windows were a bit rickety, but nothing that detracted from the stay.
I never yet found the wifi password, but to be fair, I forgot to ask; I'm sure it would have been forthcoming if I had
- Tim (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hatton (8/5): Very good - Food was excellent. Bedroom could have had a little bar of soap etc. Also would have preferred a comfortable chair.
- Steven (9/5): Friendly and welcoming with delicious food - Lovely place, with the friendliest staff and delicious food. Extremely welcoming Needs a little investment in the bathrooms
- Roy (8/5): Nice village pub wtth Real Ale and very friendly staff. Good breakfast - Nice village pub wtth Real Ale and very friendly staff
- Louise (8/5): A nice find, we would be very happy to return. - We were made to feel welcome and the service was friendly and efficient. The beer was very well kept. The breakfast hot food was excellent.
- Hayman (7/5): Good - Pillows on the beds we're not comfortable at all, need replacing, because of them i had an awful sleep. Everything else was great. Food was awesome also 😋 👌
- Ananda (7/5): Lovely staff, great location and an excellent cooked breakfast. - The property was lovely and clean, the staff were really helpful and friendly. It was in a great location and my room was warm and comfortable. My room was next to staff offices / kitchens, which meant I was woken up at around 6 or 7am both mornings. Which ideal for a relaxing stay. Id also say that having breakfast close at 9-9.30am on a weekend is quite early as well. Completely expected for a weekday, but again when you’re away for a relaxing weekend it’s not the best.
- Lucy (8/5): Lovely simple place with excellent food and very friendly staff - Lovely staff and excellent food
- Debbie (7/5): Good - Country pub close to Rutland Water
- Mairi (8/5): Very good - Generous breakfast and charming host.
- Graham (8/5): Lovely interesting inn with lovely food and close to Rutland water - Lovely interesting inn with lovely food and close to Rutland water Nothing
- Lesley (7/5): Steer clear of Burleigh Horse trials week, prices extortionate - Forget the previous reviews the new landlady has only been there 4 months and is trying to turn things around. Staff were lovely, food was good, plenty of choice at breakfast The rooms and bathroom were tired and on the small side. She plans a refurb over winter. At the moment the rooms have no Wi-Fi, not a problem if you enough data on your phone
- Harry (9/5): Superb -
- Fi (9/5): Excellent service throughout. - Staff were incredibly helpful throughout our stay. Any issues were sorted out very quickly. Food was excellent. The Chef really knows how to produce lovely food and it was very hot. We were offered bacon rolls to take into Burghley Horse Trials and they opened up early for breakfast to help us. Fresh milk was available for tea in the room. They could not do enough to make our stay comfortable. A small fridge in each room would be very helpful and there was certainly room for it.
- Sean (5/5): Great location, slightly over priced - Location Value for money
- Rosalind (7/5): A functional stay on the way up to Scotland - Breakfast was good No Wi-Fi, the over the bath shower was very hard to use with no wall fitting for the shower head or curtain to stop splashing.
- Patricia (9/5): Superb -
- Chris (8/5): Very good - The room was tired but clean and had everything we needed. The gentleman that served us breakfast was super friendly and explained that the pub had just been taken over within the last few months and had been left in a state by the previous owners. The new owner was now in the process of updating the pub and guest accommodation. The breakfast was delicious, the selection of food on offer was fantastic. The full English was one of the best I have ever tasted. I have no doubt that the new owner will breathe new life back in this old pub.
- Antony (6/5): Pleasant enough, but overpriced for standard of the room - Excellent location, very friendly and helpful staff, good food and great breakfast Bedroom was a little tired, and there was a smell of dogs, fan didn't work in bathroom
Food was good, but limited choice on the day we stayed
- Andy (8/5): Nice British Inn. - Lovely British Inn with separate rooms to the rear. Good breakfast. Our room was upstairs and partially in the roof so bathroom had no space for a stand up shower.
- Helen (4/5): Disappointing - Well located for Stamford and surrounding countryside Room was poor, L shaped but no light in one half, only wall lights in the other. On the ground floor but had no blinds so felt had to keep the curtains closed. Lacked things you would expect such as a bathroom bin, luggage stand, hair dryer.
Breakfast seemed chaotic, no menus, lack of bowls, plates, and very limited food choices.
- Robert (9/5): Excellent place to stay with good food, good service through our whole trip. - Staff were very helpful from arrival all the way through to our departure.
They asked for what we wanted and then provided as requested.
Rooms were clean tidy and as would be expected with what we wanted. There wasn't anything in particular we didn't like.
- Nigel (7/5): Good -
- Sarah (6/5): Pleasant -
- Duncan (6/5): Pleasant - It has a good location for Rutland Water I understand it is under new management and the rooms are clean but not what I would think is £170 a night B&B
- Neil (5/5): Didn’t eat at property there wasn’t enough meat free options or fish dishes - Breakfast was good young lady who served was very pleasant The room was dated and the beds were very noisy
- Helen (8/5): Fabulous location for Rutland waters - Fabulous Location for discovering Rutland waters . Saved £15 on parking each day . Service at breakfast was excellent. Staff are keen to improve and listened to our suggestions. Pub was busy in the eve and had a nice atmosphere. Communication prior to our stay was poor. We are keen cyclists and just wanted to know if there was a secure place to leave our bikes at night. We left messages on booking.com / phone message / asked when we arrived / asked later behind the bar. In the end, the chef said we could leave them in the storeroom - thank you chef.
This is the perfect location for cyclists - if you get it right, this place will be amazing.
- Paul (9/5): Superb - The staff were very polite, professional and accommodating. Great breakfasts. Excellent location for walking around Rutland Water. Could not use the restaurant on the night of our stay as the Chef was unwell. But the staff went out of their way to ensure we could get a reservation near by
- Frances (7/5): Good -
- Francis (8/5): Very good - Not serving food on the evening I was there meant driving to another pub. It would have been good to know they were not doing evening meals on prior to booking.
- Lindi (6/5): Pleasant -
- Myra (8/5): Wonderful all round stay . Staff working very hard - Staff very friendly and very helpful Not applicable
- John (10/5): Superb professional host welcoming Faultless - Good pub food drink Excellent rooms Everything you needed
- Andrew (8/5): Excellent location to explore Rutland Water. I will stay here again. - Super friendly and helpful staff!
This pub has only been open for a few weeks, the food was amazing, some of the best roast lamb I have ever had.
The breakfast was huge, I managed to eat it all though!
The pub is exceptionally well located for exploring Rutland Water. There is plenty of parking and lots to do within an easy walking distance.
I can highly recommend a pint of Ay Up, a fabulous light / golden ale. The bedrooms are a bit dated, but super comfortable and everything worked as it should.
- Karen (1/5): Didn’t stay as booking could not be honoured! - Location No rooms available even though we had pre/booked and paid in full. Landlady promised a full refund as they could not honour our booking but never sent back my money. Tried many times to call and email but never received any response. Appalled by their lack of customer service.
- Shelley (8/5): Very good -
- Peter (9/5): Great stay near Rutland Water - Good value and great breakfast
- Brendan (9/5): Clean, cozy and comfy. I’ll definitely stay again when in the area. - My room was very clean, all towels were clean and very soft. The room came with nice coffee and shower products. A little bit noisy at night with a couple motor bikes making a lot of noise late at night but I appreciate that not anything the property can really change.
- Les (10/5): Very friendly - Excellent breakfast. Excellent staff
- Ian (9/5): Superb - All the staff were very friendly and helpful. They have done extremely well with getting the pub ready in such a short time. Breakfast fantastic!!
- Patricia (9/5): A very comfortable stay close to Rutland Water - Comfortable bed.
Quality of towels.
A very good dinner in the restaurant
Attentive staff.
Location close to Rutland water and Bird Fair
- Paul (3/5): Poor -
- Steve (8/5): Overall our stay went well - Staff friendly & helpful. Short walk to dam end of Rutland Water & a short drive to Stamford. Evening meal & breakfast good. New landlady and still settling in, but I'm sure it will get more organised, etc.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Friendly pub with good food and lovely staff. - Excellent friendly pub in a beautiful village with walking access to Rutland Water and a lovely atmosphere. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and when we had to leave early for an event made us bacon ciabattas for breakfast to take with us. Would definitely stay again.
- Steven (9/5): Great - Really good breakfast
- Craig (9/5): Superb -
- Drew (8/5): Very good -
- Ben (9/5): A lovely mini break - A warm welcome, excellent staff and being made to feel a part of everything. Great food, James does an amazing pizza and breakfast, as does Dan. Maisey on the bar was a little treasure. Thanks to Lorna, Charlie and Bill. Hostesses with mostesses. I hope I remembered everyone's names. See you again soon. Only staying for 2 nights.
- Joanne (8/5): Lovely, friendly staff and an excellent breakfast. - We stayed here as we were attending a wedding about 10 minutes away. The Staff & owner were very helpful and friendly and the rooms have recently been painted. The Bathroom was clean & towels were brand new but you only got a small shampoo and conditioner , no shower gel.
The breakfast was excellent. The room was quite basic in furnishings and colour scheme. It was a little overpriced for the standard of room.
- Neil (7/5): Good stay in good pub thats dog friendly. Will stay again. - Dog welcomed. Good pub with excellent food, and good rooms. Very good breakfast. Recently re-opened but staff very helpful. Will stay again. No issues.
- Garry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barbara (9/5): Highly recommend. Great location close to Rutland Water, in a gorgeous village. Staff excellent - Was given such a warm welcome and staff were v helpful and delightful. V clean room; bed and linen v comfortable. Breakfast options incl hot pastries. This property is under new management and being refurbished. Would definitely stay here again. [Note as at 23 June 2024, there was a scam site using property of the same name on booking.com, which owners are trying to get removed]
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional - Staff excellent, room clean, breakfast great, dog friendly and had a nice break with them. Nothing, staff a credit
