Guest Reviews
- Julie (10/5): Comfort, warm , quiet. Like a big hug - A beautiful large comfortable room in a peaceful country setting. The room was lovely warm, very comfortable and exceeded our expections by a long long way. It is a little off the beaten track but that just added to the serenity. Loved it. Nothing
- Ngaio (10/5): Great host, lovely accom. Perfect for last minute accom after a long journey - No breakfast. Location in the country
- Geeves (10/5): -
- Edward (9/5): Perfect in every way - Everything, amazing hosts, fabulous comfy bed and all the extras you could possibly ask for - even fruit from their trees. The access road is gravel and quite lumpy, so your car is always dusty, but worth it for the amazing stay.
- Paulsen (10/5): - Beautiful getaway from city noise. Room has absolutely everything you need with some bonus trinkets stashed away that for that little bit extra something special. A small bottle of milk in the fridge with a little bowl of chocolate treats. The drawer in the bathroom loaded with mini shampoos, body wash, toothpaste, some books, and games to keep you entertained. My husband and I enjoyed a little competitive game of zip it, and the host was absolutely lovely. The weather was the only thing, but obviously, that was uncontrollable. Gives us a good excuse to return so we can witness the night sky in its full glory away from the city lights.

- Friederike (10/5): Wish we could have stayed longer - Quiet rural location with beautiful garden setting views and landscape beyond. Chickens were quietly clucking away in their pen on our arrival and the cottage was super clean and homely. Josie, the host, was lovely and happy to assist with any questions or requests, didn't need the latter as everything was thought of already. nothing
- Jim (9/5): We - Location, excellent, nice and quiet, not far from Matakana and Warkworth .. we enjoyed our welcome to Hen House.. was a great place to use as a base to explore an area of NZ we’ve never been to.. All good, although we found the bed a little hard.. we found cooking difficult as we have never used a microwave, also the electric frypan did not have sensitive controls
- Cconnie (9/5): -

- Sidney (9/5): A great place in the country. You must like chickens. - The Hen House is a terrific little getaway place, especially if you are a fan of chickens! The unit is a good-size stand-alone cabin on the property, out in the country (the wop-wops, for kiwis, boonies for Canadians). The grounds are terrific – flowers, native plants, a chicken coop (naturally), some funky artwork on the back fence, etc. The hospitality was very welcoming. It was slightly challenging to get there, in that the last few miles of road are a bit rough, but it’s well worth the banging about. We’d go back in a minute. Nothing.
- Maarten (8/5): per above - the hens and the rolling hills; the easy laidback country style, never locked the place, very quiet, even the hens! n/a
- Charmaine (10/5): Exceptional - Location was exceptional, views to appreciate

Thank you so much for having us Josie, you were so welcoming and so lovely. - Mrs (8/5): Very good - Very private, peaceful and restful in the countryside. Lovely welcoming hosts.Clean and tidy house. Handy to most places in the Kaipara. Our maps kept taking us the long way to get to the property. A recycle bin would have been handy.

- Jacky (10/5): A lovely retreat after busy days spent elsewhere. - Location we very quiet. With a lovely rural garden. The chickens were not noisy and the room was beautiful. It was perfect
- Rebecca (9/5): Superb - clean and peaceful.... perfect for a relaxing night away.
- Bernadette (8/5): It was good , adaquate ,clean Comfortable nice hosts - Lack of power points and a little cramped in kitchen area not much bench space
- Rod (9/5): Comfortable, clean and private with a friendly, obliging host and lots of ‘chooks’. - The owner/operator is friendly and personable. Nothing was a problem to her and the rural location is both private and peaceful. The unit was clean, well-equipped and comfortable and the price was very reasonable for the standard of accommodation. The only very slightly negatives are that the lack of power points - for example, charging two iPads and 2 cell ‘phones at the same time is problematic and the distance from the main highway, largely on unsealed roads might be an issue for some people.
- Syd (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keran (10/5): A special rural retreat - We loved the rural location and the very scenic drive to it. Bed was comfortable and a well equipped kitchenette, which was perfect for us to make our tea. We appreciated all the extra personal touches...Josie had the accommodation warm for us when we arrived which was such a treat. The chocolates and 3 fruit marmalade were delicious too. Our fabulous friendly hosts went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.
The hens made an appearance, which totally delighted mum. Thanks Josie and Lorraine for sharing your slice of paradise! I would so love to return one day. Everything was perfect !

- John (10/5): Excellent stay, nice and quiet and loved the chickens - Excellent, comfortable and hosts were lovely
- Jemma (10/5): Home away from home - Beautiful and tranquil. Lovely host.
- Christy (10/5): Perfect - A beautiful unit where the hosts have thought of everything. From various cooking equipment and utensils, to practical repellents and lotions, to places to sit inside and outside - even tiles in the grass leading to the house and a wet shoe box! Perfect wi-fi and great TV setup. You can tell there's a lot of love, thought and pride at The Hen House. The bed was 10/10 comfortable, Josie so welcoming, beautiful garden and hens. I could not fault it and hope one day to return. The Hen House would be a great place for a peaceful long weekend away or a week of 'rest and recover' - I wish we had more time here. - Marblewings (9/5): Rural bliss in Kaipara Flats. - Most tranquil, the perfect spot to relax in, away from the city. Lovely panorama of farmland, with only sheep and hens to listen to. Very comfortably furnished little cabin, plenty of hot water, great WiFi. The hosts were superb. The hens are delightful!
We loved it, will be back when we can. Not really a problem, but we had to watch driving on the metal road when arriving, as there were potholes but we're given the heads up by the hosts beforehand.
Upon leaving, the potholes had been fixed, so no issues.

- Mary (8/5): Very good -
- Giulia (8/5): Friendly stopover - Lovely Host, really friendly and welcoming. We had a nice stopover for one night. Many insects but it'ok being in a farm.
- Amie (10/5): Wonderful and inviting, great stay - Location was a fair way out but that's what we wanted. Lovely hosts and so helpful, was lovely and warm in August.
- Adam (9/5): Superb - Great spot, everything you need and great guests
- Brad (10/5): Outstanding place to relax! - This stay was just beautiful! It made our trip! The hosts were very lovely and attentive.
The place is outstanding for what you pay. The view is phenomenal and it is so serene and quiet. The place is very clean and all the little extra thoughtful touches make it special. From the locally sourced milk to the chocolates and natural bathroom products it was very thoughtful. It was also very eco conscious is great! We loved that it was attached to the hens house literally as we love animals! It was close enough to the airport by car also.
- Pavel (10/5): This is a fresh and exceptionally tidy studio, tastefully decorated, on tranquil grounds. Loved it! - Nice studio with everything you need for a short stay, either for work or romantic holiday ;) fresh and tidy, quiet. Internet access via wifi, was fast enough for my video conference calls, when I tested it with speed test dot net it was 30 Mbps down and 14 Mbps up.
Friendly hosts made me welcome, we had a good chat about hens, recovering bush and many other things ;)
Love the place, want to visit again!
