Host pleasant and welcoming. Generous continental style breakfast left in kitchen for your use when you're ready to leave your comfy bed! Lovely home-made jam! Off main road location with safe parking. Recommend a visit to nearby Denby Pottery with their excellent Visitor Centre. No pub or eateries within walking distance, so you'll need to use the car or bring back a take-away. Host is OK with that.

I especially enjoyed the pillow mist for a perfect night’s sleep. The towels and water felt surprisingly soft, adding a luxurious touch. The host was warm and accommodating, making the experience even better. Great value for money – highly recommended!
- Claire (10/5): Welcoming host and cosy cottage stay - The cottage was so lovely and homely.
I was not in there long as only booked due to being at a wedding nearby but you had your own living room, and the bedroom I stopped it was at the end of the hallway with your own bathroom opposite which was huge so had your own space in the cottage, felt very comfortable and at home.
The host was also very welcoming. Lovely place would stay again if ever needing to stop in this area. Nothing it had everything you needed
- Jade (10/5): Beautiful place where you are made to feel special - I stayed for 3 nights for my birthday, the host Wendy really went out of her way to make me feel special. I had the most relaxing break there. I'm autistic and struggle when going to new places, but I felt completely comfortable there, and all my needs were all met with excellence. There were lots to do near by and I went on nature walks and to restaurants and cafes with ease. Wendy was a wonderful help with recommendations. Nothing
- Simone (10/5): A really lovely, relaxed and comfortable place for my first night visiting the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District: perfe - The host was very welcoming and friendly, the property beautiful, clean and comfortable, with a combination of traditional and modern styling. My bedroom was crisp and clean, the bed very comfortable, the bedside lighting perfect for either subdued atmosphere or reading in bed. It was a delight to be able to use a small sitting room, with TV. The shared bathroom very stylish, high quality. The choices available for the non-cooked, self service breakfast were great, a delight whilst looking at the garden. Nothing to dislike.
- Jonathan (10/5): Great stay - Very nice warm and cozy cottage.. beautifully done inside. You feel very at home very nice bathroom everything you need. Nice continental breakfast. Very clean , comfortable bed. Way nicer than a hotel and more economical. friendly host. Nothing
- Fiona (10/5): Lovely cottage with everything you need, just a shame I wasn’t there longer! - Wendy is a great host and this is a fab place to stay. I was there for work so arrived late and went early so I wasn’t able to enjoy the area or breakfast but my stay was made as comfortable as possible. I wasn’t really there long enough to not like anything!
- Nicholas (4/5): A bad choice of place to stay. Not value for money. The host made you feel a nuisance. Fire risk. - Not much. A bad choice of place to stay. Not value for money.
The host does not like you spending time in the property during the day.
My bed was uncomfortable and I could not hand wash as the hand basin did not work properly.
The cat would occasionally be sick and defecate on the kitchen floor.
For me the staircase was very dangerous. I wonder if a fire happened at night that I could manage to escape alive. Does Highway Cottage meet the requirements of The Fire Safety Regulations 2023 which includes this type of holiday let. The regulations were brought in as a consequence of The Grenfell Tower Fire of 2017?
There is an very deep step at the end of the first floor landing above the staircase. At night in the dark you could forget it is there or be half asleep and fall forward and potentially fall down the staircase. There is no handrail on the righthand side when ascending the staircase and each step on the stair is not very long.
For better value a stay at PremierInn above Derby Bus Station is £40 a night in April 2025.
You get a large room, comfortable king size bed, large wall mounted television, kettle for tea and coffee making and bathroom with large shower. You can purchase for £10 an unlimited full English breakfast.. My room at H.C. had just a bed with television and kettle downstairs. I was not allowed to enter the property through the main front door but a side door.
There were two visitors during my stay Host's boyfriend stayed first two days and a woman to cut the hair of the host. The first two mornings of my stay I was in the kitchen and as I sat at the dining table there was the loud sound of what I thought was the sound of a mattress getting a thrashing.. happened both mornings. Like something from ;Carry On Abroad'. As Kenneth Williams would say 'stop messing about''. I do not molest women. I was brought up by parents to respect women. I did not get a full refund for the time I paid for but did not stay - £21.14 underpayment.
- Vanessa (10/5): Exceptional - I travel to Derbyshire quite a lot and normally use hotels but noticed this B&B with it's excellent reviews so thought I would stay here on my recent trip. I'm so glad I did! Compared to the impersonal hotels this B&B was like a breath of fresh air. Lovely warm welcome. Excellent little lounge and my room was lovely. Comfy bed and pillows. The bathroom was gorgeous with an excellent shower. All areas beautifully clean. Very relaxed and quiet. Perfect for me and I would very much hope to be able to stay again on one of my future trips. Nothing.
- Casper (9/5): Lovely stay, lovely location, lovely host - The Highway Cottage was incredibly well taken care of with a lot of character, that reflects the host, Wendy. The facilities that come with the stay were also perfect. The included breakfast was more than great, with a bunch of choices to get your day going.
Wendy is incredibly friendly, helpful, and well informed about the surrounding area. Even without a car, the location is quite well connected through numerous busses and nearby trains.
The stay is inside someone's home, but it couldn't be a warmer welcome. There really wasn't anything to fault.
- Alan (10/5): A brilliant stay ..a home from home. - I had a lovely stay and Wendy was great..she made me feel very much at home..a lovely room and facilities.
Breakfast was also very good.
- Alan (10/5): A very relaxing stay, in a really attractive cottage. - An excellent choice available, in an attractive location. Nothing
- Bell (9/5): Quite relaxing stay with all mod cons - Quirky cottage great host Only road side parking but very quiet road
- Stewart (10/5): A delightful home from home, somewhere to look forward to returning to - This was my 3rd stay at Highway Cottage and I will keep coming back! Wendy is such a wonderful host - I am always welcomed with the offer of a cup of tea. It is a real home from home and much nicer than staying in an impersonal hotel.
The location suits me as it is convenient for my visits to Derby. I get my own sitting room and internet TV and good WiFi connectivity. Wendy makes sure that I have a variety of options for breakfast (and lovely home made jam on this visit). To be clear, what you are getting is a room in someone's home but the welcome couldn't be warmer. I can't fault it!
- Stephanie (7/5): Comfy bed very friendly host nice room - Breakfast was ok not the best but ok yes Tea and coffee in room maybe a tv too

- Esther (10/5): Overnight stay - The Cottage was beautiful and spotlessly clean. The host was very helpful and welcoming. The room had everything needed for a stay, including a comfortable double bed and the breakfast in the morning was lovely. Nothing!
- Jo (10/5): Exceptional - The host was incredibly welcoming and hospitable. The house is beautiful and the room was very comfortable.
- Karen (10/5): I would highly recommend Highway Cottage, it was easy to find with Wendy's instructions too. - Wendy was a lovely host and made me feel really welcome, especially as I was attending a friends funeral the following morning. I got diverted as the M6 was closed and so was an hour late and Wendy was really understanding. when I arrived at n10pm she even asked me if I wanted a cup of tea, which was very kind of her. The bathroom was fabulous and the continental breakfast was lovely. Sitting at the dinning table looking out of the court yard was a lovely and relaxing way to start the day.
- Rachel (10/5): Warm, welcoming and very relaxing. - I had such a lovely peaceful stay. Wendy is a fantastic host.
- Tina (10/5): This b&b is a gem to find! - The Interior of home is beautifully designed, especially the bathroom which is like something you’d see in ‘Country homes and Interiors’ Magazine! Cottage was very comfortable and charming. Wendy, the host was welcoming, friendly and relaxed. I had the perfect stay during a very difficult visit. Thank you so much. There is absolutely nothing to dislike.

- Winnie (10/5): Exceptional - A warm welcome and a beautiful home to stay. Good facilities. I think would be hard to beat.
- Colinm (9/5): Very nice 😊 - Location was ideal for visiting family in Belper. B&B was ‘home from home’ and host Wendy provided all necessary information, continental breakfast provided a range including fresh fruit/ bread/cereals etc. Great stay and great value for the money 😁.

- Brian (10/5): I would definitely go back and would recommend a visit. - Wendy is a great host. Felt like I had known her for years. It is a lovely house. The bathroom looks like you see in magazines and showrooms. The bedroom was pin clean with crisp white sheets and comfy. The breakfast was fantastic. Lavazza coffee fresh off the stove, muesli, greek yoghurt, toasted artisan bread and home made blackberry jam that was delicious and fragrant. I got up early and was able to get a relaxed breakfast and plenty of work prep done at the kitchen table. Wendy just checked I was ok and comfortable at the right points. Highly recommend. Wish I had arrived in the daylight, Belper deserves a closer look. Sorry I didn't have time to stay for a couple of days and explore the area.
