Guest Reviews

- Vince (8/5): Worth staying just for the coffee - Breakfast was great, but not as big as some of the Ryokans we stayed at. The help-yourself espresso machine and pourover coffee station makes up for it! Best coffee I had in Japan. Could use a dedicated drying room for wet ski gear
- Murray (9/5): - Spacious rooms and common area
- Sebastian (10/5): -
- Launce (10/5): - Great place, owner Craig is awesome and helpful, staff is lovely, especially Isabella. Breakfast is wonderful and coffee is always available and top quality.
- siska (10/5): Beautiful place with beautiful staff. The coffee is soo good!! - The lodge feels very homie with a traditional touch Nothing
- Julie (9/5): - The lodge is lovely. The coffee and breakfasts are amazing! To get to eateries you have to hike or drive. There is a cute Italian restaurant just up the road run by sweet older ladies. It closes early though.
- Lucy (9/5): - We really loved the shared, comfortable living space: as a family, we loved playing the board games provided. The staff went out of their way to make this a wonderful stay for us and to make us feel welcome and supported in our travels in the area.
- Yunosuke (9/5): 水上 is goat!!!
- Daniel (7/5): Clean, comfortable beds, good coffee - Very clean. Good coffee. Room was not good for someone 186cm tall, banged my head on the beams several times.
- Jorrit (10/5): - Had a very good stay! Many things to do around. The lodge itself is very comfortable, good staff and tasty coffee!
- Kyle (10/5): -
- Vivienne (10/5): We highly recommend this property. Japanese/Italian restaurant next door is very good too. - Lovely staff, comfortable beds, very good showers, beautifully presented breakfast, kind host/owner generously driving guests to where they want to go. Internet was a bit unreliable.
- Corie (10/5): - I absolutely loved my stay here at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery, Craig was a wonderful host and even picked me up from the local station - which was super kind. The tatami mats were really comfortable as well- would highly recommend Nothing

- Andrea (10/5): Captivating - the snow on our 2nd day was very good and very fun to play with and also the hotel was clean and not dusty and very quiet also the toys there was very fun to play with especially the soccer one? It’s my favorite and I like your breakfast muffin 😊 and also Staff is friendly and kind ,,, coffee is so delicious 😋 Need to refill body soap container and also need to have free toothbrush each bathroom
- Jacqueline (10/5): -
- Catherine (8/5): Great for a family ski trip - The property is well and thoughtfully maintained, very clean, with all kinds of little perks and amenities, and with friendly and responsive staff & owner(s) who go above and beyond to make sure you're having a great stay. The common area is especially nice, better than many I've seen. The coffee and hot chocolate are delicious, the vegetarian breakfast lovely. I am not sure about the other rooms, or what it's like in less crowded conditions, but the room to the right at the top of the stairs seems to receive noise from all over the property (including from the stairs themselves, the sink & toilet area in the hall, downstairs conversations, front parking lot, and adjacent rooms.) The sliding door to the room itself is heavy, stiff, and loud, which can make things complicated in terms of both noise and privacy.
- Bhagwati (10/5): Excellent service, delicious breakfast, and helpful staff. - Outstanding hospitality, delicious breakfast, and very cooperative staff. Highly recommended. All good
- Gerhard (10/5): Awesome stay - Beautiful lodge in a beautiful area in Japan. The owner was so accommodating and made our stay extra special. He gave great recommendations for restaurants, day trips as well as the coolest onsen.
This place is a gem out of the touristy areas and we will definitely return.
Good breakfast and great coffee that can be enjoyed in a very spacious common area downstairs. Facilities are great and very clean. Nothing

- Poe (10/5): - The property was very quiet, clean, and relaxing. Also, the surrounding community was quaint and worth exploring. The staff (including the owner) were very friendly and accommodating. There was nothing to not like. Everything was just as it was described.
- YA TING (10/5): - Host’s reception is very warm and the breakfast & coffee are awesome!
- Hanim.S (10/5): Surrounded by mountains - It's location. You're surrounded by the mountains.
Set this as our base to went up the tanigawadake ropeway. The owner even set us up with a nearby onsen for a private onsen trip. It was very refreshing walking from the onsen back to the accommodation.
We even got to cycle around the area using their electric bicycle. Wish I had more time to cycle around. Maybe for the next visit. Unless you're driving, then you'll be depending with the availability of the owner to send/pick you up at the train/bus station. But Craig have been so helpful driving us around during our stay and we managed to get to places.

- Timothy (10/5): A great place in a magical valley full of beauty. - Great breakfast every morning of pastries and full coffee service. Such a special place! No complaints!
- Alexandre (10/5): Perfect spot, Perfect host, Perfect location - This place is located in the Tanigawa hills in the town of Minakami. Craig and his wife run this large house with several different styles of rooms. We had a Japanese-style room with tatami mats and futons, overlooking the mountains. Craig is passionate about coffee and runs a roastery. He is very attentive and can drive you around the area and take you to and from the station if necessary. The breakfast was excellent every morning. The place is close to hiking trails. Everything was clean, including the toilets, the onsen-style showers and the rooms.
I can only recommend this place, which is an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Many thanks again to Craig and his team of volunteers.
- Dusan (10/5): - Nice quiet place. Very heplful and communicative owner.
- Stephan (9/5): -
- ren79 (10/5): - Everything! Beautiful surroundings, staff, clean Nothing..
- Sari (9/5): -
- Iryna (10/5): -
- Natasha (10/5): Great place to enjoy the beautiful Minakami scenery and a lovely cup of coffee :D - The coffee and breakfast are delicious and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The owners are very friendly and helpful and made our stay excellent! They were able to drop us off at the train station on our way out of town which was a real life saver. This isn’t really a fault on the hotel, but the food options are limited at the top of the road where it’s located. If you have a car you will be fine, otherwise just make sure to plan your lunches or dinners carefully.
- Rona (8/5): -

- Keiko (10/5): Relax - The location is great
The owner and staff are very kind
There was pleasant music playing in the living room. I was able to relax Nothing in particular
- Yann (10/5): - Craig, the owner, and his staff were fantastic. Always happy to help and he even offered me a ride to and from the station. They have e-bikes you can use and they provide precious informations about the area. The lodge is a little bit far from the station. If you have a car, it's good but if you're traveling by train and bus, the acces is a little bit difficult. But the owner kindly offered me the ride to and from the station.
- Marc (9/5): We enjoyed our time here and would happily return. A lovely spot for a relaxing getaway! - We had a very pleasant stay at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery. Our hosts were welcoming hosts, ensuring we felt comfortable throughout our visit. The lodge is well-kept, with a charming and cosy atmosphere that suits the area perfectly. We enjoyed our time here and would happily return. A lovely spot for a relaxing getaway, and we’d recommend it to others. Nothing ;)

- Donna (8/5): Definitely will return. - A/C unit in the bedroom worked like a charm on a super hot eve. Delicious Coffee. Great Suggestions from Craig for outdoor outings. Temp too hot in common space. Could have used some fans in the shower room.
- Yulong (10/5): Our stay at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery left us with wonderful memories. - A perfect few days! The hotel is in a great location, though transportation is generally difficult, making taxis difficult to find. However, various operators offer shuttle services upon reservation. The rooms are clean and tidy, coffee and other beverages are available in the lobby, and the breakfast is delicious and nutritious. We booked a two-day trip with ZIGGIES ADVENTURE JP and had a wonderful time. The tour guide was also very professional. The hotel owner, a handsome Australian gentleman, was very warm and friendly, providing meticulous service and accommodating every request. He explained the surrounding area, provided safety precautions, and provided toys for the children. The hot spring he recommended was also excellent, a 10-minute walk away, with stunning views along the way. Our stay at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery left us with wonderful memories.

- Beverly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Minh (10/5): Like staying at a friend’s place, but with better coffee. - We had such a wonderful time at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery. Staying here felt more like visiting a friend than checking into a lodge. Craig and his family are genuinely lovely… warm, generous, and full of helpful local insights.
From day one, Craig helped us plan everything: hiking routes, the best nearby restaurants, even the local swimming spot his family visits daily. He even pointed out interesting local wildlife, which added a special touch to our nature walks.
The rooms were super comfortable, breakfast was a delight, and the coffee… well, it lives up to the “roastery” in the name. Truly some of the best we’ve had in Japan.
We’re already talking about coming back in winter to experience the area’s skiing. Highly recommended.
- Manesh (9/5): A beautiful lodge in Minakami town with a wonderful host Craig - Tucked away from the clamor of the city, this quaint resort feels like a hidden retreat where time slows down. Surrounded by nature’s gentle hush, it offers a serene escape marked by quiet pathways, cozy cottages, and soft whispers of the breeze. Far from the rush and routine, every corner invites calm—perfect for morning walks, unhurried conversations, or simply soaking in the stillness. It’s a peaceful haven where simplicity and solitude come together, allowing you to breathe deeply and just be.
Our wonderful host, Craig, went out of his way to ensure we had a truly memorable experience—his warmth and attention to detail made our stay all the more special. Nothing that I can think of
- Ruri (7/5): Good - The coffee and the outdoor sitting space.
- Aidan (10/5): A very comfortable stay in a beautiful place with a great host. - Great location in a beautiful valley, really near lots of hiking trails, a river, very peaceful. The lodge itself is spacious, clean and comfortable. Craig is an excellent host, with lots of knowledge and enthusiasm for the area. He makes you feel very welcome and comfortable. The breakfast is delicious and the coffee obviously superb. Would highly, highly recommend. N/a
- Lennart (10/5): Dreamy, adventurous, calm - Japanese style rooms were super pretty, free to use e bikes and free pickup from the train station. The host helped to get around here and booked things that we can do, we came without any plans and ended up having a great time
- Preslav (9/5): Superb -
- Mork (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery was lovely. We arrived a bit late, but the staff were still there to welcome us and check us in. We decided to try the Italian restaurant ‘Small Restaurant Sae’ just up the street, and it did not disappoint. The property is also within a 6-minute drive to a FamilyMart. The room was comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless. Breakfast and coffee in the morning were delicious. We ran into the property owner, Craig, as we were leaving, and he was very kind and gave us recommendations for things to do in the area. We would definitely stay at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery on our next trip to Tanigawa!
- Lukas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (10/5): My mother, nephew you and I came for a couple days on our trip to Japan to escape the business of Tokyo and enjoy nature - As the reviews have pointed out, Craig is helpful, kind and courteous. He helped plan many of the outings that we did while staying at his hostel. The location! Peaceful, nature, lots of walking trails outside the doorstep of the Lodge.
Delicious coffee.
- Othman (10/5): Exceptional - Craig was a great host, accommodating to his guests, with great sense of hospitality. The location was perfect in the middle of valley, pretty calm and surrounded by greenery. Breakfast was healthy and energetic. Bonus point (on top of great coffee for coffee lovers 😊), the Lodge offers activities such as rafting, canyoning, etc. through local partners with negotiated rates. Great experience overall, hoping to come back again
- Ramesh (9/5): High value, wonderful hosts, and a stone's throw from Tokyo! - Craig san & Rika san are wonderful, caring hosts! They were so warm and always helpful. Craig san used to personally help with pick ups/ drop offs to the nearest train station (JR Minakami station) and he'd even go the extra mile to help me get to restaurants in the area for dinner (he had even collected me at 9:00 PM once!) Always willing to share wisdom of living in the area, Craig san would compare and contrast the experiences of living in a megacity like Tokyo vs. living in the quiet wilderness of the Minakami area. The house has been personally renovated by them and I love that it's full of small details -- LOTS of excellent coffee available round the clock if you like! (Usually, hotels serve regular coffee which is cut off after 6:00 PM). The breakfast sets were excellent and containing several smaller items -- a quiche, sometimes a crumble, often granola with yoghurt, and fruits. Plus, more excellent coffee -- I loved their Mocha! The outdoor patio is a welcoming place to sit and work and the WiFi is available there too. The hosts are well integrated into the local community, so everybody knows them, and its a charming place to be irrespective of the season. The property is especially stunning in Autumn/ Fall and Spring.
- Amy (9/5): Gorgeous spot, wonderful and homey inn, we were well looked-after! - Breakfast was delicious and pleased everyone in the family. Especially amazing granola. The location was fabulous and lovely surroundings. We will be back in May and excited to see the area once the snow has fully melted. The on-site hosts were very available and kind and when the owner popped in, he was extra welcoming and lovely. I'm sure there are guests that return simply because of his warm hospitality! The big lounge area was simply perfect for us as we were traveling with another family and could gather to play games, drink coffee and even play the piano. So fun! We will be back! I know it's a coffee roastery : ) and my husband loved the beautiful coffee...would you consider adding a good chai latte to the menu? The brewed tea was plenty good enough...but chai option would make it special! The second night we asked for additional bedding and the hosts were quick to provide. I don't want to critique anything as it was otherwise SUCH a lovely stay, and we will definitely return!
- Alexander (10/5): Exceptional -
- Su-parker (10/5): Great stay if you love coffee, clean and very helpful staff. - Beautiful location in the mountains, clean air and a short walk from stunning views. The lodge was clean and the staff were very helpful. Coffee was exceptional, definitely the best we had in the country. I had an accident that ended me in the hospital and the owner picked me and my friends up, as we didn’t have a car. Can’t thank him enough. If you don’t have a car this location is pretty remote and you’ll have quite a lot of walking to do. I personally enjoyed it, but it might not be for some.
- Katherine (10/5): We couldn’t have imagined a better place to stay for adventuring and relaxing in the area! - Everything was great. Craig and all the staff were wonderful and made us feel like home. They had great tips for things to do in the area, gave us rides from/to town, and also helped make reservations. The e-bikes made getting around super smooth. Breakfast and coffee every morning were top notch. And finally the lodge itself was spotless and in a super beautiful and peaceful area, with hikes starting pretty much right outside the door Since the walls were fairly thin, when others were loud it was a little disruptive, but nothing that ear plugs can’t handle
- Dobbin (9/5): Simple and cozy lodge with great coffee - It’s always a joy discovering a new cozy place to nest for the night. Tanigawa Roastery and Lodge is an excellent, simple but thoughtfully renovated place not too far from Minakami Station. The unlimited locally roasted coffee was incredible, and the vegetarian breakfast served with love by Emma and Robbie (a sweet young Scottish couple here on working holiday) made both of the mornings I woke up here a true pleasure. A big thanks to Craig (the owner and roaster) for picking me up late at Minakami Station! I will be back here again for more adventures!
- Mei (8/5): Very good - Cosy, comfortable, good breakfast and good coffee😊

- Vinay (9/5): Superb - We had a fantastic stay at Tanigawa Valley Lodge & Coffee Roastery. From the moment we arrived, Craige and his staff made us feel incredibly welcome with their warm hospitality and attentiveness. The place was clean, well-kept, and in a great location. Everything was tidy and organized, making it easy to relax.
Overall, our experience was very positive. The combination of friendly service, a well-kept environment, and a welcoming atmosphere made our stay truly enjoyable. We would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and well-managed place to stay!
- Elizabeth (10/5): A wonderful peaceful and beautiful experience - The host Craig was exceptional, his ability to look after us and all guests was a joy. Nothing is to hard and his local knowledge is unbelievable. It is so peaceful and beautiful particularly when it has snowed. Very local and getting to meet some of the other guests was great. I have owned a guest house previously and had over 40 years in the hospitality and tourism industry and Craig is just a shining example of what a great host should be! Well done to you and your team, and it was wonderful speaking with you. If you don’t have a car you’re limited for lunch and dinner choices. Also local Onsen etc. Craig ran us around and made sure we could enjoy these and we didn’t miss out. Just better choices and available if you have a car.
