Guest Reviews
- Tony (7/5): Okay, but would look for somewhere else if we stay in the area again. - It was okay, though the meals were expensive. Room okay, but a bit on the small side, though the bathroom was large. WiFi worked. Breakfast was not included and was very expensive at £19.50. Think this might be the highest price we have ever seen. Car park seems small for number of people staying. We got the last space.

- Erica (10/5): Super and we would recommend The Saxon Inn to anyone staying in Dorset. - Sarah is an exceptional host. She went above and beyond to make our stay memorable for all the right reasons: comfortable beds, attention to detail with toiletries, breakfast was delicious and made for a relaxing stay and introduction to Dorset Nothing at all.
- Emma (10/5): -
- Blanca (10/5): -
- Charles (10/5): - Charming building with friendly staff and comfortable rooms. Minor noise in the morning as it is a small building.
- David (9/5): Perfect spot for one night whilst touring Dorset - Clean comfortable and friendly staff Nothing

Ci tornerei molto volentieri

- Chambers (9/5): It is a must-stay if you are in the area. - Our host Sarah was the star of the show. She made us feel welcome from the very moment we arrived. The team at the Saxon were also all very friendly and helpful. The food and drink was excellent. Our every need was catered for. The ambiance at the Saxon was very nice and all the locals blended in with the guests to make a very enjoyable stay. Nothing.
- Corinne (10/5): Fabulous find - Lovely place to stay, warm welcome, very clean and comfortable.
Food was amazing, fresh and delicious.
Would definitely stay again
- Daniel (10/5): An incredible gem in the heart of Dorset. An amazing, quiet getaway with all the details right - Thank you Sarah so so much for your hospitality, you made us feel right at home and as if we were in someone's home rather than at a B&B!
Everything was in its right place and everything looked purposefully placed with taste and precision. Talking about taste, those scrambled eggs truly were delicious.
We have already recommended you to several people potentially travelling to the area.
It was a delight! We will be back again in future. Can't think of anything. Maybe could we stay for weeks?
- Graham (10/5): Excellent – would definitely stay again - We stayed with our two small dogs and all of us were made to feel wonderfully welcome by Sarah and her team.
The food is superb, both breakfast and dinner are excellent, imaginative, well prepared and all freshly cooked.
The rooms although not the largest are well appointed, with a dog 'welcome' box and lovely biscuits to go with the complementary teas and coffees.
- Darren (8/5): Lovely host and location - Lovely host and dog.
Excellent location.
Lovely room.
Coffee and tea biscuits. Nice. UHT milk - would prefer fresh
- Cindy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tamara (10/5): Excellent accommodation for those seeking an upscale country pub break! - Boutique bedrooms and high quality bedding and bathroom products. Great welcome tray and breakfasts! My room could have had a day blind as felt a bit on show if I had the blind up and was getting g dressed (room overlooks the carpark and pub garden).
- Caroline (9/5): Would highly recommend and would not hesitate to book again! - Great country pub!
Peaceful location!
Comfy beds!
Excellent, freshly cooked food!
Friendly staff! I couldn't get the bedside lamp to work, so no bedtime reading for me!
- Declan (9/5): Would defo risky recommend for a stay, or a night and meal at the pub - Beautiful country Dorset pub with an excellent manager, and the food was amazing Rooms were hot but it was 32c!!
- Keith (10/5): Very good as always - We’ve stayed there many times over the last 10 years, so know it well Nothing at all

Nice outside area to sit
Good location Too short a stay!
- Graham (10/5): Oustanding hospitality and food - Food and hospitality were of Outstanding Quality We had difficulty making contact on the days the Inn was closed. That was partly our fault as my phone was not set up to accept the message format, otherwise there was nothing not to like
- Leena (10/5): Really lovely place, comfortable and enjoyable. - Friendly staff and very comfortable stay. The rooms were beautifully presented and met all our needs.
- Marsh (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (8/5): Very good -
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jon (9/5): Great stay. 😁 - Friendly and welcoming staff, bedroom very clean and well decorated with quality furnishings and bedding. The pub is situated in a nice quiet location. The downstairs of the pub looked welcoming although we didn't frequent the bar area. Parking was good. A charming little village pub with rooms. We found the bedroom was quite warm, too warm to comfortably sleep, and not on the hottest of days. The room did cool as the night wore on but the addition of a fan would be most welcome if possible?
Although you can pay for breakfast directly, it would be nice if there was a package offered when booking the room. Both points are not criticisms but suggestions, and should not detract from staying at this very homely property.
- Richard (9/5): Beautiful place, warm reception, friendly and efficient staff., would recommend - The atmosphere, the (friendly and efficient) staff, the location and the food (the battered fish was among the best we’ve ever had). Good breakfast too.
The on site proprietor (Sarah) is very much on top of things. The waiting staff (Isabel and ?) were superb. Minor points:
The beds (by bad luck we were in a room with single beds, and they were a little bit narrow with slightly rough bedding).
WiFi was intermittent.
- Colin (10/5): brilliant - brilliantly cooked breakfast using quality local produce ( apple juice from next village) brilliant parking and great host. lovely off road walks, imaculate cosy room.
- Katherine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (10/5): Perfection - Atmosphere & charming staff

- Susan (10/5): Relaxing happy pub where we will love to go and stay again - Very friendly homely staff. Gorgeous oldie world pub. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was extraordinarily good. Our family who joined us for Sunday lunch , who are small holders, were amazed at the quality and taste so that says a lot. Surrounding area was beautiful. Terrifically well organised. Exceptionally clean. Made to feel we were very special. Atmosphere very gentle and welcoming. All the staff were happy and very genuine. Which makes the whole experience very very very, very enjoyable. Nothing
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional - A lovely place with very friendly and helpful staff.
- Jenny (10/5): Hidden Gem, fabulous staff - Lovely Pub in a village location, Sarah was a fabulous host, all of the staff were friendly and welcoming, great atmosphere and lovely food. The room was lovely and spacious, bed very comfortable and all of the little touches in the room made it feel luxurious nothing
- Reeves (10/5): Exceptional - Relaxed, friendly atmosphere and exceptional food! The room & bed were quite small, but it was very comfortable. (Quality linen etc.)
- Suzanne (10/5): Would love to spend more time there. - Staff make you feel at home. A wonderful experience. The food was great.

Fabulous food and lovely pub surroundings. The room was spotless, the bed comfy, and a selection of tea and coffee with complimentary biscuits. Would highly recommend and will definitely stay again. Thankyou.
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely warm welcome, very comfortable bed and furnishing, spotlessly clean. Good food and excellent breakfast
- Sharon (10/5): We enjoyed or brief stay at the Saxon - beautiful room and welcoming staff. - The staff were very welcoming and we were made to feel at home. I loved the room - very clean and beautifully decorated with some personal touches that made it stand out from the usual accommodation in that range. We stated for dinner in the restaurant which was also very nice.
- Felicity (9/5): It was clean and tidy and staff were very pleasing. I will probably stay there again. - Did not have breakfast
- Mike (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (10/5): An hospitable Inn in the heart of rural Dorset. - Food excellent, delicious breakfast and really well prepared evening meals. Great walking area with Hambledon Hill on the doorstep. Dog made to feel very welcome.
- Josephine (9/5): Great location. Good sized room. Lovely bed and big clean shower room - Very comfortable with all essentials provided. Lovely comfortable bed Closed for dinner for residents Sunday evening
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sarah (10/5): Wow just wow - Everything was carefully thought through from the decor, ambiance to your comfort. Nothing
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - We had a lovely warm welcome when we arrived . We were shown to our very comfortable and stylish accommodation and completed the day with a delicious and tasty evening meal! Overall a wonderful little Inn in the heart of Dorset!
- Tony (10/5): Fantastic place for a short break - From the moment we walked into the pub we felt at home. Everyone that worked there were so friendly and nothing was to much trouble. The food was out of this world the room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. The village was very pretty. Overall a great couple of days and will be returning in the future. Nothing
- Rachel (10/5): Perfect little country stay in Dorset. Will be returning! - Amazing little find… immaculate and cosy lounge bar and restaurant and really cute room that was well decorated and comfortable. Staff were really friendly and accommodating. Nothing
- David (10/5): Perfect. Many thanks. - Although breakfast was not scheduled until 9am on a Sunday I had to leave early and I was kindly offered a lovely breakfast at 8.30 which really helped. Nothing!
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (7/5): Good -
- Mary (4/5): Disappointing - The two members of staff who were delightfully welcoming. The waitress who kindly checked to see if there was an available table before being rudely interupted . The room was warm, cozy and well appointed .The bathroom was clean. The fact that we were not told at check in, that the restaurant was likely to be busy or infact fully booked!!
The simply rude response given by the owner at 6.30pm "It's my business and people come here to eat, we are full to capacity!!! " No further conversation was had.I'm not sure we could have been made to feel less welcome in her accommodation ,which we had chosen to stay.
We did not leave the busy car park as there would not have been a space to return to. We retreated to the room with a pork pie and some crisps from the car.
Sadly the walls of this old pub are a little thin -not unexpected but the less than considerate people in the room next door could be heard till the early hours moving and chatting.
I can not comment on the breakfast ,we chose not to stay.
Sadly disappointed.
- Martyn (9/5): Friendly and quality service - Small enough for the proprietor to care about a friendly and high quality service in a lovely rural setting. Good food, decent size room and huge comfy bed. A relaxing and enjoyable stay
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful host. Beautiful building and very stylish rooms. Everything you could want and ask for. Breakfast was amazing. Fresh fruit with muesli and the cooked breakfast, the mushrooms were to die for!! Excellent stay. Hermon was also a joy, the little dachshund. N/A
- Selina (10/5): A really warm welcome and an attentive host. The food was delicious too - A cosy bedroom
- Paul (7/5): Good -
- Lisa (10/5): Finding an excuse to go back - Gorgeous refurbished hotel / pub
Loved the decor
Super comfortable beds
Really lovely vibe
Food was exceptional and the staff were also incredibly welcoming and super helpful
- J (9/5): Perfect stop off en route to Cornwall - loved it - Lovely pub with great staff and excellent food
- Dave (7/5): Good -
- Paul (9/5): Great, staff, great location, lovely decor and out of this world food. - The Saxon Inn had a lovely feel about it, very warm and welcoming.
Our evening meal was 1st class and breakfast was just fantastic, quality and plenty of choice. We loved everything.
- Angie (10/5): An absolute gem of a place in rural Dorset - My husband and I stayed at The Saxon Inn this weekend and couldn't recommend it more highly. Sarah is a delightful host/proprietor and her attention to detail is outstanding. We stayed in 'Hambledon' which we chose because of the super-king size bed - it was fantastically comfortable (so much so that I meant to ask for the brand of the mattress!). The decor is lovely and everything is of the highest quality. I had a delicious evening meal in the pub's popular restaurant - booking is essential - and the breakfast was absolutely delicious; so many options and all beautifully presented.
- Carole (9/5): Very comfortable relaxing stay! - Beautiful location. Great attention to detail. Dog bowls and poo bins and bags in garden!
Comfortable and relaxed seating arrangements. Sheepskins on chairs etc.
Very comfortable bed and pillows! Tasteful linen.
Very friendly with good service. Toilet didn’t flush properly. Bedside reading lamps would be an improvement.
- Alex (7/5): Good - Staff and food in bar were excellent.
It's also a lovely old pub very nicely updated But! We had the admittedly small double room which in all honesty was a single. Also unfortunately, there were very unthoughtful people in the next room with the TV on loud at nearly 1.30 am. That combined with very poor sound insulation meant a really bad night....But there you go
- Karen (9/5): Amazing stay - Super friendly and helpful staff. Beautifully decorated bar with furs on seats. Food for dinner and breakfast was delicious! Beds were really comfortable and rooms were really stylishly decorated. Our dog was made very welcome. Would highly recommend staying here amazing! Only thing I could mention if I had to is the shower in our room looked a very old electric shower and gave a tiny weak flow in the middle. Didn't seem in keeping with the rest of the beautiful quality surroundings.
- Harry (9/5): A cozy and welcoming stay in the beautiful English countryside. - A lovely place to stay. The interior design was really impressive, the room was very clean, had a large bed and had a very homely feel. The staff were super friendly and helpful! The breakfast was also exquisite - would definitely recommend staying here! The breakfast was a little more expensive than we were expecting to pay at £19.50 each.
- Christopher (8/5): Enjoyable stay and will use again when visiting family in that area but will book larger room. - Good location for our visit. Very friendly staff and exceptionally clean rooms. We didn’t eat there to experience the food as we’re visiting family but restaurant was fully booked so would imagine it was good. The room we booked was small with a small bed but was fine as only for one night.
- Justine (9/5): Superb - Lovely clean room, with added treats. Very good bathroom and shower. We had an evening meal in the restaurant and it was delicious! The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Lovely big bed and rustic room decor. We could have done with a fan as it was a very hot night and there wasn't one in the room but to be fair to them, we didn't ask. The bed cover was very cosy but probably a bit heavy for summer. Ideal for cooler winter months though.
- Lynne (9/5): Lovely stay just the price of breakfast put us off so we only had it one morning - Excellent choice of food very pricey at £20 per person for breakfast
- Chris (8/5): Very good - Staff were loverly Breakfast was extra cost
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (10/5): Fantastic Find! Thoroughly recommended - Everything! Lovely staff, beautiful room, comfy bed with good night sleep. The food was amazing . Great beer and beer garden. A classy establishment! Nothing.
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Helen (10/5): Had a wonderful night at the Saxon Inn, food was fab too - very pretty village, we were on an over stopover so didn’t get chance to looks around the area, but the countryside looked stunning Nothing
- Steven (10/5): A hidden jewel in Dorset's crown. - There was everything to like and nothing to fault about this remarkable establishment. From the moment I stepped in the door to the moment I left I was made to feel welcome and was impeccably looked after by Sarah and her vibrant, friendly and hospitable team. The standard of decor throughout is extremely high. The choice of drinks was more than adequate and the quality and standard of the food was amazing with everything, as far as possible locally sourced. That I wasn't able to stay longer.
- Alex (9/5): Superb -
- Rachael (10/5): Idyllic place to stay and eat - Beautiful decor. A stylish gem in gorgeous countryside
- Simon (10/5): Absolutely amazing stay and place - Every now and then you find a really gem - and this is it ! A Fabulous find !
Herman the dog is lovely. Nothing !
- Simon (9/5): Loved it! - The property, restaurant, quality of food, and staff The shower was a bit lacklustre! Could do with a new pressure shower, otherwise everything else was just perfect.
- Charlotte (10/5): Kings and Queens - This is the most shining example of how outstanding hospitality looks!! The attention to detail in every aspect of our visit was extraordinary ...we could only stay one night but our hosts made us feel like Kings and Queens ...locally sourced dinner and breakfast and a sumptuous bed in a fabulously decorated character pub...bliss. ....that we couldn't stay longer!
- Roy (10/5): Amazing place. Amazing hosts. Amazing food. - The Saxon Inn is a truly beautiful country inn, full of charm and character. Each liitle area, corner and nook is styled and curated to perfection, and the special little attention to details really elevates this place above what you'd normally expect from a country inn. Every turn reveals an almost Instagrammable moment you'd want to capture.
The welcome from the hosts Sarah and Richard couldn't have been more friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. They really were consummate hosts and you could just tell they'd put their heart and soul into place and genuinely cared that their customers not only enjoyed their stay, but loved their stay.
The bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean and comfortable. The cooked breakfast in the morning was delicious and the fresh fruit and doorstep toast was amazing. Real coffee, real butter, and locally sourced products made this a breakfast to remember.
My partner and I didn't have an evening meal at the Inn when we arrived but really regretted it when we tasted the breakfast the following morning.
To add even more character to the place, the Saxon Inn also has two other permanent residents, the beautifully-docile and aloof Reggie (a gorgeous whippet), and Herman , an independent little dachshund who parades around wearing a bandana.
Overall, it's a superb place to stay and eat. We'd highly recommend it. The car park is quite small.
- Johnjmcd (10/5): Lovely rural inn - We were thoroughly satisfied with every aspect of our stay at the Saxon Inn. The accommodation was first class and the evening meal (and real ales in my case) were delicious. As we had a long drive the day of checkout we did not stay for breakfast.
Very much look forward to returning.
- Watson (9/5): A great place to eat and stay. - The food and room were excellent. The staff couldn't have been friendlier. Nothing
- Almudena (10/5): Exceptional - Everything. The hosts we're superb
- Penny (8/5): Very good -
- Jean (8/5): Very good -
- Stuart (10/5): Exceptional -
