Guest Reviews

- Michal (10/5): A cozy country hotel with a warm atmosphere, personal service, and a charming host. - The host was incredibly welcoming and eager to assist with great local tips. The property is stunning and located in a peaceful countryside setting. Our room was massive and very comfortable. With on-site parking, a private onsen, and a superb breakfast, it was a truly fantastic stay!
- Jessica (10/5): A charming stay - The hosts were very friendly and happy to let us practice our Japanese with them. Food was great, multiple courses and they checked in with us regularly. Onsen was lovely and the host provided great info about interesting places in the area. If you get a good night ask to see the telescope. Even when its too cloudy the set up is impressive. It is a little older and out of the way. We think that adds to the charm but others may not agree.

- Debbie (10/5): - Peaceful location. Friendly host couldn't do enough to help us and with Google translate we were given some recommendations for our onward journey. Wish we could have stayed another night too.
- Vikram (7/5): good too stay for one night. - the location and the overall homely feel the checkout process was disappointing. we were literally thrown out of the room at 9:30 even though the checkout said 10am. felt very intrusive.

- Kam Lung (8/5): -

- Muriel (5/5): Peculiar, not good price-quality, but maybe better in spring-summer and booked week(s) in advance. - Good location for nature lovers: in the woods. The small road to the bungalows from the main road is only 200 meters or so, and very passable (just a few potholes), not at all as bad (anymore?) as some earlier guests said. Room was heated when we arrived. Wonderful view on Aso volcano in the distance. Good breakfast. Private onsen for limited timeslots upon reservation at the reception the day before. Our room smelled very strongly of mold. Also after heating 24 hours, the bad smell was still there, it was hard to sleep in. Dinner should be booked at least three days in advance. There is an ok Indian restaurant for dinner at the main road (200 meters from the accommodation), but if that would not be open it is a 20' drive to the nearest restaurant of convini. Breakfast is very early (7.30-8.00), all have to leave the breakfast room at 8.00.
- Rong Xuan (10/5): Would love to revisit - Very pleasant experience staying in this accommodation. Owner is really nice and there is a star watching platform which when its clear skies owner offer us to star watching. Close to Kuju skiing forest. Room is spacious and there is private onsen which you can book during your stay. Non
- Faith (8/5): Def worth a night when visiting Kuju. - The hosts are my favorite part of the stay... Really nice and friendly old couple.. Love the onsen too.
- Choon Kiat (10/5): It was lovely and we will definitely come back here to stay again if we are travelling in Kyushu. - I liked how clean the hotel was and the staff was super friendly and helpful in helping us to navigate our way around Kyushu. Furthermore, they served us excellent breakfast during our stay here. Nil
- Dah Wei David (9/5): Comfortable stay hotel - Family hotel run by an old couple. Manager very informative. Advised on what to see in vicinity. Also has a small observatory onsite to look at the stars and moon when the nights are clear. Breakfast and dinner good. Room and beds clean and comfortable. Comfortable heating. Nothing. Hotel cannot be located on Google map. Its about 3 mins from Kuju Flower Park. Head towards Kuju Flower Park. Once there, use the directional guide from Booking.com to make your way to hotel.
- swsiew (10/5): Beautiful Home in the Woods - Peaceful and quiet location. A truly delocious & memorable 5 course dinner that was lovingly prepared by the hostess who together with her husband were the perfect & gracious hosts.
A rare treat to see the stars at the host's own observatory. Lovely onsen that was very welcome on a cold evening.
We love the quote of our host : "My wife does all the cooking so I cannot look her in the eye". Nothing.
- Soppet (10/5): Comfortable accommodation and excellent hosts - Excellent hosts, comfortable room, and French country style food. Nothing significant.comes to mind.

- Michiel (10/5): - Onsen, friendly staff Nothing
- Guest (8/5): Cool retreat in the humid Japanese summer - A pretty and spacious location, convenient to everything in the Kuju/Aso area. The reserved hot spring was very pleasant. The rooms were very quiet and spacious with all amenities, including good wifi. Hosts are friendly and the food was good and filling. The stay really revolves around taking the meals. Cool in summer. The house is aging a bit, as are the furnishings, although that gives it a type of retro charm. Managers were a bit too aggressive about time -- moving all dinner courses very quickly and hovering a lot, often interrrupting our private conversations. Check out is set at 10:00 but they told us to be out at 9:45 to be sure, and at 9:41, the manager was outside my room calling me to vacate. Interpreted my request for no seafood as me not wanting to eat sashimi - consequently shrimp and squid were included in one of the dishes.

- Andreas (9/5): In the misty mountains - Friendly and informative host. The hotel is located in Kuju mountains far away from shops and restaurants, a car is must. Location is great for visiting the surrounding nature attractions. Breakfast was excellent as was the private onsen. Room was very big for japanese hotel. A bit dated rooms, slow wifi. It was cloudy / rain on both nights so no stargazing.
- Sean (10/5): A great stay in March 2025.. Cozy enclave to explore Kurokawa - The husband and wife team running this property is amazing. Their breakfast was prepared and served with pride, and attention to detail. I love the little touches in their tea room. A piano, shelves of books and interesting paraphernalia all contribute to a wonderful homey British countryside vibe. The vast space outside the property includes a hammock and an observatory. The owner is happy to bring you to explore the stars at 8pm there. Our teens had great fun there.
We are an entourage of 7 including an elderly who ocassionally uses the wheelchair. We didnt find it hard to get around the property. We love the space of the bedrooms and the privacy of this whole compound. Also love the private onsen where you had to walk just 2 min out(still within the compounds) and you have the whole place to yourself for 50 minutes i think? It was basic but comforting. Just the thing to unwind to after a long day driving around. Booking required.
Please note the dinner has to be booked 2 days in advance. We forgot about it and regretted since the breakfast was so yummy.
- 88js (8/5): Very good - The serene environment. The delicious dinner and breakfast. The warm hospitality by the host who tries his very best to effectively communicate with us. There is ongoing retrofitting in one of the blocks.
- Kathy (10/5): Special stay in central Kyushu - Delightful stay in the country with wonderful hosts. We enjoyed a private onsen before an outstanding multi-course Japanese/French dinner. One of the best meals of our trip. This was followed with the host treating guests to star/planet viewing in his observatory.
The room was simple but very spacious and comfortable. The grounds were well maintained with a beautiful and peaceful view. It felt like a destination on its own right and it is very convenient for visiting several nearby national parks. With google translate it was very easy to communicate with the host. Our stay was a very special experience and is a highly recommended stay in central Kyushu. N/A
- Wendy (10/5): Very friendly owner. - We had dinner & breakfast at the property & the food was excellent. Not applicable
- Emilia (10/5): Amazing host, very helpful, glorious stay with sky observatory and private onsen - Extremely helpful host and great facilities at the place. Big garden park area, the sky observatory. Very generous and variable breakfast.very happy that we could book private onsen there at the place. Slightly bad WiFi and very early breakfast if you are young 7:30-8:15
- Saw (10/5): Exceptional - Simply amazing place. The owner is such a lovely and friendly man, we loved the cottage esp the bathroom is so spacious. The private onsen can be booked and definitely a must do. The surroundings are beautiful, we had a great time watching the stars at night with other guests, a memorable experience we will not forget. Breakfast is delicious esp the bread and coffee, great service and serene view from the dining room.
- Chee (8/5): Very good -
- Apichit (9/5): Superb - The owner was nice
- Lily (10/5): Great place to stay! - the view, the rare host Naoosho san was so nice. words cannot describe his hospitality. Naoosho san has great advise re where to travel. He is an astronomer and gracefully invited us to watch stars in his private observatory. It was fascinating!
The breakfast was yummy. Full of thought and delicious 😋

- John (9/5): Superb -
- Morrison (10/5): Excellent stay in peaceful setting with wonderful hosts and amazing food - I echo other reviews. The Host couple was very hospitable and obviously take great pride in this place and providing excellent service and meals.
The room was very large and comfortable. Setting was very peaceful and we enjoyed the onsens after dinner. Unfortunately it was cloudy so we didn’t get to use the telescope. Make sure you are accurate with your arrival time and punctual for dinner. The dinner is many courses so needs to be prepared well in advance. They take great care in preparation and serving the dinner so being punctual is the courteous thing to do. Allow extra time as google maps seemed to provide very optimistic drive times in the area.
- Sebastian (8/5): Very good - Very friendly host and staff. Good breakfast
- Kim (10/5): The owner Matsutake san and wife are wonderful hosts. They make you feel right at home. Place is cosy and clean, althoug - The hosts,
The food,
The comfortable bed
The cleanliness The dust under the bed.
Most of the restaurants around the area close at 5pm, so better book their dinner or drive about 20 mins to a nearby town to look for food.
- Hans-juergen (10/5): Excellent. - Operated by a very, very nice and helpful couple.
- Sharon (10/5): Wonderful experience in Mt Aso - Wonderful host: warm hearted n kind.
Willing to help us with reccomendations for sight seeing .
Astronomy : brought us star gazing in his personal observatory. Saw planets n constellations. Was a magical experience
Delicious food made with love
The on site onsen was nice : can book for personal use with no additional charge
Near to various attractions like Kurokawan Onsen , Mt Aso etc Will need to drive for access because is very remote. But roads are good n safe.May need snow tyres if winter
- Ee (9/5): Unique Experience which surpasses regular hotels - The observatory star viewing at night and the meals. The owner/caretaker are extremely friendly and welcoming. The location is a quick drive amidst many other lodging options. What stood out were the hospitality, the meals and the unique observatory viewing. It is a real gem amidst other standard hotels around the area. There was even a hot plate meal and his macaroni and cheese creation which was extremely delightful. The carpark to the room was a short walk away. Recommend that you check in first (without luggage) then make your way to collect them. The place has 2 sides. I stayed at the side with the single level which was a short walk away and nearer to the onsen.
- Pongphan (10/5): Exceptional - Food is excellent. We booked a dinner and breakfast. It was delicious. And Star observatory camera services on the clear sky day. Private onsen for family and need to book. Nothing
- Alicia (10/5): Exceptional - very friendly host who went out of his way to chat with us about our trip & gave us tips for the rest of our time in kyushu. he is very passionate about astronomy and even showed us his observatory. we opted for half board and the food was amazing. rooms were huge and comfy as well.
- Clarence (6/5): Service was good but facilities were bad . - Owner was very friendly and warm. Breakfast was good. Rusty and rundown. The facilities need major upgrading and maintenance .
- Limin (10/5): It was a memorable stay. Will stay again if we come back to this area. - It's in a very quiet location surrounded by trees. The four couse dinner was very tasty with great presentations. After dinner, the host was kind enough to show us the stars from his observatory.
It was a lifetime experience to see Jupiter and Saturn from the telescope. Breakfast was very nice as well. The hosts prepared for us earlier than usual by our request. We are very much appreciated! No
- Leny (10/5): Amazing stay at a beautiful Japanese Bed & Breakfast - The accommodation is run by a very kind and caring couple. They are very interested and care about their guests. During the evening we had an amazing 4 course dinner and in the morning an amazing breakfast. Also, we could make use of the private onsen during the evening and watched Jupiter and the moon in the observatory which was both very special. When there was snow during breakfast, the owner took care of us by checking the road conditions and help us deciding the route. Thank you very much for the truly wonderful and perfect stay. We enjoyed it very much.
- Uthumporn (9/5): Value to money and hope to be there again in the future. - Good Location and easy to find the house. I have booked both dinner and breakfast which are more than expectation. All are very good. The owner is very friendly and help us for the next day program that could get some more beautiful view from this area. Nowhere to visit. If didn't book dinner you have to prepare something to eat before check in.
- Nicole (8/5): Very good -
- Yoni (9/5): Superb - The host was exceptionally friendly, and the area surrounding the cottages was pleasant. The apartment itself was clean, spacious and convenient, with a nice balcony facing the woods. I think it would especially suit a family vacation.
- Janet (8/5): For a one night stay is comfortable . A nice friendly old couple . The hot bath was a surprise and nice gesture - Simple and fuss free Nothing
- Eeegee (10/5): Amazing stay in the middle of the mountains! - This is a great piece of land in between Mt Aso and Kuju. The environment was so peaceful and serene. Our stay was filled with rain but it didn't stop us from using the onsen both nights. The room was clean and very spacious. And the owner and his wife were really kind and helpful. The furniture was a bit older and there's not much around (10-20 min drive to closest restaurant/stores).
- Haim (10/5): Exceptional - Charming accommodation managed by a lovely couple.
Very nice onsen that can booked for private use for no extra charge.
It is the ideal place to stay if you visit Mount Aso and the Kurokawa area None
Just be aware, that it is a bit remote place. the closest town (Taketa) is about 20 minutes away by car.
- Yew (6/5): Pleasant -
- Ket (8/5): Very good - It was dark when we arrived and was very foggy. The road to the hotel was hard to see. There was no light on the path. Nearest restaurant was 6km away.
- Lim (8/5): Very good -
- Roi (10/5): Exceptional - The place is in great location! The owner was super nice and helped us alot when we nedded help even things that are not about the place just because he wants to help. The rooms was so big consider that a lot of the rooms in japan are very small.
- Gabriela (10/5): Heaven on earth - Everything is amazing. It looks like heaven. Reality is so much better than the pictures. Everything is so beautiful, quiet and green.
I will list some details below that are not included on booking, to help people decide if they wanna visit this beautiful and peaceful place:
1. There is an amazing observatory in the middle of the yard and the owner is an amazing astronomy sensei. During the 3 nights that we spent there, every night there was a star observation and explanation session. Using his high-tech telescope, we were able to observe amazing nebulas (M21, M22 and M27), as well as stars about to become supernovas (+ many other stars). It was for us a unique experience. We did not speak much Japanese but he really tried to do his best to translate using Google.
2. There is a very nice private onsen (hot bath). You just need to reserve a time slot and unlike most places in Japan, you can enjoy the onsen with your partner in quiet and peace.
3. Beautiful hydrangea garden.
4. Very nice huge flower park just near the pension. We did also blueberry picking there.
5. The pension looks a lot like a chalet and there are tons of green spaces, hammocks and you get a lot of privacy.
6. Located in the heart of Aso-Kuju mountains, you can visit the crater of Aso in less than 1h and there are plenty of trails on Kuju and the nearby mountains.
7. Room is huge, so much space compared to any other place we ever stayed in Japan for the last 5 years. We wished we would have longer.
We were not big fans of the breakfast. It is a set course and you cannot select. It is quite early in the morning (7.30-8.15) but it is perfect if you want to start hiking early. The breakfast venue is simply splendid and you have a beautiful view.
- Urs (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roxanne (10/5): heart-warming - We have an medical emergeny situation. The host was very kind to help us out. Really appreciate their kindess, when i am back Kyushu, I would love to visit them! nothing
- Wee (9/5): Special place with a special hosts - There is great facilities, including a observatory with a functioning telescope that the host will use to do star-gazing with guest on clear nights. THe host is very friendly and helpful and the food (dinner and breakfast) served are excellent. Room is basic but clean. Nothing
- Anthony (4/5): Not much around area - Host Our room, but the facility has multiple buildings with rooms
- Conrad (9/5): A relaxing stay in the forest - Nice location in the forest. A very big room, with nice workmanship in wood. Very comfy beds. Nice to have a private bath. Western style breakfast. Property is great. Be aware there aren’t many dinner options in the area and no convenience stores.
- Petcharin (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast and dinner are excellent. The owner very enthusiastic , funny , and friendly. Room size, good private onsen. etc
- Kenza (10/5): Exceptional - This place was just amazing: it was exactly like the pictures, a cute and quiet place to stay in nature.
The room was big and clean and it had two windows with view on the forest.
We also had access to the private bath (in another building) that was beautiful and relaxing.
Last but not least, the owners were so thoughtful and nice! They took time showing us the moon in the Observatory and during breakfast they gave us a lot of good recommendations for the rest of our trip.
I am highly recommending!
- Kok (9/5): Wonderfully Hosted and Quiet Property - Private and quiet property with timesheet booking private hot bath. Wonderful and engaging host. Good fusion dinner and breakfast. Big room over looking woods and some Sakura trees. Nil
- Stav (9/5): Superb - It was a great stay in a wide green spot, with lots of nature around. The owners are great, nice, attentive and do so much to make your stay the best possible. The inner onsen is really nice.
- Clarence (10/5): Highly recommended! - Exceptional location and lovely couple managing the hotel. Lovely room and meals. Unfortunately, we had bad weather, so could not entirely enjoy the surroundings.
