Guest Reviews
- Zee (10/5): Home away from home. - May was very helpful and accommodating. Very homely and great for meeting others as well as retreating undisturbed.
The neighborhood seemed very safe, friendly and welcoming, even at night down dark alleyways.
Access was simple and secure.
Very clean.
Shared common area on ground floor would suit small gatherings of friends.
All very good for what it is. It isn't an apartment with your own private kitchen, appliances, parking or ensuite. But that's not what May's cottage is. It's a room in a home shared with others, and a very nice one at that.
- Lauren (10/5): Amazing location, super quiet home, has everything you need - May's Cottage is a lovely little home hidden on a small, quiet street. It's in a great part of Hanoi, close to the expat-heavy Tay Ho on the other side of the lake, as well as the old town, but this side of the lake is a bit more local. Lots of great restaurants, cafes, and shops around. I really loved the area, very walkable and quiet. The home has 1-2 rooms per floor, with a well-equipped kitchen and a couch on the main floor. It was easy to meet other guests in passing in the kitchen or while doing laundry. I met some amazing people! The hosts were quick to respond and easy to communicate with. I had only one minor issue, and they fixed it immediately. The rooms at the front of the house have nice, big windows, and I think they would be fairly bright. The rooms at the back of the house (where I stayed) don't get any sunlight because the window faces another building. The value is great for either option. A fridge in the kitchen would be nice, so I could store my food there instead of the mini-fridge in my room. But I think this is a fairly small issue for most people, and it certainly wouldn't prevent me from staying again.
- Shatlyk (10/5): - Thank you, we love there
- Richards (10/5): -
- Nozima (10/5): - I had such a relaxing stay here. The homestay is located in a lovely, quiet neighbourhood—it was so nice to escape the hustle and bustle at the end of the day and actually get a great night's sleep.
The house was well thought out and had absolutely everything a person could need. It was fully equipped with all the essentials, making it feel like a true home away from home. If you're looking for a comfortable, quiet base in a nice area, I couldn't recommend this place more.
- Lidia (10/5): The best stay in Hanoi! - We booked this room last minute after a misadventure with another booking. The host welcomed us within minutes, was helpful and sweet. The room is big, bed is super comfortable, there is a desk, AC, fan, fridge, kettle, toiletries, all you need for a comfortable stay. There are several bathrooms, one in every floor so you only share it with 1 more room. Free laundry, free snacks, free water, free coffees and teas and a full kitchen that can be use anytime. Internet was strong and stable for working. The neighborhood is quiet, with all needed around. Close to the center but still quiet and comfortable, a short taxi ride to the Old Quarter. It’s a 2mins walk to the lake. There is a code at door, so it felt very safe.
Overall a great value!

- Anjalee (10/5): Exceptional - It's a really cozy, clean place in a local area away from the tourist hotspots. May was really kind and maintained good communication since the day I made the booking. The free to use washing machine was a life saver after if you're staying here for a few days. Being close to the west lake gives you a great opportunity to take nice evening walks. It takes 15-20 min or more depending on the traffic to get to Old Quarter and other tourist areas from here on Grab. So need to plan ahead when you have tight schedules.
- Pradeep (10/5): Great stay - Facilities and service
- Katy (10/5): Exceptional - they left us a little bowing gift at the end, good instructions for finding the place, bed was the most comfortable bed ever, so soft, location was far out but we liked this and with grabs we could explore the city, hosts helpful at every moment! really enjoyed our stay nothing
- Hamid (10/5): Very pleasant place and host - Very clean and attention to detail
- Gianluca (10/5): Exceptional -
- Windy (10/5): Exceptional - My stay there was amazing. May and her family are extremely kind and generous. The room was really big and comfortable and I loved all the small details and the toiletries offered. The location is perfect if you don’t want to be in the noisy busy old quarter (15 mins drive) and walking distance to nice cafes and bars in the Tay Ho Neighborhood.
I would highly recommend this place! Nothing !!!
- Sophie (10/5): If we come back to Hanoi we come back to May! - Super clean and tidy. Good location it was very calm and safe. Not too far from the old quarter (we did walk there takes ish an hour) good views of lake and plenty of nice cafe to stop by. The room was basic but very cozy and comfortable. The host was super sweet and always had snacks and noodles available! Could use a small mirror in the room, bur really not a major issue.
- Zoe (9/5): Lovely room with good facilities in a cosy neighbourhood - I met the host and her family, they were lovely and helped me out. The room has many things to make the stay comfortable and the bed was comfy too. I was served vegetarian food and it was delicious (it is included in the price!). I had a good night's sleep.
The area is safe and cute. The only thing I would say is that it is difficult to navigate if your gps fails you. Nevertheless, the pictures provided help you locate it.
- Lucas (10/5): Exceptional - The stay was super smooth and we were very happy about the accommodation. It had everything we needed, it was very clean, we're able to do laundry, had lots of space and easy communication with the lovely hosts. Highly recommended.
We even got a radiator for the cold nights. Nothing to complain at all. Some prefer staying right in the centre/old town but we loved to be a bit outside the crowd, very silent and relaxing.
- Mba (10/5): Exceptional -
- Olga (10/5): a tidy beautiful place and a hospitable hostess - I had a nice stay at the property. The whole place was clean, cosy and nicely decorated. All the appliences worked well. There was a stable Wi-Fi connection. I enjoyed the room with a street view. The room was of a decent size. The high ceilings in the property added to the feeling of comfort. It was handy to be able to use the washing machine on the top floor. The hostess was nice and friendly. The area was peaceful and the lake was in a walking distance. I was missing a TV in the room. There is only one balcony at the property and that is on the top floor where one can wash/dry clothes. That is for those who believe that they book a room with a balcony. There are cafes by the lake but restaurants are quite few. One needs to take a Grab taxi for pretty everything.
- Garry (10/5): Home from home in Hanoi - Home from home, everything you could want/need. Owned by a wonderful family who live next door and are always willing to help with anything. Always clean and tidy. Great facilities. Good location only a few minutes from the lake. I would give 11 if I could - been travelling for a long time and this is the most comfortable place I've stayed. All good.
- Carol (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steven (10/5): It was an absolute stroke of luck for me and I will be back at "May's Cottage" on my next visit! Come on, - -good location
-incredibly nice hosts
-a fully equipped kitchen
-nice terrace to relax -
- Dmitry (9/5): Excellent option for travelers - The room was very big and clean.
The host was hospitable.
The location is quite good (I could sleep well, no noise outside; also, the lake is quite close)
- Sander (8/5): Very good - The location was really good, the people were very friendly. Good price. There were some cockroaches in the room unfortunately.
- Roni (6/5): Sorry but I would not book it again or recommend... - The room was big and clean and had a big window so natural light can come in.
The neighborhood is quiet and there are many cafes and restaurants around. We took a room with private bathroom. The bathroom is separate from the room, so to pass between the room and the bathroom you need to cross in the hallway so no complete privacy. It makes it uncomfortable and my problem was also that it is not clear at all when you book the room - it was a bad surprise.
Second thing was the service- We didn't get information in advance and when we got to the place everything was locked and unclear. No answer on the phone. We spend 10-15 minutes of confusion in the heat until some neighbor passed and told us where should we knock... after check in we didn't see any person and the communication on the phone was not smooth at all....
- Finlay (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely place and cool location. Really really helpful staff and comfy beds :) Nothing :) great place
- Shuat.t (9/5): Superb - Excellent budget homestay, friendly host, clean and fully equipped home, good wifi at a historic neighborhood with local alley lifestyle. Near to west lake, most sight need a ride.
- Caroline (9/5): Superb -
- Alex_512 (7/5): Good - Very kind and dedicated host. I arrived late and she offered me food.
Clean
Room equipped with all the essentials (AC, fan, kettle, fridge)
Nice common kitchen The doors are made of hardwood, they slam very loud. It can be heard in the whole building when someone closes one. I woke up many times during the night and felt so exhausted.
The host could try a quick fix but putting foam on the door joints, or write some label to remind guests of being silent during night time.
The windows have little soundproofing. Chicken noises early in the morning.
Bathroom was shared: this detail wasn't advertised in the title
- Яна (10/5): Exceptional - love the host ! beautiful family and nice place! (i didn’t have a window in my room but that’s ok for a short trip)
- Rafael (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect! I felt extremely comfortable and welcome.
- Evelien (9/5): Superb - Our stay was really comfortable. Nice bed, nice bathroom (no problem it was a shared one). May invited us both nights to have diner, unfortunately we’ve read her message on booking too late😅😅 otherwise this would be a nice experience. Her husband took us to our bus stop at 5:00 o clock in the morning, free of charge! Including some apples and rice cakes! So kind.
- Clément (10/5): Exceptional - We arrived late in this cottage and we've been upgraded to a better room for free. May also cook some food for us to complete our instant noodles !
Everything was clean and tidy. The room has heater and insulated curtains and I think it was the best bathroom we had in Vietnam so far..
We will come back for sure, highly recommend it 🙏
- Anders (10/5): Exceptional - 10/10 without a doubt - it's a prime example of value for money. May and her husband literally provide everything you need, much more than you receive in many hostels. They are very genuine, it's clear that they really care about their guests. Very homely, peaceful and quiet, located in one of the nicest areas outside of Old Quarter. I can't think of any critique. The price they take is as economical as it gets, and yet they provide everything you need.
- Anthonyc (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly welcome, very quiet and comfortable. Nice area of Hanoi with lots of character. Useful little shop 1 minute away.Highly recommended Not very easy to find but a friendly neighbour helped. I should have looked at the picture of the entrance that was provided.
- Vũ (10/5): Perfect - I had a wonderful vacation at this homestay. The rooms were clean, comfortable and well-equipped. The host was friendly, helpful and supportive at all times. The location of the homestay was also very convenient, close to the city center and many tourist attractions. I was very satisfied with the service and price of this homestay. I will recommend it to my friends and family when they come to Hanoi. Thank you homestay for giving me a memorable experience.
- Reinis (10/5): Exceptional - Super nice place, clean, silent and the host + her son were kind, they shared a meal with me and we had great conversation 😊 Highly recomend for their hospitality 💚
- Jeremy (9/5): Superb - good amenities if you get 4th or 5th floor you need to climb up and down every time
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (10/5): Great stay in Hanoi - Second time staying! Still great second time round.
- Jia (10/5): Great stay and memory. - very clean, very quiet, host is very quick to answer all the inquiries you may have. I seldom stay in one place more than one day, this place is where I lay on the bed in the morning, and begin to reserve for another night, it’s a great sleep. Only I have to climb to the fourth floor, a bit tired, with a sprained foot, this is a minor issue.
- Ranjan (10/5): Awesome & most memorable stay - The hospitality of the host was amazing. She had been in a regular touch from the day the property was booked. The house not only had toiletries but even the kitchen was filled with eateries & the host had allowed to use all the eateries we wish to use. She had been very helpful & approachable. Everything was amazing, exceptionally good & the host is amazing
- Scott (10/5): Good choice for this area - Quiet, clean, super nice family and good value.
- Laura (10/5): I wish more homestays were like this - May's Cottage is the best example of what a homestay should be: they make you feel at home. The bed is comfy, they prepare all your room with little added extras and we didn't want for anything. They have toiletries out for everyone - even a toothbrush and toothpaste - to use and free tea, coffee, and snacks. The kitchen is amazing and the first one we've been able to use in Vietnam. The washing machine is also free to use. It's also in a quiet neighbourhood. It's hard to fault a place like this. Thank you to the family for this lovely stay. We love this place! It's a little far away from places, but not difficult to reach anywhere by bus from the main road. Other guests slammed the doors which woke us up but we told the owners about this and they said they would try to get it fixed. We'll be going back for sure so we will review again to see if they fix the doors!
- Mélina (10/5): Home away from home - I absolutely loved my stay at May's Cottage, in fact I came back to the house 3 times !
It felt like a home far away from home in Hanoi.
At first it may be a bit difficult to find so make sure you pinpoint the location on Google Maps and Grab.
The host and her family were the cutest ! She offered me food and even organised a dinner party for the guests to attend.
The room was spacious, bright and cozy. The shared bathroom was clean.
If you're looking for a peaceful place to stay, away from the busy streets of Hanoi, I 100% recommend this place, you won't be disappointed.
- Samuel (10/5): Nice cozy and friendly place to stay while you explore hanoi! - The location was amazing and the host mother was so sweet she brought me fruit and snacks to try, it was a nice cozy atmosphere. Highly reccomend the stay for solo and couples. There is a list of amendities including snacks and teas. I wish I could stay longer but it was booked out, definitely book in advance and not during major holidays.
- Nvhoanghai (10/5): The place that you will make you feel like home in Hanoi. - The place and the host are absolutely amazing. Will be back Nothing
- Richard (10/5): Unbelievable stay, thank you so much May - Everything
The host is amazing, the WiFi is unbelievably good.
Extremely comfortable and clean.
Very good value for money.
Free laundry and snacks.
How can you possibly complain. Nothing
- Anneli (10/5): Peaceful and homely place - perfect for venturing further to Tay Ho and exploring further out! - Wow, May's Cottage surpassed all of my expectations! The location is super lovely, and I loved the neighbourhood and location - so close to the lake and many cafes. The rooftop was a really serene place and I was very grateful for the option of doing laundry too. Everything was really well thought out - from extra toiletries in the rooms and house slippers to duvets when the weather got cold. The owner is incredibly lovely and sweet and was very accommodating to me staying an extra night and even, very kindly shared a delicious vegan meal with me! :)
I was sad to leave and honestly tried to cancel a booking I'd had for another place just to stay a wee bit longer! The only thing that could possibly be better is that the room I was in didn't have much natural light with the window facing a brick wall, but honestly, it wasn't that bad and didn't really impact my stay! :)
- Agnes (10/5): Exceptional - The room was clean and our host was very kind and helpful. :) We had a room with a nice big window and the area was silent. Everything was completely fine.
- Emma (9/5): Superb - Owner was lovely and room was super comfortable. Lovely quiet spot around the lake. Kitchen has lots of provisions for making your own food Hard to figure out hot water in the shower
- Jacquie (10/5): Absolutely fantastic gem of a guest house! - May thought of everything!!!!!!
Slippers for the main part of the house, sunflowers for the room, coffee and treats while we waited for the room to be cleaned, (she let us check in early and told us there was no rush the day we left and we could stay as long as we wanted!) , all toiletries were available for us including toothpaste!
Fridge, tea and coffee available in the room.
The shared bathroom (only 2 rooms shared it) was absolutely spotless!!!!!! There is nothing we could complain about.
- Weinicus (10/5): Great spot, great location, clean - Clean, spacious, great location for a good night's sleep.
- Ana93 (10/5): Exceptional - The cottage is very clean and has everything you need
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alba (10/5): Lovely host - The owner was absolutely lovely and went out of her way to make my stay comfortable.
- Livock (10/5): Exceptional -
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional - Only a few minutes walk from the lake, very comfortable, fantastic cost-benefit, great family owners & speak English, a home away from home. Went to stay a few days and stayed a month! Fully equipped kitchen, rooftop terrace, live in the alleys like the locals but still close to everything in Tay Ho (expat area of Ha Noi).
