Guest Reviews
- Family from Aus (10/5): - The view was fantastic, the room was really comfortable and the dinner was our best in Ecuador!
- Katie (8/5): Beautiful hostel with view of Pasachoa - Beautiful hostel with nice and comfortable rooms, and excellent food! I have lived in Ecuador for 7 years and this was some of the best food I've had. I didn't realize that it wasn't facing Cotopaxi but that was my fault for not researching better. Still a beautiful view of Pasochoa.
- Samara (10/5): Recommend!! Great location that we could cycle to cotopaxi. Food was delicious and rooms amazing! - Such beautiful hosts. Food was amazing, room was spacious with stunning views and the best shower and comfiest beds in Ecuador! It is out of town but that’s what makes it special!
- Philip (9/5): - The room was very comfortable and clean, with a very comfy bed and a hot shower. Darwin, the host, is very friendly and helpful, and a great cook. All meals, breakfast and dinner, were excellent. Darwin gave a lot of advice about good hikes in the area, including logistics and taxis etc The basin does not have hot water. It should at this price point.
- William (10/5): -
- Lawrence (9/5): 1 night high in the mountains near Cotopaxi - Great room, food, views Hard to find with GPS and access roads are in bad shape. You need a high clearance vehicle to get there….
- Gideon (10/5): -
- adrian (9/5): Top godny polecenia bardzo klimatyczny - Bardzo klimatyczny fajny hotelik butikowy
- William (10/5): Outstanding value, cuisine, staff that were super friendly and accommodating!! - Everything!!! Darwin and his staff are excellent!!! I was there for 5 nights in February while my son climbed Illiniza and Cotopaxi. I don't climb anymore so I needed a comfortable place to wait for him to get finished. I booked initially at Tambopaxi and it is a great place too with views of Cotopaxi but a good bit more expensive- I am very glad I changed to here. The views were exceptional. Super comfortable bed! The food!!! There is no way anywhere could beat the extraordinary cuisine!!! Darwin is a first class chef!!!! So fresh and beautiful presentation!! I am very happy with my stay and would certainly recommend to anyone traveling through!! Nothing.
- Triin (9/5): -
- Sarah (7/5): - Bester Koch ever!! Das Dinner ein Traum, bestes Essen in 6 Monaten Südamerika! Preis war teuer zu dem alten Zimmer.
- Stephen (8/5): A cozy, family-run bnb with exceptional food. - A friendly, family-run establishment nestled near the Cotopaxi national park. It had exceptional food as our host Darwin is a chef, we enjoyed chatting with him over food by the fire, and he introduced us to some good Ecuadorian music, as well as provided bikes to cycle to the park. We enjoyed our rooms which were cozy and colourful, however the Balcony room we chose had more of a bay window than balcony, and there was no curtain for some reason. Good for people to get up at the crack of dawn I guess!
- Monica (10/5): An unforgettable, incredible, delicious, tranquil experience! - Everything! First of all, Darwin is an exceptional host who goes above and beyond for his guests. You can tell he is passionate about his guesthouse and cares for his guests. And he is an incredible chef!!! Every single meal my partner and I ate here was superb. We had chicken, soup, beef, fish, and local dishes that Darwin cooked that were tasty, flavorful, healthy, and nourishing. We stayed in the suite and it was comfortable and cozy. We woke up every morning to a beautiful view of the volcanoes. Darwin was so patient with us whenever we asked dozens of questions about the hikes in the area! He was so helpful in arranging a guide for Iliniza Norte - and our guide, Patricio, was friendly, kind, fun, and a great guide. Also, Juan picked us up from the airport, drove us to the trailhead of Corazón, and drove us back to Quito - he is also so kind, friendly, welcoming, and happy! Thank you to Darwin, Juan, and Patricio for an incredible time. We can’t wait to come back! We wish we could have stayed longer!!!
- Jim (9/5): - Super-friendly and helpful
- Frances (10/5): Simply delightful! - We had a delightful stay - the rooms were lovely, clean and comfortable, the common spaces very homely and the food cooked by the chef and Darwin was a true highlight of our trip! Darwin was very accommodating and helped us organise a couple of day trips and a ride to the airport. All staff incredibly lovely and courteous. N/a
- Patrice (10/5): -
- Wolfgang (10/5): -
Danke - Darwin hat all unsere Wünsche organisiert.
- Macias (10/5): -
- Victor (10/5): - Very special place. Staff is amazing, impeccable service. Views from the suite are breathtaking... Wish I would have stayed longer.
- Andrzej Chadzynski (9/5): - Excellent service and absolutely stunning dinner (steaks)! Recommend to stay even if just to enjoy the dinner.
- MATEO (3/5): -
- javier (10/5): Great staff, location and restaurant! - The staff is amazing. Super friendly and always trying to help. Also the views are super! And the food!!!
- Judith (10/5): Great place to stay with very friendly staff! - We loved our stay, which is close to the North Entrance of the Cotapaxi National Park. The room was of good size. During our stay it was a bit cold, but at night the blankets keep you very warm. So be prepared which cloth you take with you!
In the restaurant is a fireplace which makes breakfast and dinner very comfortable.
Compliments to chef who is preparing all the meals. Breakfast is more than enough with nicely made smoothies and scrambled eggs. Dinner the steak / chicken and soup were delicious and cheap.
They arranged our horse riding trip in Cotapaxi , which was incredible beautiful!
Also Juan pick us up from Quito and later on drove us for a whole day to Laguna Limpiopungo , Laguna Quilotoa and drop us in Latacunga for a reasonable price.
We really enjoyed our 2 nights here. It could be cold in the room and shower.
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - The meals are prepared by a Chef. The rooms are clean. Very close to North entrance of Cotopaxi. They really go out of their way to make you feel welcome. I stayed a whole week. I loved it.
- Stephen (8/5): Our host was very attentive, served excellent food - Nice location and hospitable All was fine
- Natasha (10/5): Amazing!!!!! - We had a fantastic stay at the Ruta de los Volcanes hotel, which is conveniently located just 6 kilometers from the north entrance to Cotopaxi National Park. The room was spotless, with a very comfy bed and an immaculate bathroom. The atmosphere was incredibly quiet, and the rooms were well-insulated from any outside noise.
Just outside our room, there was a cozy shared area with a coffee maker and a lovely fireplace, perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure. The restaurant’s fireplace kept the ambiance warm and inviting, enhancing the overall dining experience.
The food was a major highlight. Breakfasts were varied and delicious. On our first night, we enjoyed a wonderfully prepared soup that set the tone for the rest of our meals. The “pollo a la piedra” and “lomo a la piedra” were so delightful that we ordered them two nights in a row. Each night, the sides were thoughtfully varied: one night, we had perfectly seasoned small potatoes with a fresh salad, and the next night, we enjoyed crispy chips and a delicious cooked vegetable salad. The hot rock cooking method kept the food warm throughout the meal and allowed us to cook each piece to our preference. My husband loved being able to cook his meat exactly how he liked, and I enjoyed crisping up my chicken pieces as I ate.
The owner, who is also the chef, was exceptionally friendly and made the entire experience wonderful. His culinary skills were evident in every dish, showcasing his extensive experience and passion for cooking.
The hotel also offers a variety of outdoor activities, including guided horseback tours organized with the local community. The proximity to the Rumñahui volcano trail, the Cotopaxi volcano, and the beautiful Cascadas Condor Machay waterfalls, with their stunning cascades, made our stay even more enjoyable.
Overall, we had an amazing experience and highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking to explore the area in comfort and style.
- Robin (9/5): Superb - This was a beautiful b&b in the countryside near Cotopaxi. I loved the views and tranquility. The family that runs it is very kind. They have a taxi service and picked me up and dropped me off in the nearby town of Machachi ($30 round trip). Breakfast was good and the food I ordered for dinner was tasty and fresh. They also offered me a free canelazo (hot drink with passion fruit and pineapple). Bring warm clothes as it is quite chilly at night even with lots of blankets on the bed.
- Jan (10/5): - Darwin is a great host. He and his mom cooked us a great dinner and were very nice.
- Jaar (9/5): Superb - The owner Darwin is an excellent host and gives you perfect information about Cotopaxi. Beside that he is a very good cook, try the Lomo, it is delicious!
- Ondrej (9/5): Superb -
- Karolina (10/5): Great stay near beautiful volcanoes with delicious food :) - Ruta del volcanes was definitely a special place to stay! It is very close to the start of the trail to the Ruminahui volcano and Pasochoa volcano. It is calm, the rooms are spacious and clean and the best highlight - the food is AMAZING (the best we have eaten in Ecuador, like in a 5 star restaurant)
- Lucile (8/5): Beautiful lodge next to the mountains - Location and the food! Great restaurant and beautiful mountain views. It was pretty cold in the room but we had lots of blankets, and a fireplace to warm us up.
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional - Darwin was a super host and chef. He helped us organise a guide to take us up Cotopaxi (Patricio who also was amazing). Darwin provided great communication before we even arrived helping us get to his hotel via bus or taxi. Nice fire in the restaurant to dry off after a day of walking, hot water in the room, cozy bed Theres even a small shop opposite for any snacks
- Trevor (10/5): Exceptional - Great food and a super helpful staff!
- Asher (7/5): Great staff, Great location for Cotopaxi - Staff was very responsive. I have particular diet needs and they were able to accommodate. I was in the area to see Cotopaxi. The location was very good for that. I was cold. The room was never warm enough for me. Please understand that the elevation is approx 12, 000 feet up and I was not used to this but it did affect me. The staff had a heater placed in my room and there was also a fireplace, but I was still cold.
- Vincent (10/5): Exceptional -
- Saar (10/5): Great knowledge, great family, great food - My wife and I had an amazing stay at Ruta de los Volcanes. The family who run it made us feel incredibly welcome and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience.
They were generous with their time, helping us organise trips and making sure we saw the best of the area. The food in their restaurant was fantastic. fresh, homemade and perfect after a day hiking.
What made it extra special was their warmth and care. It felt more like staying with friends than at a hotel. We left with wonderful memories of Cotopaxi and real appreciation for the people who made our trip so memorable.
Highly recommend!
- Eupolisz (10/5): Great place, super food, nice owner and staff - location, staff, food, services
- Ariane (9/5): Superb - I've rarely seen a host this kind and helpful: Darwin went the extra mile to get everything we needed. The room were comfortable, food is amazing, and the property is very cozy. Special mention for the woodfire in cold temperatures. 100% recommend if you're in the region of cotopaxi.
- Jacob (7/5): Good - The best Food we have had in Ecuador! You need to order the potato soup! The location is 6 km from entrance to the Cotopaxi national park. We rented mountainbikes to bike up there in about 1 hour, 15 min.
- John (3/5): Don’t make the same mistake we did - Don’t be fooled by the pictures of the view as it really wasn’t worth all the downsides.
Firstly taxis/uber reluctant to serve the location of the property ( not surprising given poor condition of track leading up from Machachi).
Long power outages whilst not a fault of the owner do have a greater impact at altitude when cold, wet and dark. It speaks volumes of the owners attitude to his clients that he hasn’t invested in a generator.
Most of the time only heat/light came from fires in the common rooms. However they put more smoke in the room than heat, not pleasant at all.
No option but to eat here and the meals were poor value for money.
Our worst stay in our SA trip.
- Catherine (10/5): Exceptional - Location was amazing! Beds were very comfortable and the bathroom had a very nice and hot shower! Darwin was an amazing host, so friendly and welcoming! Also an amazing chef - he cooked us a great meal!
- Eva (10/5): A great time in a beautiful place with super kind hosts! - Wonderful place to stay if you want to visit the Cotopaxi National Park. Darwin is an amazing host and chef. His was definitely the best food we had in Ecuador over the course of 3.5 weeks. Darwin and his family put all their hearts into making you welcome and comfortable. We hope to come back to their place some day for a longer period of time! Nothing
- Elisabeth (10/5): Exceptional - We had an amazing stay at Ruta de los volcanes. The rooms were clean and with hot water. The location is perfect for the Cotopaxi National Park. Darwin was such a wonderful host. He helped us planning our hike in the park and even helped us with our planning for the next days in Ecuador. Even though one night we were the only guests, the fireplace was lit for us and we got the best meal we had eaten in weeks.
- Pablo (5/5): Passable -
- Jessica (9/5): Superb - The views were out of this world. The food was great. The beds were cozy with more than enough blankets to keep you warm As others mentioned, the water doesn't get hot, or even warm, so it was hard to take a shower. The big room, El mirador, was amazing but lacking one big curtain on the main window. Felt a little weird.
- Marek (8/5): Okay - Nice apartament with cool host Unfortunately shower is cold and low stream, which is terrible because location is cold, and it is not super cheap either that shower is in this condition. If you live with someone in same building is super noisy that you can hear basic talk,or even snorkling. etc.
- Moshe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nadine (9/5): Superb - Staff was super friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. As mentioned in several reviews before (and therefore expected), the showers are not the greatest.
- Molnár (9/5): Entrance to the paradise - Charming small hotel very close to the entrance of Cotopaxi National Park. The surrounding is amazing, and the whole place has a very good atmosphere. Georgeus view from rooms, lovely staff, and good food. I whish I was staying more The road is very bad from the city to the hotel, There is no heating, it would be important, take into consideration the weather conditions. Staff doesn't speak english at all, but we were to able to manage it.
- Saïd (10/5): Great place to stay and visit the volcanos! - Darwin is an excellent chef and provided the best diner we had in Ecuador! Nothing
- Dominika (10/5): Exceptional - The accommodation was beautiful. It's near the Cotopaxi National Park and area is very nice. Host Darwin was very kind and he was cooking very well. The restaurant has very good atmosphere with the fireplace. The best bonus was we met with great Ecuadorian people who were also accommodated here :). We really recommend this accommodation if you want to visit Cotopaxi volcan. In the morning the room was cold, but we knew it before from the reviews.
- Duncan (10/5): Absolutely perfect. Delicious food, welcoming host and great to support a local family. Darwin was dedicated and passion - What an amazing place! The food was absolutely amazing and a popular spot for locals on the weekend so you know it’s the best. The manager/Owner Darwin and his family ensured that every part of the stay was perfect. He helped us plan an activity each day and his father provided transportation through the park and to Cotopaxi at very reasonable prices. Darwin helped organize our hiking Guide Airiel who helped us summit Ruminahui central leaving right from the property on a less traveled route to the summit. I would highly recommend both this property and Airiel as a guide! Darwin is an amazing and passionate chef. Fireplaces made the stay quite comfortable. There was limited hot water but if you ran the water on low pressure could still have a warm shower.
- Carina (10/5): Hidden gem: excellent food, exceptional hospitality and the perfect location for visiting the volcanos - With Ruta de los volcanos we really found a hidden gem! Darwin was an excellent host and is really talented. First and foremost he is an exceptional chef and prepared the best dinner for us that we had an our entire trip in Ecuador. We expected very simple food as the place is very remote but learned that he is known for his great cuisine in the entire area! And on top of that he was so helpful with the planning for our hiking. We went on a very tough hiking trip up to the peak of Rumiñahui and Darwin showed us the route on the map with a lot of patience. For Cotopaxi he organized a guide including transport and for both days we got an excellent lunch box provided. All came at a reasonable cost. There is free drinking water which you can fill your bottles with and all requests we had were fulfilled with care and joy. We almost felt like part of the family. Our room had an excellent view and the location is really ideal for hiking or any other activity around and on the volcanos. The fire in the evening was so cozy to relax and recover from a day in the mountains.
We highly recommend Ruta de Los Volcanos and would certainly stay here again if we were back in the area!
Thank you, Darwin and family, for making us feel like home far away from our home 😊 Nothing to mention here. Even the shower had warm water despite being in such a rural area.
- Olga (10/5): tranquil and authentic - Nestled at the foot of the majestic Cotopaxi volcano, this modest rustic countryside hotel offers a tranquil and authentic experience. The friendly staff goes above and beyond to make guests feel at home, offering personalized service and delicious traditional meals made with fresh, local ingredients. With its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to nature, this hotel is the perfect retreat for those seeking a genuine and immersive experience in the heart of the Ecuadorian countryside!
- Inga (8/5): - The place is super nice and a good starting point for hiking. The people were super friendly and very welcoming, absolutely lovely! The room was very basic, the bed was small but comfy. It was extremely cold at night and there was no hot water to shower or a heat source for the night. There were enough blankets, but since we hiked into a hail storm we were wet and cold and couldn’t really warm up… warm water would be expected, even in a basic room like this.
The restaurant is an absolute gem though. We had dinner there and it was amazing! Truly just delicious and special, you can taste the love they put in the dishes.
Transport from Machachi is available, Juan picked us up and drive over the very cobbly road. Communication was not super easy, we waited for 30 minutes before he found us, even though we sent our location… but the ride was very nice.
For the next time we would probably go somewhere with warm water, but for dinner we absolutely recommend this place.
- Petar (9/5): Perfect location, ideal for early start to explore Cotopaxi - Great location to start a hike in Cotopaxi. Nearly the closest proximity to the National park. Easy to find, fast check-in and one that works till late, good breakfast and adorable staff at site that was quite helpful finding the activities we need. The bathrooms
- Dean (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff, delicious food, and great location. Cash only
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful Mountain Stay - Set in a beautiful area, and run with exception service. Loved the time I spent there. The food was amazing, hospitality was spot on! I couldn't recommend this place more! Close to the Cotopaxi entrance as well.
- Antoinette (7/5): It was comfortable, warm, nice people but wouldn’t go back - The beds & bedding were very comfortable, pretty view, the food was good with nice presentation and the staff were very friendly The shower was terrible, no pressure & not much hot water. No curtain on the large window - so the view was nice but there was absolutely no privacy. Didn’t accept debit or credit cards, so couldn’t pay via bookings, not really a $71 room
- Tomas (10/5): Exceptional - The host Darwin is super helpful and friendly, and a great chef! He took care of us in in very single detail. The place is lovely, very cozy, surrounded by nature and volcanos, and well located to the north entrance of Cotopaxi park and other natural attractions. Amazing breakfasts and dinners next to the fireplace. The hot water was not the best, but we understand that this is the normal in the area.
- Alina (10/5): Amazing room, amazing food, amazing host and amazing location. - The room was spaceous, clean and with big windows and a lovely view. The bed had many warm blankets so we were never cold in the night!
The restaurant and the host Darwin were amazing, too, every dish we had made was excellent!! And he was really eager to help, even he didn‘t speak a lot of english and we did not speak a lot of spanish :)
Truly the best value for money we‘ve encountered in a long time and would come back anytime! There is only very very limited warm water in the shower, so washing hair with hot water was not possible.
- B.m. (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location, spacious and charming room.
The diner that was cooked was excellent and the service perfect; very helpful and friendly.
- Helen (9/5): Warm hospitality in a beautiful setting - A wonderful family run place. The room was large, light and clean. So peaceful too. I was very comfortable and warm with plenty of blankets.
The restaurant food was delicious and I ate breakfast with beautiful views. The wood fire keep me cosy and warm in the evenings.
The family were so naturally friendly, warm and helpful. I felt very welcome and looked after. Especially by the kind lady who helped me get down to machachi to get my onward bus. What a lovely experience.
- Mauricio (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were so nice and the attention we received was exceptional. They took great care of us in terms of food, firewood to keep our place warm, and even helped us book a horseback riding and mountain biking tours that were very reasonably priced! This place is definitely a 10/10 gem! The shower could be warmer, but it was fine if kept at low water pressure intensity.
- Sylvain (8/5): excellente expérience - welcome from the owner
the boutique
the room
the place is réal authentique no hot water , but i guess it ia normal in this part of the country
and no electrical outlet on the second floor
- Yvonne (9/5): Superb - Darwin and his family have helped me a lot. I fell on my way to the hotel and cut my knee. The women comforted me and cleaned the wound. Afterwards Darwin brought me to the doctor and comforted me all the way. He translated everything the doctor said so I knew how to take my pills. Back at the hotel he made me a great dinner and gave me a seat at the fire place. I'm glad I stayed at Ruta de Los volcanes, they did everything they could to make my bad situation a little better. Thank you so much!
- Miroslav (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place! The room was fine (of course, you can't expect Hilton), with warm blankets and fast wifi, but more importantly. I felt really welcomed. I enjoyed every single meal, and the canelazo was superb. I highly recommend Ruta de Los Volcanos. Darwin is very helpful if you need help with a taxi or schedule anything.
