- Elise (1/5): Mold-infested cave with unaccountable host - The location was great, and the flat was quiet. It is unfortunate that I had to immediately relocate due to a mold issue. The coordination before check-in was too complex. I updated my contact every step of the journey, thinking she would meet me at the location. She ultimately just sent a lockbox code--we could have avoided the back and forth.
When I arrived, I noticed an extremely strong musty smell. The place was very dark and hot. I thought maybe it had been sitting empty for some time and I could air it out a bit, so I opened all windows and doors. I took a nap after a long day of travel and woke up with itchy eyes and a cough.
When I got up, I noticed a huge water stain on the wall that the head of the bed is against. The stained parts were covered in black mold spots. Because it is a Murphy bed, a lot of the wall was covered with the bed frame, and there was mold behind it as well. I messaged the company that rents the flat and heard nothing, so I contacted the woman who I coordinated the key pickup with. After a couple of hours, she helped me arrange a move to a new flat. Because the new place was not clean yet, I had to spend the night in the moldy flat and hardly slept. When I woke up in the morning, my eyes were swollen, and my lungs hurt. I slept with the doors wide open and with my head at the foot of the bed, as far from the mold as I could get.
The flat I moved to the next day was far from the people I was visiting, extremely noisy, and did not have a washing machine which was an important part of my first booking. There was also only one roll of toilet paper for the full stay.
I finally heard back from the company via email the next day who gaslit me and said "no moisture stain had emerged before your check in." This was clearly a lie since the wall was literally warped from water and covered in black spots. This didn't happen in an hour before my check-in.
Since leaving the second place, I have received invoices for cleaning, rent, management, VAT, at both locations. I tried to resolve this with the company directly but have not heard back.
