Guest Reviews
- randy (10/5): Lovely - The view, the people, the bar, the wood work. We did not use the beach, but it did not look like great swimming beach.
- Krzysztof (10/5): -
- Smita (9/5): Amazing cabins! - A very unique resort made of wooden duplex cabins. We paid a little extra for the a cabin on the second floor, and it was a good decision. The view of the beach and the scarlet macaws on the property were excellent from our balcony. The cabin is spacious and comes with a sitting area and an equipped kitchen which we used to cook ourselves a meal one evening. There is also furniture on the balcony to sit on and enjoy the afternoons. There is a blender, an oven, a stove, a coffee maker, a toaster, and fridge. There is also a small safe to fit documents. On the whole, very thoughtfully designed accommodations and very comfortable. The showers produced very nicely warm water for after the beach, and the pool was also warmer than in other places we stayed at. Good bathroom products as well! Breakfast was tiered ...a continental breakfast with some pastries, toast, granola and yogurt was available for free, but extras such as eggs and meat were charged. We were okay with this since we are not big breakfast eaters. Staff was lovely and kind. Came by to check on us and get us drinks one afternoon when we were sitting somewhat further away overlooking the beach. A couple of mini-supers close by (walking distance) and a pizza restaurant (just okay). A great place to relax and see and hear birds! There was something with the bedding (feathers?) that didn't work for me and gave me some allergies/sniffles. Moved to sleeping on the couch in the room and it became okay! Food options for dinner are not paritcularly varied or exciting, especially for vegetarians/vegans. Other than this everything was great.
- Brygite (4/5): -
- AlfreMarin (9/5): Romantic for a quiet scape - Breakfast was really good, All extras super affordable and great flavors,
Tried the cocktails and were really good. Dinner was above a beyond expectations. Toilet a little slow.
The bed really tall, might be a problem for some guests. Its a good desing choice thoug.
- Rania (9/5): Relaxing. - Amazing soft sandy beach, a dream for swimmers. The rooms are very spacious, clean and well maintained. The manager Juan Carlo is a gem, he went above and beyond to help us find activities. It is a quiet resort, perfect for relaxation. But lots of potential for activities around. The spa massage was surprisingly great. Breakfast really needs to be upgraded. Most items had to be paid for and even then it wasn’t good. Extra amenities in the rooms would be appreciated. Yoga classes should be offered. The resort really includes no activities except the beach.
- Stephan (8/5): Schönes Hotel an sehr ruhiger Lage.
- Christophe (10/5): -
- Jose (8/5): There is a lot potential at this beautiful property, just need to pay more attention to guests. - Facilities were excellent, location perfect, the issues we have were parking lot to small due to many people come to drink at the bar and taking all the guests’ parking spaces, also due restaurant open to public there were no privacy at the pool (restaurant’s tables place around the pool. Waiters not so friendly with guests, only with people on the bar.
- Erin (9/5): Superb -
- Cheryl (10/5): Exceptional - Love this property. Had a short stay this time but it never disappoints!
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Regan (10/5): Perfect couples getaway off the beaten path. - Quiet, clean property with excellent food and pool. It was a great value and just what we were looking for. The private cabin with kitchen was lovely and air conditioned.
There were enough things to do nearby but not so much that it was crowded or overwhelming.
The scarlet macaws are magnificent and nest on the property.
- Robert (9/5): Superb - Nice relaxed atmosphere. Great staff. Nice
location.
- Leandro (9/5): Great spot for early risers - Great staff, really accomodating and nice. Food was great, breakfast was ok. Good spot right in front of the beach and right next to a supermarket. Kitchen and apartment has everything you need. Daily cleaning was good too Big round skylight in the middle of the ceiling flooded the room with sunlight disrupting sleep. Same thing with critters on the roof which were really loud. We were told laundry was free and included with our stay just to be charged at the end which was confusing.
- Jane (10/5): We had a very relaxing & fun time! - It’s very beautiful-rooms are gorgeous. Very quiet place and the food was delicious! The staff were very friendly & provided help with anything you requested.
- Jamie (8/5): Very good place to relax and chill out - Pleasant, all wood, large cabins around a very nice pool. Across the road from the beach. Food was really good for the price. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Very close to a very small village with a bar and a few good restaurants. We found out at checkout that only the cereal, fruit and bread on the buffet were included for breakfast. All other items cost.
- Rico (9/5): Amazing place to relaxe and calm down! - That hotel is amazing! It combines luxury and nature in a small village! We had a great stay here. Almost everything was perfect to relaxe on our last days of our Costa Rica vacation. The rooms, the pool area, the bar/restaurant (simple but cheap), the location, cleaning service: all was perfect. Even this place already operates on a very high level I want to point out that the place has even more potential. We recognized that it seems like the place is not administrated in the best way. The staff is very supportive but it seems they are not well trained and don’t have clear tasks. Everybody is doing everything which results in confusion in booking tours which get cancelled on the last second. Here is some space for improvement.
- Vaidotas (8/5): Very good -
- Glenys (3/5): Great staff but Accessibility issues and lack of beach amenities significantly reduced our enjoyment. Definitely not wor - Lovely outdoor eating area, well-kept grounds. The staff were attentive and very kindly helped with a health issue. Not suitable for people with even minor mobility issues. The cabins have so many levels, misstepped 2 times and lost balance, nearly fell. The bed was too high to get on without a stool. The stool was not sturdy. Inside cabins were very dark, despite many windows. Unable to control fan speed. Floors need maintenance., bouncy with cracks that pinch feet. The pool stairs are not designed for accessibility so pool entry was difficult and dangerous. Too many bright lights on outside the cabin overnight…yet closing all the blinds would not permit “view of sunrise from every bed” as advertised. This so-called beach resort had no beach furniture, umbrellas, tents, mats or water diversions. Even cheap plastic chairs would have been nice. Some older people cannot sit on the ground and get up again easily. Very basic menu. Homemade bread was very hard and crunchy. Broke a tooth. No softer bread available.
- Jonathan (10/5): Excellent suites, stunning location and wonderful place to stay. - The suites are stunning with wonderful character. The layout works very well to provide seclusion and inclusion at the same time. The suites really do provide true beach views especially to enjoy sunrise. The restaurant is good and very fairly priced. There isn’t really anything to criticise - if I am searching for a dislike it would be minor that there wasn’t a kettle in the kitchen (there was a good coffee machine).
- Chris (10/5): Beautiful resort, lots of activities and attentive staff. One of the best locations we stayed at in Costa Rica. - The reality is more impressive than the photos with well appointed rooms made out of beautiful local wood. Five two story buildings around the pool and bar with the pacific as a backdrop gives a really exclusive feel, and you have scarlet macaws flying over!! The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and with well priced drinks and food we were very happy spending evenings by the pool
We loved it. Nothing
- C.r. (9/5): Most beautiful and spacious room we had in CR. - What a beautiful room with the hardwood floors and ceiling and a lot of room to spread out - the biggest room we had in Costa Rica and we stayed at 5 different locations. Having kitchen facilities was really handy and loved having a deck to sit out and have a beverage. Share a steak at the bar down the road, the fridge came in handy when we brought half of it home. The pool was great. Nice to have a warm pool even with it hot outside so you could stay in the water longer. We saw the macaws every day in the trees by the hotel which was really cool. We think a room on the upper floor would give you even better views and more privacy. This isn't really what we didn't like but more what we missed and didn't even think to ask if there was one in the room was a TV. I know, we're in Costa Rica, never realized how much we leave a TV on for background noise. We had a beverage and listened to the waves and finished our reading. Our room was close to the bar and diners were sitting close to the bottom of our deck so we'll pick an upper floor the next time we visit.
- Mark (10/5): Truly exceptional beachfront hotel - Clean spacious room. Beautiful grounds. Delicious and affordable restaurant/bar.
- Peter (10/5): This was our favourite spot during our 2 week vacation. - Breakfast was perfect...variety for both our tastes. The grounds and beach were amazing. Bonus were the trails connected to the property. The buildings, and history were way beyond what we expected. (They exceeded the pictures on-line) The beach was quiet and very relaxing. We really enjoyed venturing about a block to the "town" and experiencing the happy atmosphere of this gathering place. A couple of great restaurants and grocery store. The food at the resort was great as well. Can't think of anything...just wish we could have stayed a bit longer.
- Penny (10/5): A truly wonderful week in paradise! - Breakfast was great. Location was fantastic. Pool and gardens were beautiful and well maintained. Rooms were stunning. So good we will return next year! All perfect
- Carolyn (10/5): Pura Vida in every way - Great location on the Bay ofTambor, loads of wildlife and stunning Macaws The bed
- Ilicia (8/5): Creature comforts in Tambor. - The manager was very responsive when I had issues with the room we were assigned. The first room we got was not at all what I expected.
- Jim (10/5): Would do it all over again and will recommend to friends and family - The property was absolutely gorgeous and had an excellent restaurant and tours that we booked. The staff was very friendly and the place was immaculate. We were able to help release newly hatched sea turtles into the ocean which was a one of a kind experience. Loved everything about it.
- Laura (10/5): This is one place we will DEFINITELY come back to! - Amazing place at the end of the road. So quiet and relaxing especially off season. I think we were one of two couples in the place! The pool was open 24/7 and warm. The rooms were huge and so comfy, with a view of the beach and sunrise at your feet (from the bed), great A/C, full kitchen, large bathroom and good wifi. the wrap around covered terrace with lots of chairs was so nice. I still can’t get over how the whole thing is made of wood! It felt like a treehouse, as in…actually inside a tree! the continental breakfast was more than enough food, with options to add more for $. The papagallos and howling monkeys were our morning wake-up alarms, what a treat! The beach is not private, but it might as well have been. It is not gorgeous, but it is large, and there are plenty of places to find for yourselves. Compared to the huge resort a few kms up the beach, we felt blessed to be in such a peaceful hotel, with no kids, and sounds of nature instead of music and people. We didn’t try the restaurant, but we enjoyed the poolside tiki bar. You need a car here, if you want to try other places to eat, besides the local local’s restaurant. There is not much to improve on. Yes the place is a few decades old, but very well maintained. The receptionist was not very knowledgeable (couldn’t tell us when breakfast service ended the next day), but all the staff were very helpful and relaxed.
- Cheryl (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (9/5): great place to relax and use for our home base to tour around the peninsula. - beautiful facility and location and great staff
- Mike (8/5): Good stay in the middle of nature - Beautiful welcoming facility, located in the middle of nature, parrots in the garden, spacious room and clean, very comfy bed. They offer activities like Curu Nationalpark or Tortuga island. During a rainy night water got through the ceiling into the room. Included breakfast just basic
Location is remote, just a few restaurants nearby.
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Erin (10/5): Little slice of teak heaven! - I love staying at Tambor Tropical. This is my 4th stay. It is oceanfront, very quiet and calm unlike Santa Teresa. You are still near enough to Montezuma and Santa teresa to visit for the day or for a nice meal but staying at TT is like a little slice of paradise. There are not a lot of restaurants in the general vicinity and there are prettier beaches in the area but it's still an incredible place to stay.
- Joe (8/5): great - location the pool was not very deep
- Jullieet (10/5): Relaxing and wonderful. - Beautifully crafted property with attention to detail in providing comfort. Many conveniences are also offered (tour operators on site/laundry service/etc) right on site. Very reasonable resort bar/restaurant prices. All rooms are designed to meet the sunrise in the morning from your bed. Ocean view. Gorgeous.
- Lazy (10/5): Peace and Tranquillity - A wonderful time and relaxing atmosphere, 4 days of chilled out bliss. Enjoying glorious sunrises on the beach or if you're lucky 😉 from your bed. Magnificent, a beautiful way to end our extended trip to multiple very locations across Costa Rica, then enjoying the short hop from Tambor Airport to San Jose an experience in itself.I think the cleaning staff and management work hard to ensure a glorious and memorable stay for all guests Breakfast options could be more inclusive rather than paid extras. Maybe that's me being picky. Food standards could be slightly better and varied, I understand that North Americans don't necessarily like to be without a car, Which was reflective in the way that some of the guests entered and left the premises, at times with the sense of urgency of still being at home. Tambor is such a beautiful bay. It really does lend itself to let your feet do the walking and your mouth less talking, anyway, only A Free Spirited Englishman's view x
- Cheryl (10/5): Couldn’t have loved it more. Stayed in 3 different rooms because I kept adding days to my stay. - Perfect location. Quiet but near airport and easy to all area from here. Everything was fabulous.
- Anne (10/5): Beautiful and peaceful hotel with access to a beach with warm sea with gentle waves - Beautiful and spacious accommodation with the most comfortable bed. The hotel is so close to the beach and provided easy access for swimming and canoeing. We were also able to see a baby turtle released to the sea. Loud music played nearby until late over the New Year weekend.
- Angela (10/5): loved our stay here and the staff are excellent - location, food, facilities, staff room quite dark
- Dima (10/5): exceptional - The views, the place, the rooms are big with a lounge and kitchen, but above all the staff were exceptional, they went above and beyond to make our stay very special, a shout out to Juan the manger, and Karyn.
- Sean (10/5): Pura Vida - for sure!! - ABSOLUTELY SPECTACTULAR! Stayed 8 nights. Arrived late/late at night, Joe (Security) got us all setup quickly in our room/hut. Only 12 units (very spacious), all are great (we did 2nd floor units - awesome). Owner (Mark), Manager (Juan Carlos), Admin (Karyn), and staff - Zander, Andrea, Emily, Josalina, Brandon (and others - kitchen/cooks, cleaning team, maintenance team) - all amazing, so helpful, great service, so very kind and friendly (all of them greet you with a smile every day, and help teach you some Spanish...if you'd like).
Beach or pool - all pretty much to yourself for the most part. Facility is so amazing, very clean. Birds, lizards and the local macaws remind you who was there first - sounds you look forward to hearing each day. Ocean views are amazing. Walks on the beach in either direction, or just be lazy on the beach or the pool side. Prices at restaurant / bar are very inexpensive. Great restaurants nearby in the Tambor village, or just go to the local grocery store and cook in your suite, or stock up on stuff to keep in your little fridge - so many options. Or just hang at the facility's bar / restaurant, and maybe meet some great locals and/or expats that frequent the area...or just have a drink on your hut's patio!
Rent a car - drive to nearby beach villages (be careful, drive in the daylight, go slow on rough roads) - go to Montezuma (see Montezuma Falls, Butterfly Brewery), Carmen Beach and Santa Theresa Beach - villages, with fantastic beaches (sand and rocks; different than Tambor bay beach), and fantastic restaurants and shops. Or - see Javier (PuraVidaExcursions, on site) to setup reservations for day activities (fishing, snorkeling, Tortuga Isle, kayak/board rentals, ATV tours, etc...) - all great and fair pricing.
Amazing. We'll be back for sure. That we only had 8 days here...
- Spencer (10/5): Exceptional - We really liked that the buildings and property blended in with the environment. Our room
had amazing views of the bay and it was just a few steps to the beach.
- Alyson (8/5): Very good -
