- Alicia (3/5): I do not recommend this flat - Location is excellent, within easy reach of pedestrian street El Conde which leads to shopping at El Nacional and further on to the atmospheric Parque Colon. Location gives you the best chance of experiencing the Zona Colonial’s unique village feel. Carolina, the acting host employed by the rather unconcerned owner, will do her best to help and is a kind, reliable person. She’ll make sure your bed clothing and towels are replaced weekly by a kind gentleman who is also very nice. The place is dark, claustrophobic and ill equipped. Windows give onto an entrance hallway, meaning you are left with no privacy and the feeling of inhabiting a cell. You have to use electric lights even when the sun is shining outside. There are frequent power cuts, and the Wi-Fi may occasionally go off due to phone company work. The signal in the flat is poor, meaning that even if you are using your phone data roaming you must go onto the street to make calls. While power cuts and Wi-Fi reception problems are beyond the control of the owner, you should be aware that the flat will not shield you from potential harm when that happens. The kitchen space is quite basic and uninviting if you like to cook. Water from the sink is cold. The shower is a drippy business, and the water gets lukewarm at best. While I stayed there, there was a noisy neighbour who speaks incredibly loud in the early hours of the morning and has frequent violent arguments with a woman who comes to visit or accost him. It gets violent, and it feels as if it were happening in your own space.
