- Guest (6/5): - Man who did check in was great. Cleaning lady was great. Power went out. They couldn’t open the gate so I could leave. Was stuck for almost 2 hours until they break the chain so I could get my car out.
- Guest (1/5): -
- Cato (8/5): -
- Lakshmikanthan (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (5/5): Not recommended - Close to town within walking distance 15 minutes to central market
Breakfast was good: rice and beans, scrambled eggs, tortillas, fresh fruit and orange juice. Sketchy neighborhood at night. Street walkers and casino clientele from across the street.
- Valentina (8/5): Cozy stay and helpful staff both in hotel and restaurant facility - Staff and cleaning Could be a bit renovate and isolated from noise on the street
- Siavash (4/5): They charge extra for guests, old beat up rooms - This place charges you an additional fee if you want to have a guest over. And I don’t mean overnight. Given its location I’m sure anyone booking this place will need to have a guest over. I would be OK with this if the price of the hotel was low for what it is, but this place is already charging a premium because of its location and proximity to you know what. The rooms are very old and dated and the equivalent of a one star hotel. So if I’m paying 100 bucks a night for an old beat up room for the purpose of having guest over, I shouldn’t have to pay extra for it.
- Alex (8/5): Very good -
- Barbara (5/5): Poor - Location Facilities were basic and looked very tired. Both bedrooms that we booked had no external window and looked nothing like the images on line
- Josephine (10/5): Great place to stay in San José - Great location. The building is an old coffee planters home in an good neighborhood called Barrio Amon. Loved the breakfast Nothing in particular. Since is an old building, it doesn't have lifts. But they help with carrying baggage up
- Jayne (3/5): Poor - Location good for downtown San Jose, room was basic but the noise was bad, cleaners gathered outside in morning talking and buckets clattered. Noise in evening, a bad room experience, thank goodness only stayed one two nights. Noise .
- Doug (9/5): Superb -
- Tom (7/5): Good -
- Eliana (9/5): Good choice for short stay in San Josè - Well located, walking distance to main tourist places of interest. Very clean. Adequate breakfast (choice of traditional and continental). Friendly staff. Special mention for Señor Luis who went above and beyond to make my stay a good experience.
Be mindful some rooms are facing the inside of the hotel and some do not have windows at all.
- Lucy (7/5): Basic with good location - Good location and large room The room was charmless with just one horrid painting
- Mark (4/5): Disappointing -
- Anne (10/5): A Gem of a Hotel in Downtown San Jose - Biggest shoutout to the staff of this hotel, especially Fabian at the front desk who went above and beyond corresponding with me during the reservation process, and upon our arrival. He even provided a breakfast for us on the day we took a 6am bus tour. Hotel is unique and charming and was perfect for our 2 nights’ stay. Appreciated the very early am coffee ! Would recommend better wine selection at the hotel restaurant.
- Ekaterini (8/5): Very good - The staff at the front desk!!!! Fabian went beyond the call of duty to accommodate us and answered all our questions( printed maps, guided us to restaurants and many more). We are grateful for his kindness!!!
The location is perfect for exploring the heart of San Jose.
- Rosemary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (8/5): I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants an experience that does NOT feel like they are in a „Holiday Inn in An - The building had charm and character and was in a dynamic neighborhood. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fruit, eggs, and either a) rice with beans, plantains and tortilla or b) bacon and toast. It was freshly made to order. There was also cold cereal, coffee and fresh orange juice that were self serve.
It was very easy to walk into the cultural district to the Theater, the Jade Museum, the Gold Museum, the Central Market, etc.
There is a great restaurant restaurant , Silvestre across the street and a wonderful speakeasy feeling bar underneath for drinks and delicious tapas style foods.
A brewpub with good beer (if their German Pilsner is on, get it!) pizza, and tacos is not far. Ask for a quiet room. There is a loud, bright casino across the street. Our room faced it. Surprisingly, Monday night was much louder there than Saturday night! There was also a gentleman (He seemed to be a fellow guest) who smoked cigars below our window every day.
I didn’t think to put the Please Make Up Room sign on the door the first morning, so that in addition to not getting fresh towels (towels don’t dry quickly in the humid clime) our waste basket didn’t get emptied. When you deposit your used toilet paper instead of flushing, the basket can take on a diaper pail aroma.
- Brayand (7/5): Good -
- Dave (9/5): Superb -
- Lisa (10/5): Colonial retreat - This a lovely hotel. The staff are very helpful the breakfasts are delicious and the beds are comfortable. It's a 5 minute walk from the centre. It's a lovely old building with some original features intact. The barman asking me out.
- Juan (7/5): Good -
- Paul (3/5): Not the best - It is an interesting old building and staff were friendly. Secure parking is a very short walk just around the corner No lifts so we had to haul suitcases up stairs. Nobody was available to help. The area is quite run down. There was some noise from the Casino across the road even tho we had the quiet room. The breakfast was poor arriving a minute after ordered so obviously sitting in pans rather than being freshly cooked neither of us could eat it. While the room was large the shower pressure was so low it was difficult to use.
- Kaisu (9/5): Unique and cozy for our one night in San Jose - The hotel was nicely created inside out with old photos and stories to colorful artistic touches. The room was clean and had everything necessary, a little humid as in many places in Costa Rica but we also had a dehumidifier for the first time in room which was a nice touch. The personnel were exceptionally nice and helpful. Definitely worth for money! We did not know in advance the area itself at night was not the safest, and we were recommended to move by uber. The hotel has 24h reception and security
- Chunyee (8/5): Very good -
- Rebecca (8/5): Great value for money, recommended. - The hotel staff were very welcoming. The rooms are a good size and comfortable. Breakfast was also very good. The water pressure for the shower was a little low.
- Janika (9/5): Convenient stay in San Jose - Great service. The staff is very friendly and gave us lots of recommendations. Breakfast was good. The room was very clean, and the hotel was quiet so we were able to sleep after a long travel. We arrived quite late so it was nice to have a restaurant in the hotel, so no need to search food anywhere else at night. Bed was not the most confortable.

- Warren (9/5): Superb -
- Warren (8/5): Very good -
- Christopher (3/5): Cute property, poor location & impossible to sleep because of the noise from the neighboring Casino - The staff were friendly and the downstairs area was attractive The room was very basic and not what I had booked and bore no resemblance to the photographs on-line. Sleep was impossible because it was on the street side next to a casino nightclub which belted out bass thumping music until 1.45 in the morning with people shouting and screaming and revving motorbikes. I checked out without staying for the 2nd night I had booked. The hotel refused to refund my booking. Cannot recommend this property to anybody wanting a good night's sleep
- Rosemary (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff. Restaurant / cafe. Good breakfast The toilet was blocked most of the time.
- Lesa (9/5): Nice Inn - Good location. The restaurant was handy for dinner and the breakfast was very good. All the staff were great. Held my luggage after checkout. For me room 7 was on an intersection. Trucks coming were really loud gearing down.
- Rebecca (6/5): Overall fine - Good central location and that they had a private parking The beds were a little stiff and the window was thin so it wasn’t very quiet at night since it’s in front of a casino
- Sohrab (8/5): Very good - Local and homely feel
- Charles (1/5): What is the opposite of Pura Vita? That would be this place. - Nothing good about this hotel. Even if one wanted to stay in this area to party, there are much better options for a better price. The only good thing about this hotel is that they offered the use of a secured parking lot. This must be the worst hotel within the entire country. When I stayed at this hotel 10 years ago, the rooms were nice, the food was good and it was quiet. We booked the two most expensive suites available for the recent trip. The street noise from the party literally outside our window was non-stop until 4:00am. The food in the hotel was horrible and over priced. At 1:00am, we asked for a more quiet rooms, the front desk clerk was not helpful and unapologetic. Avoid this hotel at all cost.
- Jeffrey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jeffrey (9/5): Superb -
- Romina (8/5): Very good -
- Michal (8/5): Very good - Very nice hotel in an old building. One of the most attractive neighbourhoods in San Jose. Staff were very nice and helpful. Parking for a car was a plus. Breakfast was good. It was little bit loud during sunday night. Neighbours don't really care and music was playing most of the night. I said it's in one of the nicest neighbourhoods and I still think that but it's still pretty sketchy - that's just the way it is, in my opinion
- Emma (8/5): Comfortable, friendly, clean one night stay - Our stay was very nice and clean, the staff are very helpful and friendly. The rooms are comfortable and a good size with clear care taken into preparing them for customers. They provided cereal and hot drinks for breakfast an hour (I think) before their main breakfast, which was excellent for us as we were getting a very early shuttle bus. They also have lovely paintings by local artists for sale downstairs!
- Emma (8/5): Clean and comfortable one night stay - This was our second 1-night stay during our trip to Costa Rica. As with our first night, our second went perfectly. The room was a perfect size, clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was hot and good.
- Robbie (10/5): Awesome - I love being downtown in San Jose where my favorite shopping places are within walking distance , I like the location and it was very comfortable . The restaurant hours were limited ( but the food was fabulous) but with delivery so easy and fast near downtown it wasn’t a big deal.
- Donna (10/5): The staff were very professional and friendly. And so nice to have breakfast included. Thankyou! - I loved the character
- Daniel (10/5): Call Beti, friendly, staff and manager - Very unique hotel Quiet and safe good rooms very comfortable
- Lamount (7/5): Good - The guest fee.
- Carlota (1/5): Awful experience - Nothing. The area of the hotel was awful. Didn’t look safe at all. Clearly a prostitution area.
The beds and pillows were awful. Incredible noise from the other rooms. We couldn’t sleep at all.
Rooms are much older than what they look like in the pictures
- Shreeya (8/5): overall great value - Location is great. Good breakfast. It’s a beautifully converted colonial home. The room we stayed in was a bit small. But we were only there for 2 nights and we could make it work
- Lakshmikanthan (10/5): Exceptional - Location. The ambiance of the restaurant and the bar
- Lakshmikanthan (10/5): Exceptional - Location. Ambience of the bar and restaurant
- Paolo (9/5): Superb - We had the stunning Bri-Bri room suite, number 2, which was huge with wood throughout, which gave it the feel of a 19th century inn, together with a bar. Staff were very friendly and helpful with great restaurant recommendations. The bed was super king so gave us loads of room. Bathroom had two sinks. It's a quick 10 minutes walk from Central Avenue where you can find the tourist centre. There's a casino opposite which can get noisy especially with queues of car traffic overnight. However, our bathroom provided a buffer and the hum of the air conditioning took care of the rest.
- Maria (10/5): Great value. Beautiful historic building. Good service. Very clean. Great location. - Historic beauty. Comfortable beds. Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Food service. Not enough options.
- Constantine (10/5): Dunn Inn is great - The facility is old and elegant with just enough funkiness to make it fun. The staff were wonderful, the rooms clean and large, and the location central Nothing!
- Diana (8/5): Enjoyable stay! Thank you for everything! - Walkable to downtown, very clean and well maintained property, very nice breakfast, helpful staff, nice restaurant and bar adjacent to hotel if you don’t want to wander far. Not much in the immediate vicinity, if you’re looking for nightlife, but everything is a quick taxi ride away.
- Annette (7/5): Does the job - The room was massive and there was a fridge and air conditioning. Really sketchy area and casino across the street. I didn’t mind so much as I was flying out the next day but would not recommend more than one night there.
- Michelle (8/5): Very good - Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Dunn Inn. We especially appreciated the friendliness and the professionalism of the staff. The complementary breakfast was also tasty. The rooms are simple, but clean and provided everything we needed for our stay.
- Caitlin (6/5): Perfect hotel for night before traveling to Caribbean side! - It is a short walk to the Caribbean bus station and right in downtown San Jose to walk around after arriving. It has a cafe and restaurant attached to the hotel. The room had lots of bugs in it and they flew around in room all night and their wings shed over everything, it just made sleeping difficult.
- Deandra (8/5): Great location, friendly staff, beautiful building, but not so quiet environment. - The location of the hotel was great. It was close enough to walk to the city center and other nearby attractions. The interior of the hotel is also very beautiful. Unfortunately, the rooms are not soundproof. There was a lot of noise that come in from both outside and inside the hotel making it really hard to fall asleep at night.
- Madhav (9/5): Superb - Well maintained hotel in old city. If you don’t mind staying close to casino, this is excellent place. Breakfast was great. Staff was excellent.
- Jordi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Diana (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ian (7/5): Great location easy walking distance to the centre of San Jose - The location was great. We enjoyed the breakfast in the restaurant and found the coffee to be decent. The bar of an evening was a nice place, though a little pricey for San Jose. The atmosphere was excellent and it was lovely to stay in a historic hotel. It was extremely noisy outside into the early hours which did impact our ability to sleep given the thin windows.
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good - Building was a beautiful combination of historic and new. Great location. Our room was very small.
- Jose (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (8/5): Lovely characterful hotel - Lovely old building with lots of character, if slightly faded grandeur. Spotlessly clean. Friendly and helpful reception team. Huge and very comfortable bed with good bedding.and pillows. Good bathroom with his and hers basins. Fresh water in the room every day. Efficient aircon and fan kept us cool. Breakfast was slightly lacking in choice, but the Gallo Pinto (traditional rice and beans) was very tasty and the large plate of fresh fruit very welcome.. Attractive new restaurant and bar at the back of the hotel. Good location within easy reach of Central Avenue for the museums and National Theatre. Noise from the street outside late at night with cars and people gathering until the small hours. Ask for a room at the back.
- Cezar (8/5): Good. - It looks like a museum, it is very stylish. There are only two options for breakfast, they could improve this, but it is delicious anyway. The bathroom is quite small and washing is uncomfortable.
- Simon (8/5): Very good -
- Matthaios (6/5): Relevantly cheap accommodation close to San Jose city center. - The neighborhood seems to be a cool, up and coming place. It is located walking distance to the center of the city. The room did not have a window, it was small and gloomy.
- Joseph (7/5): Good - Handy central location, staff were super friendly and even jumped in with English when I struggled to keep up with Spanish. I felt really welcomed at both check in and check out. The noise at night. I’m pretty used to sleeping in noisy environments but the noise of the casino and street below was unbelievable. Don’t underestimate the reviews like I did. The room felt tired (but clean) and not really representative with what I thought I was buying.
- Melissa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roberta (7/5): Downtown San Jose appears to be a depressed area with broken sidewalks everywhere and corrugated metal on doors, or wir - Charming old mansion. Very
Helpful and friendly staff. Free breakfast included. Room dark with inadequate reading light. No air conditioning, but a ceiling fan.
- Jerry (10/5): Enjoyed, will stay again - Great
- James (10/5): Exceptional - Wish they had an elevator
- Jan (8/5): A good option in San Jose - We stayed in Dunn Inn for just one night following a late arrival into San Jose and before travelling to La Fortuna at lunchtime the next day. It was just what we needed.
It’s a clean and charming hotel with friendly and helpful staff, who assisted us in booking a private transfer to La Fortuna at late notice.
In terms of location it’s around a 10 minute walk to the centre of San Jose; and we found navigating easy due to the grid system. To note, the walk does involve a fairly steep hill so may not be doable for all travellers.
- José (6/5): Pleasant -
- Oliver (9/5): Superb -
- Felipe (7/5): Good -
- Michele (2/5): A Cluedo experience: Night with homicide. - Fabian is so friendly and kind; he's the only person in the hotel who's helpful and makes us feel welcome. The hotel is a very nicely renovated old house, and it is located within walking distance from the city center. The breakfast is NOT what is described on the website. You need to literally ask for anything. The waitress barely talks and does not explain anything. Every morning we saw other people looking at each other's tables to see what others were having for breakfast, as no one received the same. We asked for some juice (as it came with the breakfast, it was not extra) and the waitress answered that she did not know we wanted it (of course, because she did not explain anything). In the hotel, there is a restaurant, very pricy and we had a STOMACH INFECTION AND DIARREAH after eating there (PLEASE AVOID). If you buy a bottle of water, they charge you a SERVICE FEE. We had to wait until midday for the room to be cleaned, the air conditioner did not work at all, the hot water in the shower worked for 5min, so we had to have cold showers every time. One of the nights, there was a homicide outside our bedroom window (we heard even the gunshots in the middle of the night), and we were told that it was becoming a not-so-safe area. - Elizabeth (8/5): Welcoming, good location, clean and comfortable. - Friendly staff, good location for shopping and restaurants. Spotlessly Clean rooms with comfortable beds. The breakfast order was misunderstood probably due to language challenges.
- Pamela (8/5): Very good - Cute little place with charm. Breakfast was such a nice surprise with a traditional Costa Rican meal😍
- Jason (8/5): Very good - Staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough for you.
- Ali (5/5): Passable - Standard rooms are the size of a large closet. Expensive for the a basic stay.
