Denise (1/5): - The room was booked to another person as well. When I arrived there a guy already inside the room. It was offered an "upgrade" .The place was awfully dirty, the heat didn't work and the location was inconvenient. When I said it was unacceptable and asked for refund, the owner was not receptive. Booking.com was great and solved the problem.

Don (1/5): Worst B&B ever - Very little. Beds were hard box springs not mattresses or older than my grandparents... advertisement was extremely misleading. No secure rooms as promised. A BS excuse was provided, but not possible to be true due to physical evidence. Signs all over like a grade school dormitory. No private washroom as advertised. No private fridge as advertised. We left 20 minutes after we arrived as we could not sleep on the "beds". No discount offered when requested.

I am little extrovert person and felt like no one even dont want to bother speak a word other than Mandarin language at you even if sharing kitchen for cooking. It is little uncomfortable.

Stephen (6/5): This worked as a one night stay in Kitsilano to help out a family member but we won't return. - Location was great for our needs, room was quiet, access was easy. The room had many ants on the floor and walls during the daytime. This may be a seasonal issue. Also, the private bathroom was outside the bedroom door and next to the laundry facilities so when we arrived back after dinner, someone was accessing the washer dryer as we were trying to go in and out of the shower next door -- it just felt uncomfortable.

Scott (1/5): This room was falsely advertised as having a private bathroom. This was a lie. The toilet and shower - This room was falsely advertised as having a private bathroom. This was a lie. The toilet and shower for this room could be accessed by anybody in the building and was in a common area. A tenant of another room had used the bathroom during my stay. I booked this room under the impression that I would have my own private bathroom. There were also privacy issues within the room, as the blinds were broken allowing light into the room and visibility from anybody outside or in the outside suite. I am very disappointed and unhappy with this. False advertisement is illegal, I did not receive the experience I expected when I paid for this suite. Pictures can be provided for confirmation.

Gretchen (9/5): Austere, quiet, and nice - In a beautiful, quiet neighborhood very close to a lovely park with lots of trails and the very delicious Rice Burger a few blocks away. Our room was entirely our own space, with a keypad lock, and the kitchen was spacious, with two tables to gather at. The living room was very sparse (as well as the walls) and the entryway could use a shoe rack (the one in the closet was already full). We needed the compost bin beneath the sign for it- it wasn't there!- and the fridge and freezer could be more organized for guests' use.

Dave (3/5): Not as advertised...not secure. - It's a place to sleep if you're only staying one night. The bed is not a King size, my partner and I were not expecting nor did the site say Queen size bed. VERY misleading. (Polite way of saying they lied.) The biggest problem was the shared bathroom. The door to the adjacent room didn't lock or even close properly. After trying to find something to fix the door we did get it to lock only to have the adjacent guests knock on the door constantly. Do yourself a favor, pay a little more for a secure room with an actual King size bed. I would not recommend staying here at all.

Melany (2/5): Cleaned issues - Room was not what I booked, or cleaned properly. Mirror was dirty as was the sink and taps. Shower stall was filthy. Someones bra, and night cap left in the drawers alo g with hair. Contact the owner and she "upgraded" me to another room. Same issue with the mirrors and bathroom. Bed was comfortable. Only bottom plugs worked in 3 of the plug-ins. The owner said she would speak with her cleaning staff and make sure the suggestions for a cleaners would be passed along.

La Fortune (5/5): Not going there again - The bed was comfortable. The location was nice and close to the thunderbird stadium. I was safe and in a quiet neighborhood. The people seemed nice. The other guests left terrible messes in the kitchen and bathroom. I couldn't relax and there was little comfort. While I don't mind taking my shoes off, the piles of used slippers for guests are quite daunting. Bring your own. There are no TVs. Bring your own travel kit with your own coffee and food kit. Pack soap etc. I needed a private room or I would have stayed at a hostel for far less. I paid $300 !!!! For 2 nights! I know $150 per night is a good price for the area and I thought I would treat myself to a nice relaxing guest house. Jericho Beach hostel was half the price and I feel ripped off. At least the concert was great...

Barbara (3/5): - Big room, comfortable beds, quiet area, convinient location. Dark entrance: we arrived after 7pm, house was absolutely dark, so we can't see the house number or lock pad. We entered the dark hallway and had a hard time finding a light switch. In our room, first, what we found was an empty tissue box on a nightstand. Spiderwebs on a ceiling and alive spider right between the door and nightstand - hard not to notice web in this spot. Under the bed water bottle and dust. Terrible mold in shower. Very low quality towels. On Friday night, the kitchen was stinking of old garbage with rotten food. On a countertop were lying groceries along with a partially opened package of raw chicken breast (it was staying like that few hours and was there after 11pm so guessing somebody cleaned it just at the morning next day) In a fridge was bearly room to put our little package of breakfast food. This house definitely must pay more attention to cleaning and hygiene. We found this neglections very upsetting and showing a lack of respect for guests who pay not a little money for this place.

Katie (9/5): - We arrived late and had to leave early. It was perfect for what we needed with clear instructions on how to get in. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed.
Zoe (5/5): - The beds were comfy and bed sheets felt clean. Washing machine and drier and a hairdryer was a great bonus! Check in was very difficult and took over an hour because we didn't receive the access code and couldn't get ahold of the host, then once inside instructions were unclear because different wording was used on the indoor maps vs online booking. The room stated it came with a bathtub but it didn't. The shower room felt unclean with lots of product residue and hair in the bottom and there were cobwebs and spiders on the walls and in the corners of both the bedroom and the shower room, plus the blinds were slimey to the touch with dirt. As a basement room there's only so much you can do about spiders, but cobwebs everywhere on the walls and corners is an easy enough fix with proper care and cleaning. Some of the towels also smelt of aftershave. What we paid included a $50 cleaning fee, so all of this was disappointing and frustrating. Someone (who we assume was the host?) came into our space at 10:30 when check out was at 11, claiming to have "made us aware" when I hadn't received a text, call, email, or message on booking.com, and hovered until we left, which was pretty uncomfortable. All round a very basic stay but didn't meet some minimum expectations.

Roberto (1/5): - The location is good, free parking places We regret to say that the room we stayed in is the worst we have had during all our trip through Canada (twenty days through motels, hotels, apartments) It wasn't mentioned anywhere that it is a basament. The "terrace" can not be used because the window can't be open (it's really blocked...). And, by the way, outside was pretty dirty. The room itself was dirty as well, with no fornitures eccept for three night tables that were full of rubbish: we found a bra, a broken puppet and it seemed that they have not been cleaned for a long time. The bathroom is very very small (less than one square meter) and is shared and not private as stated in the description of the room: it's outside the room, in a shared space, near the washing machine. The washing machine is very near to the room, so that it is not comfortable (not to say impossible) to stay in the room while the washing is in use. We will never come back.

Sonya (1/5): Horrible Hostel - do not stay here - Nothing, this was awful and we moved out after the first night. This is a HOSTEL! This is not a B&B or anything but a bare bones depressing hostel. If you are over 25 do not stay here. It was really awful. There were sheets and pillowcases hanging all over the entry, all the furniture was covered in plastic or towels, the downstairs bathroom was disgusting and they were using a band-aid, yes, a band-aid to hold the front door lock back. We moved out the first night and I tried to cancel our second night but the booking.com system kept erroring out and the host doesn't speak English. Really bad.
Liliana (8/5): Comfortable - I liked the location, the house, the room and the bed very comfortable, the bathroom is shared only with another room not with the whole house, there was always space to park. I did not like that between one room and another there was no security, there could be a security chain on the door for when you leave the bathroom, there was neither air conditioning, nor conditioner made much heat.
Kristy (5/5): Nice location but would not stay there again. - The location was quiet and safe. The bathroom was dirty, cobwebs everywhere, very loud in the basement bedroom and awful mildew smell. Beds were rock hard. Our room was entered when we were gone throughout the day without notice and for no apparent reason.

Laurel (4/5): A beautiful home, but chemical smell, pokey bathroom, dust under bed made it very unpleasant. - - excellent location (close to UBC, the hospital, bike trails, eateries. Quiet neighborhood. Lovely backyard. The kitchen was bright and airy, looking out over the backyard. - upon entering, there was a powerful smell of antiseptic and chemical cleaning ages, and it also smelled very musty. The deluxe room we were in was in the basement. The mould and chemical smell was worse in the basement. - There was a patio door and a smaller window, but we could not open the patio door to allow for fresh air to flow. We call the number that was on the confirmation email, but we were not able to get through thus the patio door remained closed - The landing outside the patio door and the steps have not been swept and full of dried leaves. (See photo) - even the bedding and towels smell of strong chemicals, thus it was difficult to sleep. - there was a lot of dust under the beds (see photo) - the bathroom was pokey, and the shower stall was very small. You couldn’t even turn around or bend down to wash your feet without touching the side of the shower and we are thin, normal sized people. (See photo) - the door in our room did not lock from the inside. This was a safety issue at night when we were in the room. - It was odd to come into a beautiful home and see towels draped on the stairwell bannisters and on the top floor bannister (see photo) - on our final and third night at the property, there was a glitch with the front door keypad even when we pushed the code it would not light up. We called booking.com and even took a video showing that the keypad would not light up. It took us over 2.5 hours to get in and that was around 12:30 AM. - there are more photos, but this site will only allow us to put 4. Pictures tell the story.

Micaela (6/5): Great location, spacious room, clean house, but it was a warm night. - Great location, clean, spacious Ester graciously let us check-in 45 minutes early and greeted us upon our arrival. The room was warm, thankfully it was a cooler night. The lock into the room took a few tries to figure out that the red light will flash and then there would be a click before the handle could be turned.
Jenna (5/5): Not worth the money unless you’re with a group who can rent the whole space. - The space was very neat and tidy, which was very appreciated. As far as I could tell, everyone stays upstairs and shares one bathroom—which is terrible when other guests show up late at night and decide to all take showers and be really loud.

Arvind (9/5): Perfect place for a comfortable & homely stay - This was exactly as shown on Booking.com. It's fairly new property and very well maintained. Location is just superb and close to good restaurants. We stayed for 14 days and it felt like we are staying at our home. The best room is the Superior Family Room which is the only one having attached toilet. This room is very spacious. Even the bathroom is quite spacious with lots of natural light. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Toilets which are common between rooms don't have locking facility. If door knobs can't be changed then some kind of placard be placed to show if it's occupied. This was pointed out by earlier visitors also.

Tiju (5/5): Overall it's a good place if the small glitches could be fixed in the future. - Location, outside beauty. Shared bathroom door locks were not functioning. Privacy was compromised. The day we reached the front door was latched from inside, so we were not able to get in with the code for sometime.

Cairns (10/5): Exceptional - The Ester House was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Location is beautiful and so quiet. Ester the owner is friendly and cleans every inch of the house every day. Short walk to shops, cafes etc. Would highly recommend staying here. Leaving.
Holly (8/5): Cool home/hotel in a walkable neighborhood - This is essentially a boarding house. It's a very large home in a lovely neighborhood. There are about 6 bedrooms for rent with shared bathrooms (one room had it's own bathroom), shared kitchen and living space. You check yourself in, all rooms are locked with keypad locks so it feels secure. There are clear house rules and expectations. The only staff we encountered were the cleaning crew, who were lovely and accommodating (we had to come back to retrieve a left=behind item and they were flexible and helpful). The place is very clean. The neighborhood is the highlight. We walked to great restaurants, the beach and the UBC forest. Top notch! I would have given it a higher rating but our bed was extremely hard. My son said his bed was great though, so I think it depends on which room you get.
Leslie (8/5): Close to UBC, clean comfortable beds - Nice, very clean house with big room (deluxe double) with 2 double beds and private bathroom. Kitchen has basic supplies. It would have been nice to have a Keurig coffee option and a tv in the bedroom or living area. Close to UBC.
Young (10/5): Pleasant staying - Cleanliness is the most important thing I look for in a place to stay, and I was really happy that this one met that standard. The location was also great—it’s in a quiet neighborhood, and there was a grocery store just a 7-minute walk away. There were also plenty of restaurants nearby, which was super convenient. Thanks again for providing the iron I requested as well. If I come back to the area, I’d definitely stay here again!

Jody (6/5): If you enjoy staying in hostels this stay will not disappoint. - The Ester House was close to good restaurants and in a pleasant neighborhood. It was possibly my misunderstanding, but I had expected my own bathroom, and it turned out to be a shared bathroom. The house was not set up to be a habitation for lots of people. The walls did not have enough insulation to cut down on noise between rooms and floors which resulted in a very loud place to try and sleep.

Andy (6/5): Great price and wonderful neighborhood, but the room was not what we thought it would be - The house is in a very quiet neighborhood with plenty of parking. The host sent an message the day we were arriving with the codes to the front door as well as our room which made it easy to access. The entryway and shared spaces were quite lovely. Great price for four people. The host was not there when we arrived and we were traveling when the message was sent so I didn't think to check. Thankfully one of the other guests let us in and called the host so were able to sort it out. The room we had was clean, but very plain as opposed to the pictures which made it seem far more extravagant. The bathroom was not connected to the room and was extremely small, especially considering we are a family of four. Although technically everything was as it was advertised, however what we stayed in was not what we thought we were going to experience.
Petros (9/5): Great and quiet location and tons of common space. The host WILL fill all the rooms - Loved the common space in order to gather with our other travel companions. Even though it was only one night, we appreciated a space where we could sit and eat some dessert and not have to wait outside a crowded restaurant forever. There was a lot of open space in the middle floor. It's an interesting choice in terms of renovating the space to be all bedrooms, because bathroom placement was creative. We wish the rooms were numbered instead of/in addition to a description of the room. Apparently the host had seven rooms and we booked out 6 of them and then canceled one. The host accidentally gave us codes to all seven rooms and told us not to use one, and then two, of the remaining rooms. From my memory, I canceled one of the rooms based on the pictures of the room and used the remainder. Only after trying to go to sleep at about 1am did I hear extra guests who rented out the one room remaining. Except these guests shared a bathroom with the room we used. I was fortunate that I was still awake to clean out the bathroom and close the door to our bedroom so that they were not disturbed. But they did remain awake using the shared bathroom until 3am. The host has every right to rent out whatever rooms she desires, but I wish they understood that we intended to leave the ground floor room empty on purpose, that's why I canceled that one specifically. I also wish the host was a little more organized in giving the room codes without giving us access to all the rooms.
Roan (8/5): Comfortable stay in a very quiet neighborhood - Very quiet neighborhood -- our room faced onto the street, but we heard almost no cars driving past. Our room was comfortable and spacious, and the whole house was very neat and tidy. The self-check-in meant we could arrive late at night, which was very convenient for us! The house was quite sparse, with lots of big, empty rooms, and no tea or coffee. Our bedroom shared a bathroom with the neighbouring room which was fine, but the bathroom couldn't be locked from the outside, which meant that our bedroom could be accessed from the next room. However, the whole house was locked so this was only a small security concern.

Gayle (10/5): We would stay here again! - Stunning home, very comfortable and in a beautiful neighborhood. Everything is new and modern and well set up for checking in and checking out. All the instructions for the locks and wifi etc were clear. The whole process of booking and staying in this home was seamless and easy. While there were other guests we couldn't hear them and never saw them - it felt as though we had this big beautiful place to ourselves.
