Guest Reviews
- Niklas (10/5): - We had a really great time at the Pacuares nature reserve. Thank you so much for this unique experience. The staff, the reasearchers and the volunteers were super helpful and knowledgeable.
We were lucky to see some leatherback turtles. It was an amazing experience. Also the forest tour and the boats tour were really nice and we learnt a lot. -
- meijers (10/5): - Geweldige ervaring. Kleinschalig en een absolute aanrader. 2 nachten geboekt en deze waren zeer de moeite waard.
- Deborah (7/5): Good -
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Karin (9/5): Amazing stay in nature off the beaten track - Location in nature
Gatden with animals
Great guide, French lady Loiza(?)
Boattrip Low flexibility on boat time to get back to the mainland
- Hanyue (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barbara (9/5): Superb -
- Susan (7/5): Enjoyed our stay and the turtle tour was a very special experience - Location was remote and very peaceful, right next to the ocean. The bungalow was clean, however, there were no tables or chairs or anywhere to sit other than the bed.
- Johnny (10/5): Great experience - This place is not an hotel like your standard hotel but what a nice place to stay. Eating what the staff/volunteers makes is really nice, quality of food is good.
If you enjoy nature and always want to watch turtles nesting, this is the place to go.
- Karen (6/5): Very expensive for what it was, I would not rush back - We timed our stay to the leatherback turtles nesting season and we were very lucky to see it in person. It was an amazing experience to see the whole process from a turtle emerging from the ocean to returning to it. This stay was very much a mixed bag. As for the accommodation/stay itself, that was rather underwhelming considering the high price. There was a huge amount of downtime (hours at a time), but we were not allowed to either hike the trails ourselves or swim and so there was nothing to do other than sit in hammocks (the rooms were stifling). My husband decided to catch up on some work and asked for the wifi password for his computer (as opposed to his phone) and was dismissed. Food and accommodation was decidedly ok (photos on booking.com are nicer than in reality) and many of the staff seemed only to have a rather basic knowledge of the project/animals they were supposed to be working on/with. We have stayed in multiple jungle lodges/ecolodges and Pacuare was very expensive for what we got.
- Sue (7/5): Fantastic project and great to see the team at work. - Amazing location and staff absolutely fantastic. Experiencing the turtle monitoring, the boat tour and the north station hike were highlights for us . Some sort of fan in the bedrooms would have been appreciated for the particularly hot and humid nights or mosquito nets so the windows and doors could be left open to allow airflow into the rooms.
Hammocks or more relaxed seating for guests to use in the communal areas or on the guest house deck would have been nice - somewhere separate to the EPI group for quiet moments during the day.
More opportunities to go out in the tour boats - day and night tours perhaps?
- Granv (8/5): Interesting and Educational overnight - If you're looking at this property then you are going with a purpose of either seeing turtles or the conservation side. The staff and volunteers here are very friendly and accommodating. Food is really delicious and plentiful. The location is remote and the boat journey there is a trip in itself. Great experience. The benefits are also the downside. Unfortunately on our trip there was thunder, lightning and tons of rain! This meant that we couldn't do any of the activities planned (boat trip, turtle census etc.). These things are all outside of the conservations control so it was just unfortunate. They were really understanding and tried to find other options for us to do. We had two rooms at Casa Grande - one was fine but the other room was really hot and humid and uncomfortable at night.
- Anneke (9/5): wildlife, kindness and natural beauty - The rooms are very basic, but clean. There is no fan, no AC and little electricity.. but it’s ALL ok.. because this is a magical experience at a very special place on earth with really nice people with the greatest heart — who help turtles survive! 🐢💚 lots of wildlife (also mammals!) in the jungle… great tours with enthousiasts young people included with the stay… Thanks Rose! she was great!! it’s a pity that it’s not allowed to swim in the sea, so it can get hot! an outdoor shower at the beach or something could be great.. to cool down and rinse off
- Mathias (9/5): Wonderful stay – we will be back in the future - Pacuare is an amazing experience. When you have grown tired of the big resorts, you can access a unique part of CR here.
We saw many animals, that we did not see elsewhere – even after 2 stays in Tortuguero, Pacuare was its own.
And even if we did not see a single turtle (nor egg-laying or hatching) – since we came out of season, it was still a great experience.
Michael needs a special thanks – extraordinary service minded and helped us to a great stay.
We will surely comeback – also to get to see Agamis ;)
PS. Amazing food. Perhaps the best food we got on our entire 3 weeks in Costa Rica. Well done to the kitchen in Pacuare :) If you arrive during Summer Time, it can be incredibly hot. Remember – this place is rustic and not a 5 star hotel. You will be woken at night by snoring monkeys and happy frogs – but that is the reason why you go here of course so don't complain and enjoy a wonderful place in total isolation.
