- Adrian._.M (10/5): - Wonderful place to stay. Great breakfast and 2 beautiful dogs. It's a bit of a drive to get to from the main highway, street is quite dark at night

- Shari (10/5): Magical, host is wonderful and her 2 dogs are so special and the breakfastshe made was superb! - Total serenity
- McLaren (10/5): Piece of Heaven - The amazing house and decor, a comfortable beautiful veranda for relaxing in the evening, incredible three course home made breakfast lovely attentive host and the two sweetest canine hosts ever. The toilet is in the bedroom. But I still loved everything about this place.
- Mauro (10/5): - Hummingbird Garden is an incredibly special place: we adored it as soon as we arrived!
The old cottage is beautiful, surrounded by a nice garden and a wood, immersed in the nature, with a large terrace where, yes, you can see a lot of hummingbirds coming to seep a special sweet nectare prepared for them by the wonderful host, Melanie. The house is something like a small museum and/or old Grandma house, with original pieces of forniture and fireplaces and porcelains happily mixed up with amazing decorations which make you think this could be a fairy house! And... who knows? Maybe Melanie is a fairy herself? We could not be sure of this, but surely she is so friendly and kind that she let us feel immediately at home, as if we were visiting an old friend of us. Her welcome smile comes directly from the hearth!
The rooms, with wonderful pieces of fornitures and a very special tub, was large and beautiful and perfectly clean, with a very nice view on the garden; we enjoyed having our dinner on one of the sofas on the veranda, with Mel's two beautiful dogs resting at our feet and the hummingbirds flyinf around us! The breakfast was somptuos, served in porcelain dishes and cups in the wonderful dining room equipped with ancient pieces of forniture...
Hummingbirds Garden is very quiet and silent, perfect for resting and relaxing, but it is just a few km from the town of Ladysmith and the city of Nanaimo, where you can start exploring the beautiful Vancouver Island
Mel's place really surprised us: it is amazing, you must see it yourself! Every thing was perfect and surprising!
- Jonathan (10/5): We should have got there earlier to enjoy it more - It is just beautiful in a wonderful location. Our host Mel was jamazing and provided us with the most delightful breakfast
- Jon (10/5): - Beautiful property, elegant garden with a rugged outdoorsy vibe
So many hummingbirds greet you all day long, really suits the name
- aileen (9/5): A wonderful place to spend a nite or two getting away from it all. Thanks again! - The property is a hidden gem, a lovely century house filled with eclectic furnishings, surrounded by lovely gardens where hummingbirds frequent. The multi-course breakfast was among the best meals we enjoyed on our vacation. Our hostess was lovely, friendly, accommodating and welcoming to myself and my partner - we'd recommend this B&B to all who are seeking a safe, relaxing, quiet getaway. It should be noted in the room descirption if the toilet/shower is in the bedroom, without any privacy screen or curtain.
- Annemarie (10/5): - Herzliches willkommen, liebevolle und gemütliche Einrichtung, sehr gutes und abwechslungsreiches Frühstück, unkompliziertes und freundschaftlichen miteinander. N
- Andrea (9/5): - Beautiful home, very welcoming host, excellent breakfast.

- Suze (10/5): Unique historical B&B, we were made to feel completely at home by our wonderful host, Mel. - Mel is a wonderful host, just bubbling with hospitality! At first the house and furnishing were a little over-whelming but after a bit we came to love it all! We love its history! And Mel's breakfasts were out of this world! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting the other couples we shared breakfast with. We had a wonderful stay! Our room did not have a separate bathroom. A shared bathroom would have been OK with us.
- Mark (10/5): An unrivalled experience. - If your idea of a great stay is a Hilton then don’t go. On the other hand if you like unrivalled hospitality, a warm and engaging hostess and a first class breakfast, then this is the place for you. A unique and wonderful experience. Nothing.
- Elaine (10/5): It is so peaceful and beautiful. We really enjoyed our time there. - Everything was amazing! The house, the host, the food, the grounds, the location - everything was awesome! Definitely need to spend more than 1 night. Next time :)
- Ayla (10/5): -

- Nicholas (10/5): Fantastic place to relax! - We had a delightful stay at Hummingbird Gardens. Melani is a wonderful host, friendly, helpful and interesting to chat with. She makes excellent breakfasts daily and has lots of suggestions for things to do in the area. The house is gorgeous with a massive wraparound deck where you can sit and relax. Her dogs greet you when you arrive and are always happy to meet new friends. It was a great vacation and we'll be back for sure.
- Po (10/5): The breakfast is great. We have special request to start the breakfast earlier and the host is very supportive. - It’s a very nice decorated house. Nothing
- Tony (10/5): Beautiful! - Mel is an amazing host with a really fantastic old house B&B. The breakfasts were delicious and the beds super comfortable. Lots of little details went into making our stay super pleasant and welcoming. Thanks, Mel! Mel's place is a bit far away from other things. This can be good or not so good depending on what you are going for. It's about a 10-15 beautiful drive to the main road 😁
- Benjamin (10/5): Delightfully delicious! - The banana waffles with maple syrup and whipped cream Leaving again - third time in 2 weeks!
- Robert (9/5): Superb - The breakfast was outstanding. The lady who ran the B and B was very accomodating and friendly. It was an amazing older home that had been moved from Victoria. The location was a little out of the way.
- Benjamin (10/5): You gotta go and stay - and remind yourself that good people do still exist! - This house is almost as wonderful as its owner! Leaving!
- Jan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Victoria (10/5): Relaxing and peaceful. - Excellent hostess. Helped with everything and asked about dietary needs. Fun to watch hockey with. ;). Wanting to help with anything we needed.
- Kevin (10/5): Thank you for everything Mel! - The gardens and the deck are amazing. It was super clean and our host was amazing. She took my dietary restrictions into consideration when planning our fabulous breakfast. Her dogs are lovely and there’s an unreal amount of hummingbirds. It’s very peaceful and calm.
- Nick (10/5): A great place to stay 🙂 - We were really well looked after. Breakfast was great and the deck was a perfect place to chill. The house was full of eclectic decorations.
- Karina (10/5): Exceptional stay - highly recommend - Location is great to relax, unwind and enjoying the tranquility of Mel‘s place whilst watching hummingbirds.
Mel is the kindest host imaginable that takes great interest in her guests and goes the extra mile.
Her breakfast is nothing but delicious
- Ronda (9/5): Superb - Beautiful heritage house on a beautiful property near the water!
- Connor (10/5): Staying at the Hummingbird Garden B&B was the best experience! - The breakfast was exceptional. Mel went above and beyond and served us a delicious breakfast. The food was amazing and she was an excellent host. There was nothing we didn't like about our stay. It was A class!
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sophia (10/5): Exceptionally peaceful, welcoming and relaxing - If you’re looking for somewhere on Vancouver Island to relax, refresh, and renew your spirit, this is the place. Mel is an outstanding host who truly loves to welcome guests to her pride and joy, a beautifully restored and appointed Edwardian home that offers quiet comfort and a peaceful setting. I enjoyed a spacious room with large comfortable bed and its own bathroom, overlooking the garden. The entire house is furnished and decorated with antiques and are a delight to view - and most have an interesting story behind them. Mel cooks breakfast from scratch using local products when available, and will offer different types of hand crafted coffees to try and overall get your day off to a fantastic start. You can explore the local area, or stay in and relax in the parlour or the wrap around veranda with lots of cozy seating…you can even take a blanket to ward off the evening chill. And yes, there are plenty of hummingbirds to watch!
The location provides easy access to the Ladysmith, Nanaimo, and Cedar area, and the Cowichan valley in general. The whole area is worth exploring for its natural beauty and local farms, markets and artisans. Uber hasn’t quite found its way here yet, though it’s supposed to start some time in 2025, so until then you will get the most of your visit by having your own car. That also allows you visit the nearby communities for other meals, and Mel can give you some great tips and recommendations.
I look forward to returning to enjoy the comfort and hospitality of Hummingbird Gardens, and hope others love it as much as I did.
