Guest Reviews
- Sandy (10/5): -
- Eugene (7/5): Loved La Fortuna but won’t be staying at this location again. Too rustic for our taste. - The location was great, close to town and shops. The onsite bar was nice and the bartender, Kenneth, was even better. The grounds were a manicured paradise. Close access to the river behind the property although there was some construction on the path leading down to the river. The room was more rustic than portrayed in the pictures online. In bungalow 5, there were many issues. The slat wood walls had gaps in them from warping allowing light(and bugs) to enter the room. The A/C crapped out on us making lots of racket for two nights then finally crapping out the third day. They were able to have it repaired while we were out on excursions so that’s a plus. No closet, no hangers, or no hooks in the room to hang clothes so you’re living out of your suitcase. Lots of repairs needed: shower door handle loose and full of calcium, bath sink very loose, trash cupboard broken, lighting very dim in bathroom, no place to put suitcases other than floor, ceiling fan cannot be on without the light also being on so no fan while sleeping, string of lightbulb string around the spa outside had only 6 of 20 that worked.
- Yoryana (10/5): -
- Miriam (7/5): - The property is set on a nice garden and it's nice to have your own patio with hammock and hot tub. The room was nothing special from the inside. The booking description said we had a queen bed but in reality it was a standard small double. We couldn't open the windows because they were locked and there were no nets. They also didn't clean our room while we were out both days which isn't a big issue but considering the price we paid not worth the expense for such a standard room.
- Sandra (4/5): ….

- Ida (9/5): Lovely place, good cabins, excellent staff, close to all of the main attractions in La fortuna and beautiful surrounding - I loved the cabin we got with a hot tub and the erea around is so beautiful a lot of flowers and wildlife, staff is very nice and can provide good information. Only thing I did not like is the bed is on the harder side, I guess it is more common in other countries compared to where I am from.
- Bo (10/5): Wonderful stay - Very nice place to stay near La Fortuna, with jungle feel gardens
- Guido (8/5): - Vriendelijk en behulpzaam personeel. Een mooie, nette bungalow met jacuzzi. Een aanrader met een goede locatie om streek te verkennen. Uitrustening van keukentje was minimaal.
- Miroslaw (10/5): -
- CARINA (10/5): Family time .. tranquility - Privacidad Everything
- Kim (9/5): Cozy, private, and clean hotel at a great location - We booked the room with whirlpool which was great. Our room faced the back of the property with complete privacy. The room was very clean, equipped with a small kitchenette incl. coffee maker and fridge. The breakfast was authentic but the price listed on booking.com was incorrect. Breakfast cost $15/person and not $8. The hotel has a bar and right down the street is a supermarket. The location in general was great. Not too far away but very quiet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking is free and was close to our room. We stayed during the off season and there was some construction going on during the day which was a little annoying but we understand that work has to get done to upkeep the property. Not too much of an inconvenience but worth mentioning. The laundry service was good but pretty pricey at $5/kg.
- Charlotte (10/5): Lovely private cabin - Lovely private cabin, staff were very attentive and it is beautifully decorated. Restaurant is nice with a good selection of food. Hot tub was more like a bath in that you fill it from a two and the water wasn’t hot, only warm
- María José (10/5): El lugar superó mis expectativas es precioso, un lugar al que sin duda alguna volvería. - El lugar es espectacular No tengo ninguna queja fue maravilloso
- Caleb (8/5): -
- Gotter (10/5): We loved Hotel Rancho Cerro Azul, it's a great basecamp for the La Fortuna area. - The gardens around the room were amazing and the walk to the river was enjoyable as well. The restaurant and service were top-notch. I definitely give them my highest recommendation. My wife and I enjoyed everything.
- Andrew (9/5): Perfect La Fortuna accommodations! - This is our second time staying at Rancho Cerro Azul and I wouldn't stay anywhere else in La Fortuna. The grounds are beautiful, the staff is friendly and accommodating, the rooms are so comfy and super clean. I love the location...it's outside of the busy touristy downtown area and super quiet but still close enough to have easy access to everything. That we couldn't stay longer and didn't have time to enjoy happy hour in their bar.
- Nicky (9/5): Beautiful lodges surrounded by nature - Lovely secluded location with lots of privacy in each bungalow. Really comfortable rooms and great service. Hummingbirds and other birds in the trees behind our room. Hammock on the balcony was great for relaxing. Lovely walk down to the river from the accommodation. Excellent food at the restaurant. The best place we stayed during our trip to Costa Rica. Construction on the lodge next door meant it was noisy during the day. Bathroom was a bit dated.
- Joshua (9/5): Superb - The staff is amazing!! Willing to go above and beyond for their guests! The location is excellent. You can get to most of the major attractions near arenal in 10 minutes. Also the fact that they can arrange tours on site and provide transportation for excursions is awesome! Bed was a little firm but that's ok. I know a lot of people prefer that and it wasn't a bad mattress by any means.
- Jose (10/5): Exceptional - We really enjoyed this cabins, surrendered by nature and been able to walk down the crik is so amazing.
I really recommended to anyone.
- Stéphanie (1/5): Bad - My husband and I we stayed at Rancho Cerro Azul in February 2025 during our honeymoon in Costa Rica. We really liked the hotel, but on the last morning when we were packing I couldn’t find a painting that I had bought as a souvenir. I had left it on the nightstand beside my bed, in the bag from the shop, but it wasn’t there anymore. We were leaving early, before the front desk opened. I contacted the hotel later that day, and after a lot of research, they found it in the trash that had been taken from our bedroom the day before. The cleaning team thought it was garbage so it was thrown away (it didn’t look like garbage, and it was far away from the trash bin…). But we were so happy they had found it, and said it was in good condition (it was protected by a cardboard and there wasn’t much in that garbage). I asked if they could bring the painting to Cañas where we were for the night, or at the Liberia airport because we were leaving the next day. They couldn’t. I asked if they could mail it to Canada and they said yes, no problem. Two months later, after multiple messages, they still haven’t mailed it, and don’t answer most of my messages anymore. I would not recommend this hotel.
- Julian (8/5): Very good -
- Christopher (8/5): Very good - The shower water temperature is either scalding hot or freezing with no in between
- Ana (8/5): Very good - The natural surroundings and the trail to the Fortuna river In general, it was ok. A bit simple and somewhat old, but the balcony and the corridor in the room were nice. And we had a good sleep
- Karen (9/5): Tropical Paradise outside of LaFortuna - We appreciated the privacy this cabin provided us. There was a rain forest in back of our unit with many birds we enjoyed watching and listening to while sitting on the back patio. In the evenings we enjoyed having Happy Hour drinks at the onsite bar and dinner at the restaurant. It was just a 5 minute drive to LaFortuna. We will definitely come back for another stay. The lighting was dim everywhere in the unit.
- Newcombe (5/5): The price was good however would definitely not stay there. Loud and terrible lighting - The location was close to most excursions and restaurants. The location of room 10 however and well as the cottages behind us is literally feet away from a busy road…. All night and ours of traffic. Not at all relaxing or peaceful dispute the nice grounds.
Also the lighting was horrible. Beyond dark. We asked if there were extra lamps or bedside lights we could use. Kitchen you could barely see at night. Front desk said they’d see if the could find any and we never had anyone follow up
Also when we asked for another room further from road they said they were full
Water was almost never even warm. All of us had freezing cold showers. Cool would be fine but not cold. See above
- Stepco (9/5): Strongly recommend - Our stay here was great. The room was very spacious, it was clean, there was a nice balcony to sit outside and the surroundings were very green. It is a little bit on the outside of La Fortuna but for us this was great to have a calmer environment.
- Pacia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ricka (10/5): This hotel felt like a hidden gem! - Our favorite part of this hotel was sitting on the back deck drinking coffee and watching a family of howler monkeys in the trees. We also had hummingbirds daily and much more! Breakfast was excellent and the entire staff were friendly and helpful. We were able to book a full day tour through the front desk at this hotel as well! Only wish list would be to have a hot spring/access to a pool.
- Lisa (8/5): Great stay in good location - Great location with friendly helpful staff . Bit rustic but very good value for money and super comfy beds Kitchen supplies lacked a few basics ie bowls
- Jody (10/5): Loved it! - Cabinas were large and well equipped. Loved our private hot tub! Beautiful hike down to the river, great little bar with giant Jenga. Staff was super friendly.
- Bruce (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (5/5): Beautiful location, but rooms are not worth the price. - The grounds are magnificent. Our room (#5) had multiple problems. There are holes in the walls where animals and insects entered the room. The sink faucet was not secured to the countertop making it difficult to use. It was impossible to get the AC to a comfortable temperature. The room needs extensive maintenance and refurbishment. Breakfast in the dining room was so-so.
- Anthony (9/5): Superb -
- Thao (10/5): A wonderful stay at the hotel! - Excellent and friendly staff
Beautiful landscapes and scenery
- Nasir (10/5): Friendly and magical experience - Excellent location just outside of the town with beautiful surroundings. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Loved our stay. Nothing
- Ronald (10/5): Beyond my expectations. - Everything was great, the staff were amazing, friendly and helpful. 10/10 for everyone who work there.. breakfast was amazing as well. I had a rental car and it felt safe to leave my car park at the parking lot. Highly recommended. Definitely will book again when I’m back in costa I wish I tried to turn on the jacuzzi on the day that I got there. I tried to do it on the say I was leaving come to find out it didn’t work, but I’m sure if I did mention that they would’ve fix it.
- Xiaorui (10/5): Exceptional - This place is a perfect balance of convenience and nature. It's ideally located, just a short drive from the town, yet feels like a peaceful retreat surrounded by beautiful nature. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The lighting could be a bit brighter but not affect that much
- Federica (2/5): Very poor -
- Natasha (10/5): Exceptional - Bed was comfy. Location was great. Facilities very nice.
- Bethel (8/5): Quiet, cool, and adventurous - When I arrived, the staff was very kind and patient with me. I forgot to return my key and they were understanding when I came back to return it. They also provided me with a printed list of nearby tour options that saved me time in figuring out my plan the following day. I fell asleep early and woke up in the middle of the night. I’m thankful they had a tv with a Netflix subscription to occupy me.
Additionally, I accidentally locked myself out and the staff was very accommodating. As a solo traveler, I felt very safe at this lodging location too. The fridge in the room suddenly broke for some reason. I didn’t use it at all outside of opening it.
- Christopher (9/5): Superb -
- Amy (9/5): Superb - The property is beautiful! Very large room with kitchenette.
The staff were fantastic! The private tour guides were their stuff and were just great!
- Rosanna (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Jennee (9/5): Superb -
- Andrea (7/5): Good - The property is beautiful
Staff is friendly Too close to traffic, it sounded like we were next to a freeway. This was the family cabin. I'm sure other cabins would be better.
- Michael (10/5): Nice as the pictures. - Our bungalow with river view was as nice as the pictures. Spacious, and the floor to ceiling window to the balcony and lush jungle made it a place you could spend time in. Though I didn't mind, you can't actually see the river through the thick trees, but you can hear it.
- Suzanne (10/5): We enjoyed our time there, would recommend! - Beautiful location, beautiful scenery, clean, good food, friendly and helpful staff. Lots to do in the area. Lovely No complaints
- Sallee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Khaasia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bachmeier (10/5): Easy - Easy Proximity to the late night traffic
- Douglas (9/5): Excellent value and atmosphere - Quiet, but close to town
Friendly staff
Individual cabins with back porch/hammock
Comfortable beds
Excellent breakfast
- Shannon (10/5): 10/10 - Wish we could’ve stayed longer! Beautiful property, amazing room with a hot tub and hammock, and delicious breakfast. Staff was wonderful. Free welcome drink was great at the cute bar on site. Property right by a river with walking trails to explore. N/a
- Method (9/5): If you are looking for a Arenal Volcano hotel with tropical grounds, stat at Rancho Cerro Azul! - Honestly, the grounds of this hotel are stunning and lush. Flowers, ferns, birds, howler monkey's and many more natural elements surround you. We had a monkey "show" from our back balcony every afternoon! The "rooms" are actually your own, large "cabin" with a private balcony, hammock and cold plunge tub. The a/c works well and the beds must be bigger than a king size! The showers are spacious (and so is the room) and they have a nice, large shower head and good water pressure. The outdoor bar was a highlight that included yummy appetizers, music, lights and a large Jenga game.
- Ares (9/5): Superb -
- Isabel (10/5): Great service, would recommend to anyone staying in la fortuna. - Spacious rooms, lovely guys on service , close to a good restaurant and on the road to la fortuna. Beautiful grounds , great breakfast Bring earplugs if you are in a villa near the road, some cars are noisier than others! Not the property’s fault obviously/ just a tip for those light sleepers.
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional -
- E&p (8/5): Very good - Really nice location, clean room Feels like an american tourist trap with their crazy expensive tours, we just skipped them
- Tena (8/5): Very good - Beautiful setting, comfortable room, excellent and welcoming staff. Good breakfasts at a reasonable price.
- Margaret (10/5): Exceptional - Rancho Cerro is a small oasis about a 5 minute drive from the town center. The gardens surrounding the bungalows are beautiful. Lots of birdlife to view while relaxing from our deck. Alonso and Kevin are great hosts. They went above and beyond to make our stay special, starting with a welcome drink and refreshing cool towel. We also received a complimentary drink at the cute on-site bar. They helped to arrange some great tours. We would definitely stay again.
- Gabriela (10/5): Excelente! Pura Vida!! - Everyone who works here is amazing
The place was like a dream
Loved sleeping with window open and listening to the sounds of nature all night
Would love to go back!! Nothing!
- Robert (9/5): Loved the ambience and relaxed setting. Very nice cabins. - Very nice and comfortable. Breakfast very good. Cabin was great and hot tub welcomed on hot days.
- Peris (9/5): Superb - Family owned and run. Helpful with any request to facilitate wonderful experiences with our stay. Excellent location. Our cabin was closest to the road and was a concern with road noise when turning in for the night. My only discontent.
- Mark (9/5): Nice place to stay - Rooms are spacious. The gardens the hotel is set in are lovely. Nice restaurant near by where the food is great.
- Sohail (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yeiner (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kenn (10/5): Just perfect - Everything was perfect
- Alina (9/5): I would come back anytime. - The staff is very accommodating and nice, breakfast is good, good value for money, very well maintained garden , access to river and wild nature, walking distance to town. The Birds and the flowers are amazing. Nothing worth mentioning.
- Mark (9/5): Great location, good value for money. - Location Few bugs and ants in room
- Olivia (7/5): Good - Great little nature trail in the back of the property
- Jakob (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were so sweet & helpful. I asked via e-mail to book some tours, so they would be ready for us from day 1. We got excellent recommendations & the tours were also 1st class.
The breakfast was nice & the rooms are all facing the green jungle with a nearby path directly to the little river. Nothing
- Aimilia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adi (8/5): Very good - We had a lovely stay here! The king sized bed was great, the view of nature was lovely and the private hot tub was amazing - definitely recommending not passing that up. The staff was very friendly. There were two different nights where there was a ton of noise - once from the nearby restaurant (having a private party), once from the cabin next to us having an all night party. The sound carries into the cabin very strongly. There’s also no phone to communicate with the front desk.
Also it’s expected because it’s in nature, but expect a ton of insects and critters inside the cabin (ants, lizards, spiders, etc).
- Sydney (6/5): Good for a budget but not super nice - The location and all the plants nearby were very pretty, the staff was super nice, the River walk available nearby, not too far away from town and good restaurants nearby The beds were super uncomfortable (that seems common in Costa Rica) the room wasn’t very clean- there was a buildup of dust on the ceiling fan, bathroom shower was kind of gross because the floor wasn’t slanted so the water never fully drained
- Beatrice (8/5): Good stay for a couple of days - The gardens and the staff. Room are a private wood cabins with a balcony. Rooms are quite basic and small.
- Tallulah (9/5): Superb -
- Ronny (10/5): Hidden gem - Very nice property, close to forest and river with a small hiking trail and beautiful gardens... Love the fact that is at very convenient location, out of the noise of downtown but only 10 minutes away from the hotsprings areas.. All was great, plan to visit them again, and try to get cabin with jacuzzi 😁
- Bachmeier (9/5): It was a great visit. Kevin, the host is a very nice guy. - Breakfast was tasty. It starts at 7am. If you’re an early riser and coffee is your jam, bring it with you and brew in your room. They did provide a small amount but I like leche in my coffee. It was the only thing that would have enhanced my early morning on the private patio in the hammock listening to the howler monkeys waking up. Early am and coffee is my ritual. No access to early morning coffee 😜
- Teylor (10/5): Great value for a family trip to La Fortuna! - The property was beautiful, staff was very helpful and great proximity to La Fortuna.
- Kishtothekina (9/5): Pleasant, quiet and good bang for your buck - It was a very cute spot. A little bungalow, surrounded by plants like you're in the jungle or something with a kitchenette type space on the back porch. It had a sink, burners, appliances and a table. The front porch had some chairs and a hammock. It was very cute. Beds were comfortable and the AC worked. The staff was nice, friendly and helpful. It was quiet and had nice grounds. Give you coffee and breakfast (for a fee) in the morning. There weren't enough outlets or a phone in the room. So if you had to talk to the front desk you had to go there or find a way to message them (which wasn't quick responses). The shower temperature would constantly jump from hot to cold, which was a bit annoying. Pictures look like you're in a "tree house" but it's more of a bungalow surrounded by big plants. Smaller room than expected and no full mirror. A bit on the outskirts. Minimum amenities. We didn't see the pool or spa, seemed like it was outsourced.
- Anonymous (6/5): Pleasant -
- Anonymous (10/5): Loved it! Beautiful with river sounds at night! - The area was beautiful, and the cabins were nicely placed around the property. Very peaceful and well maintained. N/a
- Ilaria (6/5): Pleasant - Very big room with nice patio.
- Steve (10/5): Lovely cabins in beautiful gardens. - Lovely cabin in beautiful grounds. You can watch hummingbirds from your private deck. Great location if you have a car - near the waterfall and close to La Fortuna in a quiet spot. Walkable to a supermarket and decent restaurant. Cabin was big enough for a couple and teenager (two double beds). Breakfast was very good with excellent views. The owner (and son) clearly want you to be comfortable. There is a good river walk right on the grounds and access to all of La Fortuna's activities. We went to the hot springs (Ecotermales - which were really good and cheaper than some of the others) Nothing.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb -
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Danish (6/5): Overall, a nice spot to stay in La fortuna. Expensive for the accommodations. - Great location with clean and convenient room. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was no kitchen, even though the hotel description mentions a kitchen. There was no microwave. The coffee provided was in an open container without creamer/sugar. There was no tea either.
- Rachel (7/5): Good - Nice location, beautiful greenery, clean rooms We were close to the road so traffic was quite loud
- Camélia (10/5): perfect - everything was perfect, the staff was very kind and helpful , the room was huge with a great deck, food was great.
- Sam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kushtrim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katie (10/5): Peaceful retreat in the middle of lots of amazing activities in Fortuna - Delicious breakfast, free parking, helpful recommendations for activities, and the cutest villas with hammocks and balconies. Also we were very close to the tour spots and to an amazing restaurant called Chante Verde. Kevin at the front desk was amazing! I wish we were a bit closer to the downtown Fortuna area, but it was okay to do the ~25 min walk or so because there were other tourists (even at night). We never felt unsafe and the hotel arranged pickup for most things too.
- Brendan (9/5): Superb -
- Elizabeth (9/5): comfortable private cabins with nice grounds. -
- Nicole (7/5): lovely family owned property in la fortuna! - Rustic beautiful grounds with a lovely family who is running the business. We had a huge family room with plenty of space and comfort for 3 adults. We had a beautiful balcony with hammocks to relax in the morning and take in the sunshine. We booked activities / tours through the reception and they were well priced vs online options like Viator and Tripadvisor. The family were always around and helpful with any questions during our stay. Family room is close to the main road so can be very noisy at night, would bear in mind if you are a light sleeper. lighting in the bathroom was not great, could be improved significantly with more lights to brighten up the space!
- Leer (8/5): beautiful place, friendly staff. nice location - clean, beautiful grounds nothing
- Julia (10/5): Relaxing and wonderful. - Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was lovely. Was perfect
