Guest Reviews
- Andrew (8/5): - Unique Confusing to work out how to get in and which room I had
- Michelle (10/5): My daughter and I can’t wait to bring the rest of the family back to this beautiful quiet hotel and town - We absolutely loved hearing the history of this magnificent building. We took the best photos. Absolutely nothing from the little bunnies playing under the trees outside at night to the yummy apples growing in the garden. Chandelier in the entry as well as one in our room everything about this property says I have a big character and you are lucky to have found out about me.

- David (6/5): Self-check in did not work well. Rooms were old-fashioned and basic, but they were clean. I’d recommend only if their ma - We booked the Bothwell Hotel of the Highlands (BoHo) because some friends were staying at Ratho Farm and we were too late to get rooms there. The location is good if you’re playing golf at Ratho Farm, the oldest golf course in the Southern hemisphere, for going fishing or exploring the Central Highlands. We arrived late around 10.30pm after a lovely dinner at Ratho Farm and the self-check in codes we were given did not work on the rear door. The Goki App we for checking in was not much help, and no one answered the landline phone number we were given when booking. Fortunately, two of the staff from Ratho Farm who were also staying at BoHo arrived and let us in. Ironically, there was an emergency mobile contact number on the inside of the rear door. It would be helpful if this was on the outside of the entry door for help with after hours access.
- Rosalie (3/5): Not good value for money - Location Very grim and untidy
- Emma (10/5): -
- Mark (8/5): Great hotel - Good facilities Nothing
- Berend (8/5): - We were upgraded to Ratho farm, that was a pleasant surprise and a great experience.
Thanks to Bothwell hotel

- Stephen (10/5): -
- Margaret (3/5): - Poor value for charge
No ventilation in room and had to chock only window that could be opened with a wooden coaster
- Elizabeth (10/5): A great talk by a local on the history of Bothwell. Clean, great views and lovely yummy food. - We were upgraded to Ratho farm which was a delightful place
- Samuel (9/5): Great experience overall - Lovely grounds, friendly and informative staff, great dining experience with other guests. Bed wasn’t very comfortable.
- Lieve (8/5): -
- Joan Griffin (5/5): - Booked the hotel but stayed at a farm. Misleading advertising. No proper information when arriving at the farm.
- Nicholas (9/5): - The staff were very helpful and friendly Nothing
- Richard (9/5): -
- Jeanette (3/5): -
- Roger (7/5): - Nice to be on the edge of the historic town. Great base for wandering about Bothwell. Some difficulties with locks, access and brekky but still enjoyed our adventure.
- Gencheff (10/5): Exceptional - We were upgraded to Ratho Farm accommodation & breakfast at no extra cost.
- Carolyn (9/5): Amazing country property - We were contacted an offered to be upgraded to the Retho Farm facility. This is a lovely property just out of Bothwell. There was a friend of Retho farm who gave a great talk about the history property . Lovely cottage very comfortable everything you need. Only stayed one night Dinner was available at Reth at $69 per person
We felt this was rather expensive. We requested to only have the main course that was $40 for a roast dinner.
- Katharine (10/5): Good location and environment - The location and environment are good, staff is very friendly and the dinner was great The bed is a bit too soft
- Lindon (7/5): all good, glad that I have finally stayed there - all of it ... great food, ambience and historic content barking dogs in the morning. Obviously dogs owned by other travellers.
- Christine (10/5): We got upgraded to Ratho Farm Stay connected to the hotel. - Supplied our own breakfast even though it was available.
We didn't stay at the hotel.
Upgraded to the Rath Farm Stay connected to above.
- Ulla (7/5): Good -
- Lisa (8/5): Nice Upgrade to Ratho Farm but I would love to have stayed in the Bothwell Hotel - We did not stay at the Bothwell Hotel but were given a free upgrade to Ratho Farm, owned by the same people I believe. We had very nice accommodation in a converted farm building and an extremely nice breakfast, if you're looking for something a bit different and quirky this is the place for you. We stayed on a Friday night, there was a wedding the next day at the venue, the building was not very sound proofed and some of the guests continued their party quite late into the night.
- Robyn (8/5): suited my needs- a quiet and clean room - quiet
the location between my start and finish points. staff available via phone no staff onsite.
- Susan (7/5): Good -
- Kellie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cheryl (7/5): Good - Quirky Description on booking. Com is wrong. There was no BBQ, no kitchen for guests, no laundry for guests. Unstaffed, breakfast was choice of 3 cereals, 1 type of bread and long life milk. No spoons on first day to eat cereal with!
- Mark (6/5): Average. - The location was ideal as it was close to everything. I was charged $65 for x2 continental breakfasts. The fresh fruit was rotten, all the condiments were passed their use by dates and also the yogurt. There was no facility to fill the kettle with water other than the tap over the basin in the public toilet facility.
- Roger (7/5): Good - Good breakfast and location Signing in process..both at hotel back door and then at room, two different codes for each.
- Keith (9/5): Superb -
- Andrea (10/5): Awesome host and food at Ratho Farm - Comfortable & clean, very old well kept building. Check in process was easy. Connected to Ratho Farm which was excellent!
- Aniela (8/5): Very good -
- Shelley (8/5): Overall a very pleasant experience. - There was a good selection at breakfast but the scrambled eggs were rubbery and we didn't like the bacon.
The group dinner was a delight, great fun.
- Howell (9/5): Superb -
- King (9/5): Country Charm - Old country charm. Huge room and comfortable bed. Has been well renovated. The stairs are steep and shallow making them difficult for older people. The washbasin a little small and too low. The shelf for toiletries too high.
- Morrison (5/5): Very unimpressed - I didn’t stay for breakfast as there was no indication that it was provided At least meet and greet on arrival and explain the running of the hotel
- Gracey (7/5): Good - Lovely room Not able to enter building
- Eunice (8/5): Relaxing, lovely to walk round part of the golf course, and enjoy a lovely meal. - We didn’t stay at the hotel but were offered accommodation at Ratho Farm at no extra charge. Here we had a room with ensuite in one of the renovated buildings on the farm and later dinner in the main residence. All good
- Victoria (6/5): A series of events, but made for strong bonds formed with the other house mates! - Location was great. A true piece of history in Bothwell, and central.
The other house guests. We bonded pretty quickly due to a series of unfortunate events. We had booked multiple rooms, but were only given the code to one room. We were not even provided with the code to the main entrance. No staff on site, so if we did not have roaming enabled on our phone to make calls, or friendly house mates, things could have been far more stressful. When we got hold of staff, they were helpful, but it was a disappointing start. I also had to assist another couple when they arrived, as they had not been provided with any access codes at all.
Facilities say there is a communal kitchen, but it is tea and coffee facilities only. There is nowhere to prepare your own food.
The rooms upstairs were clean and comfortable, but the downstairs was crowded and cluttered.
There was also an incident with the water tank blowing a fuse, so half the house had no hot water until the following day.
- Jen (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (4/5): Disappointing stay that could have been much better! - Historic part restored country hotel that had potential to be a nice stay.
The evening dinner at owners’ nearby Rathi Farm dining room was excellent & great hospitality by the staff with other guests staying there. Self check in process from instructions failed after downloading Goki. Had to be given the back door code by the backpacker Rathi farmhand who rescued us after no answer on the farm phone.
Room code worked after being shown how to key in to the named room.
Then no hot water in the shower, and no one at the farm able to help after rang again early in the morning.
Room was somewhat dusty on window ledges & surfaces. All this disappointed my wife greatly.
Continental breakfast had no plates & knives for putting spreads on the toast. My wife would not eat downstairs.
General lack of attention to important details that spoiled what should have been a great stay.
- Brendon (9/5): I used Rathos as a base to explore the Great Lakes and surrounding area. Lots of character and charm. Nice staff. - Location, layout, character, trees, landscape.
- Craig (8/5): Very good -
- Tom (8/5): Elegantly furnished classic styled heritage hotel - great stop an hour from Hobart - Beautiful old Georgian style building with very nicely appointed bedrooms. Be prepared for a little bit of wildlife action in the ceilings though possibly only seasonal - birds were nesting inside roofline. Sitting room a beautiful place to relax and wind down. Basic continental breakfast supplied.
- Weixi (6/5): Not up to hotel standard with no service, low value to money and not cleaned facilities. - The room is big and old style decorated . No service or reception when we arrived, everything was all dark and we could not figure out the hotel or the entrance and the call could not get through. We asked a pass by guy which was the only person we came across on the street in that town at 6.30pm, he told us the farm and we drove to the farm and to ask for help since the owner did not share with us the code for entrance either ( the same situation happed to another couple staying there) . There are some bread and jams for breakfast but the coffee machines were not working well with only drops of water due to not frequently cleaned and the cups were all dirty , we had to get the cups from the room( same happened to another couple there per our talks afterwards). It can not be regarded as a hotel but a self service bnb and the value for money of AUD 200 is definitely not high in Tasmania. Besides, it is located on the second floor of an old house, difficult to carry your luggages up via steep stairs.
- Iain (8/5): Met my needs very well, with the bonus of some very interesting history and a unique venue. -
- Richard (9/5): Very enjoyable in a beautiful rural setting - Interesting accommodation in an historic farm building It was a bit cold when having dinner in a big room with poor heating
- Gerard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robert (10/5): Relaxing. - The way redundant farm buildings had been used to create lovely, comfortable, accommodation . Rather a long wait for dinner on the second night of our stay but we were entertained by an interesting talk about the homestead even though it was via a laptop.
- Emilyjc (7/5): Good -
- David (9/5): Superb - Comfortable bed with good amenities in the room. Walking distance to Ratho Farm and The Castle Hotel, which was convenient for the wedding I was attending.
- Sorel (1/5): Not a great experience at all! - Not a lot - I did not stay in the property. I did not stay at the property - i was very disappointed on arrival - the rear yard was very messy and neglected - access to the property was via the rear door which had digital lock on it. The door assigned to me also had a digital lock on it but no additional internal lock for safety. There was also an additional door leading out to the rear of the property that was not closed, or locked, indicating anyone could access the property via the external stairs. The bathroom was terribly dirty, with used wet dirty washers sitting on the soap tray, the bathroom ceiling fan was caked in dirt / dust and the shampoo and soap dispensers were dirty along with a lot of mould in the shower. The large spider that also resided just above the shower was also an unwelcome find. There were spider webs throughout the room and windows and used sugar packets on bedside tables. Overall not a pleasant experience and as a solo female traveller I did not feel safe to stay.
- Leslee (6/5): Very very disappointed was not cheaper and was the worst accomodation we have had in six weeks travelling in Tasmania - The bed Breakfast supply, no milk no bread no butter and very dirty with dishes left on the table from night before .
- Mary (8/5): Very good -
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Kerrie (8/5): This old Hotel has been well renovated and provides a comfort nights accommodation in the highlands area. The compliment - This charming property has been well renovated but still holds its old world charm. Very comfortable bed and the included breakfast is simple but nice. The rear entrance of this property doesn’t do it justice but don’t let this put you off.
- Kathryn (10/5): An exceptional experience. A lovely property - We were upgraded to Ratho farm which was beyond description. So lucky for the upgrade. Bath as well as shower in bathroom. Comfortable bed. Evening meal provided in the homestead. Full breakfast the next morning. Highly recommend No microwave in the room.
- Tas (9/5): A lovely house, very clean and comfortable. Nice owners. Very happy with everything. -
- John (10/5): Tell your friends great place to stay - Tranquil calm and relaxing a wonderful experience. Full of history including the story teller Mmmm. No negatives.
- Heselwood (7/5): Good -
- Judith (6/5): I won't be going back. - Large room, very comfy bed.
Great verandah. The bare bulb in the bedroom.
The room heater that had no instructions and overheated overnight, so it had to be turned off around 3 am.
The windows were dirty.
The cobwebs on the insides of the windows.
The dead flies on the window sill of the staircase.
There were no lights on in the place when we got back from dinner.
The stairs are much too narrow for comfort or ease of use.
There was not enough milk left in the downstairs fridge for breakfast coffees. I had to go and raid our room fridge for milk.
- Ian (8/5): Excellent - Room clean. Beds comfy. This is an old building but maintained well. Such a historic feel to the place. Loved it. Free continental breakfast next morning that we were not expecting.
You let yourself in with a code.
We ate at the pub in town (walking distance) as Ratho farm had a function.
Food was great and big serves. I ordered a soup for entree and could have swum in the bowl.
Pub does shut meals early but that seems to be most of Tassie. All rooms upstairs with steep and narrow steps. Just something to keep in mind if you have heavy large luggage.
- Anne (9/5): Superb - The town was very interesting and am glad it was a detour I took because of lack of accommodation elsewhere.
Hotel also has a very interesting history. Friendly staff. The local walking map was excellent. All good
- Tasman (7/5): We found the property ideal for exploring the surrounding area. -
- Wendy (4/5): Disappointing -
- Geoff (7/5): Good -
- Barry (8/5): Great stay in an historic town. We were able to dine at their nearby farm stay. Excellent meal. - Lovely old stone building. Stairs were steep to second floor bedrooms
- Hopper (10/5): Very pleasant. We took advantage of dinner at the Ratho Homestead which was an added treat. - Large comfortable room. Great continental breakfast. Old style charm All good
- Tait (9/5): Beautiful authentic old hotel, lovely furniture, you could feel the history! - Not a brekkie person but enjoyed the toast & marmalade, room very comfortable and "homely". Nice little garden with apple trees. Was a most enjoyable stop on the way to Hobart, walked around the town and met some locals.
- Craig (7/5): Despite there being noone present at the property the place was comfortable, clean and had ensuites! - I liked the clear instructions That there was no evening meals available
We also didn't like the lack of personal touch of someone to greet, check in and be available when there was any issues.
Breakfast ran out before everyone had some
- Shelley (10/5): Very comfy beds, spacious rooms and quaint dining room to enjoy a good breakfast. - Very comfy, large beds. Easy onsite parking. Lovely old building that had spacious and well appointed rooms. There was ample breakfast included and pod coffee.

breakfast was great.
accommodation was great.
- Anonymous (6/5): Lovely historic building in a lovely historic town. - Great location. Room felt a little unclean and facilities could be better for the price.
- Carly (6/5): Comfortable for a short stay. - Lovely staff, nice room. No air conditioning and no flyscreen on the window it was really stuffy and if you want to open the window all the bugs come in.
- Caroline (10/5): Lovely, comfy stay in atmospheric hotel - Loved the historic building and large, bright bedroom, the beautiful garden and the included breakfast supplies which we enjoyed sitting at the table under the peach tree. The pillows were super comfy too! Nothing
- Janine (9/5): Excellent accommodation - The history Nothing
- Uta (10/5): History, golf and cows - The setting can't be beat. Right on the rivulet, such a stunning view.
- Anonymous (6/5): Enjoyed our stay in Bothwell, as we always do. looking forward to staying again - Great location and beautiful historical building. Pillows could be better.
- Hayden (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Groves (7/5): Good - good kitchen and nice historic feel walls thin so hear other peoples tv and noise. check in bit tricky on electronic door
- Pam (8/5): Very good -
- Phyllis (8/5): Very good -
- Rosie (6/5): Pleasant - quirky, unusual, comfortable bed. balcony grubby, security of room (how often he combinations to rooms get changed) back door open not sure who as on the premises.
