Guest Reviews
- Benjamin (10/5): -
Schone kamer
- Rahel (10/5): -

- Isabelle (10/5): Incredible stay near manuel antionio!!! - Wow, wow, wow!! An incredible stay with an amazing location! Miguel was so so kind, went above and beyond for his guests. He built the place himself and lovingly maintains it every day! Such a gorgeous stay near manuel antonio. The incredible beachfront location and eco-conscious nature of the surf camp means it is closer to camping than a hotel. There is running water, but very limited electricity. However, everything was clean, well maintained, and beautiful. Bring a portable charger, and enjoy the proximity to the beach knowing you are make a great choice to lower your environmental impact as a tourist.
- Thrift (10/5): - Everything!
- Dorota (5/5): Probably It is a cool place to surf, but conditions are really tough. - Miguel Surf Camp has a very „Pura Vida” vibe - is located right on a very beautiful beach, the guests that visit this place are really cool, and there is a group od lovely dogs that live in the camp. There is NO RUNNiNG WATER, so for the toilet and shower you need to USA bottled water.
No electricity in the rooms (there is a solar charging station in the kitchen).
We found somebody sleeping in our room.
We left a flashlight in out bed - it went missing.
- Rex (10/5): - Amazing. Such kind hosts, and you are supporting their small business (it pays for their family) and that is an admirable goal of sustainable tourism. Compared to the corporate hotel and resort options along the pacific coast, where the profits are likely going back to the US, Miguel Surf Camp is an incredibly cheap and high value stay. Right on the beach, friendly friendly locals, and cool backpackers who have sought out the road less traveled as well. Great conversations around the dinner table
- Paul (1/5): I didn’t stay because I could not find any info or make contact with the host - I could not find it. There were no directions offers in booking.com and the host didn’t respond to calls or texts I didn’t get to see it
- Bastian (8/5): - Sehr sehr schöner Strand. Sehr sehr schöner Garten. Sehr nette Gastgeber.
- Emmanuelle (8/5): Amazing beach real Costa Rican experience - The location was wonderful, Miguel was an exceptional host. We love the vibe and the eco-friendly. We are on the beach. It's build with recycle wood. You have a real Costa Rican experience. Grounding. Good value. I would say Its rudimentary, the bed are quite old and not a lot of privacy . The dogs barking at night I am a light sleeper so it bothers me but some people are completely fine with this.
- Morgan (10/5): Incredible beach front shacks - This place is incredible! It’s right on the beach with a big shared kitchen area and an outside shower. Miguel and his wife are really lovely engaging people who are very generous with their time. I met cool fellow travellers here because the space encourages you to be together and interact. It’s green and leafy and wonderful. I cannot recommend this highly enough 👌 The stairs in the shared hut are steep so if you have bad knees or balance problems I suggest asking for the floor level rooms
- Stephanie (9/5): -
Gaaf!!
- Markus (10/5): Exceptional - This accommodation is perfect for improving your surfing skills, finding peace and quiet or working remotely from time to time. The Wi-Fi has just been improved and is now suitable for making Zoom calls and streaming videos.
Miguel and his wife live in the house next door and are very helpful and caring. Miguel also offers surf lessons. He is a very good teacher and can explain things really well. He speaks fluent English and Spanish.
The accommodation itself is very lovingly designed. You are really connected to nature and can hear the waves in the accommodation, which is very calming when you fall asleep.
- Wessels (4/5): As advertised, unfortunately zero host communication - Being right on the beach was great, the staff was very polite Miguel did not communicate with us at all as soon as we booked our stay. He sent us one message explaining traveling. After that he was completely unresponsive and unhelpful
- Velga (10/5): Exceptional - Location is amazing - right on the beach. Very relaxing atmosphere. Everything was fairly basic, but had what you need, but the price was also very low. When there was a problem with the shower door Miguel was quick to fix it.
Beware that the drive up to the campsite is very narrow. Some bigger cars I think would not fit.
- Monika (10/5): A perfect place for doing nothing while also serving as a great base for exploring everything! - The location is amazing; it couldn't be better. The owners: their attention to detail, kindness, and offerings are outstanding – Miguel is also a local guide and knows everything about the area and its natural beauty There's nothing like that
- Vieillefond (10/5): Exceptional - Miguel and his wife are just a description of kindness
- James (8/5): If you want a few days relaxing by a beach and don’t care for luxury then choose here. - The location on a secluded west facing beach is incredible. Felt so wholesome watching the sunset with almost none around. The lack of lighting was pretty bad made cooking in the evening very difficult. There are a lot of bugs so if you don’t like bugs maybe stay somewhere else.
- Jsachmet (9/5): Superb - The location is maybe not so easy to get there but the feel like privat beach is worth it 🤩 Mattresses are old and way too soft
with big taught pillow.
- Gilles (9/5): Great place to disconnect and enjoy the ocean! - The proximity to the ocean, Miguel and his family are really friendly and nice, the possibility to surf, swim,... A really good place to disconnect from the stressful world. I would 100% go back again. Thanks a lot! If you don't have a car, be ready to walk 30-35 minutes to go to Quepos. But hey, it's holidays, so you have got the time :-)
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - Miguel and his camp are one of the nicest places I‘ve seen in all of Costa Rica, we enjoyed the stay very much!
- Melissa (9/5): Superb - We loved this place! Wow Miguel built it all by himself. So impressive! The sounds of the ocean are great to sleep, we enjoyed it so much!
- Théo (10/5): Paradise - Front beach
Staff adorable -
- Ivanavejrikova (10/5): Exceptional - Our kids loved the place. You are right on the beach, you can surf or just play on the beach. If you prefer beautiful nature , not luxury , it is a place for you and definitely for your kids. You have all basic equipment
you need here.
- Nina (10/5): One of the best hidden gems in Costa Rica. I would stay there again to see the sunsets in good company. - You have an endless beach almost to yourself. The sunsets are amazing and usually watched with other guests. Just thirty minutes from Miguel’s you can watch baby turtles enter the sea. It is a wonderful place to calm down and relax.
- Linnea (9/5): Superb - Surfing lessons and off the beaten trail location were wonderful. Miguel and his wife are so kind. A bit hard to get to, but worth it.
- Leon (10/5): Amazing place on the beach to enjoy nature - It was one of the best accommodations we had in Costa Rica. It is right on the beach, with a fully equipped kitchen and even a place to do barbeque. The owners also listen to the guests and most of the complaints in the reviews are fixed quickly. The place has a feel of community and chill The other guests were not so friendly, but that is hardly the fault of the owners.
The dogs are sometimes loud at night.
- Tremblay (10/5): Exceptional - Miguel and his family are super welcoming and amazing. The location is right on the beach on non tourist area which is great if you want to be away from the crowd. There is park and baby turtle release close by. This is not a 5 star resort by any mean but if you are looking for an authentic Costa rican experience with a small hand made cabana by the beach this is for you. Miguel is also an amazing surf instructor. My son and I both got up on the board first try and next thing we knew we were riding waves! Thanks you!
- Clément (10/5): Paradise close to Quepos - Private bathroom/toilet, warm welcoming, the "private" beach, cute dogs, really clean room Nothing to lock the room, not a concrete road but no need 4wd
- Ella (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anouk (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kierra (10/5): Miguel taught us how to surf, he was super friendly, we enjoyed chatting with him! it was nice and quiet, reminded me of - Directly on the beach! Miguel and his wife were amazing! BIG SPIDERS!(only saw one though)
- Thomas (8/5): Very good - Super nice people. Relaxing place.
Stayed for 2 nights.
Surf lesson was definitely worth it.
Baby turtle release just a walk down the beach.
Quepos was really nice too. Especially dinner or lunch at La Marina.
- Michael (10/5): Miguel and his wife are amazing host, true feeling of pura vida - Rustic down to earth and lovely surf camp Nothing, it was great
- Josh (10/5): Exceptional - Miguel and his family were warm and welcoming. The accommodation has everything needed and the bed was very comfortable. Perfect for what we needed. Also Miguel put us in contact with a turtle release project around 25 minute walk up the beach which was a bonus 😀
- Elisa (10/5): Exceptional - If you love nature, surfing and a simple lifestyle, its really nice. It's like camping and you are almost alone on the beach. Miguel and his wife are really nice people.
- Kellett (8/5): For a laid back, flexible, adventurous traveler, Miguel's is an experience you won't forget! - Locations amazing and you cannot beat the price. Lovely family and great place to try surfing! Nice kitchen area. Miguel is super great and speaks very good english. Taking a car across the river is challenging and the road on the island is poorly maintained especially in the rainy season. Leaving the car in Quepos is recommended. Can be a little noisy at night due to neighbors (earplugs recommended).
- Dennis (10/5): Next time definietly again. - Miguel and his family are yery kind and help you with everything you need. The Hostel is made very naturally and gives you the nicest vibes in El Cocal.
I definetly recommend you to do some Surfing lessons with Miguel. He really take time for the lesson and explains from the beginning to the end how to get things done. Even if you are a beginner.
Pura Vida
- Thomas (9/5): Superb - Super rustic, but very lovely.
- Lauren (8/5): Pura Vida - Beautiful location, really well built, right by the ocean and an absolutely beautiful vibe to enjoy a more rural feel with back to basics necessities. The community surrounding the accommodation were lovely and we felt so welcomed by everyone we met. Lots of additional add on costs if you wanted to fully immerse yourself in the surf aspects of your stay. If bugs like you bring a LOT of bug spray (and garlic)
- Elizabeth (7/5): Hot nights on a beautiful beach - The beach was fantastic.
The meals were good. Sleeping conditions.
We understand that they use solar energy, so options might be limited. If they could provide a fan, it would have made a big difference in being able to sleep at night.
- Banning93 (8/5): Remote surf camp - If you are looking for a secluded and remote spot to spend your night(s) and surf, this is the place. Miguel and his wife are making sure you have a good time. The food they serve is delicious and good value for your money. It's amazing that it is self-sufficient. That also means that you shouldn't expect luxury items like a warm shower, tv or 'noise cancelling rooms'. Definitely recommend going here!
- Josephine (10/5): Exceptional - I had a wonderful time. The stay was above my expectation. Miguel and his wife always made sure to provide the best service. This place is perfect to surf and relax.
- Miles (8/5): Very good -
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Ashlee (10/5): Best Beachside Spot in Costa Rica - Simple in the best way. I loved my stay and will definitely be back for my next surf adventure in Costa Rica. I love camping so this was a fun upgrade to have a bed in the open air with a roof and mosquito net. Due to the access, there was hardly anyone at the beach, yet great surf. Worked on my shred every day, enjoyed their yummy meals at an additional, reasonable cost, and took a surf lesson with Miguel. He was very patient and encouraging given my novice level. He also set up a tight rope for me to practice balance, muy tuanis. They make a great team and have an awesome oceanfront place with incredible views and sunsets. Highly recommended.
- Marçal (10/5): Beautiful experience - The location and how the camp blends with it are quite unique and fantastic. I believe I saw the best sunset of my life in here. Miguel and Pili are also very good. Miguel also taught me to surf! It's also very cool that everything is autosuficient. If I have to say something, that the water or electricity could run out during the night, or that the wifi coverage was a bit poor, but those are very minor things and justified due to the location and autosuficient nature of the camp.
- Ava (10/5): Exceptional - Miguel was extremely welcoming and kind. His property had so much character and love put into it. We stayed there two nights but wish it was longer. The area is so quiet and peaceful. Would 100% go back, we had the best time there! Nothing
- Taylor (10/5): the most authentic Costa Rican beach stay you can find - I showed up after I had booked another hostel in Manuel Antonio. It ended up being way too busy and loud as I was hoping for a very quiet, natural experience to Costa Rica.
I found Miguel’s place and it was exactly that.
Him, his wife and son are so kind. It was a true experience I will never forget. I shed a tear as I was leaving.
It’s very natural. Miguel built with his own two hands out of love. Each room has a bed and a net. You can hear the ocean, the birds and the coconuts dropping.
If you’re looking for an upscale hotel or air condition this is not for you. If you are looking to become one with nature and meet the kindest people and dogs this is for you.
The kitchen and common area is wonderful and open air. I was able to cook 3 meals a day.
Everyone is so friendly in the area. I recommend horseback riding with neighbor Tortuga. that I couldn’t live there forever
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Bill (9/5): Pura Vida - Miguel's is a great spot to enjoy the pura vida! It is right on a quiet beach with good waves for surfing. Its rustic charm might not appeal to everyone, but for me, it was perfect. The rooms were clean and adequate. You fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean. Miguel and his wife were lovely hosts. The surf lesson was great. I look forward to returning in the future! There wasn't anything I didn't like, really. I understand why it might not be the place for everyone, so know what kind of experience you want before booking. It is not a polished hotel or near any of the touristy nightlife. For me, it was as I expected and the exact experience I was looking for.
- Tijmen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Johannes (9/5): Conscious people offering a beautiful experience. - Simple, efficient, beautiful
- Lara (10/5): Exceptional - Incredibly friendly owners. Facilities are basic/rustic but clean and neat. You essentially have your own massive private beach with incredible sunsets, which is wonderful considering how touristy all the other beaches in the area are. Would definitely come back. Just an FYI - the dirt road to reach the property can be tricky in places, drive slowly if you don’t have a 4x4
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional - Miguel and his partner are fabulous hosts, and we all had a great time.
- Firešová (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place to stay and surf! It's right on the beach without crowds of people and Miguel is great surf teacher. The accomodation is simple but really cool, perfect for adventurous people 😎
- Nadine (6/5): Messy - It’s right at the beach It’s very difficult to get there (by car or by foot). The place is nice and right at the beach but it’s also very messy. The cabins are nice but the mosquito-nets have no purpose because there are wholes everywhere
- Eve (10/5): Exceptional - When you like adventure and the time in wild nature and beautiful beach , this place is for you . Miguel is good surfing teacher too. 2 km road is not good. You need good car
- Ethan (9/5): Superb -
- Rebecca (9/5): Miguel’s surf camp is a very unique hideout. Basic living on a very quiet beach. We stayed 3 nights and loved it! -
- Alzbeta (8/5): Very good -
- Rorocav (10/5): Exceptional - Real paradise if you are looking for simplicity and chilling stay :)
Buy food before coming as it is far away from the city center.
- Maria (8/5): It was very convenient for a one night stay to a visit of the national park and as a bonus Miguel helped us catch a tour - On the beach. Got to visit turtle conservation program nearby and was able to participate in turtle release. Surf lessons available. Near Manuel Antonio National Park. Miguel is super friendly. He makes his own furniture so there’s this special feel of a very simple life. Didn’t really have seating for the beach.
- Nina (10/5): Lovely place, lovely family and lovely surf! - The atmosphere here is warm and true. I loved staying at Miguel Surf Camp, it's different from the rest of Costa Rica. If you want to get in touch with a Tico family, this is the place ti be! Miguel and his family are lovely and thanks to Miguel's lesson my surf has improved a lot! It's not easy to reach the town, but it has been fun to experience a little bit of wilderness staying right in front of the beach and Miguel has always been very helpful taking me to the town when I needed.
- Forrest (10/5): Exceptional - Truly unique adventure Getting there takes some effort, but well worth it.
- Josef (10/5): Exceptional - Awesome hosts with fantastic location
- Cynthia (8/5): Definitely will return! Miguel so friendly and picked me up from airport - On ocean and totally in nature! Great WiFi. Very peaceful and if you love surfing, then no crowds Went in rainy season so muddy
- Moya (10/5): Wonderfully rustic beach shack - A truly immersive experience - Location was wonderful, right on the beach
It was a rustic immersive experience with basic rooms but all the better for it
Miguel gave us a fabulous surf lesson
The dogs were adorable and Miguel was charming, chatty and really passionate about being self sustainable
Plenty of hot water in the outdoor shower It was hard to get anything dry (not their fault!)
The road in needed a 4x4, but it was an adventure!
- Jules (5/5): Passable -
- Magali (7/5): Nice remote getaway - Off grid simple ticos style cabanas completly handmade by Miguel, the host. Perfect location for chilling , a beach day or surfing. Beach for yourself just by the property, great waves, great sunset. Located in a fishermen village El Cocal basic groceries in the village. Access with 4x4 only via a small path before Quepos or by foot via the ferry deck in Quepos (250 colones one way pp) and then 20 min walk in the village to Miguel’s house or by taxi (2000 colones one way). We left our car at the Gustavo parque (ferry parking) (3000 colones per day), Gustavo the parking owner is really nice! Remote area to immerse yourself in a tico life for a couple of days. Access to the property is only with a good 4x4 and some driving experience, very tricky especially during the rainy season.
- Rolland (10/5): Exceptional - The host was really nice with us, he organized a pizza party for the birthday of one of the guest.
- Marc (9/5): Awesome place to stay by the ocean. - Awesome place by the ocean.
- Vincent (10/5): Exceptional - Place IS Amazing
- Leoni (10/5): Accommodation with a special vibe. - The accommodation as a whole, as well as Miguel his wife and son were just exceptionally good. One immediately felt at home and was warmly welcomed! The accommodation itself was kept minimalist, but you had everything you needed. Who expects a luxury accommodation is here out of place, the accommodation shines with its natural charm and the general positive mood.
We totally enjoyed the time, relaxed a lot and the surf lessons were great too!
Thanks again, it was really a great time! 😍 Nothing.
