• Sarah (8/5): Rustic charm, friendly people and Laura at the new cafe in town is divine! - We liked the property, eight gorgeous chickens met us eagerly when we arrived! Vic was so friendly. The room was rustic and very comfortable and very roomy which I wasn't expecting. It suited our needs perfectly! The pub was just up the way and the caves were around the corner...I would recommend this property to all and the caves are next level! Nothing...everything was great!

• Robyn (7/5): Quiet setting. - Modern rooms - tastefully decorated. Quiet location. No one was available at booking in and no messages were sent to advise about the procedure. It was difficult to get the TV to play local channels but staff happily came to the rescue. Unfortunately, a different staff member trying to be helpful, gave wrong information about meal availability locally. Also no power point in the bathroom was a little strange.

• Brian (9/5): - Short walk to town centre. Property backed onto Buchan river. Quiet scenic area of township. Recently opened cafe with breakfast menu and choice of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Comfortable rooms with strong water pressure for shower facilities. Not a deal breaker but bathroom vanity shelving a little too high.

• Sui Ling (9/5): It was a peaceful, relaxing place to stay. - Very quiet and peaceful area. It was beautiful to go on a walk around the property if you love birds, flowers, fruits trees and the riverside. We loved to sit in the backyard after the dark, as the view of many stars in the sky was mesmerising. That was awesome. Limit options for restaurants nearby.

• Piers (10/5): Amazing accommodation set in a stunning landscape - Amazingly friendly staff, authentic and down to earth. Rooms were so spacious and clean, and the pride that was taken to maintain the property was evident. A hidden gem! We'll be back for sure. Nothing.

• Jesslyn (6/5): It was ok. - Room was easy to heat with the oil column heater provided. Bathroom sink was made for tall people, it was set so far into the countertop that I had to stand on tip toe just to be able to spit into the sink.

Not too far from the caves and the owner was lovely. Totally recommend I liked the room very much but if I was to say anything, maybe some of the power points were in the wrong spots which probably couldn’t be helped

• Martin (8/5): Location was excellent, but the little extras of microwave, and sufficient tableware were missing. - The staff member I met was friendly, the room was very well presented. The bathroom was renovated. Nice dining room table with plenty of chairs for breakfast or takeaway. Nowadays we are used to having a Microwave included with the Breakfast facilities of Kettle and Toaster. The Microwave is useful for heating milk for breakfast or for heating a takeaway meal in the evening. Buchan has limited eating facilities, a $25 Burger at the Bistro or a meal at the Hotel which stops serving early in the evening. If you arrive after 6pm it is likely that you would bring your own meal, so some dinner plates and sufficient cutlery would be a very beneficial addition.

• Cathy (8/5): Buchan is a lovely holiday destination and the The River Retreat is an upscale place you can stay. - Delightful location, enjoyed the chooks and other birdlife, and the garden. Quality of the room and fittings was excellent and good hot water supply. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. A microwave would have made some meals easier. Dishwashing liquid and tea towel would have been good for tidying up after breakfast and snacks for our multi-day stay. Hanging space for clothes was a bit limited.

The location is breathtaking, surrounded by stunning natural scenery and the peaceful sound of the river—perfect for a relaxing getaway. The accommodation itself was spotless, cozy, and well-equipped with everything I needed. The bed was comfortable, and the attention to detail in the décor made it feel warm and inviting. One of the highlights was being able to explore the area and enjoy the peaceful area —it’s an ideal spot for unwinding and reconnecting with nature. It’s also conveniently located near Buchan Caves, making it great for exploring the area. The hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming, offering helpful local tips and ensuring I had everything I needed during my stay. I highly recommend The River Retreat to anyone looking for a peaceful escape in a beautiful setting. I’m already looking forward to my next visit! Let me know if you’d like any changes!

• Justin (10/5): Beautiful location and extremely clean, bew bathroom and large space for a family - Very clean and they had extra treats. Very friendly staff and beautiful location 10/10. No air conditioner but the roof fan was great - also free electric car charging station around the corner in town.
