Guest Reviews
- Jerome (8/5): Accueil top, rapport qualité prix excellent. - Super accueil !
Cuisine commune
- Jennifer (8/5): - Close tot he beach, good outdoor area
- Eduardo (10/5): Ideal location, great value, plenty amenities, helpful staff - Centrally located in Hopkins, which I booked to be near the Garifuna cultural center. Very great value, plenty kitchen space, hammocks, helpful staff, accept (US) Visa payment, ample bathrooms and showers, solid wifi, comfy beds with a curtain provided, authentic restaurants/food spots and grocery stores nearby. The fans help during the day. Can't really think of anything, the place met all my basic needs for a hostel.

- Jennifer (10/5): - I stayed in the dorms and they had outlets, lights and mini fans by each bed. I slept well at night and they had a night guard on site after dark. The bathrooms were clean with warm water showers. They clearly make an effort to have sustainable practices - reusing gray water for toilets, solar hot water showers, a fill station for water bottles and recycling area.
The staff was helpful with a hostel overview and recommendations for the town. Loved my stay!

- Thomas (8/5): Nettes Hostel - Nettes Hostel in sehr guter Lage. Hatten eine kleine Cabana, was optimal war. Personal unterschiedlich freundlich und motiviert.
- Karen (10/5): - Helpful staff cute Place comfy sleeping
- Reed (8/5): A fun and funky good time! - The location was excellent and I found the staff quite welcoming and friendly. I would definitely recommend to other travelers. I did not like the fact that there was no bathroom in the dorm rooms. The toilets and showers were right next to the dorms but still, you had to go outside to get to them.
- Anna (7/5): Great if your there for couple nights but longer term you start to miss sleep. - Clean, nice covered area and kitchen. Close to stores and shops as well as a 2 min walk to beach. And it’s a great location for the beach.
Staff were friendly. Bathrooms were good, shower was large. Rooms were clean and beds comfy. Noisy. Late at night you can hear people talking in main area. Someone was rustling bottles late at night and some guests did not sleep. They chatted all night. You can hear everything including the traffic and people.
People were allowed to smoke in the main area and for those who don’t it was quite unpleasant when trying to enjoy your food and someone is smoking right beside you. People rip by early in the morning like 3-5am on their motorcycles or vehicles.

- Ralf (9/5): -
- Frans (7/5): Decent place in heart of town - -Great location right in the center near the bus stop
-Staff were helpful and provided good information
-Kind of a cool design with nice common area
-the only hostel between San Ignacio/Belize City/Placencia as far as I’m aware, so it opens up an interesting part of the country to budget travel -Not too clean and quite a lot of insects in dorms
-Shower water ranges between cold and lukewarm
-The place is in need of a refresh
-clumpy pillows
-less good value than average for Belize
- Max Bolsen (5/5): - 5% additional comission if you pay by card
Only cold water in the shower
- Ashton (8/5): -
- Petty Von der Saar (3/5): - Some of the staff is very kind and helpful. I loved the free light cinnamon coffee in the morning! Super old and not well maintained. The mattress was so worn out and crooked that I was almost rolling down while sleeping. It was raining inside the bathrooms and there was no way to get in any dry way to the washing rooms when it was raining. The internet was quite unstable (maybe rather a regional problem than the hostel's error). No breakfast offers.
- Brigitte (10/5): - Emplacement et cadre sympa

- JimmyC (7/5): Expensive for what it is. - A very relaxing place to unwind. The kitchen is well serviced with cooking utensils and a fridge for your food. Great hammock area to relax. A selection of books to choose from. The owner provides some great advice for things to do and see with recommendations. Coffee was provided in the morning which was nice. If you rely on wifi connection, do not stay here. The owners use a cheap provider and it goes down frequently and when it is working, the speeds are slow. I walked up the road to Ella's Restaurant where the wifi was perfect. The dorm is beside the front road, the walls have no insulation and it is very noisy. The hot water is solar. If you have days of cloud cover, there is no hot water.
- Daisy (2/5): -
- Fahad (1/5): On its way out - Great central location easy to access. Friendly owner who was happy to chat and point out where to eat. Tired and neglected, the funky dodo is currently being in the process of being sold. There were cobwebs on the bunk beds, fans clogged with dust. The bathroom and toilet seemed pretty tired.
- Luke (5/5): - Location is fine Very basic facilities, bathrooms were dirty, room had no A/C (not everywhere does so this is understandable), staff were not very interested, had to pay for drinking water. Not good value for money - it is too expensive for what it is. If the price was cheaper, it would be easier to accept this basic accommodation.
- hélène (9/5): - Proximité de la plage
Proximité de l'arrêt de bus
Extérieur, cour intérieure
Cuisine à dispo
- Arnaud (5/5): - Bon emplacement
- Franky (3/5): This wasn't a place where we felt welcome. - We booked two nights. Because there was no Wi-Fi from the first evening and it wasn't fixed the next morning, we asked to cancel the second night. I need internet for work. The owner refused to refund that night, citing a policy she made up herself. If you advertise Wi-Fi as one of the highlights on booking.com, you should be able to deliver. That feels unfair. The same goes for the fee you have to pay for filtered water and to pay by credit card.
- Dominic (9/5): Funky hostel great location - Lots of space to chill in hammocks and other seating
- Ed (9/5): Recommend! - Nice facilities, coffee, friendly staff, comfortable room. Nothing
- Richards (10/5): Funky Dodo Hostel – A Hidden Gem on the Caribbean Coast! - I had only planned to stay at Funky Dodo Backpackers Hostel for one night, but ended up staying an entire week – and I’m so glad I did! From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the incredible team: Anna, Alison and Lorraine. Their genuine hospitality and friendly vibe made it a joy to stay there, and there was none of that sterile atmosphere you get with some hostels.
The staff went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. They were also incredibly knowledgeable and approachable and gave me great advice on things to do in the local area and beyond, and even helped me plan onward travel for the next leg of my journey.
I stayed in a large family room with an ensuite bathroom at the back of the hostel. It was immaculately clean, spacious, and quiet. The room included a comfortable double bed and two bunk beds, perfect for groups or solo travelers who enjoy extra space and privacy.
I also noticed that the communal showers and toilets were cleaned frequently and kept in great condition.
Another reason to stay at the Funky Dodo is its perfect location—right in the heart of Hopkins Village. The beach is just a one-minute walk away, making it incredibly convenient for daily swims and sunset strolls. Plus, the beach area is lined with a variety of great restaurants and bars, offering plenty of dining options. The local supermarket is literally a 30 second walk away.
The communal facilities are excellent. The common area is relaxed and welcoming with lots of benches, hammocks and tables . It is also spotlessly maintained, and well-equipped with two refrigerators, a microwave, gas stove, and a coffee machine – everything you need to feel at home (oh and there is free coffee in the mornings). There is also a beautiful roof top terrace that is worth checking out and is quiet too.
My only regret was that I didn’t spend longer! Funky Dodo, thank you for an unforgettable stay. Everything was great..
- Shal (9/5): Superb -
- Jean-gabriel (9/5): Superb - I liked the hamacs, the open kitchen with lots of equipment to use, the fans in the bed…
- Arnold (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gemma (7/5): Affordable accomodation - The showers were quite big, with hooks for your clothes and a shelf to put your toiletries. The toilets and showers were cleaned frequently. Hostel staff wasn’t the friendliest although they help you with a straight face. The place to put my belongings was full of dry lentils from previous person I suppose and it could have been cleaned. The rooms had no air con.
- Caoimhe (8/5): Very good - Good kitchen, good location, staff are so friendly! And they have a beautiful cat names Fritz! Very comfortable bed with a fan. For what you got it, I’m more used to spending around £10 for the dorm…. But we were in Belize I guess lol
- Deisinger (7/5): For half the amount of the price I would recommend it - A nice hostel with a good location, very quiet at night The value for money was not worth it. And you had to pay extra to get drinkable water
- Salado (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kaitlyn (7/5): Good -
- Clothilde (7/5): Decent budget option, but could be improved - -Clean rooms and common areas
- Close to the beach
- Equipped kitchen and fridge
- Youth Hostel vibe - Lots of sandflies in common areas
- No WiFi in rooms (had to use the WiFi from nearby restaurant Coconut Husk)
- Unhelpful staff
- Loud fans and no AC so it gets hot at night
- No hot water (warm water at best)
- Nicola (10/5): Exceptional -
- France (9/5): Inviting and relaxing space - The room was clean with art on the wall. The space is lovely, inviting, and comfortable. The beach is very near.
- Jefferson (9/5): Superb - Such marvelous vibes at this hostel. Amazing location right in the middle of Hopkins - and a literally 1 minute walk out the back gate to a nice beach. Helpful owner who gave us recommendations and also was generous with some medicine for my boyfriend (who was in pain). Adorable private room with a big fan and comfortable beds. Great common area in the middle with chairs, hammocks, a kitchen to use, and lots of books to peruse. Phenomenal. Shower could've been hotter I guess? No complaints otherwise - loved it.
- Brian (4/5): Disappointing -
- Carol (8/5): Funky Dodo was my first hostel. (I’m 86.) I’d do it again! - Shady garden, morning coffee, friendly staff (with one exception), location, clean, comfortable beds Could have used more comfortable seating for reading, lounging. Some guests didn’t clean up after themselves in the kitchen but I don’t know that could be changed.
- Sophie (6/5): Pleasant - The private room was nice, even though it was a bit small. Everything was clean. We didnt like the vibe. There were a lot of old people hanging around the hostel all day. Also, the facilities are very basic. We've slept at places in Belize that had much better facilities and had the same price as this hostel.
- Rebecca (8/5): Very good -
- Anna (7/5): Great vibe and location, needs a bit of TLC and some customer service training! - It’s a lovely vibe with hammocks everywhere and a clean kitchen and shared bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the bunks were very high (with great steps up) and substantial so you weren’t too bothered by others fidgeting! Some of the staff could do with cracking a smile every now and then (except Alison who was very friendly!), but they were helpful albeit reluctantly.
The whole place needs a good lick of paint. It’s tired and some things are broken eg the locks for your padlock to go on the larger drawers. There are a few simple maintenance jobs plus a coat of paint which would bring this place up to its full glory!
- Rik (9/5): Coast stop on route from BC to PG - The room was spacious, quiet and clean. The bed was comfortable. Kitchen area was good. Plenty of outside space. Coffee and water available. Information board handy and close to food options and ATM. Easy to hitch a lift to most places from the junction but bus routes at main junction if you needed. Taxi option too if that's your thing. Some decent hikes not too far away. All in all a pleasant stay. All good😁
- Clare (10/5): Best place to stay in Hopkins - Well set out hostel - clean rooms comfy beds good kitchen - right in the heart of Hopkins with easy access to the beach . Nothing
- Gamache (9/5): Superb - I missed not having a hot or even warm shower and more hammocks would have been nice or cushions for the chaise lounges
- Tammie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dian (8/5): Very good - Great hostel social scene, good kitchen, great location Bed was meh ,fan was very loud, expensive for shared bathroom
- Nanette (9/5): Superb -
- Pauly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kristi (10/5): Relaxed, refreshed, peaceful and seeing things with a new perspective. - I loved my stay at, The Funky Dodo. The town of Hopkins is laidback and friendly.
- Anna (7/5): Enjoyed our stay here. - Very nice atmosphere. Gave us a really useful number of a local taxi guy which we appreciated!
Staff were nice and helpful.
Very good value for money and felt safe. The place is very dated and needs to either be sold, or fully gutted and refurbished, it has a dilapidated feel.
- Stefan (8/5): Would definitely stay again - Its Nice atmosphere, the room was comfortable, the bed was comfortable, the kitchen was nice to use,
One huge plus was the friendly cat There were a few bugs, but that's to be expected
And most of the time, no hot water
- Sacha (9/5): Superb -
- Rachel (2/5): Very poor - It was a great location, and all of the staff were friendly and helpful. The main guy/think the owner was initially very rude and grumpy., he did warm up and then gave some useful information. The places for sale, maybe he has just had enough of customers asking questions! It was NOT CLEAN. I Did not observe the kitchen being cleaned all the fridge being cleared out. The bathroom and toilets were eventually cleaned and toilet paper emptied from the bins when staff were informed none of the toilets were flushing, they were filled with the vomit and poo. A number of the residence had some kind of a sickness bug, I believe this was likely from the hostel. As my partner was ill and we had both eaten exactly the same things.
The place is just generally run down, mattresses need replacing as a sagging sheets not in great condition.
- Clara (8/5): I stayed 3 nights and really enjoyed it. Had a good time just relaxing in the hostel or by the beach with the people. It - Kitchen was a social spot, hostel is not too big, close to beach, very nice people to be around, bar table around the kitchen Not enough hammocks, could have basic seasoning and oil and a bigger stovetop for cooking
- Jurgen (5/5): Close contact to other people, kitchen sharing , nearby Bus Stop @ grocery store. - The location was great. The walk to the beach was short. Nice layout of the community yard. The cleanliness and the facility showed its age.
- Sheryl (7/5): Expensive for just an ok place - Location. Owner was great, very helpful. Felt dirty everywhere, mattress was awful barely got any sleep for 3 nights. Just tired and run down Reception was extremely miserable.
- Eve (6/5): Pleasant -
- Veronica (6/5): Pleasant - Allison at front desk, location of room .location in town all the rules and signs
- Philipp (7/5): Pleasant experience, very nice bed just the cold shower was annoying - Free Coffee, cosy atmosphere, clean and equipped kitchen A lot of signs everywhere to remind you of the most basic hostel manners, I felt like they don’t trust people to think…No sun = no hot shower
- Karen (9/5): Amazing - cannot recommend enough! - The location is fantastic & the vibe is very chill. Beds in the dorms had plenty of storage space. The owners were amazing. They take guests comfort and safety very serious - they handled an incident with another guest absolutely superb. The matrass was a little old and not super comfortable.
- Alicia (9/5): Superb -
- Raxfei (9/5): Really good hostel next to the beach! - Weiche Betten, gut ausgestattete Küche, ultra nah zum Strand. Wirklich gut!
Soft beds, very well equipped kitchen, very close to the beach. Really good! Somewhat tight in the room, but thats okay.
Etwas eng im Dorm, aber okay.
- Larry (10/5): Wonderful and good value for the price - Everything was clean and well organized.
- Martin (7/5): Comfortable but fairly expensive rooms. - Comfortable rooms and nice communal courtyard. The hostel seems a little tired, with stained (but clean) sheets and some rusty/broken decorations in the communal area.
- Sara (7/5): Good -
- Andreas (8/5): Very good - Location, price, colorful design, size Double room was very small, limited accessibility by bus (runs only very rarely through Hopkins)
- Laura (9/5): Great stay - Very clean hostel with comfy beds. Staff were all lovely and really helpful. 30 second walk from the beach which was perfect! I extended another night because I liked it so much! No hot showers
- Emma (8/5): Very good - Location was good, beds were comfy No hot showers and the lady at the desk during checkin seemed like she didn't enjoy working there
- The (8/5): Very good -
