Guest Reviews
- Venkatesh (1/5): - When I went to check in, the property mentioned that the rooms were over booked by Booking.com and hence I could not check in and requested for a full refund. The property agreed that they will provide full return. Please process my refund ASAP. I was not the only one. There were 4 other families who had the same issue and had requested for refund.

- Ebony (1/5): Kindly avoid. This is a hostel at best everything was dirty - Location (close to 24 hr laundry) which you’ll need. Drunk or drugged female host. I reported this place as she said I’d had a male guest. There are cameras so this was a huge security concern for me. As I stated with a baby. Dirty sheets. Blocked sink. Alcohol left in bathroom. Musty smell. Young male claimed to be the owner - very disorganised.

- Miguel (10/5): - Felt very welcome and at home. It was my first time in New York and staying at the Macaw Guest House definitely made my New York experience the best. The neighborhood isn’t even scary like I’ve seen some reviews say. Yes it’s loud at times, so what, it’s New York. The subway wasn’t too far of a walk. The host are great people and I would definitely stay here again.
- Nin (6/5): It has potential to be a warm home away from home - Ry and Brian were really welcoming and nice, as well as the host Sonia to me the few times I met her. The rooms were cozy, I’m just a neat freak to specific things but it was nice There was some arguing within the family and the walls were thin so it wasn’t great to hear but I wasn’t exactly on vacation so it didn’t bother me much. It does get very cold though which was the only part. Ry and Brian were still very nice about it and addressed it well so it was a comfortable stay.
- Michael (10/5): Was perfect for the money and location, super close to upper east side - Sonia is amazing and goes above and beyond to help all her guests
- Cameron (4/5): -
- Nichita (10/5): Indimenticabile.
- Laurence (7/5): For a place to sleep on a business trip, it was fine. - Great location. Sonia very helpful and enthusiastic. Good value. Infrastructure shabby. One small towel provided for three days, no soap or shampoo in the shower, lock on my door didn’t work. A ‘rooming house’ vibe.

- michelle (4/5): Wouldn’t recommend - Room was small, datk and cold
- Ian (8/5): - Really nice and accommodating host. Lovely house with all necessary facilities.
Thank you
- Azaliia (10/5): - Very convenient location and welcoming hosts!!
- Felipe (1/5): No reserven acá.
- Bruno (8/5): Comfortable! - Overall a great stay at a great price with a great host! The rooms were small but that is to be expected in New York City.
- Karla (10/5): - It was a nice house It can improve on the bedroom maintenance
- Jason (7/5): Had a fantastic stay despite some quirks. Lovely time and would definitely book again - Really REALLY great location. Within 5 minute walking distance of Central Park and the MTA 103rd St station to catch the 6 train and Lexington Ave/E 102 St bus stop. Room has a large bed and a lamp, ceiling fan, A/C unit, and small wardrobe. Antonio was a great host! Communicable and friendly, they were very flexible with me and gave me some tips for my NYC stay. You probably won’t get a better price for a better location, especially if booking last minute. Great facilities in the communal areas including full kitchen, TV and living room, jacuzzi tub, and backyard garden/patio. Very close 3 minute walk to multiple restaurants and deli options on Lexington Ave. Charming neighborhood and architecture. I had a fantastic stay and would definitely stay again While I was in the bathroom one of the other hosts asked me (talking through the bathroom door) if they could open my room and show it to new guests- this was weird and I didn’t feel comfortable with it, but I said yes because I was stunned. It sounded like there was an accidental overbooking issue with one of the third-party online vendors and the new guests were meant to have my room that I was already booked into. There was also some yelling while I was checking out. Overall I still had a good time and I am confident that seasoned solo travelers will have a great stay here
- Obaidi (6/5): - It was in a nice place The staff was yelling at eachother outside the rooms at times
- osman erkan (1/5): -
- Yilmaz (10/5): - I liked how attentive the staff were! They made sure we had a great experience. We came with a car and they made sure we got a free parking space for our 3 day trip! Their kitchen was also fully stocked with condiments which wouldve been perfect if we were staying longer.
- Denise (9/5): Easy to find, high ceiling, well keeped, felt lived-in, - Close to Mt Sinai
Great ballaster
Didn’t get submerged on the 6 train
Bed comfortable
Needs a key drop off
- Marshall (1/5): - Nothing absolutely horrible Worst experience ever staff is super rude management hangs up on you if you need anything and don’t answer the phone wouldn’t recommend this place if it was the last place in NYC better off staying on the street then with them
- Alice (6/5): -
- Jolanta (1/5): Bad -
- Nadia (1/5): Don’t stay here party house - Nothing the host was so inappropriate I didn’t stay The host was extremely inappropriate very disrespectful wasn’t responsive with address was referencing inappropriate strip clubs. 5 black men in and out partying all night.
- Denise (8/5): A charming respite from NYC not far from the hospital. Very convenient to Dunkin’ in the morning. - I couldn’t have asked for a more convenient place to Mt. Sinai Hospital. It was perfect! The ambiance of the Macaw House is timeless with a welcoming TV area, large dining room and galley kitchen. Everything you could possible need to feel at home. My only complaint is that it could be cooler. The air coming in the window was nice and charming when I came home in the evening, but it was a little warm.
- Ghohabi (1/5): Not a safe place and comfortable environment. -
- Margaret (5/5): No ample parking, not quiet morning - Location They state free parking but it is parking on the street and you can’t park on one side during a certain part of the day, and the other sides were filled up for blocks. I looked for an hour then I went to a parking garage. (I even spoke to the owner about it and she was reassuring about parking, but that is not the case).
The day I went to check out I asked if I could stay in the shared space and if it was going to be quiet, because I had work to do. They reassured me it is quiet as people were not going to be there, however as I was conducting my work online on Zoom the owner was yelling at the employee while they were cleaning rooms. It went on for a long time. I had headphones and could only hope that my client could not hear it. They were on the second floor and it was so loud I heard it downstairs. It was disappointing. I quickly left after my zoom meeting.
- Sanchez (10/5): Exceptional -
- Varol (1/5): Bad - Unfortunately, there was nothing to like. Everything was very old and dirty. I was worried that there were insect fleas, I could not sleep. There was not even heating in the room. A complete disappointment unfortunately. I want at least half of the fee I paid to be refunded.
- Lukas (1/5): Stay away! - Convenient location close to subway and Central Park As I learnt later the safety line breaks around 96th street and yes I didn't feel safe in the neighborhood after dark. And I'm bloke 6'7'' tall. There was attempted break in to the property by a drunk fella who threatened the lady running the place that he's going to kill her son. There was a constant loud chatter till about 3am. After the sleepless night I decided to book a hotel downtown which I recommend to everyone who wants to stay in Manhattan and feel safe. One last thing: my room had an additional door connecting with other guest room. Zero sound insulation so I could hear every little sound coming from the next room. Thumbs down!
- Zil (9/5): Authentic New York experience, great location, Brian is a legend - Brian was great, gave us lots of info and was willing to help out with whatever we wanted (getting into bars or museums etc). Accommodation was clean and beds comfy enough. Come here for an authentic new York experience with real Manhattaners!
- Ted (10/5): Exceptional -
- Frederik (10/5): Memorable - It's a guest house, a family-owned business which is not as polished as a hotel but it makes it up with the charms of a personal approach and getting to live in a typical NY townhouse. The location is super nice too, it's just a few minutes away from central park. You can easily rent a bike or find a metro station nearby to explore the city. It's also often used by young doctors that come to work temporarily in the Sinai hospital next door. There is a nice shared space downstairs for you to sit and relax or to cook your own food if you want to.
- Wright (8/5): Very good -
- Gerardo (1/5): No more comments - Nothing nice about this place. Don't come Don't come
- Dimitri (7/5): Well located, easy check in, and an overall good value - Check in was easy and I liked that breakfast was provided Bed is lumpy and the room could be more beautoful
- Michael (9/5): Easy, inexpensive, good location. - Great location. Easy access. Private. Quiet. Heat was a little high for me and no thermostat in the room.
- Uteulieva (8/5): A welcoming, comfortable stay with great amenities and a friendly atmosphere—highly recommend! - The owner was very welcoming and took the time to connect with the guests, which made the experience feel warm and personal. One evening, she even organized a game night! She also made sure I had everything I needed and was happy to accommodate my special requests, which I appreciated.
The space itself was clean and well-kept. The kitchen had everything I needed for basic cooking—pots, pans, utensils, and a fridge. The common area with a TV was a nice spot to relax and chat with other guests.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a friendly and comfortable stay.
- Kristina (8/5): Small things to improve to make it perfect stay for this price - The place was very clean, location is great. Subway is just few steps away. Area seemed to be nice and safe. Guys who worked and met us there were very friendly Ppl who lives there need to regulate quiet hours. One of the guys who lives there was on phone on speaker until 3 am and woke up at 7 am called to same person and was talking on speaker again. That is very unfortunate for your guests, well headphones was invented long time ago. Other thing, if you make your place a place to stay for guests all personal problems and arguments needs to be solved before your guests will enter property. Otherwise all this arguments and yelling at each other very unprofessional and scares ppl who stays at your house. Thank you!
- Christian (2/5): not good - Cheap Amenities
- Mette (3/5): Poor - Located in Manhattan, which was nice as we came for the NY-Christmas experience. We could have done without the host couples private and very loud arguing and fighting during our last day and night.
The house is very loud and as a paying customer this was uncomfortable and also unprofessional.
We did not feel at all safe at that point and spend the night in our room as the common area was used as a private “fight zone”.
- Sullivan (6/5): It was OK - I had not understood the circumstance of the way the facility was run. My expectations were different. The shared bathroom situation. The difficulty in getting in at first.
- Maria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wright (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marius (9/5): Superb -
- Micxsky (3/5): The only positive thing is the good connection with the subway and the shared garden. - The location was good connected with the subway.
There is shared garden in the ground floor. The place was not cheap and we expetected something that was keeping up with how much we paid.
We arrived after the check in hours, which are quite shorts and we had to pay extra money (25$) to check in, eventhough it was a very normal time: 6:30-7pm.
As soon as we got in our room, it was smelly (like a wet dog kind of smell), which didn´t make the stay very enjoyble because the windows were not easy to open and also didn´t open completely, giving little room for the air to refresh.
The room was provided with no light but a small night stand lamp, which was broken and didn´t provide enough light for the room. Also, no trash bin nor closet was provided in the room.
During every hour of the day the area was very loud: the house is located next to a train railway meaning you hear every train that goes and for every I mean also the overnights trains, which are quite a few,
The guests were loud and were having music until 2-3am in the shared living room, meaning that if you room is located in the first floor you will hear a mix of trains passing by from outside and really loud music from downstairs: not the ideal when you are tired from a long visiting day around NY.
The shared restrooms were not very clean.
If we wanted to leave our luggage after the checkout time we also had to pay an extra.
- Guillermo (3/5): Poor -
- Mette (4/5): Very cold room. Like sleeping in the street - Very nice owner Very primitive room. Not even a chair to put your clothes on
- Paulina (10/5): We had a great time! - The location is exceptional!!
Great neighborhood. Comfy and just what you need when you are going to NYC
- Alejo (9/5): Perfect location - Location its the best part, near to the subway and the central park. the beds could be more comfortable, the bedrooms can improve.
- Ted (10/5): NYC Heaven! - I slept great in the cozy, friendly place that is located perfectly! Upper East Side has it all! I wish I could have stayed longer! I have family near by.
- Eva (1/5): It was terrible - Location was good. No breakfast or anything offered Actually I would like a full refund. Place was falling a part. Dirty. Toilet was not working. Advertised with private bathroom but didn’t have one. Owner was nowhere to find. No one was there to help
- Alvaro (4/5): Awful - Nothing. It was the worst experience in NYC I found hairs on my sheets. The bathroom had 2 doors, one of them was connected with the bathroom of other bedroom. Total disaster
- René (1/5): Bad - Easy to find the House and close to the public transportation. I didn't like the behavior of the owner, i was waiting outside , she never answer the phone. I was tired. The next day she asked me 20$ for the late check-in. It doesn't make sense. They smoke inside the house, crazy people. Never again
- David (4/5): Good value - Location Angry owner—free parking was not exactly free—-alternative side street parking typical of NYC uptown
- Kathleen (9/5): So fun! - Had a lovely time here. Made friends with the owner and she is lovely. Truly someone I would hang out with
- Andrea (10/5): Great place to stay - Great Hostess and location, so kind people, always willing to help
- Dorota (10/5): Exceptional -
- Charles (7/5): It was OK - Staff was very friendly. Ben was awesome extremely helpful very friendly personality. The room was extremely tiny. It could have fit in my whole bathroom. The bed was on the floor. Basically it was not all that comfortable, but I dealt with it when I booked the room it showed me a queen size room with all the amenities, but when I got there, it was totally differentcoffee pot or anything like that in the room
- Erik (10/5): Can’t wait to be back! - It was absolutely amazing. You get to experience the New York vibe 100%. The staff are the kindest people I’ve ever met. If you go to New York and want to stay in Manhattan this is the best place you could find.
- Edson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gabriel (1/5): Nightmarish stay. Had to leave and book somewhere else. Broken windows, exposed wires, cockroaches, filth everywhere an - Nothing The property is a huge SCAM. Not only is it unacceptably dirty. It is also unsafe and dangerous. No fire alarm in the room (had been removed). Unclean bathroom, with cockroaches. Broken ceiling and glass windows in the lobby/living room. Drunken owner at night in the jacuzzi, with partner shouting and running up and down the stairs. Owner is unresponsive on the app/platform… saying this is overpriced is generous. The place should be shut down.
- Hefty (9/5): Superb - Loved the communication and hospitality and the available amenities. Hosts were welcoming and friendly. We were given a tour and informed of everything we needed upfront. Other residents made it hard to sleep.
- Jenifer (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts of the property made us feel so welcomed into their home, we were able to hang out and have fun without any issues, I definitely recommend coming here and I would definitely be coming back.
- Chloe (1/5): Dirty, insects and bad smell - The localisation It was dirty, with big insects and an horrible smell. The bathroom had not been cleaned, the owner made lot of noise and were not flexible.
- Nicholas (9/5): Superb -
- Domino (10/5): Exceptional - Proprietor was very accommodating and went out of her way to provide good service and make sure we had everything we needed
- Nestegard (3/5): Poor - Location was good
Room clean Owner was on something when we arrived. Room not ready.
Woke up in the night of the owner running up and down stairs, screaming on phone.
Next morning the owners (man+wife) was fighting for hours. Screaming at eachother, insulting eachother. Felt very unstable and u safe, we booked a new hotel and left the second day.
- Daniel (3/5): Poor -
- Daisy (1/5): Do not even consider this place! - NOTHING, THIS IS WHY:
I am going to tell you my experience in case you are considering this place/trap to stay. I booked in this place the main room with a "private" bathroom to stay for 3 nights and spend my birthday with my daughter who was supposed to arrive from another state in the night.
I arrived at 3:00 pm and the room wasn't ready. I was so understanding because the owner wearing a jean and a hoodie (this is important), was the person who received me and also the person in charge of cleaning and putting together the place. I waited two hours for my room, but this was not the reason I had to run away before night.
This person (the owner) at first, was so nice and talkative in a normal manner. Once I was finally in my room (I locked the room), he suddenly entered to tell me that my bathroom was not ready but there was another in the hall in case I needed to use it. I noticed a change in the way he was acting and talking fast, incongruent, and agitated. I just wanted to take a shower and rest, so I headed to the bathroom in the hall. Once I was taking a shower, I heard a noise like someone was trying to enter. To my surprise, I saw the owner's arms in the space under the door like searching for something and telling me through the door something that I did not understand. That scared me a lot, but I thought that was a mistake and he did not notice that I was in there.
I came back to the room and tried to calm myself. The bathroom in my room had two doors, one that allowed access from outside and one from inside. For prevention, I put a lock in the door that permits access from outside and in my door. I was sleeping when this man entered like crazy through the bathroom door to my room wearing nothing but a boxer and a t-shirt, with a vacuum, and telling me that he had to clean quick the carpet. I jumped out of bed, ran to a corner, looked to the ground, begged him to leave, and said that it wasn't necessary to clean. CONTINUE ... ....He was repeating "I will give you a 20-dollar discount, no, no, 30 dollars, no, 40 dollars", and so on. When he left, I closed the door shaking and I started my search for another place to stay that night. I called family and friends to share this experience and they gave me the same advice: run, run, run out of this place.
While I was on the phone figuring out where to leave, this person entered the room again, dressed this time in jeans and a hoodie, and introduced me to his wife Sonia. I was too nervous even to speak. Ten minutes later they started a fight on the first floor, screaming, insulting each other, etc.
That was the last thing I heard from this couple. It was a nightmare.
Be aware of this: they are telling the people who left a bad review that they fired that employee or that problematic couple, but THEY ARE THE COUPLE. There's no employee to fire, IS THE OWNER that acted in the review like it was another person or another customer. They are the problematic owners who appear to have drug problems. If you have a doubt, READ the reviews.
PD: I lost a lot of money in one hotel room that night and for the short time for reschedule over again the trip, my daughter and I had to book a flight for the next day to leave N.Y. City.
- Mrazkova (1/5): Horrible - terrible. the owner was on drugs, tried to communicate but was out. He screamed and broke things at night. We were afraid and ran away in the morning. We do NOT recommend. The room wasn't clean And the bathroom was dirty. Booking should delete this accommodation, it Is not safe.
- Craig (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luis (10/5): Exceptional - It is a very nice place with a lot of amenities
Looking forward to come again soon
- Kat (1/5): My worst experience ever abroad. - Leaving. Horrible location, very dangerous. Cost me $50 in Uber to get there from Subway. Worst place to ever stay at. Owners smoke weed, do cocaine, drink and argue all the time. My first time in the U.S and they took advantage of me by demanding money ($80) so I could leave a parcel there for a day or two, which I had already pre-cleared with them days before yet they call me shouting abuse down the phone demanding money and proceeded to threaten to throw them on the street if I didn't pay up. Absolute criminals. Place should be shut down.
- Eric (10/5): Lovely - Sonia is a lovely host, she was caring and super funny.
Very thoughtful and welcoming. The room and the apartment were cozy. Hope to see ya again in the future :)
- Maryna (8/5): Very good - Hospitality and flexibility - it was important to make the best of the travel plans and sightseeing.
- Souraya (5/5): For a quick night okay be aware it is at the edge of Spanish Harlem - The people were very friendly and welcoming Everything else, the neighborhood is sketchy, the bed was terrible and the matras completely worn out!
- Yevhenii (1/5): Worst booking experience. - Alot of smoke. Noisy.
- Anonymous (2/5): the most horrible 4 days of my entire life - the location was good, close to downtown new york the owners were constantly arguing, it smelled, it's very expensive for what it's worth, there was a dirty , strange dog in one of the rooms
- Jose (7/5): Room for improvement. - Location: It has a great location!!! Cleanliness. The room had some dirty wipes in the nightstand, which was unacceptable.
- Ghizlane (1/5): Bad -
- Laia (3/5): We don’t want to repeat there - The personal is so nice We booked a room for 3, and when we arrived the room only have one bed. They put a supply bed that wasn’t comfortable.
The room smelled really bad.
When we asked, they told us that they will move us the next day. The following day, they told us that booking made a mistake. That we have a room with private room, and they don’t make us pay for us. It wasn’t our fault. And it’s not what we booked.
- Alessandro (5/5): Good location, please improve the comfort - Location was convenient and the room was adequate Overall comfort was not great, very noisy and could hear people screaming late at night
- Michiel (5/5): Just passable for necessary stay. - Close to where I had to be. Close to metro. Cheapest accommodation I could find in the area. Pay for 2star get 2 star, buy still ridiculously expensive. I did'n't expect much. Most dissapointing however was the noise, inside and outside. Owners seem to argue a lot and run up and down stairs in middle of the night. Also close to railway and lots of sirens.
- Darren (10/5): Highly recommended! - Everything! People who ran this guest house were really friendly. Place was really comfortable. Nice quiet location and really handy for 103rd Street Subway to take you downtown. When I come back to NY this would be my first choice place to stay at. No Negatives.
- Ayelet (1/5): Avoid - The check-in time is 3:00-5:00 pm - which is impossible. $20 charge for after 5 pm check-in. Ridiculous!
On the second night, when I came back, there was a fight and shouts between two men at the doorway, that frightened me terribly. One of them left, and the other one looked at me astonished as if he did not realize I was a guest in this place. I rushed to my room and locked the door, with utter fear! I only opened the door in the morning and rushed out of this mad house.
The house is literally a building away from the Metro North rail tracks. The noise is immense, quiet between 1-5 am.
The bathroom was dirty and grotty, disgusting to the level that I did not take a shower during my two-day stay. Only used the toilet.
The mattress is so overused, that it has a depression in the center so deep that I could hardly get up!
The room is painted grey, and so are the beddings - trying to hide the filth and the fact they do not change the sheets between customers?
The entrance area is nice, but dark even during the day, with a very weak lightbulb lighting a huge area. Feels horrible.
They changed the WiFi password every day, asking me "not to tell anyone in the building," repeating this twice.
My sincere advice - Booking.com should not work with such places.
- Maria (10/5): Top location and quiet - Relaxing and quiet, with a large kitchen, common area, and bathroom. Mid-town Manhattan can be reached within 10 minutes by car (except during rush hour). Supermarkets and restaurants are immediately close by. The staff is super friendly and available for all questions. Also 10 stars for cleanliness. I walked around barefoot and my soles didn't get dirty :) :) N/A
