Guest Reviews
- Cephas (6/5): Enjoyable - The location was superb & very close to the highway The shared washrooms were quiet old
- Chris (7/5): -
- Gabriel (9/5): - Lovely stay at the Federal. A warm, inviting old pub with kind and hospitable staff. If your expectations are correctly calibrated for a pub room in an old country pub, they will be exceeded. Very cozy and warm with a nice fire going in the corner of the bar when we walked in. Everyone was welcoming to us and to our dog, who also enjoyed the stay. My wife and I will be back. It's a pub room with shared bathrooms - these could use heating but I'm not sure how one would go about it in an energy efficient way especially with only a few guests staying.
- Mike (8/5): -
- John (8/5): Very comfortable room for traditional pub. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable about local area and took time to make sur - Friendly staff and value for money meals
- richard (8/5): -
- Achal (1/5): -
- Sureshkumar (9/5): A convenient and comfortable place - Good value for money
Owner was caring , advised not to rush through night to avoid animals and organised alternative key pick up for out of hour arrival I cannot complain anything for the money I paid
- Peter (8/5): -
- Anna (7/5): -
- Fran (6/5): Cheap (compared to the overpriced accommodation in the general are) friendly and comfortable - Great location. Really lovely staff. Very warmly welcomed by “Tooth” -an intelligent observant man masquerading as a knockabout bushie. A comfortable bed, albeit with a surprisingly eclectic range of items underneath it. Warm bar, fireplace an air of unpredictability about it. Not your franchised, plastic motel style of place, so if you go with an open mind, you’ll enjoy your stay. A bit difficult to access the outside area late at night if you’re travelling with a pet, and she needs to go out for a minute. Not the hotel’s fault though, and I appreciate that they allow pets at all. Exceptionally poor lighting. I’ve come across some dull lighting in my travels, but this is blue ribbon dingy. A little bedside lamp would fix the issue, and make it feel cosier.
- Gareth (10/5): Cost effective place to rest, with great ambience and service - Value for money. Great spot to have a sleep and everything you need.
Found a safe place for the (push) bikes for the night, and burger and beer were perfect after making our way riding from Canberra. Headed to Berties in the morning for a great breakfast and coffee.
All in all, it is a perfect cost-effective spot if you are looking for a place to rest after a day on a push bike.
- Holly (10/5): Cosy true blue - Friendly staff, a real Aussie country pub feel
- Karinna (10/5): Friendly locals and staff. I had a great meal accompanied by bush poetry - highly reccommend. - The friendly staff and the atmosphere. nothing
- Shoeb (7/5): It was a different experience will try again next winter - Place has a vintage touch. NA
- braiden (7/5): -
- Cameron (10/5): - Amazing customer service everyone was extremely nice absolutely awsome for the price
- Olivet (7/5): I had a peaceful stay. - The staff was nice and friendly.
The room was comfortably heated and bed nice and comfy.
There was parking for my car.
I loved the fridge in my room but wish each room had a microwave and basic tea things and cups. The bathroom bin was full and overflowing.
Toilet roll finished in one of the ladies toilet.
There was no blanket on the bed so I had to go find one around.
There were no cups to drink tea and the coffee area was very scanty with no much options. It was too cold to not have tea options.
- William (8/5): Very good -
- Cuervo (10/5): Great service, friendly staff, cozy rooms, delicious food, and a perfect location, felt just like home! - The service was amazing, everyone was super friendly. The style of the hotel is beautiful, it really made me feel at home. The food was delicious, and the rooms were super cozy and warm. The location is also perfect. Ohh and there is very good parking!! I honestly liked everything, there’s nothing I can say I didn’t like.
- Yenny (8/5): Very good -
- Thapa (8/5): Very good - Staff friendly n guides us around Bed
- Stephen (7/5): Nice food and bed, but very run down. - It’s cheap accommodation, the meals are cheap, the meals are nice. The rooms are very basic. The beds are very comfortable. I will be honest. The building is very old and apart from the fireplace in the very small dining area / public bar and the rooms where the low level heating need to be turned in 1 hour prior to going to bed…. The rest of the building is very cold indeed. The men’s shower toilet upstairs is as cold as the outside air… no heating at all and frankly too cold in winter to take a shower. And the bin in the male bathroom clearly hasn’t been emptied for a very long time. I am a bike rider and have stayed there twice, I am used to roughing it. It is not the sort of accommodation you would take a woman to impress her. I think I would rather pay an extra few dollars for something a little up market.
- Olly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ryan (8/5): Very good -
- Edward (1/5): Bad -
- Vanessa (7/5): Good - Staff were very friendly from the moment we checked in. Also very helpful and accommodating.
- Angus (5/5): Passable -
- Cherri (2/5): Very poor - This place has potential but we had a bad experience- not right for me to submit a review here I,ll talk to management about our particular problems
- Saffron (6/5): Pleasant - Friendly staff Ladies bathroom sink area hadn't been cleaned in a while. Our room was quite small and friends paid about the same and had a larger room. We ordered dinner and were told 20mins and got the meal 1 hour and 40 minutes later
- Lindsay (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ben (4/5): Come to town for cycles on the green which was awesome and at least the room was somewhere warm to sleep - Location was perfect Had an odd smell
- Karen (5/5): Passable -
- Bobby (3/5): Cheapest in town for a reason - Beer was ice cold. Showers were very dirty, having customers stay next to long term tenants not a good idea specially when the walls are paper thin.
Maybe consider some installing some airwick units throughout the property.
- Jeffrey (8/5): Very good -
- Jason (9/5): Superb -
- Craig (6/5): Pleasant -
- Lilian (8/5): Very good -
- Michal (7/5): Good - The pub is very old by Aussie standards and filled with character of the local sheep shearing industry.
You need to be ready for Aussie pub accom. If.you haven't stayed in such a place, you may not like it. Fair bathroom.
- Oscar (10/5): Exceptional - Toof and the other guy are a very interesting people, very friendly and helpfully, I love this place. I'm coming back soon. The place has history enough for a movie...
- Akhil (10/5): A memorable and a pleasurable stay. - Clean tidy quiet and most importantly very accomodating.
Excellent hospitality. We liked everything.
- Yule (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (5/5): It was ok. I wouldn't bring my family but I was after a cheap one-night option - and it did the job. - It met my needs in terms of price and location - being about an hour from Jindabyne. The barman/receptionist was pleasant and provided advice about the area and the food option - at the cafe down the street. The restaurant (mentioned online) either doesn't exist or is not staffed on weeknights? There were no food options available. I wasn't made aware of and wifi. The toilets were old and cold. This is an old pub - it doesn't have a lot of comfort but suits as "working man's accommodation" or similar.
- Nithin (7/5): Good -
- Rebecca (2/5): Fawlty Towers meets coldest pub in Australia! - We have 6 kids, and there was a good sized room with bunk beds to fit all the kids in. The owner was very friendly, and the caretaker at the property kept a fire going for us in the main room the whole time to dry out our snow gear each evening. The current reviews say you get what you pay for, but general cleaning and health requirements apply to all paid accommodation under Australian law. This was not the case.
The accom and facilities were not maintained the whole time we were there for a week! The rubbish didn’t get emptied once and was overflowing. The bathrooms were filthy, with ppl washing their dishes in the sink leaving food scraps and hair everywhere. I had to clean the showers and toilets myself before use, to ensure we didn’t get sick! Also had to ask for toilet paper, and no hand soap was provided.
The games longe was freezing cold, we had to ask for the fire to be lit the first and second day. The only cooking facilities are a microwave and kettle. You have to fill the kettle up in the filthy toilet sinks and also was up in the toilet sinks.
BYO toaster, washing liquid, tea towel, hand soap and disinfectant if you stay here!
- Dhungana (6/5): Pleasant -
- Alice (5/5): What you paid is what you get - Beautiful location The bed
- Lisa (4/5): Disappointing -
- Evan (9/5): Superb -
- Henrikus (5/5): Value for money - Not taken Nothing
- Jess (8/5): Amazing place to stay in an awesome town - One of the most unique and authentic places out there who still retained honest and genuine vibes from the owners of the place! Beds were super clean and comfy! I slept like a baby looking at the stars amongst the night and feeling glad that I was there!
Thank you so much for being the best host for a new comer to seeing a beautiful town! (The gig space looks absolutely awesome too! )
- Bruce (10/5): Exceptional -
- Markotsis (6/5): We got what we paid for. - No breakfast available. Told to fetch our own water for the kettle from the bathroom in the shared tea facilities. Cobwebs and dirty feeling of hall and shared areas
- Kim (8/5): Really great, kids were welcome too. Relaxed, clean and warm. - The host was really friendly and helpful.. so welcoming.
- Mcgregor (6/5): Pleasant - Was fine for a bed to sleep in for work Was comfortable, needs a tv in the room
Bathrooms were very dirty, needs a good scrub and mould removed
Room smelt bad, needs to be opened up and aired
Carpet was damp, and not cleaned,
- Brian (8/5): Very good -
- Donald (7/5): Very unusual but mmost enjoyable - He had a unique feel Nothing
- Kristy (7/5): Great value. - Friendly and helpful staff. Especially enjoyed the poem recitations.
- Fei (10/5): Exceptional -

- Charles (7/5): Good -
- Charles (7/5): Good -
- Kris (7/5): Good place to stay. Friendly country service with a smile. - Loved the location, staff were great , food was good and bed was comfy. A great old Aussie pub with plenty of cool memorabilia around and lots of interesting history. Plenty of parking.
- Justin (3/5): I would not recommend this place. - No security on your belongings whatsoever, the rooms do not have lockers and you have no way to secure any of your belongings. You can leave things with reception, however they have very limited hours.
Paid a $20 key deposit and had to checkout before reception, so my stay costed an extra $20.
- Josh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel121 (6/5): Pleasant - It is very basic, but excellent value for a place to crash for the night. A kettle and the makings for coffee/tea in the room would be a huge improvement, and wouldn't cost much. Having to go downstairs for a brew is pretty inconvenient.
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Mark (7/5): Welcoming old fashioned pub. Worth a beer and a stay. - Welcoming staff. Modest hotel, but comfortable and good service. Could do with a tidy up around the place.
- Romez87 (9/5): Superb -
- Gajan (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (7/5): Good - Priced well and clean, owners were welcoming as always. Nice pub style bar downstairs. Lack of loo paper in the men’s bathroom.
- Patrick (5/5): Passable - It is what you pay for
- Yule (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (7/5): Good -
- Antil (8/5): Very good -
- Gordon (7/5): Ideal budget stopover with traditional Aussie characters for travel between the snow and the coast. - Small traditional hotel, which is operated by some great local characters who are very knowledgeable about the local area and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Warm fire, food, cricket and traditional aussie poetry on request. Bathrooms need a little TLC and based on our stay the locals need to provide a little more support for what could be a local treasure.
- Charles (7/5): Cheap stop on the way to the snow - A very inexpensive option on the way to the snow. Very basic indeed, but better than paying three times as much in Canberra or Cooma, or 5 times as much in Jindabyne
- Matt (10/5): Fantastic basic but friendly country town pub with great people, and a warm bed. Loved it. - Kel the owner is friendly, accommodation is the most affordable in the snowy region - the food was great after a day at the snow and caretaker Tooth recited bush poetry to the kids' delight after dinner.
- Kreshi (9/5): Superb -
- Prasoon (10/5): Extremely good staff - The staff Kill and Tooth are such a nice people, they were very caring.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -

- Cameron (8/5): Very good -
- Rose (3/5): Poor -
- Mitchell (10/5): great place and people - cute service
- Jodi (6/5): Welcoming, Great community spirit - The hotel has alot of potential. Cal the owner is such genuine man and was helpful and kind Cal does it pretty much alone, with the aid of a good housekeeper the federal hotel has so much potential to be fantastic. The locals and Tooth are always helping Cal and it shows a great sense of community.
- P.j (7/5): Good - Beds were comfy.
Staff were great
Could park bikes under shelter
Could walk around small town
Food was cheap Couldn't open windows for air
