Guest Reviews
- Jacqueline (8/5): Great location in a beautiful city. - The location and it was quiet. People seemed to use our doorstep as a smoking area, leaving dirty ashtrays on the steps to out apartment. Also, it listed a terrace opening onto a courtyard, but that was a bit misleading. It was just the steps to our apartment next to the bathrooms for the restaurant and the laundry room.
- Rachel (9/5): - Very friendly host, great location and surprisingly quiet for being so central. The stairs to the bedroom are really steep - they're visible in the picture but just to mention they're not for people with movement constraints
- Donna (9/5): -
- Nick (8/5): -
- jean luc (6/5): Pour séjour court - Centre ville Cour en travaux . Pas d’espace détente dehors
- LAETITIA (7/5): - Very central, in the old city Very few equipments in the kitchen and all the exterior part was under renovation, which we didn't know about.
- Anthony (9/5): Great stay in a beautiful city - Great location to city centre
Self contained flat with cooking facilities
Owner very helpful
Very secure
Would definitely return
- Scott (9/5): -
- Nikhil Kumar (4/5): Cold and best avoided - The whole apartment was freezing, they had 1 air con which was pumping hot air for a whole 55m2 apartment which has 2 floors so certainly wasn’t enough and we had to sleep in 2 layers , socks and fleeces.
The apartment also obviously does not look anything like the pictures as its the off season but it certainly doesn’t define the price they are charging for the night
The location is amazing and everything is nearby and host was helpful in checking us in but we had a huge disappointment as we could not do anything in the house apart from staying in a blanket as floor, bathrooms , kitchen was super super cold
Even colder than outside probably
The blankets in 1 room is good and in the other its pretty light so its definitely not enough when temperatures in Dubrovnik are sub zero and below.
It should honestly be illegal to have this kind of apartment without heating because its just waiting for a disaster to happen. I cannot imagine little kids staying here
The staircase is steep too but we knew that before so its okay but even the showers were bad. The temperature is not hot enough and you might end up getting a cold showers at some point
I would suggest the host to just take the property off for the winter season or install proper heating so you do not freeze someone. Everything
- Kim (9/5): Nice location in city center. - Nice location. Close to everything. The flat is clean and comfortable. The stairs to the bedroom is a bit steep but nothing can be done about that. The water temperature in the shower can be a bit warmer if possible.
- Tegan (10/5): My partner and I went there for our one year anniversary and the host put rose petals on our bed and gave us some local - The Location was great! Super central to everywhere we needed to get to! And really easy to find. Nothing!
- Deb (7/5): Large apartment in excellent location - Excellent location, friendly host, large space. Host let us use laundry facilities. The stairs to the bedrooms was very steep and a bit scary. You must be extremely careful or you could really hurt yourself. There was a pretty unpleasant sewer smell.
- toni-marie (7/5): Ok for a short stay - This place is located right in the heart of the old town, which is very convenient. The accommodation itself is very basic - the second room was quite small and the overall feel a bit plain – but it was fine for one night. The apartment has extremely steep stairs, so we didn’t take our luggage up, and I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone with mobility issues. Otherwise, it was sufficient for a short stay.
- Hollie (8/5): -
- Chris (10/5): - Perfect location in the heart of old town, close to everything.
- Enrico (8/5): Solo positiva la posizione - Posizione molto comoda Le scale molto ripide e l’appartamento è ricavato da un soppalco
- Tom (7/5): Voldoende - De ruimte binnen appartement was top. De ligging in centrum oude stad. We konden onze koffers vroeger afgeven zodat we zorgeloos de stad in konden trekken De stijl wat ouderwets. Miste vooral natuurlijk licht. Altijd met kunstlicht. Geen prive terras zoals vermeld op site. Om 10u stipt dienden we vertrekken
- Harry (10/5): Very central in the old town but nice and quiet with the courtyard. Host was friendly and very responsive, would stay he -
- Lisa (7/5): Great location, nice and timely service, good price compared to surrounding area. - Superb location, right in the middle of the Old Town and not too many steps from the bottom floor A bit out dated property, and the toilet is open at the top so no proper privacy.
- Mardi Evans (7/5): Pleasant, comfortable with helpful, friendly staff - Good location if you want to stay within old town walls Perhaps a few more kitchen facilities and provisions. There was no tea bags, coffee satchels, milk, tea towels or cereal bowls.
Access to bedrooms had a challenging staircase which was difficult to negotiate with luggage and overnight toilet calls.
- Julie (9/5): Our stay at Old Town Garden Apartments - Well located apartment.
Maricel the caretaker is delightful and very helpful, especially with our luggage that didn't make the flight.
We were out when it came the next day and she received it for us and let us know that it had arrived.
The room is very light, so you tend to wake up with the first light...so maybe pack some eye peepers for sleeping!
We didn't eat at the attached Tapas bar, but it looked beautiful.
We ate at the nearby Soul Kitchen and that was lovely. We knew the staircase to the bedrooms is steep before we got there. It is steep!
I didn't take my bag upstairs as it was too hard, so I left it downstairs and went up and down for what I needed from it.
- Melissa (10/5): Excellent accommodation with excellent service. - Friendly accommodating staff. Right in the heart of Old Town. Had everything we needed for a short stay. We loved it all but the very steep staircase up to the bedrooms may not suit everyone. Just had to be very careful.
- David (9/5): Very comfortable and enjoyable - Very central and quiet Stairs were a bit steep
- Mark (8/5): Very good - Excellent central location. Very clean and comfortable. Good communication from the host. She told us via WhatsApp that it's actually No.8 halfway up the stairs from Soul Kitchen. Not No.6 as Booking.com info says! Cost!!!!!
- Julie (7/5): Great location, good price - The location was great, right in the heart of old town, and the staff was on site and
very helpful. The stairs to go up to the bedrooms were quite steep, and we were afraid we would fall in the night if we had to go down to the bathroom
- Siobhan (10/5): Very lovely stay, had everything we needed and the host was delightful and so helpful - thank you so much - Excellent location and such a friendly and welcoming host - thank you for your hospitality Maricel Very steep stairs but we were fine with this. If you have mobility issues, it would be hard.
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Debbie (10/5): Old Town with current facilities - location, friendly staff, resources in accomodation, kitchen, stairs. but that's a part of the city and not specific to this accomodation
- Lora (10/5): A gem in the centre of Dubrovnik - Everything about this apartment is wonderful. It's right in the centre of the old town so it's perfect for getting up early for shots of the city without all the tourists. Once you enter the main door it's like a secret garden and then a few more steps and you're at the apartment itself.
The 2 bedrooms are of good size, the beds were comfortable and had everything you needed. Personally it was a shame we only stayed 1 night as I loved it. There isn't a proper blind in the bedrooms, so bring an eye mask if you want to sleep in late. Also the bathroom door is frosted so be aware you may see more than you'd like if you're travelling with friends.
The stairs are steep but there is a handrail.
- Shannon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Simone (7/5): Good -
- Sophia (10/5): Amazing location and apartments - This property and the host were both amazing! The place was situation in an amazing location and the host was waiting at the door for to guide us to the right place. They were very polite and accommodating to an earlier check in. The apartment itself was clean and very comfortable with plenty of amenities! Would definitely stay here again!
- Deborah (9/5): Delightful stay in Dubrovnik - The location was superb. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. The steps up to the bedrooms are very steep.
- Sharon (6/5): Great location but really disliked the property - The best thing about this property is its location right in the old town, easy access to everything.
Maricel was great in helping us locate it and great in communicating.
We never met the host Ana that many of the other reviews mention.
The apartment is spacious enough and functional.
The wine bar outside is lovely, very peaceful I don’t normally have dislikes, I’m easy going but for this property we really did not enjoy it on the whole, other than location
These are the things that can be easily fixed:
-Provide tea towels in kitchen
- provide bowls (we wanted to use some for our cereal. We used the big tea cups instead)
-Provide coffee/filters so that machine can actually be used (as with all other places we’ve stayed in Croatia so far)
-Fix shower head to wall so you don’t have to hold in your hand
-Put sign on front door that it’s private/no entry so that customers of wine bar don’t confuse it for the toilet
- put sign up for actual toilet so that people can find it
-Fix the leaking roof -water came in with the rain on the top of the stairs
-Don’t let people smoke outside the door as it comes into the apartment
- fix the two broken dining chairs
Things that are harder to fix that we really disliked
-there is No natural light or air flow because if you open windows/blinds, there is no privacy due to people coming into wine bar and staff in kitchen outside. I felt really claustrophobic in this place.
-Steep staircase/ for me just too steep, it made me feel dizzy and I was afraid that I would fall if I came downstairs during the night to use the toilet. Therefore I decided to sleep on the sofa bed downstairs which luckily was very comfortable .
-very Low ceilings in bedrooms especially one of them - too claustrophobic for me so I was much happier downstairs on sofa bed
-because I slept downstairs as above, the Noise outside from staff and customers really bothered me. If you stay upstairs it’s probably not a problem
-Can’t dry clothes inside, nowhere to hang them -there is no air flow inside at all. Nothing can dry.
Though the place was advertised with a terrace , there isn’t one.
- Christina (9/5): Great quiet location in the heart of old town. - Excellent location, surprisingly quiet off an internal courtyard. AC only upstairs and impossible to cool down the downstairs or both bedrooms effectively. Stairs are steep!
- Nataliya (10/5): Perfect noght stay in Dubrovnik - Perfect location and facilities. Very cooperative staff Nothing
- Sue (9/5): Great location for a stay in old town - Great location really central - lovely staff and the wine bar is beautiful!
- Sean (8/5): Thoroughly enjoyable stay at Old Town Garden Apartments - We loved the location of the apartment as we were already within the Old Town and close to so many eating establishments and activities.
The air conditioning was super for a two storey apartment served by one aircon unit.
The bed was super comfortable.
WiFi was very good and useful in planning next day events/walks and keeping up to date with those at home.
It was quiet at night even though it was close to restaurants.
Our host, Maricel, was very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The main photograph showed a table and chairs in an open area setting, which we were looking forward to using when eating breakfast. There was no table and chairs available during our stay and this area was an access route to a wine bar (a very good wine bar which we used on the first evening).
The kitchen could have used a toaster, however, we did use the sandwich toaster which was slow.
Would have liked to have been able to place the shower at high level but had to hold the shower head with one hand.
- Morrison (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyed it. - The central location. The quietness and facilities. Better directions to find the place.
- Barbara (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jennifer (8/5): Very good -
- Geraldine (7/5): V central. - Location was great. Quite warm as only one air conditioner to cool both upstairs and downstairs. The internal stairs was unusual and steep. Location
- Brian (7/5): Good -
- Sue (10/5): Exceptional - Staff excellent. A beautiful and peaceful haven in the middle of a busy city. I would stay again
- Brett (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (9/5): When I come to Dubrovnik again, I will try to stay here again. It was excellent. - Loved the entry and close proximity to everything in Dubrovnik.
The owner and housekeeper were both very helpful and accommodating Bedrooms were on the second floor but the bathroom was on the first floor. The stairs were a bit steep so this was a mild inconvenience
- Tjalling (9/5): Comfortable quiet stay in the heart of the old town. - Great location right in the old town, and reasonably easy to access on foot. Nice quiet courtyard. Comfortable and spacious. We were allowed to store luggage before check-in; in fact the room was ready for us and we were welcomed in by 10 am. It would be nice to have some place to sit in the courtyard. Also, the entry door to the courtyard has a sign for their wine bar (M'arden, if I recall correctly) but not for the apartment, causing some initial concern whether we were in the right place upon arrival. Beware that there are some steps to climb (but nothing like the steps required to access many other places in the old town).
- Brett (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (10/5): A wonderful surprise, a piece of paradise in the heart of Dubrovnik, with a guardian angel - Once we had found the property, we 'phoned and were let in. The welcome was charming. And it was like stepping into paradise. The apartments are attached to a garden wine bar, M'arden, consisting of a beautiful terrace shaded by plane trees. It is an oasis of calm, green and cool in the middle of the tourist crowding, urban masonry and heat of Dubrovnik. The location is ideal, right in the old town. Ana Bitanga, who created M'arden, is a wine and food expert, a talented entrepreneur and dedicated restaurateur, and a warm and delightful hostess. She and M'arden are symbols of the rebirth of Dubrovnik from the destruction and sorrow of the 1991-5 Homeland War. The only niggle was that the apartment is a little old-fashioned and has very steep stairs leading up the bedrooms on the first floor. But plans are already laid to modernize the apartments - M'arden has only been going for 2 years, and the priority was the terrace. A tiny price to pay for such a lovely place to stay. Booking.com gives the address as Ulica od Domina 6, when it is in fact 8.
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional - The communication and helpfulness of Maricel was amazing. Our flight was delayed by 2 hrs, which meant that it was nearly 11pm when we checked in, way past the normal time. She kept in touch and reassured us that it would be no problem. When we did get to the old town, it was dark, and we had difficulty finding the entrance, so Maricel came and met us, to take us there. She was so friendly.
The apartment is in a beautiful place... unfortunately we were not able to make the most of the beautiful surroundings and the wine garden,as we had to check out next morning. It's in a beautiful location and very close to everything.
We also met Anna, who was so kind to allow us a glass of wine even thought the garden was closing.
After what had been a traumatic evening due to flight delays, was turned into a beautiful experience due to the beautiful Maricel and Anna. Its not a dislike...just depending on mobility the bedrooms are up a very steep and narrow stairs.
We didn't like we only had 1 night there.
- Kathleen (5/5): Lovely staff, strong cigarette smell in apartment - The property had a good size kitchen (which we didn’t use as we stayed one night).
The location was good.
The staff member who welcomed and helped us was fabulous! Can’t speak highly enough of her 😊 The property smelled very strongly of cigarette smoke, affecting our sleep. One person could not sleep in their bed upstairs due to this and had to go downstairs to sleep in the sofa.
The skylight window had to be open in the other bedroom for fresh air. Even the bed smelled of smoke.
The stairs to the two bedrooms, which are both upstairs, are very steep ( see photo). More like a wide-step ladder. Something to consider for people with mobility issues.
Also, around 35 steps from the street to the door of our apartment (but that’s Dubrovnik).
The shower head/hose did not have a hook so one had to hold it while showering and couldn’t stand under it. Adjusting the shower water temperature took a lot of time.
- Jodi (9/5): Super location, large space, would definitely stay there again - super location in the old city -- really excellent bathroom Navigating the very cool stairs up to the bedroom could be a little tricky for someone with mobility issues
- Beth (7/5): Good - Very nice local manager. Great location. The stairs to the bedroom were actually very dangerous. They were extremely steep.
- Adrianna (9/5): Excellent location and very friendly hosts. - Great location, everything just walking distance and very friendly hosts. Nice and quiet. Steep stairs, but we new about it before booking.
- Martin (10/5): Warm and welcoming. We would definitely book again. - We had a wonderful stay at the apartment and warm welcome from Maricel who made us feel immediately at home.
Peter, Ana, Niko, Ante and the rest of the staff at the beautiful M’arden garden restaurant all made us feel part of the family as well.
I think we honestly made the right decision to book.
The location was perfect for my wife and I to explore the wonderful city of Debrovnik, which is steeped in history and visually stunning.
The apartment itself was spotless and had all we needed for our visit with the option of two bedrooms.
But the thing that made it for us was the wonderful welcome and kind generosity of Maricel and the M’arden family.
- Mary (8/5): Very good - Staff very friendly and helpful Stairs very steep fine for us but not for older people or children
- Hughes. (10/5): Exceptional -
- Meredith (8/5): Very good - The location was fabulous. The list of places to eat etc from host was phenomenal. Maricel was wonderful, got us some milk for when we arrived, showed us how to use the washing machine The stairs to the bedrooms!
- Alexa (3/5): Disappointing. Photos on website misrepresent setting. - Not much. The photos completely misrepresented the outdoor space attached to the apartment. The biggest disappointment was the smell coming from the drying laundry just below and the was airlessness inland slightly bad smell n the apartment as a result. Little finesse with the decor. Very basic. Guests from the wine bar mistake the front door for the toilet when ushered in the direction - no signage for the toilet as they leave. The disappointment ruined our last night on holiday. I can not recommend. All apartments on the old town ate well located. Dubrovnik is beautiful but I recommend elsewhere for the money - there is no table in the outdoor space and what you see is a thoroughfare for a wine bar, it is not a garden.
- Dija (8/5): Lovely stay, in the heart of the old town with beautiful views from terrace. - Perfect location, beautiful terrace - will be even nicer when the wine bar opens soon. Peter and Maricel were really lovely and Mochi the cat! The apartment itself is dated which they’re aware of and have plans to upgrade over the next few years. Beds were really comfy and unless you plan on spending a lot of time inside (why would you?) I’d highly recommend. No way of attaching the shower head to the wall - minor detail but in the interim before you upgrade would be a quick fix.
- Anny (10/5): Modern space in great location. - There was good space for storing everything, the bed and pillows were super comfortable, there was central heat and air, although we never needed to use it, because there was plenty of ventilation. It is only about 21 steps up from the basic entrance level to the city, which made it very easy to get our luggage there. The shower was great, the location was amazing, and the hostess was over the top nice and accommodating. I believe she is on site, so we didn’t have to wait for anyone to let us in. She was standing at the door smiling at us as we came up the steps. I think the address might be wrong though, since our information said number six, and it was actually eight. Since it’s such a long way down to the bathroom and kitchen, it would’ve been nice to have a trash can in each of the bedrooms. It was also lacking a kitchen towel and a drain rack.
- Deb (9/5): Prime location in the very heart of the Old Town. Maricel offered FANTASTIC service - Best location ever, right in one of the central alleys. Great stock of supplies - toiletries, tea bags etc. Well set up kitchen. Super clean. Highlight was the superb service from Maricel. She even helped with my bags and walked me to Pile and advised on buses, Uber etc There are a couple of small things in the apartment but I know there are big renovations planned shortly and these will be addressed then
- Yu (9/5): Superb - Friendly staff, great location, clean No shower head holder, clothes do not dry easily indoors
- Stephen (7/5): Short but sweet. Great location. Property could do with some up keep - Location in the Old Town was perfect The property is a little dated. Needs some up keep
- Charlotte (6/5): Ana was easy to communicate with and offered many suggestions for restaurants etc. the location cannot be beat, unfortun - Location Strong cleaning supply smell, very steep, ladder-like stairs to two bedrooms. No headroom over one bed. Limited supplies -only one glass in kitchen for example, no hand soap in bathroom
- Zoran (7/5): Good -
- M. (9/5): Easily recommend the property. - As so many others have mentioned, Ana the host was delightful. Very professional, knowledgeable and happy to share her insights. Stairs to upper floor tricky, especially at night to use the toilet on the main floor.
- Kaya (9/5): Wonderful apartment location and the host was so helpful and sweet - Location, wine bar and host
- Suzanne (9/5): Great location, great hostess. Convenient to everything - Anna was very friendly, helpful and had a relaxed easygoing attitude that made our stay extremely enjoyable. The lovely wine bar outside was wonderful !! We would love to return N/a
- Melinda (10/5): We felt so at home. The wine bar they have built far surpasses other bars within the walls with a beautiful outlook and - Location was unbearable. It was quaint and quiet and very clean. Ana, our host was amazing. Everything was fine
- Joanna (9/5): Right in the heart of the city - Great location. Friendly host, ability to store luggage. We received lots of helpful tips and recommendations for exploring the city. The room itself was a bit dark, but that may be expected from the location type. Stairs to bedrooms can be challenging for less fit guests.
- Denise (8/5): Very good - Friendly staff
Clean Very hard to find
- Sebas_vg (10/5): Exceptional - Big place and the guest was so kind.
- Patrick (8/5): Very good -
- Marti (10/5): I would highly recommend staying here. The appartment is perfect and the owner is wonderful person. - Location was perfect. The onsite wine bar was awesome, with great wines and exceptional service.
- Kirsten (10/5): A fabulous little spot in old town with not too many steps to get your luggage up! - Great location in old town. The steps up to the bedroom are very steep.
- Milly (9/5): Very much enjoyed our stay - Excellent location within the old town walls. Restaurant downstairs also excellent. The very steep stairs up to the bedrooms a challenge.
A little confusion of the street number
- Lindsay (8/5): Good communication with owner. - Central location Stairs to bedroom would be challenging for a billy goat…almost vertical. Bed mattress and pillows could do with replacement. No washing machine.
- Alyson (9/5): Fabulous hidden gem - Great location, central but hidden away. Our host Ana really made our stay. Loads of suggestions of where to go nearby and the courtyard is now a beautiful wine bar with fabulous local wines The stairs are a bit tricky but we were expecting that and it didn’t impact our stay
- Vidar (7/5): Good -
- Sandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caitlín (10/5): Gem of an apartment - Brilliant location in the old town. Wonderful , friendly helpful hosts. Great value for money. Family restaurant was incredible also! Cant recommend this enough! Thank you again! Just be mindful when using the stairs up to bedroom as they can be steep.
- Katie (9/5): Superb -
- Walter (10/5): It was magnificent -
- Kitty (10/5): Would thoroughly recommend this property for a short stay in Dubrovnik. Especially lovely now that the host has opened a - Excellent location and wonderful host.
- Philippa (7/5): Great choice and Ana very helpful - Location excellent and very quiet
- María (8/5): Very good - The stairs to the bedrooms were very steep.
- Harsh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (9/5): We really enjoyed our stay and Ana was extremely helpful. - Great location with all that we needed during our stay
- Tanya (9/5): Superb -
- Gail (9/5): Superb - Very friendly and accommodating host. The apartment had everything we needed. Steep stairs to the bedroom, but this wasn't a problem for us.
- Teagan (10/5): Fantastic - We had a wonderful stay! The hosts make you feel very welcome. They're opening a wine bar in the garden which will be fantastic once completed ☺️☺️ location was perfect and not too many stairs compared to other accommodation in the old town. There are stairs to get to the bedrooms and the apartment so if you have mobility impairment this may be challenging but is common when staying in the old town. We had no issues :)
- Meyeti (8/5): Little garden escape in central old town Dubrovnik - Very well located, in one of the backstreets, within minutes of the walls and nice restaurants. It was very peaceful despite being central. We love the feeling of having a little house and escape the crowds, the host were very nice and helpful to us. We recommend this place ! The main sitting area is a little dark but its not a problem when you can enjoy the garden !
- Anonymous (6/5): Enjoyed staying so close to everything. Host was very friendly. offered assistance at any time if needed - Excellent location. Very quiet. Very friendly host. Older building. Musky smell. Steep stairs to the bedrooms. Bathroom downstairs.
- Vicky (5/5): Beautiful Setting, Charming Hosts, But Room for Improvement in Cleanliness - The location is simply stunning, situated in the heart of the castle center, offering breathtaking views. The hosts were delightful and extremely friendly, always ready to assist with any questions or concerns. Their warmth and hospitality truly made the stay memorable. However, I must address the cleanliness issue. Despite the overall appeal of the place, there is significant room for improvement in this regard. The bedding, in particular, left much to be desired. After my two-day stay, I noticed that my skin were covered in small, itchy bumps. It's unclear whether this was due to dust mites or an allergic reaction, but it was certainly uncomfortable and concerning.
I strongly urge the management to pay closer attention to the cleanliness of the rooms, especially the bedding. Regularly washing and maintaining the linens, along with thorough dusting and cleaning, would greatly enhance the overall experience for guests. Cleanliness is an essential aspect of any accommodation, and it's crucial to ensure a hygienic environment for visitors.
In conclusion, while this bed and breakfast possesses stunning scenery and boasts a lovely location in the heart of the castle center, the cleanliness standards need improvement, particularly in regard to the bedding. With better attention to cleanliness, this place has the potential to become an outstanding destination that offers both beauty and comfort to its guests.
