Guest Reviews
- Cesar (9/5): -

- Lisa Tenace (8/5): - Location very good A little more spartan than what we usually like but it was reasonably priced
- Gabrielle (9/5): Very pleasant stay; extraordinary tours of butterflies, orchids, hummingbirds, birds, wtc. - Wonderful, copious traditional Costa Rican Breakfast
Very friendly staff
Very affordable Bathroom
Not expecting such strong wind at night in Monteverde
- Judith (8/5): Good value - This hotel and restaurant are owned by such nice people. The food is excellent.
It is a very small hotel and very basic. It is adequate given the low price. Plumbing can't handle t.p. if that concerns you. WiFi is good.
Location is good,if you are prepared for long, hilly walk into town. There are several good restaurants nextdoor as well as art/craft gallery and small grocery store. Short drive to Monteverde Cloud Preserve. Tiny bathroom.. if you are big person, it is tight fit. On main road, so some truck and motorcycle noise. Neighbor dogs are very barky ..cute and friendly..just up late...bring earplugs!
- Angeles (5/5): - La ubicación y la amabilidad del personal. Muchismo ruido por la noche, perros ladrando y mucho ruido en general.
- Gloria (10/5): - La comida deliciosa, la habitación perfecta muy limpio me encanto
- Mayan (9/5): -
- Guest (10/5): Excellente - La tranquilidad y buen servicio
- Etchevers (10/5): - Muy amables y los mejores patacones en especial la atención de santos mil gracias
- Maciej (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (8/5): Good location, pleasant stay - Liked the restaurant downstairs. Would have liked an external window in the room
- Kim (10/5): Quiet and clean - Helpful staff. Very nice, clean and quiet room. Would recommend!
- Tzui (1/5): The hotel owner was quite rude which made me feel uncomfortable. - Price is reasonable . I stayed here for a few nights. The weather was pretty bad the first couple of days, so all my clothes got damp. Since I decided to stay a bit longer and the weather got better, I thought I’d take the chance to wash some dirty clothes. At first, I asked one of the staff if I could hang my clothes outside to dry, and they said it was fine. But then the owner told the staff that I wasn’t allowed to hang anything outside.
So I moved my clothes to an upstairs common area where there was sunlight and left them there to dry. Later on, I was in a rush to go on an early tour, and the owner came over and told me I had to bring my clothes back inside. I didn’t have time right then, so I asked if it was okay to wait until I got back to move them.
But when I returned, I found out the owner had touched my stuff and moved my clothes back into my room without telling me. He even opened my room door by himself. I paid for the room, and I don’t think he had any right to go in without my permission. That’s really disrespectful. On top of that, he started yelling at me, saying, “This is a hotel, not your home.” Honestly, it was a terrible experience staying there.
- Christian (10/5): Value for money - Good location, very friendly hosts, good breakfast and restaurant. All value for money
- Smurray23 (6/5): Good location - Good location although it is at the top of a steep hill so that's something to consider! The room was spacious and comfortable and the staff were very friendly and kind. Breakfast was also tasty. The internet didn't work for a couple of days during our stay, and after that it was a bit hit and miss. The shower was freezing cold even though there was a hot tap but there wasn't any hot water. You can't flush paper down the toilet and the toilet bin wasn't emptied once during our three day stay - we also had to ask for more toilet roll as the room wasn't cleaned nor were fresh towels provided. The toilet flush was also really really poor and weak.
- Yixin (9/5): Superb - Owners were very friendly, speaking English and provided services to order transportation for us that reduced our workload significantly. We had very enjoyable three days here None
- Rachel (9/5): Superb - The hotel stuff helped me a lot during my stay, from booking shuttles and tours to mondane necessities. Their restaurant has variety of food and it was especially comfortable in rainy days.
- Kathleen (10/5): I am so glad that I stayed here! - Staying here was a great experience! Alisson and her husband were excellent hosts, it almost felt like a homestay. The restaurant and was great, and they really bent over backwards to make me comfortable. Everything was in short walking distance, and I'm glad it was located not right in the touristy, hostel-filled area. This area is much more peaceful, and even more convenient, as places I wanted to walk to (bat jungle, coffee farm) were more close by.
- Emmet (10/5): Exceptional - The staff/proprietors were exceptional. We arrived late, after a wet muddy hike from La Fortuna. We asked the hotel if they could wash and dry out clothes, and they had it done that night. Amazing. We ate dinner downstairs and it was just fantastic. Could not recommend this hotel/restaurant enough! nothing.
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - Juan Carlos and Martha were super welcoming and friendly and worked hard to make my stay as good as possible. The breakfast was great, traditional Costa Rican food.
- Cormac (6/5): Pleasant -
- Lucas (9/5): Good stay, good price. - Amazing location. The restaurant by the hotel was great too - with good discounts for the guests. Staff very friendly as well.
- Yingjie (10/5): We had a very good experience there. The owner of the hotel is a wonderful guy. He is very friendly. -
- Darryl (3/5): Stay away - The facility seems relatively modern and clean, but it has major functional failures. The host Juanka is fantastic. He's a lovely person and I feel bad about writing an otherwise negative review.
Booking.com caps the length of the review, so I'm continuing the negative side here, because it's factually important.
5) Deadbolted doors: At night, the front (glass) door (and the fire escape) are bolted shut with a deadbolt, so the only way out in the event of a fire (see electrical concerns) would be to smash the glass door, if you had something to do that with. My god, is that legal in Costa Rica?
6) Interior room - I did not realize that our room with the private bath, was entirely an interior room, with no outside windows. The tall frosted sliding window opens into a hallway, so at night when other patrons turn on the hall lights (to use a shared bathroom), the light floods into the bedroom. There's also no ventilation in the room without leaving the room open to the halls.
7) No A/C (not really a problem, but it leaves the rooms feeling damp). No ceiling fan either.
8) Bathroom has no ceiling, and so is connected to the main room (no privacy, and if there was hot water, the steam would disperse into and remain in the bedroom)
9) "Thin walls" - thin doors, but as a result, sound travels freely and there is very little privacy.
10) wooden doors (fire code?) - they swell and stick, meaning that every time someone opens/closes one, it's a little like a drum banging.
11) our children complained of ants in their room and I saw a massive insect (about 2-3" long) on their wall the day we left.
12) 2 out of 3 of the electric sockets in our room were inaccessible, behind the beds. Luckily, I pack a long extension cord, and was able to use the socket from across the room.
13) Breakfast was good, but I'd not call it "Exceptional" ... Now I'm nitpicking.
You get what you pay for here. The cons are numerous and troubling. Normally for minor complaints, I wouldn't bother, but there are just too many to disregard. This is not an 8.7 (Excellent) accommodation. It could be if all its problems did not exist.
1) Gurgling/geyser toilets. A couple times an hour the toilets will bubble and gurgle, strong enough to occasionally (not always) expel water droplets onto the toilet seat and surrounding floor. It's disgusting and happened to me twice while sitting on the toilet (and I'm not there all day) causing me to jump off. It happened both in our private bathroom and the shared bathroom that our children were using. The vent system for the plumbing is defective and when other toilets or sinks in the hotel are used, the "air" in the system gets pushed past the toilet traps. Unacceptable. Luckily sewage odor was not part of the problem. In the US, I would report this to a health agency.
2) No hot water during our 2 day stay. I'm not sure how they run a restaurant (below) without hot water, but maybe they have a separate tank for that.
3) Electricity (#1) - Frightening: in the middle of the night, the overhead lights in our room came on by themselves (the switch was off). Both overhead lights were a little dimmer than they would be if the switch was engaged (which I did several times, and the lights would get brighter). One of the two lights was pulsating, brighter dimmer brighter dimmer. I contacted Juanka who came over immediately and turned off the power to that circuit. He seemed to be familiar with the problem,. It had rained earlier that day, and I can only guess that there is a leak that's getting into the electric boxes and shorting out circuits that shouldn't be connected. It's ridiculous. The next day the circuit was restored, but I'm not convinced that the problem was resolved.
4) Electricity (#2) - exposed wires on beside switches, also sizzling sound when switched.
- Raya (8/5): Very good - Very helpful host and clean space. Due to the location of my room, some clients were sitting just outside of my door and since the walls are not waterproof, I could hear everything they were watching on their phone.
- Kathleen (9/5): Wonderful owners, value and location. - The owners were amazing. It felt almost like a homestay. Alisson booked my tours, brought me ice for my injured knee, and her casado was the best I had in Costa Rica. The location was quiet and peaceful, with everything conveniently close by and walkable, including bat, frog and orchiduseums, as well as ecological sanctuary. The restaurant was a tad pricey, but the food was really good, and the rooms were very cheap.
- Conceicao (10/5): Exceptional - The owners Martha and her husband are exceptional and helping with any questions, tours, travel, recommendations The room was spacious and clean with the external but private bathroom just the opposite of the room. The breakfasts were good and the meals in their restaurant as well. I had really nice time in this place with the owners, chatting with them in the evenings and enjoying our stories. Thank you Martha and JuanCo! 😀 hope to come again!
- Ryszard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Iain (7/5): Good - Quiet location just above busy centre. Parking at door, very rare in Monteverde Basic rooms, but only to be expected for location and price.
- Laura (8/5): Lovely family run hotel - The staff were lovely and very helpful in this family run hotel. Breakfast was good. Beds and the room were very comfortable. Lots of space to store luggage. There is a nice restaurant downstairs. Trips we booked through the hotel were great as was our transport to the next location. Just be aware that this hotel is at the top of a hill. We walked downhill to Monteverde town in about 10-15 minutes and got a taxi back. Everything else was great.
- Janel (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was very tasty and filling! The hosts were so nice and made me feel really at home. I was recommend to take the boat to to La Fortuna and I’m so glad I did and listening to their recommendation as the journey was lovely. Would stay again
15-20 min walk into town and I did not have a car but easy to get around in taxi. Maybe another blanket as I got a little cold at night
- Matthew (10/5): Clean & well-maintained, good breakfasts, short walk from some of the town. - Nice location just a short walk away from some of the town. Also a short drive from the cloud forest, & the Curi-Cancha Reserve. Property was very clean & well-maintained. Breakfast each morning was tasty, & the 6:30 or 9 serving time was appreciated by different members of our group. Common area was a nice place to play some games. No complaints.
- Trevor (8/5): Good location with helpful owners and nice restaurant. - Good location, quiet as not in town, supermarket and restaurants close by, but not far from the town. Friendly, helpful staff.
Restaurant and breakfast were good Occasionally some noise from bar opposite, but didn't bother me, may bother some.
Room did not really have a proper outside window.
- Adam (8/5): owners will go an extra mile for you! - excellent service by the owners - they allowed for a late check-in in the middle of the night after my flight, very quick laundry service, tasty food at the restaurant, and helpful assist with tours' booking!
it's a family business, and you can certainly feel at home there :) very helpful, kind and relaxed. todo bien, y muchas gracias! definitely recommend!
- Dumas (9/5): Great Location, Restaurant and Staff - The staff was fantastic! The restaurant was of great quality and value, and bonus points for being open late. The location is very convenient to walk down to the main center of restaurants. Many hiking trails are only minutes away. All transport knew the hotel location and it was a short (10-20 min) ride to all of the national parks/cloud forest entries. Overall it was a great stay and price for Costa Rica. We would recommend it.
- Douglas (10/5): I’d stay longer the next time around - Hosts were spectacularly kind, went out of there way to help me repair my motorcycle, stash my motorcycle, schedule activities, and cook delicious food. Great place to stay in a really beautiful town!! Nothing, great spot for a really decent rate!!
- Elvie11 (9/5): Superb - Marta and Juan Carlos are amazing. Breakfast is included and so delicious. He helped me a lot with what I need like a taxi to the bus station and shuttle bus to Cloud Forest. You can also store your luggage so you can tour the places . Bathroom is clean and good size . It's Affordable . And if you are hungry, the restaurant is just right there.
He answered a lot of my questions. Thank you . None
- Lisa (5/5): Passable -
- Mirjam (10/5): Exceptional - The location is perfect and the rooms are spacious and clean. The bathroom was also very clean and quite big. The breakfast was delicious and sufficient.
- Elizabeth (10/5): We had a very good time. Marta and Juan Carlos are amazing host’s. They arranged tours for us and answered all the ques - It was very clean and the location was very convenient
- Wouter (9/5): Great value for money and welcoming hosts. Food was superb! - We had a warm welcome and felt really at home. Great beds, breakfast, food and facilities.
- Changlin (2/5): Very poor - Hosts were helpful. The room and environment are not in good condition compared to this price range. First time felt very disappointed at a good rating property. It didn't fit this rating.
They may claim it's normal in Monteverde but it isn't true if you search for more or visit a few food places.
- Brad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gabriel (7/5): Good - The size of the room, breakfast and staff The room have a window facing the corridor
- Friedrich (10/5): Great accommodation in Monte Verde! - The staff is very nice and accommodating. I felt very comfortable and the attached restaurant has incredible food for a good price.
- Valdas (9/5): Pleasant stay - The overall atmosphere of the hotel was nice, room was spacious and nicely decorated, hosting family was pleasant. Restaurant serves decent food quality and good portion size at considerably cheap price. Location of the hotel is a bit further away from Santa Elena center however there is a shop literally 20 meters away aswell as other restaurants nearby. There is bus stops 100m away which takes you to Cloud Forest and surrounding towns. The walls felt like paper thin but apart from that was all good.
- Nicola (5/5): Ok but not great - Friendly staff. It was very cold at night and the thin blanket and bed cover weren’t enough. There was no bin or beside tables and lamps. Breakfast was ok but the pancakes were not cooked. We accidentally booked a shared bathroom which was a pain with others showering when I needed the loo. But that’s my fault.
- Barbara (10/5): Friendly family run hotel with good food. - The hotel is located in a more peaceful part of Monteverde, which is lovely. It is a great gateway to explore the Cloud Forest. Very clean and comfortable room with access to drinking water and tea. Excellent restaurant. Most importantly, the owners are the nicest people we met in Costa Rica. Marta and Juan Carlos really made our stay special. You can feel that they run their hotel with true passion. Don't forget to ask them for local recommendations, they will also book tours and activities for you. Really recommend.
- Gal (8/5): Good value for money - Nice hosts!
We booked the room with the private bathroom external buy mistake and they upgrade it to the room with a private bathroom inside
Clean! Nice breakfast, good price Hot water and Wi-Fi connection working intermittently
- Alladin (3/5): Poor -
- Sylvain (8/5): Very good -
- Graydon (9/5): Very clean, affordable room with friendly hosts and good free breakfast - This hotel was very lovely, both hosts were super friendly and offered us great advice about the city. The rooms were clean and tidy, and the bathroom was also quite clean. The free breakfast was a great way to start off the day, and we loved the meal that we had when we went to the restaurant for supper one night. This hotel was a great experience, would recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, quiet room at a very affordable price!
- Carmen (8/5): Lovely short stay. Easy to get to the Cloud Forest which is 4km up hill. Take a shuttle bus. - The staff were great and room was clean. Room was a bit small and no safe in the room.
- Krystal (9/5): Superb - Hosts were very friendly and accommodating. Location.
- Sasha (8/5): Great location, lovely family run hotel - Friendly, super helpful family run hotel and restaurant in a Great location.
- Tizzy (6/5): Pleasant - Room not the one described in listing. No windows. Hole in the top of the wall so could hear other guests very clearly.
- Garrett (10/5): Exceptional - Family run hotel! Extremely nice people with clean quiet rooms. The food at the restaurant was delicious and the hosts helped us get a ride wherever we needed to go would stay again.
- Monty (9/5): A good reasonable place to stay. - Great location, good breakfast, and very accommodating staff. They allowed us an early checkin. Our private restroom was across the hall. Not a big deal, but I would have preferred it to be inside the same room.
- Leonie (10/5): Exceptional - All good, room was great as well as swimming pool Breakfast is a bit poor
- Inês (9/5): Superb - The room was big and super clean. The breakfast and other meals were delicious. The hotel is in a very calm place and near to a very nice view over Monteverde. The hosts helped me with all activities in Monteverde, with getting to the activities since I had no car and with the transportation to my next stop in Costa Rica. I really recommend this hotel, specially to people with a car!
- Sarah (9/5): Great place to stay in Monteverde! - The staff was so friendly and supportive and the food in the restaurant was amazing!! Also, everything is super clean. The only point I would flag is that the room doesn't have a window.
- Solène (10/5): Exceptional - The family was very welcoming and was having some great advices about what to visit in the city. Their restaurant is also very tasty. Thank you

- Will (9/5): We booked 2 rooms with en-suite bathrooms but only one had. None of the rooms had balcony and no cleaning through out th - Very helpful staff Not as described on booking.com
- Rajesh (10/5): Exceeded my expectations! - Very clean, friendly staff, close to Monte Verde cloud forest, good food, ATM nearby, hotel staff helped with travel arrangement to zip line, cloud forest and onward journey to Manuel Antonio. The hotel has good restaurant where they made custom menu items for us since we are vegetarians. There is super market right next door where you can buy most daily use items. Since we traveled in La Fortuna before coming here they also helped with quick laundry, dried and folded for a very reasonable price. The people at this hotel embody the “Pura Vida” culture of Costa Rica! Thanks again for the warmth and hospitality. My first instinct when booking hotels in Costa Rica was to go with large name brand hotels but the small mom and pop operators really made it a memorable stay.
- Andrzej (10/5): Exceptional - Nice hotel in good location, close to shops, bus terminal, Cerro Amigos, to Cloud Forest, reasonable price, own restaurant. None
- Isabel (4/5): Nice location. Make sure bathrooms were fixed before you book - Well located. Center of town, near restaurants and supermarket. We have booked two rooms for two nights. The moment we used the toilets, they got clocked, in both rooms. The owner blamed us because we were throwing toilet paper in the toilet. He said it shouldn’t be done. We never heard of this issue before. We have traveled all over the world, and never encountered something like this. We had to cancel the second night, and the owner was very accommodating to refund us that night. I really feel bad to give this review, because, as he was, as majority of people in Costa Rica, extremely nice and relaxed. Hopefully he will be able to fix the toilet system and people will not have to go through any inconveniences.
- Nathan (10/5): Owners are especially friendly, made sure we had a pleasant stay. Excellent value, great location - Three of us stayed for a night. Chose this place to explore Monteverde. We had a warm welcome and a nice early breakfast to start the day. Clean place and superb value for money.
- Anonymous (10/5): Hospitable, kind, clean, and convenient! - Firstly the staff were very kind and hospitable! Juanca, Marta, and Alisson were wonderful hosts! They are knowledgeable of the area, provides advice, and even a dryer to dry my clothes after canyoning.
The place was very clean and the food is fantastic. The breakfast tasted delicious. Traditional breakfast included eggs, rice and beans, plantains, sausage, cheese, natilla, fruits, and coffee.
Location is close to the sunset viewpoint, Ficus tree, soda (Costa Rican restaurant), other restaurants, and a short 5-10min walk to the centro commercial. If you need a taxi, they can provide a phone # or help you call. Tours also will be able to pick you up from here.
The only thing that could be improved is only one shared bathroom. Some guests may take very long so be aware that the shower and bathroom is in one room. There is another public bathroom downstairs in the restaurant; however, that is not always open.
The wifi is usually two bars upstairs and may be less with more guests.

- Wendy (10/5): Fantastic stay - Nice comfy room, good location, lovely friendly helpful staff.I liked the kettle & fresh water on the room floor & breakfast was delicious 😋
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - Owners, and everyone who was working there, super friendly, easy check in, unmatched value for money for the hotel and it's restaurant, food was amazing. All our tours were booked with the hotel and we cannot fault a thing,.
The value of this property can't be stressed enough, best in Costa Rica! Sound travels between rooms, but we werent disturbed.
- Sinéad (7/5): Nice. - The breakfast here was very nice - there was a few options so I was able to mix it up a bit each day. There is a mini market next door. I ate in the restaurant one night and the food was very good .
The room I was given initially was awful - one of the walls was not complete and the room was very cold. I also had a very noisy neighbour who was shouting and tv up full blast. However I was given a better room immediately and there was no extra charge.
I loved the town of Santa elena and all the national parks- there is lots to do in the area. The shared bathroom was a disaster. There was only one bathroom between a few rooms - so if someone was in the shower you can’t pee or brush teeth. Some guests made a terrible mess of the bathroom but it was cleaned immediately.
A mirror in the room would have been nice.
The location was a little disappointing for me - in hindsight I would have preferred to be closer to Santa elena - while the town is only 800metes down the road it’s a steep climb back up.
- Tadeas (7/5): Good - Everything is pretty good in this hotel: nice and attentive staff, clean, new hotel; shared bathroom kept clean, breakfast was good, price was fair. Good location on a bus to eastbound attractions. Would come again. Did not feel there was too much road noise like other reviewers said. Stayed 3 nights. I have issues only with the specific room I had. There is a huge open space (hole, but built as planned) in far up of the wall. Probably for ventilation and it works. It really is way up, so noone can see in the room. But it means zero acoustic privacy, you can hear everything like if standing in the hall (and vice versa). I was alone, so I did not mind too much, but would not like to be in this room as a couple. The open space also makes the room quite chilly at night, sometimes there is a draft. I could often smell the kitchen as well. Room (twin) is fairly small for 2 people, but for one it was appropriate. But still, would come again.
- Lukáš (3/5): Who gave 5stars rating to this hotel? - - perfect locality
- acceptable price
- very friendly owner (but not all staff) - the worst 5 stars hotel I've ever been to (rating should be 2 stars)
- dirty and dusty rooms (ants and other insect)
- dirty bed full of hair (from previous guests)
- no equipment (1 towell for 2 people, damaged TV, no A/C, no personal lights only some cables leading to nowhere)
- rude and arogant cleaner
- no window in the room
- frequent noise and vibrations from wind
- light breakfast
- Mary (10/5): Exceptional - The small family run hotel was very cozy and convenient. The owner was so helpful with our questions. Great breakfast and small grocery store close by. I would love to visit again
- Fernanda (9/5): Superb -
- Axel (10/5): Lovely place - Lovely family owned spot, highly recommend. Super friendly and excellent location for a great price Rooms are of different quality. You could get a little unlucky.

- Ivan (10/5): Nice hotel in Monteverde - Small hotel with a restaurant, close to Monteverde forest. Everything was clean and tidy, comfortable bed and pillows, teapot in a common area. Stuff was very helpful and friendly!
I have had a fish for diner in restaurant downstairs which was very tasty.
Overall, great value for money!
- Hgharry24 (8/5): Very good -
- Shawn (6/5): Great minus road noise - Clean rooms
Sweet staff
Good coffee included with breakfast and breakfast is fine as well Unfortunately for those of us that are light sleepers this hotel gets a lot of street noise and seems to have very thin walls/ceiling which lets a lot of noise in, if you’re a heavier sleeper you’ll be fine
- Mike (10/5): Great spot in Monteverde - Great accommodation in Monteverde with easy access to the cloud forest. Marta and family are gracious hosts. The property is clean and well kept. Amazing value at this price point.
- Neil (8/5): Very good value for Monteverde - Nice owner and wife, central location, breakfast included, good value, restaurant below with good food We had rooms 1 (shared bathroom) and 3 (the “studio”). The rooms were quite basic. Neither had an outside window.
The road outside can be quite noisy at night.
- Susan (9/5): Superb -
- Isabella (10/5): amazing value for money! - I loved everything about my stay. The location, great value for money, breakfast and the warm welcome of Martha.
The wifi was good as well and the bathroom super modern and clean. nothing to not like about it
- Graeme (7/5): Good - The loocation was good for walking. Room was large with a comfortable bed. I booked a room with a private room. We were given a choice of 2 rooms, one with a private bathroom that was a bit dark and the other without a bathroom but had a bathroom outside the door. We chose this one as had more light as we were told we had the only use of the bathroom but there was someone else using the bathroom. A friend of hosts apparently. When we raised this as an issue the lady got a bit agressive and tried to say we did not book a room with private bathroom. She was the same one who told us we had sole use of the bathroom. The hot water in the shower was not very good. There was a trick to getting the water to be hot
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional - Great breakfast, very nice people, restaurant
- Oier (9/5): Superb - Ordaintzen denerako oso ondo dago. Negozio familiar bat da eta jabeak oso adeitsuak dira. Asko entzuten da inguruko geletako zarata, zorionez gu egon giñenean ez zebilen jende asko eta ondo deskantsatu genuen.
