- Hannah (5/5): Liveable but not loveable - The house was close to places where I could buy food and reasonably accessible from the hospital where I was working. The common areas were very clean. Nothing in the house was beautiful (except the floor boards) but it was all functional. The yard was ready for a trim but very green. The washing machine and dryer appeared new and were excellent. A washing basket might be a nice touch though. Communication from the owner was good. The lighting was good in most of the house. I like the there was a good blind on my bedroom window. I only wished there was some sort of lamp. Very little love appeared to have been put into the accomodation. Room numbers were scrawled onto doorways in black marker. The light switch in my room was obviously crooked. My bed and bedding was seemingly as cheap and basic as possible, and not overly comfortable. I would have preferred a ‘top sheet’, but understand this may be a cultural thing. There was no beside table or even a bed head or foot. The cupboard in my room was in a sorry state. Looked like it had been pulled from hard rubbish. I think it was slightly mouldy. The window was shattered and apparently to be almost taped together. The rug and carpet were stained. The communal toilet did not flush very well. As a woman, it might also have been nice to have a bin in the toilet. I would have also appreciated a lock. Although there were some cooking essentials provided, I did not see a proper chopping board, large kitchen knife (there was only a fruit knife with broken tip), a dish drying rack, baking tray, large enough pots and pans to practically cook with, glad wrap, baking paper, and multiple teaspoons. It is possible the other lady in the house had teaspoons, a chopping board and knife somewhere I wasn’t aware of. All the supplies and equipment in the house appeared either to have been thrown out by a previous owner due to obvious defect, or to be the cheapest possible option. For example, cooking oil was provided, which is wonderful, but it was the cheapest possible vegetable oil money can buy, and that somewhat spoiled the effect. The house was perfectly habitable and I respect a bit of frugality but I don’t think it’s fair to charge people around $500 a week for one little cell and the use of a couple sparsely equipped common areas. You could rent an entire house or apartment for that price. I understand this accomodation may not be intended as a longterm rental, but the lovely lady who was there at the same time as me had been there 8 months and I felt she was being taken advantage of somewhat.
