- Cathy (9/5): Beautiful, Traditionally Decorated Apartment Within Walking Distance to Tahrir Square and the Nile - This is a lovely apartment located within easy walking distance to Tahrir Square, the Nile, the old Egyptian Museum, the Cairo Tower across the river. It's less than a five minute walk to Oldish, a wonderful restaurant, on the way to Tahrir Square. The apartment is in an older building in the middle of primarily a residential area. There are stairs to reach it, but it's just one floor up from the ground floor. It's beautifully decorated in a traditional Egyptian style and upon opening the living room and back bedroom shutters, flooded with light. Pola, the owner, was very easy to communicate with and accessing the apartment was very easy via a lockbox. There's a small convenience store right next door to purchase bottled water.
Two recommendations (especially if you're coming off a long, international flight). Ask Pola to 1) provide the apartment address in Arabic (we used that a lot), and 2) to arrange for a driver to pick you up at the airport. It is more expensive than just hiring a taxi on the spot, but was well worth it. Cairo airport when we arrived was extremely hectic and frantic. If you've been there before and know what you're doing, likely no problem. If you haven't and you're exhausted after a 12 hour flight, maybe not. Everything was handled -- Visas on arrival, moving through passport control and second security, finding the actual driver in the traffic chaos once you walked outside. The only issue we had was that the drain on the bathroom floor (which was under wooden slats) had a tendency to back up and overflow water onto the floor when using the shower. We had to squeegee the floor several times. I don't know if this can be fixed. It is an older building (part of it's charm), and just may be something to live with. It did not diminish our appreciation of the lovely apartment and it's stellar location.
Abbiamo alloggiato in 6 senza nessun problema. Nulla!
