Guest Reviews
- Monique (9/5): -
- Nitzer (8/5): -
- Dawn (4/5): I would choose a lodge over this in the future - Location Never saw front desk after check in. The building is old and needs a refresh. The king room is attached to an outside bathroom facility which is very noisy at night as the local teens hang out there.
- Jay (10/5): - The hotel was situated along the water, so we could watch birds foraging. Quick walk to the beach, restaurants, park... Could be loud at night because of a bar playing music. However, I think every hotel had to deal with that.
- Tom (8/5): -
- Asier (7/5): -
- Kristen (10/5): The very best hosts, and amazing quiet views. Perfect location. The perfect stay in Tortuguero. - This stay is on the edge of town and nice and quiet, very walkable to everything in Tortuguero. The view of the lagoon out the windows and off of the shared patio was amazing. A very short walk to the beach. There is plenty of patio space to spread out and watch the sunset. Iguanas walk by daily. The hosts are the most amazing ladies. They are communicative and helpful and ensured we had everything we needed. I highly recommend Sunset Hotel for you place to stay in Tortuguero. nothing, everything was perfect.
- Britta (9/5): Een echte aanrader - Heerlijke kamer , supervriendelijke host , zeer goede ligging /
- Emilie (8/5): Tres bien - Chambre sommaire mais grande
Calme
- Nicolas (7/5): - Patio, view, room size Room C is noisy
- Valcke (9/5): - Bon emplacement
- Timothy (7/5): My stay was fine and I was relaxed. The canoe tour was great (book the earliest time slot in the AM - The AC was cold. The noise outside the room. Both evenings and into the night, the local kids were playing and working on their bicycles. BUT they were polite and not overly load. Happy to see them playing. The waterfront area was at one time very nice and special, but it has gone to disarray. I believe that with a little clean up and some paint, the dock area could be used for outside use. Maybe hire the kids to clean and paint it.
- Lorraine (8/5): Good stay, very comfortable - Location on the riverfront and we had a room looking out to the water. Seating outside. Large room and great fridge. Set just outside main busyness so more peaceful. Good communication from Juliana. Not to say we didn’t like anything but there was a feeling that the place had been ‘let go’ a little and was a bit shabby outside. Still a good place to stay, everything worked and was good value for money.
- Adriana (7/5): Nice place, book room with window. - Very friendly owners. Room is clean. Nice seating area. Quiet at night. Room doesnt have a window or ventilation option. Very damp.
Was prima.
- Stafford MBA (8/5): Fantastic - The staff & service was exceptional, consistent with the Pura Vida vibe of the entire island. The hotel is at the very end of the main (only?) street in Tortuguero, so it was quiet & peaceful! The smallish patio overlooks canal & I could have just stayed in the rocking chairs, gazing at nature all day
Will stay again. It would have been nice to have morning coffee service, but there are plenty of small vendors just steps away on main street.
- Aniol (6/5): - Un patí privat amb molt bones vistes L’habitació bastant justa
- Ana Karen (10/5): -
Tudo bom.
- sykes (10/5): - Great staff, beautiful location, rooms were nice and cool
- olivier (8/5): -
- Itxaso (8/5): -
- Shannon (6/5): Ok, but wouldn't waste money here again. - The room was clean and the bed fairly comfortable. The AC worked well which was a plus as it was fairly humid during my visit. Staff was very friendly, although check-in felt rushed and I didn't understand the instructions well due to language barriers and the woman spoke extremely fast instead of taking time to ensure I understood everything. I did feel safe as a solo traveler. According to pictures, I thought there was a working bar/restaurant onsite, there was not. So no drinks or food available which was what I really wanted during my stay (yes, plenty of places in the village, but sometimes I just want something closer) It was closed and when I asked about it, I wasn't given any information. The location was at the end of the "road" and I thought would be quiet, but the neighbors are pretty loud, you can hear everything through the walls. There wasn't really any outdoor space to sit and relax comfortably. Some cracked and steep concrete pads with plastic adirondack chairs facing the river were provided but with construction nearby, it wasn't a pleasant place to hang out. Not much ambience at all.
The room was clean but sparse. A nightstand, bed, mini fridge. Bathroom had small sink, toilet and shower (probably the best feature). The entry door was a little awkward (I had to have the curtains closed entire time as my room faced the main entry gate and walkway), and a rug or something would've been nice to catch sand/dirt instead of me tracking it in. A broom in the room would've been helpful so I could sweep up near the bed at least (there was no housekeeping during the stay). The mat outside was no help. The outdoor "private patio" was small gravel with 2 small, unstable, cheap chairs and rickety table that faced a wall and the main walkway.
Overall, it's not a terrible place, but after visiting some new friends I met at their hostel, I would definitely choose the hostel instead--great price, beautiful landscaping with multiple hammocks for guests. This hotel just didn't seem like they know what a hotel should be. I was most disappointed about no bar/restaurant being available and would've appreciated a heads up prior to my arrival that that feature was not open.
- Tim (8/5): - Günstig, einfach, aber total ausreichend Ein Kaffee morgens wäre toll gewesen 🙂
- Fabio (9/5): -
- IRENE (7/5): -
- James (10/5): Fantastic stay. - Great stay.
- Lucie (7/5): -
- Amelia (8/5): -
- Lisa (6/5): - Loved the AC in the room Room was close to the outside and check in counter so it could be loud.
Bathroom is barebones and the ceilings don't go all the way up.
It felt expensive for the accommodation, but understandable because it is on a small island.
- miriam (10/5): -
- Marc (10/5): Exceptional - Next to the river, really pretty. The owners where lovely and help us with everything we needed.
Air conditioner and wifi work perfect.
- Dale (8/5): Perfect base for exploring Tortuguero - Great view from the terrace, very friendly staff We didn't know that someone would meet us at La Pavona so we were initially slightly confused but it all worked out
- Laura (8/5): Very good -
- Tracey (7/5): Friendly, clean. - By water, at end of row in Tortuguero. Clean, air con if needed. Friendly owner. I was in room beside gate. Would have been nice to have met curtains as didn’t feel could open curtains as anyone could look in.
It was funny but some baby crabs were in room. They got in through cracks in wall. They were cute though.
- David (10/5): Great location and comfy rooms. I would definately stay here again if I am back in Tortuguero. - Best possible location.
- Stacie (9/5): Comfortable, convenient stay on Tortuguero for us and our dog - Good location right on the canals of Tortuguero, very short distance from the beach. Close to the trails and away from the din of the main part of town. Private, comfortable, and the hosts were awesome. Booking did not communicate all of our details to them (incorrect # of people, did not include mention of our dog), but the hosts took it in stride. The hosts also gave us extremely useful information about getting to and from Tortuguero, connected us with a great tour guide, and made sure we knew important details. Will stay here again when I return to the area. Difficult to reach the temperature controls on the shower, but the hosts took care of it for us, with no problem. Any of our needs were met any time we had a question or request.
- Gwyneth (8/5): Lovely place to stay a few days in Tortuguero - Lovely sunset view, good aircon and comfy beds No issues, except the on site bar never seemed to open
- Frances (9/5): Amazing sunsets with resident iguanas in the garden - Great location, views and friendly staff
- Marius (8/5): Very good - Clean and basic nothing fancy. Very good for doing a lot of activities around. Nice helpfull people
- Sara (5/5): Passable - Staff were very friendly. The bathroom light didnt work very well. Our bedroom was overlooked by the road. No breakfast available.
- Cecilia (7/5): Nice hotel at the river - Spacious room with a fridge
Nice area outside to enjoy river view Walls of the bathroom did not go to the roof meaning you could hear everything in the room which is not preferable in a 4-person room. Water in the shower was cold.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Jana (9/5): Superb - The room is easy, but there is fridge. It was very usefull in this hot weather.
Guids was very kindly. I like it everything.
- Choudra (10/5): It is a very good facility with an adorable owner. It is definitely value for money. The view is amazing. - The practical location. We were near everything (beach, river, shops and restaurants). The owner is adorable. Noise from boats
- Maria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jonathan (8/5): Just what we needed, cheap and cheerful, friendly staff and great location for Tortuguero and its activities! - Staff very accommodating to our needs, quick replies via message and giving info detail. All lovely!
Room, pink colour, spacious but minimal, 2 double beds that were comfy enough.
Great sunset view of river! And outside sitting location to hang up washing. 2 mins from beach too! Ventilation in the room was poor, but we had a good air conditioning to help with that. Noise at night can be vibrant from the town. Windows are thin so heat/cold easily escapes. If air con is off, room heats up quick with outside air temperature.
- Marta (10/5): Exceptional -
- Max (9/5): Hot water and air conditioning in a lovely location. - Hot water in the shower and air conditioning in the room is a wonderful thing, and difficult to find at this price in Tortuguero!
The location is also great, 5 minute walk from anywhere in town, but far enough away from the center that it is very quiet and peaceful. For the money, this place is great value with lovely staff. Nothing we didn't like :)
- Renaud (5/5): Passable - No breakfast. Staff rarely available and often absent. Poor closure system of the doors.
- Victoria (9/5): Superb - We had an enyoable time at the hotel. The air conditioning was cold and the showers hot. But the best part was the friendliness of the women who worked there. Super helpful with shuttles, easy to communicate with and overall very friendly. Highly recommended!
- Russell (7/5): Good -
- Karen (6/5): Convenient location for a short visit of Tortugero. Otherwise nothing special. - Easy to reach. Transfer from La Pavona was well organized. Conveniently located at end of main street in Tortugero. The room was not really cosy. Just too large beds inside. Nowhere to sit. Could be cleaner.
- Ellenjane93 (8/5): Decent place for a quick stay - Great location, nice and quiet, lovely view over the rivers. Shower was cold.
- Jim (8/5): Great staff, great views, great cocktails, great value. - Great outside seating area looking over the river side of Tortuguero, with both sun loungers and covered areas for the many rainy days in this part of the world. Superbly friendly team running the hotel who were happy to assist with queries such as a slightly later check out. Happy hour cocktails were also a pleasure, with good music and the best of views. Power outages made the rooms a little warm when the AC was unavailable but this was completely down to the major storms you get in the wet season (which we had chosen ourselves for turtle nesting season). There was nothing the hotel could have done to prevent this and power is usually restored quite quickly anyway. It’s just part of staying in a remote tropical region like this.
- Gemma (9/5): Great location! - Great location. Great view over the lake. Staff very friendly. Amazing shower. Comfy bed. Air conditioning and fridge in the room. Nothing
- Alexia (8/5): Very good -
- Manuel (9/5): Superb -
- Callum (9/5): Superb - Good location right on the river. There were benches outside the rooms that anyone in the hostel can use. Room was comfortable with en suite. Fridge in room. Hostel on the main drag albeit at the far end. Still super close to everything though. Air con took a while to cool the room down. But not too much of an issue.
- Elisenda (9/5): Superb - Location and views
- Karin (8/5): Very good - The position of the hotel was excellent . You could comfortably watch thr boats on the river a nd the sunsets from the nice seating area.
Cute little bar also on the premises. The bathroom was rather basic.
- Jada (9/5): Super cool and affordable place to stay! - The area around the hotel was really cool and well decorated, with a nice spot by the river to sit and relax. The air conditioning in our room (E) worked really well. The staff was really nice and they don't enter your room during your stay if you book more than 3 days. There were 2 cockroaches we found in the room, but I'm not sure if they were there originally or if we left the door open at some point. The staff doesn't speak very much English but that wasn't a big issue.
- Brigid (8/5): Very good -
- B. (10/5): Would do it again! - Location on the water was great. Owner was very accommodating, warm and friendly. The bar was perfect for watching the sunset. Room was nothing fancy, but clean and comfy with hot shower and fridgette. Located at the quiet end of town with an easy walk to whatever was needed. Doing construction on the sea wall during the day was noisy, but we were out mostly anyway. Boats on the canal run pretty late and loud, so a few times it felt like being next to a highway.
- Karim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elise (8/5): Very good -
- James (8/5): Very good -
- Luc (6/5): Okay to sleep but else not much that stands out - The staff were friendly and the solo room had all it needed for a good night’s sleep For the price you pay it is slightly disappointing. There is not really anything going on at the hotel and no possibilities for food or breakfast. Consequently the hotel becomes a place where you basically sleep and nothing else which for the price you pay is disappointing
- Puskar (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel is a water front property. We loved lounging at the patio area.
- Sylvain (8/5): Very good -
- Eleanor (5/5): Clean budget hotel convenient to all activities - The air conditioning was nice. Room pretty clean. There was a small refrigerator. Host messaged me about the route while we were driving to the boat dock. Warm water in shower. Beds uncomfortable. No chair and just 1 nightstand next to one of the beds.
- Chris (8/5): Great place to stay for easy access to Tortugeuro national park - Great location, friendly staff
- Chaves (8/5): Very good - The service and location Maybe improve the mattress
- Manuel (7/5): Good - Marcia the owner was super nice and the rooms are big and clean. AC working perfectly. The walls are very thin, so we heard every noise outside.
- Sean (8/5): Amazing staff and for a hostel, this is a decent place for sure. - The staff especially Adrian who hustled really hard to get us some Turtle tours last minute, was amazing and was the most friendly person and family! We ran into him many times in the town and he was always asking how things are. Such a great guy and truly made the trip the best! Was a little bummed that the bar on site, which they said to be open from 5-9, but it never was open. There’s plenty of other places to have a drink but we also wanted to enjoy the quiet and comfort of being close to our room when we just go into town.
- Tracey (8/5): Great little place. Would really recommend. - Great location at the end of the village. Staff were lovely & very welcoming. They arranged pick up from the airport for us. Nice little bar overlooking the river with many cocktails available. Good aircon. We loved the resident dogs. Could do with a shelf in the bathroom. Maybe the option of continental breakfast would be nice.
- Luis (7/5): Calm place with A/C - Great A/C to avoid the high humidity of the place. Beds are comfortable enough Shower could be improved, not enough strenght for all the sand of the beach
- Valeska (9/5): Superb -
- Isabell (9/5): Superb -
- Lotta (9/5): A calm place right next to the water at the main road - The tour guide who escourted us to the hotel, was friendly and give us comprehensive info about Tortuguero and tours. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Room had an effective A/C. The location was great: a calm place right next to the water at the main road. Every night beatles and small crabs came to our room. They were easy to remove but a little bit annoying. The toilet quality was weak, it didn’t flush well even after the staff tried to fix it.
- Lwadkin94 (10/5): Beautiful location, welcoming host, great stay! - Great stay here! Marcia was very welcoming and lovely. Seating area outside the main rooms has amazing views - as does the bar area (can confirm what others are saying about the best cocktails!) Room was clean and the air con worked perfectly. Location was perfect for exploring the town but still had a remote, relaxed feel.
