Guest Reviews

- Fuentes (10/5): -
- Jerry (9/5): Beautiful, serene stay in San Gerardo - The owners are very friendly and helpful. They also run the restaurant across the street called Miriam’s Quetzal which has a patio overlooking a valley with dozens of hummingbirds and various other birds feeding right in front of you. And the food is delicious! Hot water in the shower takes some practice to get it to work.
- mariska (9/5): - Prima bungalowtjes, prachtig uitzicht.
- Katja (8/5): Eine gute Wahl.
- Jonna (10/5): - The staff are wonderful. Very nice and helpful. Our bird guide, Alex was very well informed.
Coffee and meals were perfect.

- Tracy (8/5): Great stay in magical valley - Great location - directly opposite Miriam’s Quetzal cafe where you can watch hummingbirds on the feeders. A good pizza restaurant and a small mini market are next door. The owners were friendly and helpful. The cabin was cosy - the heater and lots of fluffy blankets kept us warm at night. Good WiFi No hot water in the shower
- Helena (10/5): -
- jean-pierre (8/5): -
- Downing (10/5): Staff was super friendly, food was great and birds incredible - Great cabins in a perfect serting

- Thomas (4/5): Waited to late to book a nicer place and if this happened again, I wouldn't book this place - The view from the cabin was very beautiful, restaurant view of hummingbirds really nice, food was good. Owners were nice and loaned me a hairdryer since there wasn't one in the room. They did provide coffee but we took the container to them daily to refill. The bed was very uncomfortable, cabin appeared much larger in the booking.com pics. Would have used the twin bed to sleep on ince the full size bed was very unconfortable, but my husband and I can't fit on it and there was no floor room for suitcases. The twin bed was used for suitcases. The bathroom was a children's bathroom, tiny sink, tiny toilet, note the toilet paper dispenser was bigger than the sink. No hot water at sink. To get hot water in the shower, you barely turned the knob on, then hopefully the "sound of heating up water" started (see pic). A trickle of water, barely enough to wash with. If you turned on too much, no hot water, only cold. Plus the "water heater" only lasted for a few minutes at a time, the heat would turn off a various times, when rinsing or washing your hair with cold water. I don't know if the other cabins are like this but Cabin "5" is a no renter for us ever again.
- Alejandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Manuel (8/5): Very good -
- Biser (8/5): Simple living - Good price, convenient location, peaceful. Only 1 chair, pretty small. Could use small table by bed. Also a fan would distribute heat better.
- Ann (9/5): The bird feeders off the deck are the reason I would return to stay here - The breakfast was not included in the price. All the meals at the restaurant were excellent.
- Paul (9/5): Great place, lovely people - Delicious food and great service from Miriam and her family, who also arranged a successful quetzal tour with an excellent local guide Alex.
Cabins are small but very cosy & suited us much better than the smarter looking hotels and lodges further down the valley. Lots of birds on the deck behind the cafe too. We loved it here. Nothing at all.
- Anne-louise (10/5): A great value, cozy cabin - A small, but cozy cabin. The heater kept us toasty and the blankets on the bed are super warm. The shower is hot. There is a coffee maker. Ana is very friendly and helpful. The cabins are opposite a cafe and next to a pizza restaurant. The spare single bed was a great place to put our stuff. A fridge would have been handy.
The views from the balconies are not great
Note that if there are 3 people in the room, there would be nowhere to put your things.
- Lizethe (8/5): Excellent food and birdingspot - From the balcony you can see a lot of endemic birds, lots of Hummingbird and many other.
The Quetzale is close by. The food is excellent In the cloud Forrest you have to keep in mind, that clouds will come and go. Warm clothes are necessary
- Gianfranco (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rojas (8/5): Very good -
- Gustavo (8/5): Very good -
- Oscar (9/5): Superb -
- Heikki (9/5): Superb -
- John (6/5): OK would stay somewhere a bit more cosy if returning. - Location Room wasn't very clean. Very poorly room insulated so very cold at night, think sleeping in a tent. Heater supplied didnt do the job as insulation so poor.
- Domenge (9/5): Superb - It's a cabin in the mountain. Good restaurant and fantastic point in the terrasse for birds observatory. Difficult to get hotwater in the shower
- Maloney (6/5): Great staff and setting but... - The location, setting and staff are outstanding. The hummingbird feeding station is renowned for a reason! The breakfasts were great and again, the staff are awesome. The cabin was moldy and worn out with ugly colors and uncomfortable musty beds. Perhaps the other cabins are better but the bigger one was not a good value.
- Tom (10/5): Nice, affordable stay in a great location! - Convenient location Nothing
- Michael (8/5): Excellent Feeding Area - for Birds… - Excellent feeding area for birds at the restaurant. A balcony at the cottage. Small cottage without a view from the balcony. No alcohol at the restaurant and a not very impressive trout speciality.
- Angela (5/5): I would have stayed elsewhere if I had know there was no hot water. - The cabin was well equipped for coffee and had a refrigerator and microwave. Amazing hummingbird watching in the cafe. Surrounded by nature. No hot water! This was not expected and it was a cold day and we were unable to shower. The twin bed was uncomfortable
- Sanyamsethi (9/5): Superb - The couple who owns the lodge are just the nicest people. The place itself is so serene and peaceful. They own a restaurant as well that they run together right across the street. They make the food with love with fresh farm to table ingredients. The restaurant is quite popular and all bird tour buses stop there for a view from their patio or a fresh meal. The lodge has another pizzeria right next to it, so two eateries, a stone's throw away. Yet, it's quiet and doesn't feel crowded.
We stayed there for two days and felt attached to the place and the people.
The room itself was clean and spacious. It had a coffee station, towels, a small electric fireplace/heater - the basics you would need. The pillows were very uncomfortable for me. That is the only reason I have 9 and not 10 on comfort. Within the cabin, the facilities are all provided, but don't expect luxury.
- Anna (10/5): Great place to spend two days when traveling from San Jose to the coast - We booked two nights here. The lodges were very sweet, cozy for two people. There was a queen sized bed and a single bed. There was hot water in the shower. The true highlight was the adjacent restaurant, Miriam’s Quetzals which belongs to the same owners. We arrived bit after 7 pm, when it closes however they offered us to stay for dinner, which we very much appreciated. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic, great dishes, excellent coffee and the view was simply amazing. They feed birds and so while having breakfast you can observe Colibris, tucans etc from up close!! We highly recommend. Also they do help organize guides for quetzal spotting, if desired. The area is great for hiking, nearby is a waterfall hike and further down the valley is the savegre area for longer hikes.
- Alexey (10/5): Exceptional - Very cozy, comfortable, very thought through place! We have truly enjoyed it. Although it it very cold during the night this place have very comfortable beds with numerous blankets and a little portable heater. The dining area is very clean and well planned. In addition they have excellent restaurants with birdwatching across the street, which is phenomenal for photographers. The property located in close proximity to scenic hiking trails with waterfalls and forest. The place is very kid friendly, highly recommended Nothing not to like
- Shalin (7/5): Good - The view was magnificent the staff was great. The size of the room was reasonable. Breakfast was good. The view from the restaurant was magical. It was cold and the small heater didn't do the job.
- Susana (9/5): Superb -
- Reinhold (9/5): Very friendly hosts, perfect location to see birds -
- Michele (10/5): Great value for money , very comfortable stay - Very comfortable cabins, with coffee , toiletry and towels .
We had a short one night stay here , we arrived late due to an accident, but the staff were on hand for our late check-in.
Lovely breakfast, with loads of birds feeding in the garden ..
- Luis (10/5): Nice log cabin in San Gerardo - Cozy, clean, nice comfy beds. The free coffee was delicious! The owners very friendly and accommodating. Very good value.
- Marie-eve (9/5): It the weather is nice, I recommend 100%. - Miriam was an excellent host. I went for super at her restaurant across the street. She is very welcoming, and offered to book me with a local guide to go see quetzales the next morning.
There is a balcony behind the restaurant where you can see a lot of different birds. Amazing. It was raining and cold the whole time I was there. I wasn't expecting that cold. The shower didn't have hot water, but at least I had a small heater in the cabin and enough covers in the bed.
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Ruben66 (10/5): Exceptional - It's comfortable and there is everything that you would need.
The host is very nice Nothing, everything was good
- John (8/5): If you want to see quetzals, this is the place - This is a family owned cabin business with a small restaurant and great deck to view a large variety of birds including the infamous Quetzal. The stay was minimalist cabins but worth the stay to see many Quetzals. Restuarant has good selection of meals. The family were very friendly and helpful and even came to let us know that the quetzals were arriving for the late afternoon visit. We also had a great hike down to the waterfall. Wifi was slow, our cabin was cramped, linens and pillows were older, but the bathrooms were nice and modern.
- Lisa (8/5): Very good -
- John (10/5): Incredible staff and location - The place was incredible the owners even helped to find clothes for my kids, I will definably be back in the future. For the price this was on of the best places I've stayed in Costa Rica and the climate was absolutely incredible. I liked it all
- Eric (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zhe (5/5): Charged more for using a credit card - I booked this hotel from book.com, which clearly stated that I will need to pay a total of $77, including tax, and credit cards are accepted for payment. However, the hotel preferred cash, but I didn’t have enough cash with me when checking in. And then I was charged $87 because I used credit card. Booking.com didn’t mention that I have to pay $10 more for using credit card for this hotel.
- Artur (10/5): very close to a lovely restaurant owned by the owners of the facility -
- Andrea (8/5): A beautiful stay in San Gerardo - We loved Mirjam, her mom and the whole staff. They were all very friendly and helpful! they run a small restaurant just in front the cabin, from there you have a privileged spot on the terrace to look out for birds while enjoying a beautiful batido de moras! Breakfast was also great! Mirjam was also helpful in finding a guide for the Quetzal tour! It was very basic for the price we paid. The heater was a bit noisy and also the blankets weren’t super clean.
- Yvonne (6/5): Pleasant - The owner is really friendly. Across the street is her restaurant, Miriams Quetzals. It is a great place for birdwatching and breakfast in the morning. For dinner we liked the trout. The cabin does not have much space. The sink and toilet are very small and there was not much warm water coming out of the shower. Towels quiet old. One of the two beds was horrible, not good for your back. Gets cold in the evening, but a lot of blankets. No heater.
- Yonatan (8/5): Nice place. Nice owner. Cold place but a lot of blankets and heating on demand. I recommend. -
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional -
