Guest Reviews
- David (9/5): Great for hiking - Interesting building & location
Delicious breakfast.
Host had good local knowledge Food a bit over priced
- Rachael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steffi (10/5): Exceptional - A very beautiful place in a small village with the most amazing view. It s a calm place to rest your soul. The rooms are very clean, the beds cosy and comfortable. You can feel the owner's love for the place everywhere in the details.
I would love to come back again one day. Everything was great ๐
- Barrie (10/5): A fabulous wonderful place - Amazing
- Veronika (10/5): Exceptional - Great place where to stay during the hiking ๐
Really nice people work here (also with their amazing dog). Highly recommend!
- Liv (10/5): Beautiful mountain getaway - Beautiful scenery with local cave dwellings and trails right by the property. Nicola was a great host - he gave us such great recommendations, excellent cook, and very nice guy. I hope we can return!
- Emila (10/5): Superb - must visit - Superb location on the island. Lots of character and great host with adorable dog Canario.
Very clean, comfortable beds and hot water which for a mountain refugee in such a remote location was really impressive.
- Jenny (10/5): Exceptional - Location superb, lovely atmosphere, good value, great breakfast Limited dinner choice... Tricky to drive out at night
- Joshua (9/5): Cosy, well appointed accomodation, highly recommend. - Nicola was a fantastic host at Refugio El Hornillo, welcoming guests by name on arrival. The place itself is a small and rustic settled in a beautfully remote part of the island. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a disconnect from society. No fault of anyone, but the roads on Gran Canaria require a bit of driving skill and a lot of concentration. Given the remote location, I would recommend considering the driving times and arrival time accordingly.
- Farrukh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tiernan (10/5): really enjoyed a short stay definitely hope to get back - the location is perfect for walking.
Accommodation is basic but very comfortable. Itโs a really welcoming refuge in the mountains.
lovely wholesome food Absolutely nothing
- David (9/5): Beautiful location, convenient, and great staff - Very conveniently located refuge within a valley. Fantastic staff, speak great English and always happy to help. Delicious fresh bread and tasty meals on offer. Excellent spread of options for breakfast. Stunning views from the terrace. Would have loved a bigger portion for the price of dinner, and more vegan friendly options!
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Petra (10/5): Exceptional - El Hornillo is a true gem, great location for hikers and nature lovers, wonderful breakfast buffet and nice dinner in cosy atmosphere, welcoming host who shared his knowledge about the area and advised us on best hikes (it is so rare to be hosted by a real person these days) I hope to be back some day! Nada
- Doris (9/5): Superb -
- Michal (9/5): Superb - Great views, peace and quiet
- Agnethe (10/5): We had a wonderful stay at this genuinely beautiful and special place. Reccomended! -
- Barbara (10/5): Fabulous stay in hidden valley - We were walking south to north over the island. The refugio fabulous set in a very quiet valley, where once 300 people lived in caves. The refugio used to be the school house.
The owner Nicole was very friendly, spoke English and provided us with lasagna and desert. Breakfast was delicious
Nicole explained a great route to follow for our day of walking via the campsite of tamadaba and down into Puerto de la nueves.
We had booked a dorm room, but on arrival we asked for a double which we got.
- Emanuela (9/5): A very pleasant stay, the best I had so far on Gran Canaria. - Great location and in excellent conditions. (Not a hostel). The site also displays a selection of photographs from the local archive as well as other cultural items that give you a glimpse into life on the island, so you get a small museum experience on top of everything else. Also, although the restaurant does not technically cater for vegans, I was able to spend two days here eating all I needed to eat for breakfast and dinner. Nothing
- Natalie (10/5): An exceptional place - A steep road down takes you to a small square with an old little church and Refugio Hornillo next to it, a truly exceptional and romantic remote location in the mountains. The place has a very nice and unique atmosphere. The homemade food is delicious and the rooms are super clean. The host is very social, kind and helpful at times, and a bit grumpy at other times - depening on what you're asking, I guess. Nevertheless, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to visit again.
- Kim (9/5): Superb - Fantastic place, great breakfast. Simple but delicious dinner.
- Tanel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Waldemar (9/5): Quiet & peaceful place with friendly atmosphere in nature - Friendly and interested owner, willing to help with logistics and travel planning. Good and healthy food, quiet and clean place. Be careful with the narrow streets getting there. One option to get there is from San Pedro by hiking up and stay there then.
- Attila (10/5): Chill out at the end of the world - Kindness of Nicola, Luciana & Ramon, Nicola's delicious soups and breakfast, comfortable bed Everything fine
- Attila (10/5): Chill, beauty of nature, kind staff - Location, view, kindness of staff, delicious breakfast. Nothing
- Freya (9/5): Simply fantastic, donโt miss this one - We had the 4person dorm to ourselves so plenty space, fresh air and a clean bathroom and rooftop terrace. Very affordable dinner and breakfast Getting there by foot takes you a small half hour over asfalt, but it was really worth it!
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb -
- Bugis (10/5): Exceptional - Awesome place with friendly people
- Luzia (10/5): Exceptional - Very quiet place in a beautiful landscape. Perfect if you seek peace away from party and crowds.
Very nice owner and great traditional food.
- Ivans (10/5): Perfect place in the mountains :) - A complete feeling of being a guest in somebody's home, this feels more like an exceptionally good airbnb than typical booking.com hotel - food was delicious and homemade, host offered great suggestions about the island. Location is perfect for anybody who likes hiking and/or twisty road, views are breathtaking, beds are very good, everything was very clean. And, of course, value for money is so high it's simply insane. Will be back again!
- Rosanna (10/5): Hikers Delight - El Hornillo was truly an extraordinary experience and a wonderful place for hikers. The owner knows a lot about the tracks on Gran Canaria and cooks very delicious and typical canarian dishes in the evening with a lot of care and love. I felt very welcome and comfortable and not only enjoyed the hot shower after a long hike but also one day off on the beautiful rooftop terrace. It is a remote and quiet place where you can relax and enjoy.
- Tomasz (10/5): Perfect place to regenerate! - The host is incredibly welcoming and friendly! He was able to give me advice on my hiking trip and helped me to plan a safe hiking route to Tejeda. The place is very clean and comfortable. Incredible, felt just like I was at home, especially I really like the food they offered.
- Nikai (9/5): Peacefull ,quiet and in a beautiful location . - Location was beautiful and peaceful and the refugio was quaint and comfortable with a nice roof terrace .
- Boris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lena (10/5): Grounding, tranquil, peaceful - This is the most mesmerizing and peace giving place to start your hike or to calm your mind. So happy to have found this place! The only thing I didn't like was that I didn't stay longer.
- Bendeguz (10/5): Exceptional - I was walking across the island, and this was my last night before finishing my journey. Every moment in this place was magical. It felt like the history of the village was flowing through me. The cave houses, the view, the atmosphere, everything. Thank you Nicola for telling me about the history of the place, and for the delicious meals. I wish i can come back later!
- John (10/5): Lovely quiet place in a wonderful quiet location - Lovely place in the mountains with a fantastic view. Ideal for exploring the spectacuilar natural environment, one way or another. Friendly staff in a place that is great for recharging your batteries, psychologically speaking, I mean.
- Andrea (8/5): Very welcoming staff and good, local food - Fantastic rural hotel, wonderful position
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ana (10/5): Great location with comfortable bedrooms and a nice host that prepares delicious dinner and breakfast every day - The location was amazing with beautiful views Everything was good
- Carla (10/5): Inspiring! - It was an exceptional stay for us - lovely stuff, beautiful view, comfortable beds, quietness, no mass tourism, mountains around, supertasty homemade breakfast, cozy dinners and interesting talks. We miss you guys!!!
- Pawel (9/5): Superb -
- Philipp (9/5): Great place for spending a night during your hike. - Beautiful location, we spent a night at el hornillo while hiking to tamadaba and it was worth it! Great location in the mountain cliffs, very kind team and very tasty food, thank you! Everything was fine
- Tadeusz (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jeremy (10/5): Exceptional place to stay for serious walkers and explorers of the island. - Exceptional owner and staff, deeply knowledgeable about Gran Canaria and the history and cultural contexts of the island, and making their own valuable contribution to sustaining all of that, friendly, ethical, hard working on behalf of their guests. The food was local, freshly prepared, nourishing, delicious. Nada
- Andrius (10/5): Exceptional - I loved everything. The owner, Nicola is a valuable source of knowledge about hiking and history of the place. Breakfast was superb and beds comfortable. I believe I will plan another hike that will have me stay in this place. By the way, El.Hornillo is a very unique place worth exploring.
- Bob (9/5): Magic! - Superb location: one of the best views one could dream of: rugged mountains, green valleys and not so far away, the blue sea. Right next to mountain trails. Very friendly staff and Nicola, the owner and a trained mountain guide, will tell you everything about all hiking options nearby and further afield and is really knowledgeable about local fauna and flora. That I had to fly back home. :-)
- Matti (9/5): Peaceful haven - The dormitory was clean and spacious. Excellent views from the terrace. We liked the ambiance of the whole place, very peaceful and remote. Simple and good food, friendly owners.
- Keith (10/5): A Great refugio well worth a stay great views food excellent - Clean well kept
