Guest Reviews
- Gregor (10/5): We had a wonderful and welcoming stay at Amba Lodge during our trip to Lalibela - We had an amazing time staying as a family of three at Amba Lodge. After travelling in Ethiopia for nearly two weeks already, we stayed a couple of nights with the aim to slow down a bit and recover. Amba lodge delivered. It is a small guesthouse run by Gashaw and his family and they made us feel welcome and well looked after from the first to the last minute. We enjoyed the very familiar atmosphere, the great location close to the churches of Lalibela and the host's intimate knowledge of the area. (Of course,) we also hired Gashaw as our guide for most of the time in Lalibela, visiting the churches and for a hike from monastery to monastery. Coming home felt like coming home, the home cooked food was excellent and our coffee ceremony a highlight every time. We would come back any time again. For us, it was what we were looking for and the perfect stay and base for the area. There was nothing we did not like about Amba Lodge. However, visiting Lalibela may be not be for the faint hearted at the moment. This is nothing within the control of our hosts but simply a result of the political instability - the whole area and most of the country are highly dependent on tourism to continue and, in fact, to pick up again. Overall, we had such a great stay in Ethiopia, but it makes you feel sad for every operator and everyone trying to make a living, that there are so very few travellers there. On the one hand, this could be considered a real blessing for the independent traveller - there were probably about 15 tourists in total across the churches during the time we visited. On the other hand, it's a blessing in disguise: the city is nearly empty, hotels and shops are closed, and the infrastructure that used to host many, many more visitors is often in decay - it can feel like COVID lockdowns never ended. But political instability is real, and aspects of life that most people visiting from stable, more developed countries may find challenging. Monitoring the current situation is part of a visit. However, we never felt unsafe and, on the contrary, were made very welcome by nearly everyone we met - especially in Lalibela and at Amba Lodge.

- Black (9/5): Great hotel & great staff, new facility - The location is perfect if you want to see the historic churches in Lalibela. Hot water, gorgeous view & great breakfast (fresh fruit from the hotel's garden & local produce) The wifi's a little spotty
- Wilman (10/5): - The hospitality from the owner was the best. Great person!
- Sarka (10/5): - My stay at the Amba Hotel was amazing. The view from the room was incredible, it almost felt unreal how beautiful it was 🥰 The staff were also very helpful and friendly.

- Ian (10/5): Amazing!! - One of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at! The clean and comfortable room plus the unbelievable view is unmatched! I also really enjoyed the breakfast and dinners. But the best part is the family that runs the hotel. They are the nicest people and they treat you like one of their own. I highly recommend
- Christian Antonio (9/5): - Fantastic customer service skills from Gashaw and team. He can organise everything and make your stay fee every time comfortable. I can fully recommend this Lodge It is located 30 min walk from churches but can enjoy a great view from mountains

- James (9/5): Great stay on a budget in Lalibela with expert tour guide! - Amba was perfect for a quick solo trip to Lalibela. The rooms are spacious and clean, and with balconies providing amazing views of the area. Also, the star viewing at night is breathtaking.
Gashaw is a true asset for this place. He creates an open atmosphere in the dining area that makes it easy to interact with the other guests over meals. He also was a perfect tour guide for visiting the churches, and extremely knowledgeable about the entire area.
I would not hesitate to stay at Amba again! The internet was a little spotty at times, but it may just depend on which room you have.
- Javier.CR (9/5): - Personal muy atento y ubicación tranquila con vistas a la montaña muy bonitas.
- Tennille (10/5): - Excellent hosts, food was great and the view is amazing Wifi is spotty
- Moreau (10/5): - The place is beautifull, rooms are spacious and have amazing view to watch the sunset over the mountains.
Gashaw is an amazing host, and makes you feel more like you are hosted at a friend's rather than hotel.
And because the man has many skills, take him as guide to visit the churches.
- Cueva (10/5): - Great host, super tasty breakfast. Calm area near restaurant. You can also order dinner in there if you feel tired
- Sophie (10/5): Cozy stay in Lalibela - The view from the room was exceptional. The facilities were clean and new. The host was the most warm and welcoming!
- Araba (10/5): Reset for the body mind and soul - A Truly Life-Changing Stay — Mind, Body, and Soul
From the moment I arrived, everything was seamless. The pickup was well organized and easy, and the welcome coffee ceremony was the most beautiful introduction to Lalibela — warm, grounding, and unforgettable.
Breakfast was all organic and local: fresh honey, eggs, and milk, most of it coming directly from the garden and the surrounding community. Every meal was cooked at my request by Gashaw’s wife, whose dishes were infused with genuine care. Her food was delicious, nourishing, and honestly the kind of wholesome cooking you feel in your spirit.
The lodge owner, Gashaw, is not only a gracious host but also an exceptional guide. His depth of knowledge about the churches built under King Lalibela is profound. Visiting the churches with him is like stepping into a supernatural realm. The connection to the 12th century — to every person who shaped the patina on those floors and walls — is powerful, humbling, and truly life changing.
If you need a reset, this is the place. Here, you fill your mind and spirit with endless possibility and greatness. I slept with my curtains open, stars covering the sky. At dawn, the faint sound of donkeys rising from the valley greeted me as the sun warmed the day.
No plastics. No takeaway packs. Just clean, wholesome living — perfect for the mind, body, and soul.
I will return There was nothing I didn't like.
- J (10/5): Výborný poměr cena / výkon, čistota, velmi milý personál - Velký a velmi čistý pokoj s balkonem, ze kterého byl nádherný výhled do údolí. Pohodlné postele. Na uvítanou kávový rituál. Výborné snídaně - velký výběr. Velmi milý, ochotný a nápomocný personál s výbornou angličtinou.
- Andrii (10/5): - Good value for this money. The owner helped organize a transfer from the airport. Great view from the room, clean room. Delicious breakfast, I recommend.
- Popovici (10/5): I felt safe, had good food cooked directly by the owners, and whenever I needed help or guidance, the owners were very a - Clean and amazing mountains view from room and balcony.
- ELENA (10/5): Absolutely recommended - If you are looking for a comfortable, centrally located accommodation, managed by the kindest people, please look no further. The room was spacious, impeccably clean, with a stunning view. Food was of great quality and prepared with love. Couldn't recommend this place more.
Mr. Gashaw, was kind, attentive, caring and very knowledgeable of the area.
- Terricy (10/5): Perfect host at Lalibela - Throughly enjoyed staying at the Amba Lodge. Gashaw and family were warm and wonderful hosts. Room was simple, clean and comfortable with the most amazing view from the terrace.
The meals served at the Lodge are generous portions and we started the day with healthy fruits and honey.
Gashaw picked us up at the airport and arranged all the visit itinerary.
We also enjoyed a lovely short trek up at the Asheton Maryam monastery for some fantastic views with Gashaw as guide. We really appreciate that Gashaw never sells us anything we did not want. We had a peaceful trip without worrying about anything.
- David (10/5): Very satisfying experience. - My Girlfriend and I loved the experience at Amba Lodge. Firstly, Gashaw and his wife Aberash are excellent hosts, very friendly and attended to all of our needs without hesitation. Gashaw personally picked us from the airport and transported us to the hotel where traditional hot coffee was waiting for us. The rooms are spacious with excellent views of the mountains, valley and spectacular sunsets. The rooms are clean with comfortable beds, Fresh clean towels and Running Hot water for showers. The WiFi worked well and the staff was extremely helpful. I would recommend Amba Lodge as the go to place when visiting Lalibela. That we had to leave..
- Michal (10/5): Great view, food and charming owners! - Beautifully located property at the cost of a hill. Outstanding view at the valley and mountains. Great dinner and breakfast with fresh fruits and home made honey. The owner and his family were very charming hosts. Highly recommended place for overnight stay when visiting Lalibela churches. Nothing :))
- Theodore (10/5): Gashaw and his wife Amare were excellent hosts made me feel like a cousin coming to visit! - Gashaw and his wife Amare were excellent hosts and are the perfect examples of why I stay at hotels instead of AirBnBs:
They greeted me when I arrived, made a superb breakfast of fresh fruit, homemade bread, local honey, an omelette, and excellent strong coffee. They also provided suggestions about sites to see and made me ginger tea when they noticed I had a slight cold.
The location was walkable to dining, shopping and the Lalibela church complex. The room was clean with a great view, (see photos) comfortable bed, nice hot water shower, and the hotel's exterior with custom rock work and nice landscaping made my stay comfortable and enjoyable.
The WiFi is decent, and the dining area was a nice place to have coffee and a conversation.
In short, they made me feel like their favorite cousin coming to visit. Honestly, it would be nitpicking to mention anything.
- Bahar (10/5): Wonderful experience - I had a wonderful two-day stay in Lalibela. My room looked at the valley and mountains. The owner of the hotel is very interested. He was there every time I needed it and he immediately met my needs. Hot water, internet, comfortable beds, warm welcome, great breakfast and smiling face. I hope I come back .
- Alexander (9/5): Amazing view with great breakfast and superb hospitality - All the rooms have a beautiful view over Lalibela valley. Gashaw the owner is very knowledgeable about Lalibela’s history, as he is also a tour guide.
WiFi is available and very good. Shuttle service is included. Best of all is the very good breakfast. Simple but delicious. Everything was ok, and when something was needed owner will always help.
- Anna (10/5): Clean room with great view and good service. - The location was excellent. The transport to and from airport was good. It was very clean with wonderful traditional breakfast. Staff was very accommodating to meet needs and provide wifi.
- Gilbert (10/5): I Hope success for this incredible hotel - A new place amazing in lalibella large room nice view very good food and the owner is a fantastique guide to visit the church 👍
- Paulo (10/5): Fantastic accommodation and the best view in Lalibela. - Fantastic accommodation and the best view in Lalibela.
Mr Gashaw was an excellent host and everything went perfectly, from the transport to and from the airport to the reception at the lodge. We felt like we were at home and welcomed into the family.
The room was large and very clean, as was the bathroom. The mattress was the most comfortable I've slept on this holiday, and the bed linen was very clean and smelled fresh. The Wi-Fi worked very well.
Breakfast was great, with fresh homemade bread, honey, fresh fruit, tea and we had the famous Ethiopian coffee made exclusively for us, with the whole process and ritual of preparation.
All the rooms have a magnificent view and you can breathe in the pure mountain air from the balcony.
Mr Gashaw was also our guide on the visits to the churches and proved to be very knowledgeable about the history of the churches and their symbolism. He also took us to excellent restaurants and we were able to enjoy a few moments of everyday life in Lalibela with him.
I highly recommend this accommodation in Lalibela and Mr Gashaw's guiding service. I really liked everything
- Aaf (10/5): Exceptional - Great, clean and spacious hotel with delicious breakfast.
