Guest Reviews
- Eva (9/5): - Amazing location, friendly owners
- Oliver (10/5): Out of this world -
- Mieke (7/5): - Omgeving. Ruim huis. Onduidelijke communicatie ter plekke.Even zoeken ontbijt was ook niet duidelijk geregeld. Wel vriendelijke mensen..
- Manuel (10/5): -
- Roel (8/5): Onvergetelijk.
Tierliebe vorausgesetzt. Für uns war das toll!!!
- Rebecca (10/5): - Alison is a wonderful host. We had an issue accessing the property on the first day due to an unusual and very uncharacteristic recent rainstorm, but Alison rushed to pick us up in the Jeep and ensure we reached the lodge safely. The stay is perfect for anyone who loves animals and the outdoors, especially cats! I would 100% recommend a stay here and plan to visit again one day. The only issue we had was our inability to get to the property on foot on the first evening, but this was dealt with brilliantly and we couldn't fault anything to do with the weather really!
- Martínez (4/5): - Here is an honest review. There are things we liked about our stay in Rivendell and things we did not. Before getting into that, we should preface this review by saying that Rivendell is clearly not a place which is meant to afford the traveller all the usual luxuries of a hotel. We booked knowing that in advance.
Now, it must also be said that Allison herself was lovely and hospitable. And it cannot be denied that the location is breathtaking. The job Allison does for the animals living there (and there are more than a few) is admirable. We also liked being around them - but not everyone might. Here are the issues we had.
1) The journey to Rivendell is difficult; the road just to the parking is dangerous and should be highlighted in the description so people are aware at least. More to the point, the path you have to walk after the public parking is across a rough river bed (on, not alongside) and finally an ascent which unfit or elderly would be unable to make. We were told by one of the guests that they had to wait for hours to get across due to the flooding.
The check in stated on the booking is until 8pm, however, Allison told us on the day we were meant to arrive that we should not arrive later than 6pm (7pm at the latest) due to the darkness - which we later found out was due to the challenging journey there. Unlike the description, there is no street parking, and the accomodation is not in a residential area. The walk can take more than 20 minutes - especially is you are carrying anything heavy. There are two crossings through the river before you take the concrete path uphill. There are no signs to Rivendell until you get to this path. This could be confusing and it would be easily helped by transparency on the description. You can get a lift up in Allison's Jeep, but it costs 5 euros per person and you need to book in advance.
We were glad to have brought our head torch which we found key to make out wya across the river specially.
There is no parking. The parking is public and it's based in the base of the Caldera de Taburiente in the opposite side of the river to Rivendell. Anyone can park there and it has limited space. It wasn't too busy during the three days we stayed around.
2) The smell of poo in the house we stayed in. The loo is by the kitchen area. Toilet paper is expected to be put into a bin (fair enough), however, there is no extraction fan in the bathroom, and the bin was not changed during our three nights stay, so it smelled pretty bad - both in bathroom and kitchen area.
- Judith (10/5): Rivendell - the perfect name for this haven - We loved the location, the people and the house. If you know Tolkien, you'll understand why Alison calls it Rivendell. It is so peaceful, the views are wonderful and the air is so clear. The walks we did from the house were fantastic. We made sure we had all the food we needed for 3 days. The shared kitchen is well equipped. There was a film night while we were there, everyone was invited and popcorn was shared. The animals are all quiet and friendly, but not intrusive. We definitely hope to return. The path to Rivendell is steep and takes around 15 minutes to walk from the car park. It is definitely worth the effort though. Enjoy it!
- Juan (10/5): Inoubliable - Magnifique emplacement , personnes très accueillantes . Un séjour inoubliable.
- MERCE (8/5): -

- Simona (10/5): Truly one of the most beautiful and peaceful stays I’ve ever had. - Absolutely magical place. The surroundings are breathtaking. Pure nature, mountains, peace and quiet. Alison is an amazing host: incredibly friendly, helpful, and always quick to answer any question or help solve anything you need. Yes, you park a bit lower and walk up, but if you have a backpack and a little sense of adventure, it only adds to the charm of this unique, remote spot. For me it was not a problem 😊
- stefan (9/5): -
- Anna (10/5): - Miejsce cudowne, z dala od tzw. Cywilizacji.
- Janis (10/5): - Nice charming place in rural area - surrounded by banana trees. The walk to the lodge is a bit steel
- Dawid (1/5): -
- Selina (9/5): -
- Maja (10/5): Exceptional - wonderful location and proprety
- Oliver (10/5): Amazing lodge with amazing host and amazing view right at the border of the national park - -amazing spot right at the border of the national park
- the super amazing view from the logge
- super nice host Alison and Alexis
- the tent in the pool ist a very interesting accomodation with a lot of private space
- all the cute cats and digs, especially Mr Sunday, the cutest dog ever
- two shared kitchens to use which are good equipped
- free tea and coffee
- etc etc. etc. Both following points were no problem for us at all but might be challenging for some people:
- If you have a car: you can not park your car right at the lodge. You can park it at a public car park, which is safe. And than you have to walk the last 900 m with 60 m in height, but you can arrange a transfer by the host from the car park to the lodge
- if you have no car (like us): shopping for food is not so easy. It is a 5 km hike one way to the next supermarkt (Lidl in Los Llanos) or 4 km from the car park if you use transfer
- Merel (8/5): Very good - The pool
The nature
People and vibes
Sweet cats Too much dogs in the kitchen
- Beatrix (10/5): Unforgettable place - The host, Alison, puts her whole heart in running and developing this place. Staying here is a truly unique experience. The photos do paint a kind of accurate picture, but it's nothing compared to the feeling of being present there, surrounded by those green mountains, relaxing in that complete calm and quiet atmosphere.
The two of us reserved a private room in the 2-room guesthouse: it had a super comfortable bed (I honestly didn't expect it to be so good :)), and Alison's paintings on the wall added to the nice atmosphere. We loved waking up to the sight of the lush green forest in front of one of the windows and being able to peek around and see if we can spot some of the cute cats and dogs.
As we came for mostly hiking on the island, it was important to us to be able to put our sandwich ingredients in a fridge - the solution here is perfect for that, there is a huge shared fridge in the hostel building where guests can put their name on a personal box. It's great how solar power is enough to provide sufficient energy for all the basic needs here. Maybe it was just me or just that occasion, but the water wasn't hot enough for thorough dishwashing.
- Marie-kristin (10/5): Magical experience with the kindest host and the most beautiful landscape around. - I had the most amazing magical time at the lodge. Alison is the kindest soul, I met the kindest people there, the place and it’s location are most magical in the mountains under the stars and I loved all the cute dogs and cats around.
- Oliver (10/5): Amazing lodge in the national park with superfriendly hosts - - Amazing location of the hostel right in the national park
- super friendly host
- nice 5 bed dorm
- double rooms have a private kitchen and toilet only shared by the 2 double rooms. But double rooms can also use the shared kitchens of the dorm and the hostel public rooms
- the pool
- all the cute cats and dogs. Especialy Mr Sunday, the cutest dog ever. Was no problem for us but might be one for someone:
- if you have a car you can not park at the lodge. You have to hike 900 m to the lodge from the carpark. The hike is medium in difficulty. But the host is offering transfer to the car park if arranged 24 hours in advance
- if you have no car you have to hike to the lodge. The closest bus stop and supermarket in Los Llanos is 4.8 km away by feet (250 m elevation gain).
- Kristina (8/5): Very good - It was quiet and the view was wonderful The road to get there was a bit difficult at the end but it was all together ok
- Laurenz (10/5): Exceptional - Paradise in Earth. There ist nothing more to say you have to discover for yourself.
- Aleksandr (9/5): Magical place in a unique location with plenty of cats and dogs for company. Will definitely return! -
- Nina (10/5): I felt welcome in paradise, surrounded by lovely staff, guests and a green barranco. -
- Fintan (9/5): Superb - Incredible views every morning and starry skies in the evening. Really surrounded by nature. Hiking up the valley is incredible. Allison was super nice and always available to answer our requests. Breakfast was good with many ingredient options, but you need to make it yourself. Bathroom can be busy in the mornings when there's a lot of people staying. Same with the outdoor kitchen. Be prepared for the very steep hike. Next time we'll book the Jeep service for our arrival.
- Gregor (10/5): Exceptional - My second stay here, and for good reason - Alison has created a magical place. It won't be for everyone so read the reviews carefully, but if it is your kind of place there are few places like it.
- Stephen (10/5): Excellent - A very different type of stay but unique and stunning in the mountains. Good socials and Alison is super friendly and helpful. You need to love cats, dogs and other animals 😊
- Gareth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place. If you don't like cats and dogs, it's probably not the place for you.
- Nigel (9/5): Superb -
- Radoslaw (10/5): Exceptional - Quiet location surrounded by nature at the entrance to the Caldera. The downside could be the distance to the next town (Los Llanos) which is approx. 5km but it wasn't a problem for me. Allison and Alexis made me feel like home. There are a few friendly dogs and cats residing at the property so you should like animals. It was a wonderful and relaxing stay for me. I wish I could have stayed longer.
- Clement (10/5): Come here if you are seeking some peace and quiet. - Alison is a warm and gregarious host of a wonderful and isolated hostel. Rivendell is one of the most remote hostels close to the Caldera National Park and the environment reflects this. Come here if you are seeking some peace. The night sky is breathtaking - you can see the stars without light pollution. The views down the valley are second to none. The hiking trail along the riverbed into the Caldera National Park is very convenient. The facilities are very good, the breakfast is simple but satisfying (bread, home made yoghurt, fruit, muesli, etc). If you don't like cats or dogs, stay away, as Alison's pets freely wander around the main areas of the property. If you are not physically fit and do not have a car, think twice about this hostel as it takes at least 1.5 hours to hike out to Los Llanos (1 hour if you are fit) - taxis don't like coming to pick you up from the car park, though it is easier to get a taxi from Los Llanos.
- P.k. (10/5): Super stay at Allison’s lodge. Very nice and relaxing in the mountains. - The warm welcome and the location. Our room was at a funny place (former swimming pool) perfect for checking out the stars in the night!
Lovely owner, dogs and cats. Would book it again when we are coming to La Palma
- Eden (6/5): Pleasant - the agricultural crops, the pool and the surrounding landscape There was were no refrigerator in the property as stated in the description.
Limited access to the property based on the host that wasn’t consistent available for us.
Excluding of the toilets, every indoor spaces in the property are shared with all guests staying at the lodge.
- Katie (10/5): Exceptional - This is such a special place - the location is just amazing, right in the mountains. A beautiful and peaceful place to relax, on the path of hiking trails, and with a lovely swimming pool looking out over the mountains! Alison is a wonderful host, who puts a lot of love and care into the place and taking care of her guests (and her delightful animals!)
- Silvio (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mika (10/5): Exceptional -
- Raanan (10/5): Perfect for people looking for a lovely, quiet hostel out in nature. - Alison was very helpful even prior to my arrival, providing great directions to the hostel and additional information. During my stay she was super kind and attentive, and it was a great experience staying with her.
- Jean (8/5): Rivendell is a place to keep close to your heart - The location can not be better to start your visit to the Caldera through the river bed. The grounds and houses attract a mixed crowd of backpackers, couples, single travellers that often extend their stay. Beautiful decorations and gardens, some in Hobbit and Elves style. Walkable distance from Los Llanos, but be aware the last hundreds of meters are pretty steep. Shuttle service available € 5. The size of two person bedroom was just enough. Beautiful wall painting though.
The place is self catering, and do not expect too much from the breakfast € 7.5 though fresh eggs from the chickens next door are very tasteful.

- Katinka (10/5): A hidden gem surrounded by beautiful nature - A true gem, fully surrounded by nature. A jaw dropping surrounding, and the best hosts I could wish for. The perfect get away of you want to spend some time in nature. The energy there is really good and the other guests were also amazing. I only stayed for 2 nights, but it feels like home. For sure I will be back. It’s good to know that it’s not easy accessible. You have to walk the last part or they will pick you up with a 4x4. Of course I got too enthusiastic when I saw the pictures so I didn’t read the description well. Luckily they send a message directly after the booking where they explain it again :).
- Vasilisa (10/5): A magical place in the mountains - For me, this place was a kind of paradise. I I love to be right in the middle of the mountains, with incredible views and great stars at night. I enjoyed talking to the other people at the hostel and I felt like I slept really well as well. It’s worth it being in the middle of nature even though you do you have to walk up a steep hill to get there. That really is the purpose that you’re right in the middle of nature, and the experience is otherworldly and incomparable. I think it’s fabulous
- Camacho (10/5): Excellent holidays - The Place is one of the most beautiful I've been, we're surrounded by Nature.
I absolutely loved this experience. Mosquito, if you have repellent will be fine
- Magdalena (10/5): Exceptional - This place is awesome for poeple, who love nature and silence.
- Janis212 (10/5): Like no other place - Extraordinary accommodation of the beaten path. garden, host and pool are like no other. Sustainability is definitely a high priority. Thank for letting me be part of this special place for a couple of days.
- Tetyana (10/5): Exceptional - I was enchanted by this magnificent location, the staff was amazing, the views were breathtaking and I'm already longing to return to this place! This place is a must to visit for anyone who loves hiking and exploring nature.
- Simon (10/5): Friendly hostel in magnificent mountain location with swimming pool. - Magnificent location (but that comes with being isolated). Very friendly atmosphere. Big swimming pool. Limited bathroom facilities sometimes meant waiting.
- Pierre (9/5): Great unique spot in the caldera - This place is definitely unique. Lonely house with the caldera, this is super quiet and views are stunning. There is a strong collective mindset (you’d better speak German though! 😄).
You can start great hikes from there (Brecitos - Taburiente - back). You cook together in the common outdoor kitchen, share nice moments, enjoy the vibe.
Staff is lovely. Including the 6 dogs and cats and guinea pigs!
It has a retreat vibe, you can really relax and breathe up there. It is a must-go if you’re a hostel and hiking person. Obviously the access is quite complex, you need to take a 15€ taxi from Llanos then walk 15’ with a last very steep bit… but that must be the price to pay! Manager offers a 5€ 4x4 pickup at the taxi drop if needed.
Towels are not provided.
- Jens (9/5): Superb - Rivendell is the perfect remote location for those looking to get away from it all, and to take a few days to connect with the surrounding nature and also themselves.
The people and animals here are very welcoming, it quickly felt like I had known them for much longer already.
The vibe is very open, relaxed and bohemian. Living deep in a valley certainly has some drawbacks (going shopping on foot requires an hour hike, for example), but these make this place all the more special. Despite the remoteness, all of the necessary comfort is available though, like good beds, wifi, cosy dorms/rooms and a proper bathroom. These were better than I had expected.
When I visit La Palma again I will try to go back for a few days.
- Harri (9/5): Harri Sutinen - Views were awesome, second to none. Even Dolomites could not compete with this. Place was like community, gathering nice People, mostly hikers. Also lot of animals, so if you like them, good place for you. There wasnt always warm water, but that could have been fixable. As a man from wery north i did not care.
- Shir (9/5): Superb -
- Gregor (10/5): Exceptional - A magical location. This place won't be for everyone so make sure you read through the reviews, but if you want a great location to explore the Caldera before spending the evening relaxing with breathtaking views, friendly dogs running around, and the sort of like-minded people that such a place attracts, you'll love Rivendell.
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mathis (5/5): very nice place in an amazing location but not suited for remote work due to unreliable internet -
- Reuben (8/5): A community minded place, offering great value, in a wonderful, natural, location. - The location is stunning, up in the mountains, with wonderful views. I can see why Alison has called it Rivendell, it is reminiscent of Tolkien's famous valley of sanctuary. She's really made it a beautiful place. Lots of small, creative, touches and decorations make it feel very welcoming for people and animals alike. It offers very good value for money and has clearly earned a loyal following amongst the backpacker community. If you're expecting all the latest mod-cons this may not be the place for you. For example, I had 3 showers during my stay and none of them stayed hot for the whole shower (Alison had informed me this was due to other people washing up at the same time but given the number of guests this might be hard to avoid.)
The rooms themselves are on the small side for doubles, without much clothes storage.
Due to the communal nature of Rivendell, this is a great place to come if you want to meet people but probably not so great if you wanted a lot of privacy or to have a more solitary experience.
- Sebastian (10/5): A different (but lovely) kind of Hostel - I liked the place for its vibe and the lovely people. I think it makes sense to read all the information up front to find out if this hostel is something for you. But I had only good experiences there and cannot wait to come back!
- Zehao (10/5): A wonderful tranquil retreat - A wonderful tranquil retreat, a 15 minute walk up from the parking but well worth it. With an communal kitchen where travelers gather and share their stories, and plenty of areas to sit and admire the view and meditate or read a book
- Antonia (10/5): Great rest at this magical place - I had a beautiful time at this magical place! Alison created a truly wonderful oasis where one can rest after hikes and meet other people. The location is so nice and all th space has been created with lots of Love and care. Thanks!!
- Arnaud (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrzej_sudety (10/5): Superb holiday, I'll be back :-) - The Place is unique, If You fit You love it!
- Arthur (9/5): Staying at Rivendell gave us all a good base for great walking but also the chance to relax - The Hostel Manager Alison added through her artwork and nous for property layout an individual, delightful location I felt everyone who was there whilst I was also enjoyed their stay so no complaints
- Sarah (9/5): A Haven of Peace in La Palma - I stayed with a friend and we loved the place, at the point that it was hard to leave it ! You are in the middle of the nature, surrounded by animals and you can breath peace all around the place. Alison and the people we met there were super nice and we enjoy meeting them. The room where we stayed was clean and the premises very well equipped to cook or relax. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to disconnect and hike around la Palma. Thank you again for our stay!! Just be aware of the hike to access to the place 😂 but you will be rewarded by a beautiful natural scenario!!
- Anatael (8/5): Very good -
- Lilian (8/5): Very good -
- Valentine (10/5): A precious and breathtaking place, for those in search of peace, nature, silence, and authenticity 🙏🏽 -
- Tobias (10/5): Exceptional - It:s a lovely place with lovely people!
- Dmitry (9/5): Superb -
- Janne (10/5): Paradise on earth - Rivendell is a little paradise on earth. The views are stunning and everyone was so friendly, cooking and playing music together. The owner Allison was wonderful! I felt at home from the start here and wish i could've stayed longer! The energy is so special and sacred in this place. If you don't have a car it is quite a long hike from the city los llanos, but you can get a hitchhike or taxi. It is definitely worth it.
- Ľubka (10/5): Exceptional - I Liked the views, the People both working there and other visitors, I Liked the good vibes
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional - Best place on La Palma.
- Miguel (10/5): Exceptional - There,s a special place in La Palma and this is Rivendell.....i went because of a sport competition and i did spent there the time i wish...but 100% i,ll be back longer time
to relax, hike, chill and meet the kind , sweet and nice people that lives / stays there.... The short time i spent there... I wish i could stay longer!
- Georgi (10/5): Exceptional - unforgettable location, welcoming atmosphere.
- Louisa (8/5): Very good - I liked how beautiful the views were and quiet it was !
Close to the waterfall and ... lovely bedrooms and shower.. Nice people and owner was sweet. Definitely would go back! Such nice people Ngl.. the walk up is pretty steep and long 😅 didn't expect it to be that high up ..the pictures on here aren't *that* similar to the real thing ..perhaps need a new slant (zoom out) on the images
- Irina (9/5): Magnificent escape in nature. Private room recommended for quality sleep - Wonderful nature, lovely host, very cute cats and dogs, social atmosphere in the common areas The double bed was rather small for two friends who are not a couple. The water for the shower wouldn’t turn warm, so I decided not to take a shower during my stay there.
- Peter (9/5): Superb - The place is like from a fairytale, very distant, peaceful and nice. Good communication.
- Lee (9/5): Superb -
- Natan (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place to disconnect and detox. The center is in the middle of a beautiful valley with an amazing view of the mountains. It's also very close from several hiking trails. The place is clean and well equipped. The communal outdoor kitchen is an amazing place to cook with a look of the mountains and chat with other travelers. The WIFI is solid. I met people here staying for several weeks while working remotely.
One recommendation: bring food with you on the way up so you can stay in the area for a few days without having to come back down unless you want to. Nothing to dislike but know where you're coming: the center is up a hill, following a steep 15 minute walk up from the parking lot. You get used to it, but it's not a "club med vacation."
If you come by car, you have to walk 15 minutes to get it and then drive for another 20 to reach the nearest town with restaurants, supermarket and that stuff. Come here if you want to be in nature, not if you want to go out every night.
- H.a. (10/5): unique experience away from it all! - what an experience! you’re away from everything that’s not important. great people, both guests and staff and you’re surrounded by stunning views and organic food!
- Johan (8/5): Very good - The location is brilliant! It is very remote but that is the unique selling point. You have to walk a bit but then you are in paradise. Alcohol and smoking is not allowed. I can imagine this, but having a beer every now and then on your holiday, i like ;)
- Adam_han_80 (10/5): An excellent place to stay in the middle of nature. - An unique home, deep in the heart of nature and so beautiful and full of life, energy and happiness. Alison and her family are super warm and friendly. I had a great time socializing and sharing stories with Alison's family and other travelers. Hiked during the day and took a swim in the pool after, a great place to relax and recharge, will definitely go back again:)
