Asked about a change in requirements and got back to us too late to be relevant. Hefty charge to keep one of two rooms booked for check out at 6.30 pm, which due to very low occupancy should have complimentary. Would not stay here again.

There are a good selection of bars, restaurants and convenience stores within a 5 minute walk. The staff we encountered were very helpful at both check in and check out. Unfortunately due to planned excursions we didn’t make breakfast. Correspondence via email was quick. Our room was large and bed comfortable. The property is dated. Our room whilst large and comfortable felt dark and there are limited lights available. I hadn’t realised how cold Johannesburg would be and our room was cold to the point of the bedding feeling damp. We did use the blanket that was provided which helped. There was an AC unit which I presumed doubles up as a heater but we couldn’t get it to work, either the batteries were dead or it was broken. I didn’t report this as it was at night when we got back it was too late. The shower in the bathroom whilst powerful sprays water all over the floor which is rather annoying.

- Abigail (10/5): Very happy days, 3 nights was too short! - Excellent location walking distance to Melville (which is a wonderful choice for a Joburg stay), and with a great view of the Koppies. The property has beautiful vegetation. We loved our upstairs rooms and spent several hours enjoying our balcony breeze and views. Comfortable rooms with style/character. The staff was also friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious! Can't think of anything!

One of the best places I was accommodated so far. Top price/performance ratio with super tasty breakfast. Just few minutes above the guesthouse is the “party” place of Melville with lots of Bars and Restaurants. The owner and its family are very friendly.

- Neil (9/5): Beautiful location, quite central to all relevant areas of Johannesburg, but quiet at the same time. - Agterplaas is rightfully famous for its breakfast, with several choices, including home made freshly baked bread, and a lot of other freshly prepared choices. Not much, except that sometimes, this time only one day during my ten day stay, the water was not running, due to problems at the municipality.

We were welcomed by a very charming and helpful young man and were very comfortable in our rooms. All the staff were wonderful and we had a fabulous breakfast in a lovely farmhouse style dining room. Our rooms were a bit above the main house and we enjoyed sitting on the stoep in the evening looking at koppie across the valley. This is a charming place with great people in a lovely area. Die Zimmer sind auf mehrere Gebäude im schön angelegten Hanggrundstück verteilt. Obwohl die Einrichtung etwas in die Jahre gekommen ist, sind die Zimmer charmant und sehr ruhig - wir haben wunderbar geschlafen. Der Gastgeber hat einer kostenlosen Stornierung zugestimmt. Das eigentliche Gästehaus hat auf uns einen guten Eindruck gemacht, als wir morgens zum Frühstück dort waren ... Dass wir wegen Überbuchung einfach in eine benachbarte Unterkunft verlegt wurden, die weder gelüftet noch beheizt war, so dass ein feucht-kühles Klima in dieser Wohnung geherrscht hat, in dem wir uns nicht wohl gefühlt haben.

La propriétaire nous a autorisé à garder notre chambre jusqu’à l’heure du départ en fin d’après-midi Chambre spacieuse On a eu un sentiment d’appartement non terminé : Il n’y a aucun rideau aux fenêtres et sur la porte vitrée ce qui nuit à l’intimité et perturbe le sommeil La chambre est équipée d’un coin cuisine mais il n’y a aucune vaisselle Il y a des fuites dans les sanitaires Le quartier à proximité est présenté comme animé et convivial, ce qui est le cas si on se contente de boire des cocktails dans la très courte rue (une centaine de mètres à peine) qui jouxte l’hôtel : à part des bars il n’y a ni commerces dignes de ce nom ni rien d’intéressant à visiter

- Luca (8/5): Good stay with great breakfast options, but facilities could be improved - Fantastic traditional Afrikaner breakfast, beds were comfortable, nice aesthetic to the place. The staff were all friendly and there was a private alleyway that gave access to 7th street - where we could find any restaurants we needed. The hot water was unreliable - the first night the hot water barely came through such that the water was only lukewarm, the second night the hot water worked, but would fluctuate between warm and to hot, without turning any taps. We also requested twin beds but they gave us a double saying they missed this request and would split the beds the following day - which they then didn’t do, apparently due to the cleaning staff missing the message to do so. The fridge was also very noisy which made it hard to sleep.

- Bob (8/5): Classic and good guesthouse in Johannesburg in a quit neigbourhood - Breakfast is very good. The staff is very friendly. SWe stayed regularly in Agterplaas in the past The room we had had no view, the window was very smal. That was a pity and a bit dissappointing. We stayed only 3 nights and were out in town most of the day so this was not a big thing. Melville unfortunately has lost a lot of its original vibe and buzz, many shops and bars in 7th Street were closed and to let.

- Houliston (10/5): Authentic experience of old Melville culture - Warm welcome. Hosts went out of their way to make me feel at home. Very peaceful, lots of character. Close to amenities.
