Guest Reviews
- Fransisco (9/5): Pleasantly impressed - Its a beautiful reserve and the most tranquil setting.serviced room.and the cleaning staff was very efficient and made the room up beautifully We loved everything
- Pieter (10/5): The most amazing facilities clean - Breakfast was Exceptional! - The most amazing facilities clean - Breakfast was Exceptional!
- Dalene (10/5): Relaxing stay - Staff were very friendly and helpful. Area is neat and clean. Kitchen has everything if you need something. The pool is lovely to cool off on a warm day.
- Sash (1/5): Disappointed đ - We saw 3 giraffes from a distance Not clean, too close to road. Too many hazards for small child. Not safe, main gate not secure. We found dangerous construction tools laying in a ditch around the property. No clear communication from hosts. The property fixtures were broken/not functional. We did not get the accommodation that was advertised in the pictures and felt unsafe sleeping at the property. The bungalow was old, the roof kept making noises, sleep was impossible. Boasted about fireplace but no fire starter or lighter provided.
- Eugene (10/5): -
- Eksteen (7/5): great stay with a beautiful view - beautiful view, lovely room and space. the fire place was especially nice. the room was clean and the bed was spacious and comfortable. There were no cutlery available for self catering purposes such as plates, utensils etc. No microwave which limited our food options.
- Chumani (10/5): - The gravel leading to the tents is not for every car really.
- Kardos (8/5): -
- Frank (8/5): Impressive natural surroundings with plenty of game all around. Great game drive, very nice shop - The location was magnificent, with impressive nature all around us (including roaming giraffes, gazelles and wildebeest ...)the camping grounds were very spacious and well set up, and facilities clean and well equipped. Especially the kitchen and braai facilities were appreciated as we had to improvise a braai (turned out very well). In the morning we did a game drive which was a lovely experience, even in the rain...very educational and really showed the love and care going into the park. We could easily have stayed another week! The hosts, ranger and staff were all so friendly and welcoming, and doing their utmost to cater to us even though they were all busy with the holiday celebrations. We are a family of six (grown up/adolescent kids) from the Netherlands on a Christmas Holiday road trip along the garden route (full schedule, so only one night stays...). We hope to revisit! Very nice shop also, we are still enjoying the honey! We were informed rather late that there would be no restaurant services on the night of our stay due to a private holiday celebration. This was a bit inconvenient, but we ended up having a very nice braai on the campground.
- Anthony (10/5): Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back again and will recommend to friends and family - Rustic
The views
Reasonable distance to other tents
Ablutions great - wildlife & 4x4 drive (although the map was vague - we were t sure of what trails we should or shouldnât travel , as there were many more than what the map showed - but we are seasoned 4x4 travelerâs So still enjoyed it - we checked out the new boma looks great would like info on this place please - rates of hire etc . Liked the restaurant we ate a delicious lunch - staff were fabulous- lady at reception also professional and very helpful We were in large tent - It rained and water seeped underneath the two single beds across the plywood- meaning we had to walk through puddles to exit the tent . The double bed tent was dry and very comfortable
- Williamson (2/5): We were so looking forward to our stay at Pabala, which turned out to be so disappointing. - The farm cottage was in a good position for scenery. The double bed was comfortable enough. When we arrived at Pabala, we were given keys for the Stone Cottage which was a kilometre down the road. This was not what we booked or paid for. We eventually found out that the Farm Cottage which was where we should be ,had been double booked. After a very long discussion we got into the Farm Cottage. We asked on arrival if we could book a meal for the Friday evening. We were told that the Restaurant was closed. We should have been told about that before we arrived. The meal was to be a celebration of our 55th Anniversary, so we were very upset about that. What should have been a warm welcome to Pabala was exactly the opposite.
The property was very old. There was nowhere to hang clothes. The shelves were made of dirty old boxes joined together. All the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen were ancient and not clean. I would not have used the stove it was filthy. We had to take our own camping chairs with us as there was only a table and 2 benches on the stoep. The windows were all so old and rusty and very difficult to open and close. The curtains were very badly fitted on all the windows. The shower was not at all clean and would not work. We eventually ran the bath tap and the shower came on. On our first night the rain poured down and in the morning it continued. The water began to come into the cottage from under the floor. All our bags were wet and we had to use all the towels to soak up the water. We asked for help but by this time there was water everywhere. We got very little help, and it was obvious that this not a problem that could be solved easily or quickly. We decided at that point that we would leave and go home. So after paying for 3 nights and 4 days we had one night there. We strongly feel that we should be reimbursed for a stay that was so disappointing. We have received no apology even from Pabala.
- Nicolaas (7/5): -
- Rodger (8/5): - Extremely quiet and peaceful. Beautiful scenery No sink in the unit,so difficult to wash cups etc.
Drain was a bit smelly, but think that's due to water shortage or septic tank
- Wilma (10/5): Memorable - Exceptional view Nothing
- Xola (8/5): The place is nice and quiete - Tranquility Uniqueness
- Roberta (5/5): - Abbiamo prenotato le tende, rapporto qualitĂ /prezzo non adeguato Tende e arredo letto erano troppo usurati
- Quentin (8/5): -
- Luanne (7/5): Peaceful - Peaceful, beds were comfy The tents were aging, some of the infrastructure can be repaired.
- Minolta (6/5): -
- Pieter (8/5): -
- Keri (7/5): - We spent a few hours there after a tricky day. It was clean, which Im greatful for. But expensive for a simple tent and few hours. Mostly our doing. I thought I had booked a bigger tent. Photos are what I thought I had booked, vs what I arrived to. Noisy neighbours throughout the night but that's not the venues fault. Will I go again, probably not.
- Selette (7/5): I liked the privacy, very peaceful, the view of as exceptional - The location was perfect, as was they stay. Property has not had a good clean in a long time.
- Prinsloo (10/5): -
- koekemoer (10/5): 11 / 10 - Our Valley View cabin was the best.
Beautiful views and very nice room, I would suggest that they integrate a small braai on the balcony as going down to the lava to braai is not that convenient.
Other than that it was blissfully and very happy. We booked the game drive, our driver Tersius was great lovely one to chat to and very knowledgeable.
Would love to do a baviaans trip with him.
I'll definitely book at Pabala again.
The staff from reception "memory"
To the kitchen ,waitresses and the Bar man Uncle David was great.
- Ben (7/5): -
- Debbie (7/5): Very short overnight stop. - The outlook from our room and veranda was nice. The room had good natural lighting and air flow. Well equipped with all we needed. The shower needs a door as the water went all over the place. The restaurant was closed when we got there at 3pm though google maps said it closed at 5pm so had to drive to Jeffreyâs bay to get dinner. It is not a âhotelâ as we had read somewhere!Very short
- Chantel (10/5): - Everything from the location, views, helpful and friendly staff! It was just amazing! They really went above and beyond to accommodate us and the kids, they made extra effort to entertain our kids! Werner and Jan were incredible! We will return every year!
- Jacques (8/5): Perfect location to relax and have a nice view of nature and the animals roaming there. - The breakfast was great.
The views were amazing and the nature vibe is something I appreciate a lot. Our room was very nice and had everything we needed.
- Dawid (8/5): -
- Hubert (4/5): Good location. Quality of place and service needs improvement. - Location, view, animals Booked with breakfast, but no breakfast available. Sanitary installation very smelly and couldnât be improved despite trying.
- Monson (7/5): Nice environment, good breakfast, good restaurant, large room (honeymoon suite). - Large room, big breakfast. The balcony has a good view of the morning ambient. 1. We expected to spot some animals during the stay or in the mornin. But we see nothing. So the term 'Private Nature Reserve' might be misleading.
2. The room is some 200 meters away on a rocky unpaved road. We don't have a car (our tour guide stays at another place), so we have to walk in the dark after dinner back to the room.
3. The hotel uses a wooden fireplace as a heater. The lighting set is provided. But since we didn't have an experience in lighting up the heater, the fire burnt down not long after. The rest of the night, we survive without a heater.
- Claassen (8/5): Beautiful nature and great variety of almost tame wild types of buck making it most enjoyable. - The location and natural beauty with the variety of wild animals was absolutely amazing. The facilities were clean and well maintained. The mountain road to the campsite was good enough for met to be able to even drive it with my Suzuki Swift. Nothing that I can think of, because the important thing was that the Lady assisting us by the name Memory was an absolute star and could be contacted whenever and was always able to assist with such friendliness, that this was one of the great points of this stay.
- Melissa (10/5): -
- Zondre (5/5): Passable -
- Nico (8/5): Very good -
- Sanet (9/5): Superb - Beautifull place. Friendly host waited until we arrived. A long drive to tents, but worth it. Make sure to take your own food along for lunch or dinner, specially if you arrive late. Excellent breakfast in restaurant with beautifull view. Will stay here again if in the area.
- Clark (7/5): Great -
- Maarten (8/5): NICE LOCATION WITH A LOVELY GAME DRIVE - THE WHOLE CONCEPT WAS NICE THE TENT WAS A LITTLE BIT DAMAGED
- Shailey (7/5): The farm cottage was beautiful! We felt safe, with beautiful views and quiet surroundings. - We LOVED the 3rd option for accomodation.
First option which we booked for, did not meet our expectations, but the staff were amazing to change our accomodation to another unit. Which made for an absolutely lovely stay! Also LOVE the Pabala gin and honey made on the property! The stone cottage is right on the main road to Hankey, with a broken fence and non working gate. We were traveling with young children and did not feel safe. We were then moved to a tent, however we were not prepared for no electricity. The final move was to the farm cottage which we loved!
- Tania (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ernest (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gm (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kerry (9/5): Superb - It wasn't too clear which tent 3 we were meant to be in, cause there are two tent 3s. but it was overall really wonderful thanks
- Keith (9/5): Superb -
- Samuel (10/5): Great location and gracious hosts - Ettienne and Dean were very accommodating. Property had stunning views. The food included was really delicious. The drive up to the property was a 7km dirt road. But not difficult to navigate, you just have to drive slowly.
- Lars (9/5): Nice - Were very friendly.
Great location. That an invoice, with a very small amount, only arrived after departure
- Ronel (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was excellent and the vaneu was amazing
- Izelda (5/5): Passable - Nature surrounding Three rooms only two fans! 5 people only 3 milk sachets, no soap in bathrooms
- Reece (1/5): Bad -
- Zenixole (8/5): Very good -
- Gretchen (9/5): We enjoyed our stay thankyou - Lovely house - quiet and peaceful
Hospitality by Etienne and Dean was exceptional and they went out of their way to make us comfortable and served us like royalty ! The long sand road was not great - was a bit out of the way compared to what we thought we had booked for.
- Dante (1/5): Had potential but left disappointed - The location had potential with opportunity to sleep close to wildlife I was really disappointed with my stay here. While the accommodation itself had potential, the location was a major letdown. It was quite difficult to navigate, and the lack of helpfulness from the staff made matters worse. I had asked three different staff members if my hired Toyota Vitz would make it down the mountain, and all of them assured me it would, without even bothering to check my car. Unfortunately, my car got stuck in the sand and needed to be towed.
When I tried to call the reception for help, no one answered the phone. Thankfully, a safari guide happened to pass by and helped us, but his attitude was far from welcoming. He acted as though our situation was an inconvenience to him, which only added to our frustration. Overall, the experience was far below expectations, especially considering the cost of the accommodation. I won't be returning.
My experience took another disappointing turn when I asked the safari guide if there was a room at the top of the mountain where we could stay instead of having to drive down. He initially said no, but once I mentioned that I no longer wanted to stay at the property, suddenly he was willing to offer me a room that could accommodate five people. This felt like a last-minute attempt to make up for the poor service, but it left a bad taste given the lack of genuine concern earlier in the situation. It felt more like a reactive offer rather than a proactive effort to help guests in need. This kind of service, combined with the earlier issues, made the overall experience even more frustrating.
- Bulelwa (8/5): Very good -
- Georgia (8/5): Picturesque, peaceful and a real pleasure - The facilities are beautiful! The pool was a real lifesaver in the hot weather! I felt like everything we needed was there so no complaints! We did however get stuck in the soft sand on our way to the tented camp but the staff were so friendly in getting us out and on our way!
- Fiazyl (5/5): 50/50 - It's was very peaceful and relaxing. We loved the animals roaming free around camp. Times we were at camp no staff or security at gate. Had some issues at checking in that could had been handle better.
- Wessel (10/5): Beautiful, tranquil getaway - Beautiful, tranquil setting. We stayed in the tented area with a shared ablution block. All facilities were clean and well maintained.
A braai facility and bag of wood were provided at our tent so there was no need to use the communial braai area. I cannot think of anything that I would change.
- Chantelle (10/5): Exceptional - Very peaceful. A lot of unique buck species never seen before. Staff extremely knowledgeable and friendly The on site restaurant closed at 16:00 so no dinner option
- Mercia (8/5): Beautiful setting and lovely nights rest with the animal sounds around us. There are small led lights in the tents. Rece - The tent is comfortable and the mountains are beautiful. It was lovely to spend time with my family. No electricity, but wasn't a train smash as we only slept there one night. Please replace some of the braai grids.
- Chantel (8/5): Very good -
- Akila16 (9/5): Superb -
- Justin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Khanya (8/5): Very good -
- Janet (8/5): Great value - Great staff, great setting, everything you need. Great lapa if you are camping, good cover to sit if it's raining. Everything worked but maybe just a bit of tidying up to upgrade the area.
- Smith (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daleen (8/5): Catch your breath in a peaceful setting. - Peaceful in nature, the perfect break on a long road trip. The breakfast was exceptional! Fresh fruit with the yummy French toast. (I'm sorry I thought too late to take a photo and post a review on Instagram for you - presentation was very classy.) Hot water in bathroom can be dangerously hot, perhaps slightly turn down the temperature setting on gas geyser? Mattress was firm which is nice, but Very hard (a topping may cushion a bit)
- Liezel (9/5): Superb -
- Du (9/5): Superb -
- Ilze (8/5): Very good -
- Ilze (8/5): Very good -
- Annatjie (5/5): Not properly done - . But a lovely view.
Starters was great main course was ok not bad pudding also not bad
Staff were very nice. My towel had a big tore in. Obviously, this is not acceptable
Round hair dryer plug but no round plug extions.so i couldn't use that.
The plunger was broken
The restaurant also plain. I also asked for a fundraiser meal.. day sleepover for our club but no response. Maybe your gin we cab auction but no feedback
- Tony (5/5): Passable - The room was comfortable, with modern amenities.
Breakfast was great, staff very friendly and helpfull The Web page advertises restaurant facilities. Unfortunately it does not mention that it's only available over weekends. That was a major disappointment.
- Carl (9/5): Superb -
- Fg (10/5): Exceptional - They over accommodated us on a last minute booking.
We could not drive with our car to the house that we booked due to the road being a bit rough. They moved us into their premium chalets at no extra cost. Would not miss an opportunity to stay at Pabala
- Klaus (10/5): Wonderful bush feeling in a beautiful environment - The Pabala Nature Reserve is easy to find, as it is directly at the R330, not far away from Hankey. We had a mountain view suite in walking distance to the restaurant. The suites offer you a lot of privacy and the view is stunning. The equipment is modern and cosy with a nice fire place for cooler days. The place was very clean and you can park in front of the house.
We had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant, the food was very good, especially the french toast (breakfast) was delicious! The prices at the restaurant are reasonable and we could watch the animals (like peacocks) from there.
We did a game drive on our own and saw Giraffes, golden-brownish Wildebeests (!), Impalas and Nyalas.
We liked the feeling, that the owner and the whole staff really take care of the animals and they have an eye on beekeeping as well.
If you are looking for tranquility to relax and enjoy the bush feeling, this is a wonderful place to go to.
A special thanks to Ettienne, who did a great job to meet all our needs. No complaints at all.
Just as an info: if you plan to book a tent or a bungalow, just take in consideration, that you need your car to go to the restaurant, as the camping area is a bit further away.
- Melissa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michelle (9/5): Superb -
- Human (10/5): Exceptional - Staff waited until after hours to receive us (with a smile and warm welcome). They also immediately responded when we called them late at night and came within 5 minutes to help us.
The cottage was clean, well stocked and the beds were comfortable with fluffy warm blankets. Large soft towels.
Location, view and the braai area at the Stone Cottage are all exceptional. I wish we were able to stay two or more nights to truly appreciate the experience. There is nothing to dislike.
- Dorfling (10/5): Improve breakfast and waiting time - The room was beautiful, clean and fresh with an amazing view. One small thing that could change is to make sure that both sides of the bed has bulbs in for the bed side lights. Sadly, the breakfast was not a nice experience. We waited for an hour for the food and we were only two tables in the restaurant. I ordered the french toast. There were hardly any egg to be seen on any of the paper thin slices of bread and it was sickening sweet. French toast must be thick with the egg around. Have the syryp on the side in a small jug. The strawberries was 2 pieces of a quarter, no grated cheese or berries on the side. Not everyone likes it to be so sweet. If you are short staff, then as an owner or manager, jump in and ensure that the food comes out, do not walk around in the restaurant. My husband's breakfast was fine, thank you. I mean good by saying, if you want to see how something as simple as french toast looks, go look in Patensie at those 2 Padstalle. I am typing a long message in this regard, as I love having breakfast, obviously because it starts my day and because I am hungry. I could not even finish mine, it was really not nice at all. Take this as constructive critisism and I hope you will improve on this.
- David (7/5): Good -
- Parisi (10/5): Exceptional - Nadine is so lovely and also available. She made our stay feel like home.
- Bob (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alain (8/5): Very good - Parfait
- Du (9/5): Superb -
- Lindie (10/5): Loved every minute of it and need to go back there - The tents are very clean and nicely spaced out. If you too early to book in you can relax at the restaurant with a nice lunch or breakfast .
- Keith (10/5): Exceptional - Quiet, wildlife, short getaway from Jeffrey's Bay.
- Boshoff (9/5): Superb -
- Lodia (8/5): Very good - Beautiful views, nice clean rustic accommodation Not as many animals as you would expect in a South African nature reserve but it was beautiful and prices reasonable
- Van (8/5): Very good -
- Van (9/5): Old furniture Visitor's ..Ray&Clare𤪠- The magnificent views over the Cokscomb mountains â°ď¸ âĽď¸đ¨ââ¤ď¸âđâđ¨.. Stayed at the farmyard cottage and took a walk to the restaurant for some refreshments đđźđ 2nd day, we moved to the Tent camp, and other visitors left the kitchen dirty inside the Lapa. You find it neat and tidy..so left it like that, please
- Christer (6/5): Apart from the smelly toilet very nice - Nicke view Bad smell in the toilet
- Yolanda1004 (10/5): Fantastic views, excellent on-site food - Vast open space for body and mind Our own WiFi was dodgy but it would have been good if we were notified about dodgy gate before all panic broke out at 10pm about sleeping on the side of the road cause we couldn't access venue.
- Holm (9/5): Superb -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lunelle (7/5): For nature junkies :) - What a beautiful place. The view, the animals, the clean facilities. This is really one of the best camping places I've been too. The tents were hired out by a large group that came together. The peaceful night and days turned into loud music, singing and partying. Always ask if a large group is scheduled to come during your stay - this is not a pleasant experience. Got a refund as we left earlier due to this problem. The resort handle the situation to a satisfactory level.
- Dixon (8/5): We had a fabulous time. - The tranquility was amazing. The road is quite rough and the window on the glass door needed replacing.
- Botha (7/5): The tented camp is great for a group get away and acceptable for overnight stop. - Beautiful location. Lovely restaurant and shop on site. Ablution facility is clean. The communal kitchen seem to have everything. Comfortable beds, enough linen to not be cold at night The tent deck needs a bit of maintenance - loose poles, wooden planks against the tents. Ablutions is quite far from tents should you need to make use of it at night. No coffee making facility in the tent - coffee mugs and other crockery all in communal kitchen.
- Horsfall (8/5): Pleasant - Comfort and convenience All good
- Andrews (10/5): Incredibly peaceful and beautiful - The breakfast was delicious, big portion size and well priced. Our room didnât have a fresh milk for morning coffee.
Would have been amazing to have a little kitchen with a sink, so you donât need to go to bathroom for water to make coffee. But overall it was an amazing experience â¤ď¸
- Phillipus (6/5): Pleasant -
