Guest Reviews
- Moira (8/5): We enjoyed our 2 night break , and will hopefully have another visit in the future. - Stunning location, with the loch view and beautiful gardens to wander in. Service in the dining room was slow. The food, however, was excellant.
- Jes (7/5): - Location, view from the room, natural beauty... Shower was cold for 2 days of our stay to find that it could have been resolved by the flick of a couple of switches.
The apartment needed modernisation and smelled "old"
- shaleshifter (8/5): - The hotel building, grounds, pool and facilities. Lodge we were in was very dated and badly in needed of refurbishment. Looked like something out the 1980s.
- anna (6/5): -
- Madeline Karan (10/5): Family holiday with children. We were in two Accomodations which were very different and perfect for us. We brought - Location and beautiful views from our room.
Staff very helpful and brought us a fan as our room was quite hot first day Can’t think of anything
- Jane (9/5): Excellent stay for the money - Location A bit tired
- alistair (9/5): Would definitely recommend a stay. - Beautiful setting, great views from patio and apartment, dated but clean, well-appointed apartment. Good grounds for walking the dog. Plenty hot water, good showers. Kitchen adequate. No ventilation in bedroom, no fan. Had to sleep on pull out bed where I could leave balcony door open. Restaurants food not good enough to justify high prices and wine extortionate. Best meal we had was from pub in Aberfoyle.
- Iain david (7/5): Fantastic location on the lake beatfull gardens pool and gym facilities - Location and pool facilities WiFi atrocious Sauna in the pool area useless.
- DIANA (7/5): Stayed with my husband and 2 teenage boys. they loved the sauna in our apartment - The views are absolutely stunning, friendly hotel staff, great opening hours for the leisure centre.
- John (2/5): - The location The attitude of some of the Staff, particulary the Barman in the Bistro, John and his Colleague.
The fact we had no hot water for 24hrs after arriving.
Having complained twice, we were moved to another room which had low water pressure.
In addition to this, in our second apartment the extractor fan in the kitchen was blocked with grease and muck.
The bathroom was a disgrace.
After all this, the Staff in the Bistro were very unhappy because I wouldn't pay the Service Charge or leave a Tip.
The Manager, Marco, really has his work cut out with some of his Staff. Sadly.
- Princess (8/5): Would be perfect if they can update their furnitures specially the sofa and new curtains! Also, would be nice if they ha - Beautiful location, well maintained garden grounds! There’s a lot you can do, big chess, golf, tennis, swimming, gym! Relaxing loch view! Old curtains and sofa…
Only a tiny bit of hand soap is available, you need to bring your own toiletries.
- Debra (10/5): - Absolutely beautiful location. Staff were wonderful, facilities excellent. Self catering apartment was really spacious and ideal for our family.
Can't fault this hotel.
- Michael (8/5): -
- peter (7/5): Great value for money absolutely loved it - Had to deliver to the place last week through work and thought what a beautiful location, and decided to book a stay for the weekend with my partner Property was excellent
- Simon (10/5): absolutely stunning place to stay. cant fault a thing really - the apartmenrs are.fantastic
the space is unbelievable
p the meals
- Riley (9/5): A mixed bag - The location and views are outstanding. I enjoyed the leisure facilities. Good breakfast. The apartment was very dated, remincesent of a retirement village.
- Anne (7/5): - Lovely location. Apartment was extremely clean. It was a bit dated and you could hear music coming from another apartment. They could do with having a shop for supplies like milk, bread, cereal etc.
- viral (8/5): - Great location and surroundings. Really enjoyed our family stay with kids.... Sofa bed in apartment was small and worn out
- Penelope (10/5): -
- Frank (3/5): We booked 5 nights and only stayed 3 nights in apartment number SILVER BIRCH 2. won't be back. - No comment. I asked if we could have a ground floor as my wife has problems walking, they said they had none, they said it was just first floor (15 steep steps) then another 15 steep steps to the bedrooms we are both 86 years old and I have to help her all the time.
The floor boards upstairs and downstairs were very noisy with every step you took.
The furniture was old and uncomfortable, the door locks and the water taps need replacing.
- Abhilasha (7/5): So much space - Absolutely beautiful surroundings Bit tired
- Chuka Eze (10/5): Great Family Getaway Location. - Great ambiance, very beautiful resort and spacious vintage rooms with astonishing scenic view over the Loch.
- Dominic (1/5): Absolutely Horrible - The location is beautiful As the saying goes you can't polish a t@rd! It's so outdated and old. It's overpriced. A 330ml beer was £5.30!
Lodges smell like the inside of an old football boot. Half the equipment in the kitchen missing. Pull down sofa bed was broken and about 5 foot long, not enough for an adult.
Staff on reception don't care, rude and have no interest in anything.
- Andrew (9/5): Really pleasant stay in some stunning scenery. We are looking to visit again next year. - The location of the property and the views are amazing. Food was really well cooked and fresh. We took our dog with us and the staff were happy to accommodate us in the bar and eating areas. My wife had a massage and facial in the spa which she really enjoyed. Plenty of space in the hotel and grounds. We stayed in one of the 2 bedroom apartments which had acres of space and a surprising sauna in the bathroom. No real negatives about the property as a whole apart from it is a bit dated and in need of a freshen up. There are currently no EV charging facilities but they are in the process of having these installed so that’s a plus for the future.
- DUNCAN (8/5): Nice place to stay - excellent location, pool was good , staff good road to location
- Hilda (10/5): It was a super location and the staff were so helpful. - The staff, apartment and pool facilities and gardens Everything
- Dr nayla (10/5): - Amazing staff Everything
- Christopher (2/5): Dream Scottish holiday ruined by dirty apartment - View Dirty, smelly, self catering pointless pans bad
- Watson (8/5): -
- Jennifer (10/5): -
- ANGELA (9/5): -
- Claire (8/5): Jaw dropping View - Stunning location, a room with the most wonderful view! Took our breathe away. Pool/Sauna & Steam room were fab too. Rooms extremely dated, we did expect this as the photos showed what to expect but it also had an old smell…i think it was the carpets that gave it the fusty smell. It wasn’t awful but it wasn’t great
- Michael (10/5): Fabulous stay, staff excellent and friendly, food was delicious. Will definitely return 🥰 - Return stay Nothing
- Mcintosh (10/5): Dreams - Great value for money ....wish we could afford a summer holiday with all family..scenery and nature outstanding scotland at its best
- shirley (9/5): - Beautiful location and gardens, the apartment was very spacious and had everything we needed for our stay. The view from the balcony of the gardens and loch were so good. Will definitely return. Use of the pool was great. The staff was very helpful when I couldn't open the locker.
- Samantha (10/5): Brilliant time away to celebrate our babies first birthday and relax before I go back to work after maternity leave. - Very clean, comfortable and the view was glorious. Nothing.
- Munashe (6/5): It was lovely. - The apartments we booked were quite outdated. While the location was excellent, the property itself clearly requires renovation. The dishwasher was not functioning, the TV remote was faulty and held together with duct tape, and the fridge tipped forward each time it was opened, which is a safety concern. The property is outdated.
- Haddow (7/5): -
- Clare (8/5): - Perfect location and really helpful staff Would love for rafters lounge to be open all week and for the kids games to be better maintained
- Coburn (1/5): Forest hill resort - Locstion was lovely .... Rooms are dates blocked drains stuff coming up through sink because of blocked drains hot water no workin also cleaning not up 2 standard either
- Daniel Chalmers (8/5): Stunning location, lovely staff. - Very friendly and welcoming staff. Stunning location. Lovely pool. Great walks nearby. Drinks were expensive and bar was short-staffed.
- Shivani (10/5): A lovely spot from which to explore the Trossachs. - Excellent location with a beautiful view. The swimming pool was great for the kids. The apartment also had its own sauna, which was an unexpected treat! Nothing! It was a little dated but I think that added to the charm.
- Jessica (9/5): Gateway to Scotland, with Outstanding Views! - MacDonald Forest Hills was a fantastic place to visit - ideal location for visiting lots of different parts of Scotland, and with an absolutely gorgeous outlook. We stayed self-catering, and the apartment was beautiful - the view of the Loch was just outstanding from the balcony, and the apartment was very comfortable and had everything we needed for a comfortable break. It was really helpful to have access to a laundry (additional cost) basically 24 hours, and the facilities on the whole were great. Staff everywhere - the bar/restaurant, gym/pool and on reception were exceptionally friendly and nice. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. I would just have 2 recommendations. Firstly, to have a designated, roped-off area in the swimming pool for swimmers, or even adults-only, as unfortunately during our stay there were huge family parties with lots of children - which was great and understandable, but they had absolutely no regard for other guests - and as access for children was offered over the vast majority of the opening hours, it made swimming very difficult - and this was a bit disappointing as the offering of swimming facilities was my main choice for selecting.
Secondly, although the service and food was very good, there was not a huge selection - so we would have struggled to eat in the restaurant every night.
- Doug (6/5): Beautiful location, tired accommodation. - Stunning location. Spacious apartments with all the furniture and equipment needed for a comfortable selection catering stay. Gorgeous large sunny terrace. Grounds beautifully landscaped and maintained. Good size swimming pool. Our family have visited many times over the years and love the location. Staff were friendly and helpful. Apartment was clean. The apartments have been neglected and poorly maintained. Decor is worn and damaged (chipped and marked walls, frayed curtains, bedroom window that did not fully close, threadbare carpet patches that look like prior moth issue). The main bath overflow leaked through floor into cooker hood.
Check in is far too late at 5pm - told on the day that there was no availability for the paid ‘early’ 3pm check in we requested when offered the week before arrival. Nowhere indoors suitable to wait. The only family friendly restaurant, Rafters, was not open Monday to Wednesday, despite visiting during the school holidays, and only from 5pm other days. WiFi was unstable, unreliable and completely unavailable for most of one day.
- Joanne (7/5): - Beautiful surroundings Accomodation was dated
- stéphanie (8/5): -
- Adam (7/5): - Plenty of space Pool was freezing cold
Internet was dreadful
- John (9/5): Beautiful views from the cottage, warm , plenty to do onsite or just chill with a drink in the lounges up at hotel - Clean and spacious and comfortable had everything you needed for a few days holiday Nothing
- Amy (8/5): - The location was incredible. The option for self catering apartments in such an area is great. Great views from the balcony over the loch.
The facilities were good. Gym pretty small but had almost everything required. Large swimming pool with the sauna and steam room. I stayed in one of the 1 bed self catering apartments.
At face value, it was a great little apartment, large bedroom, large living area with the windows looking over the loch. But the apartment is incredibly dated and in need of refurbishment. There was peeling wallpaper, the outer of the bath was falling apart. Nothing that affected our stay, however it just brings the look of the place slightly.
The other thing is the check in and check out times..
Most hotels offer a 2/3pm check in with an 11am check out. This hotel offers a 5pm check in with a 10am check out. Around 1 week prior to attending I was sent an email offering an early check on and late check out for a fee. I requested a late check out which was the forwarded to the hotel for review. I heard nothing back from this.
On arrival at the hotel, I again requested a late check out. The staff at reception stated that it's the housekeeping staff who decide whether they can do a late checkout, and that I would have to return and confirm another day.
Day prior to leaving, I again asked about the late checkout, to be met with the same answer, and that housekeeping aren't in the building and that I would have to return in the morning.
After all that drama, I attended in the morning of check out where I was told they could not give me a late checkout.
I feel like this shouldn't be offered if they are unable to provide.
- Friel (9/5): - Great amount of space and has everything you need for a comfortable stay The decor is slightly dated and the swimming pool was very cold but those don't really impact the overall experience
- Richard (8/5): Great location. Lovely treatment. Enjoyable stay. - Location is fantastic. Nothing, it was fine.
- Cairn (4/5): -
- campbell (10/5): - One bedroom apartment with views overlooking the garden and Loch was superb
- Kelly (10/5): Relaxing - The location and lochside views The apartment was very dated, needing refurbishment
- Monika (10/5): Our Scottish adventure - We really liked the area and the size of the apartment along with a very friendly staff and the facilities. We only had a little interaction with anyone who worked there but every time we felt very welcomed. The weather could have been better and my son said the gym had limited choice but I don't go to the gym so I do know what he was talking about.

- Joan Greer (10/5): Will definitely be back - I couldn't believe the standard of the apartment. It was amazing. The view from the balcony was stunning. Our apartment block was right next to a beautiful wee stream so when we opened the sliding door to the balcony all we could hear was running water and birdsong. I've not felt that relaxed in a long time. Honestly, I can't complain about anything at all
- doreen (8/5): Beautiful place - Location views huge apartment beautiful hotel bar facilities great dogs welcome No phone reception in apartment staircase needs better lighting
- Linda (1/5): Awful - Hotel was lovely. Apartment was awful so many things needed repairing upgrading. Felt unclean in bed and apartment. Tried to make complaint with hotel but separate business. Tried to get in touch with Booking.com but impossible came home day early

- sheisfay (9/5): Stunning location and very relaxing - Location loch view & spa A wee bit dated if anything
- Wendy (7/5): - Beautiful location and really good facilities.
Loved the pool area. Although most of the staff were pleasant, one really let the others down on reception. Not a people person....looking down at mobile phone when I was enquiring about a water issue and couldn't care less attitude.
- shirley (10/5): Early spring mini break - Friendly staff, great facilities, loved the pool.
Spacious apartment. Decor a bit tired but did not effect our stay. Felt chilled out and relaxed. Beautiful grounds and great outlook from our apartment of loch Ard. Ben Lomond block, most bedrooms are next to the corridor and window in bedroom is onto corridor. But again didn't effect our stay too much.
- Elena (8/5): -
- Ruth (8/5): -
- Minakshi (9/5): - Ambience, room, all facilities NA
- Roy (10/5): -
- Luthien Lark (10/5): - Fantastic grounds, pool and snooker table Liked it all
- Liana (9/5): Really loved it, will be back. - It was an excellent base, to stay and relax, or to set off and explore from. The apartment was very comfortable, spacious, with an astonishing view. Staff in the restaurant/bar were really friendly and welcoming. Gym and spa were great too. I recommend the chocolate and pistachio dessert. The apartment was indeed quite traditional, but everything was good quality. Bring an HDMI cable and device if you want to watch TV.
- janice (10/5): -
- Carol (9/5): -
- Fiona (8/5): - Open plan living with large window with view Poor water pressure in upstairs shower
Dishwasher ineffective
- leigh (9/5): - Amazing location and fantastic view over loch Ard. We didn't use any of the onsite activities but they were all available if required. The staff were really helpful and friendly. Would stay here again! The dish washer didn't work properly and just covered everything in food bits.
I found the bed uncomfortable but my wife had a good sleep every night so take that as you will.
- Katrina (3/5): Beautiful location but accommodation in desperate need of an upgrade and mattresses unsleepable - Beautiful location and friendly staff The accommodation was pretty dreadful - the beds were incredibly uncomfortable with very little springs in very old mattresses. The room we had was probably over 40 years old and in desperate need of an upgrade.
- Ian (10/5): Our 3rd visit and we’ll be back next year! Brilliant location and friendly staff! - Location is amazing. Bar and restaurants very cosy The decor in the self catering lodge is getting a bit dated
- Helen (8/5): Comfy Stay - Beds really soft and comfy. Duvets far too thin, was really cold until i found an extra duvet in cupboard in lounge.
Couldn't find any recycling facilities..spent all week washing up and saving all our recycling..then couldn't find anywhere on site, and having transported it all down to Aberfoyle, none there either other than for glass. Really poor in this regard.
- Luis (8/5): We will be back - Aparments are really good. Clean and confortable. The swimming pool changing rooms were not clean.
- armida (9/5): Beautiful hotel overall and scenic - I really love it. Very scenic and relaxing. Our room was outdated hence we still comfortable throughout our stay
- Clare (10/5): Absolutely lovely - It was set in beautiful scenery, and the hotel and apartments were lovely.
The staff were helpful and friendly
The leisure club was fab. Clean and well equipped. The pool and spa areas were luxurious The bar prices and food were a little pricy, but isn't everyone.
- Natalie (8/5): Stunning scenery, great staff, a fabulous stay! - Stunning scenery, lovely staff, pool was clean and spa was lovely too. Restaurant was good and food very tasty, view from the room was amazing. Self catering property was spacious and well equipped: Self-catering property needed a refresh, it felt a little dark and dated.
- Scott (7/5): Relaxing - The location is beautiful The decor is a little dated
- trudi (7/5): - Nice setting. Lovely apartment. Clean. Comfortable big bed. The 4 mile road in once through
Aberfoyle is very narrow in places with very few passing places. The hotel is very expensive with bottles of wine starting at £60 according to the wine list. We played snooker. One table, the table baize had a tear in it. 4 out of the 6 cues had no tips on them and the cues were long so hit the wall at one side when taking a shot. Beer (peroni) in both hotel and leisure centre were not cold. Also £7 per pint.

Very comfortable appartment with sauna Tennis courts in state of disrepair

Evening food was lovely in restaurant. Gym, pool were lovely.
Great local walks nearby.
Outlook is tremendous. Apartment block maybe consider lift to upper floor.
