Guest Reviews
- Jurunas (10/5): Amayzing -
- Leanne (5/5): Nice cottage, needs a good clear out and tidy - Peaceful location, comfy clean beds, well equipped The cottage and outside needs a good clear out. Lots of broken furniture, pots, ornaments etc lying around. Very untidy looking and not comfortable to sit amongst.
Inside needs a good clear too.
- Rebecca (7/5): Good facilities and a comfortable stay, but the rat infestation beneath the lodge would prevent us from returning. - Very spacious and amazing scenery
Lots of seating area in the living room if you are going for a family stay
Free view was great had all channels to watch
Lots of cutlery which was helpful as we made our own breakfast in a morning The kettle was thick with limescale you could see it hadn’t ever been Cleaned we swapped it with someone else who wasn’t using theirs.
There are no blinds in the top widows so therefore when it broke day light struggled to go back to sleep as the light shines through.
There are rats nesting underneath the lodge too mice are to be expected next to fields I guess but there were really big rats under the lodge.
Everything else was fine has everything we needed to get through.
The bath was nice and constant hot water - cleaning products available to use which was handy and WiFi is always a win.
I’m not sure I would go back due to the rats. This presents a potential health and safety issue and is something we feel the owners should address urgently. We hope appropriate pest control measures are put in place to prevent future guests having the same experience.

- Liam (10/5): - Fantastic location, one of the best views to wake up to with a coffee in the garden on a morning. Lodge was lovely and cosy. Staff were lovely and went above and beyond. We would definitely recommend staying. Coming home
- pauline (6/5): -
- Nichola (8/5): - The location was amazing sitting watching swallows flying around Nothing
- Dixon (10/5): Fab! - Fantastic place and fantastic host. Huge thank you from us all and hope to plan our next trip soon.

- Sandra (8/5): We had a wonderful family weekend using 2 chalets and we'd be happy to visit again. Thank you. - The chalets were in a lovely location and were quiet. They were clean and the beds were very comfortable. Good cooking facilities with a reasonable selection of equipment. Plenty of hot water. A lovely warm and cosy feel. We didn't need the knick-knacks on the window ledges. Some fittings were a little tired.
- Libby (10/5): Fantastic would stay again! - Beautiful cabin in the beautiful Northumbrian countryside The decking might need renewed and or new panels as some of them were a wee bit lose
- Dale (8/5): -
- Andy Mac (7/5): Beautiful location and good value - Exceptional location and the lodge was well equipped. A shower would have been nice and the mattress wasn't great. Around the sides of the property is a mess.
- Daniel (7/5): Nice lodge, nice weekend but please sort the WiFi - Hosts were considerate by sending information around area and answering questions that we had prior to staying Lack of WiFi or phone signal. WiFi service was so bad that couldn’t even make a basic call however was advertised that this would be possible. With this in mind it also makes using any streaming service like Netflix impossible - bring cards lol
- Jodie (8/5): - Stunning cottage perched in the Coquet Valley. The cottage is beautiful, spacious and homely. Lovely fenced garden ideal for pets and children. Under floor heating is an added bonus. Its comes with everything you need.
Email is sent prior to arrival giving you your door codes and an information pack which is helpful but one critisim would be that no information Re (name of cottage/lodge) was stated so i ended up walking to another cottage where a family were already staying. Check in time was 5pm which is rather late as you technically loose your first day and check out time is 10am so you loose your last day, we paid for a 2 day stay but only really had one full day to enjoy the cottage and surrounding area which was a shame.
The cottage accepts pets on the condition that pet hairs should be swept and cleaned on departure but we had no means of cleaning them as there was no sweeping brush available, luckily there was a brush left outside one of the other cottages so we managed to get that (My suggestion being that its okay to have this rule in place as long as there is the facilities to be able to do it).
- Dumitrescu (10/5): -
- John (8/5): -
- Mullen (8/5): - It had everything you needed. Lovely towels and bedding. The WiFi connection isn't great at all. So with teenage kids you need to be prepared as you're literally in the middle of nowhere. We didn't have curtains in the attic bedrooms so had to use towels which was a bit strange,as the cottage was so well equipped everywhere else.
- Katie (10/5): Memorable, comfortable, family focused and simply a family retreat 😊 - LOVED EVERYTHING 🥰 Nothing at all!
- Joyce (10/5): We stayed for my husband 65 birthday there was a variate of ages and every 1 said the facilities was amazing location go - Lovely cottages lovely facility Everything
- Jim (6/5): Disappointed. But a great area. - Lovely area to visit but we will be elsewhere for future visits.
The nearby Rose & Thistle is outstanding for food and genuine hospitality. Remember it’s the country so no pavements and therefore don’t walk at night as it can be a busy road. The Pheasant cottage is a bit tired from the head down and needs a deep clean from above head height. The owner needs to rethink their booking strategy. Most if not all of the other lodges were booked to a large family group celebrating a 65th until 3am on Saturday morning. Pure greed shoehorning us in to the other lodge as outsiders. If they had booked after us you should have let us know and given us an option of arranging an alternative date. If we were last to book you should have let us know and not accepted our booking. If there is damage to the front garden of the Pheasant Lodge it’s because it was used as a short cut to the pine lodge. To avoid doubt we took our rubbish home as all outside bins were full as was the spare ground around them with bottles cans etc. from the party. 🥳
- Sammi (10/5): Great stay, tucked away, plenty to do, thank you. - Location N/A
- Lee (10/5): Lovely cottage, great location. Excellent for a quiet break with breathtaking scenery. - Great location. Although some areas were inaccessible due to military training. If you enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of Northumberland you’ll love it. We had clear night and the sky was sparkling with stars!
- Howard (9/5): - Lovely cottage, well equipped and in a beautiful location Bit cold first night as underfloor heating not on before we arrived
- Emma (9/5): Great value for money -
- Marie (7/5): Pleasant stay despite minor issues. - The location was amazing and the views were incredible (especially with a clear sky at night). The accomodation was spacious and pleasant. Tea towels and cleaning products were provided which was very appreciated. Had to clean the top of the hob and the cutlery on both lodges as they were dirty. The mug tree in Pheasant lodge was covered in thick dust. Mattresses in Reivers Lodge need renewing. Had an issue with the heating being broken in Pheasant Lodge (contacted staff about it) which meant it couldn't be turned down so was incredibly hot and uncomfortable. Key for pheasant lodge very difficult to get out of lock.
- Susan (7/5): Good, but please sort your communication out. - The location There was no name on the property and not having the Email 24 hours before I was left in the dark. I had to speak to a neighbour to get the wifi code and number of the cleaner to make a whatsapp call to find this out.
I had tried to make contact, several times, through Bookin.com to no avail as the owners number went to answer phone on every occasion.
Had I not has to good fortune to bump into a neighbour I would have been stranded, with no accomodation, for the night as there is no mobile signal, ( as there was no mobile signal I could not pickup the Email, about the property, that was sent about nineteen hours late.) The property has no name on it and the key box number on the confirmation Email was wrong.
I will say that when I had the WIFI code and contacted the cleaner she was very pleasant and reassuring.
I took the liberty of placing one of the property's cushions, with a pheasant on it, in the window to assist the next guest in identifying the property.
The central heating was not working (problem with Hive type thermostat not communicating with hub). There were, though, electric radiators which I had to did out and set up. I shouldn't have to do this.
Because of the above I we could not have a shower because of no heating in the bathroom (very cold in there)
- Aaron (10/5): -
- Helen (10/5): Perfect get away with the dogs. Cozy and quiet. - Very peaceful location, the lodge was so cozy and accepted more than 2 dogs. Stunning views and great walks near by.
- Mitchell (10/5): Thoroughly enjoyed the cottage though loved everything about it and would def return. - Loved everything about the cottage Only thing is couldn't get in cottage till 5 on the Monday and had to leave fri by 10 so felt like we lost 2 full days. Normally places u can get in late morning or early afternoon.
- Mike (7/5): Lots of fun in a great location - Lovely location and comfortable beds. Great for a few days away Just a bath with no shower attachment. Sofas could do with updating. Could do with some where to hang towels and the mirror in the main bedroom needs to be near a socket.
- Graeme (5/5): -
- Richard (8/5): -
- María Encarnación (9/5): Super cosy cottage and wonderful service -
- Jasmine (9/5): -
- Bretherick (8/5): - Lovely, clean, comfortable and an amazing location. It was a great place to bring the dog and the family to explore the area. The only thing was it got a bit hot and the thermostats didn't seem to work, or at least we couldn't work them out. I did message the number I had been given for some assistance but got no reply. Also at one point the fridge has stopped working and everything was warm but then it seemed to work again later so no harm done.
- Peter (8/5): Great location to explore the north east - Great location, would stay there again. Very nice cottage and spacious. A couple of things need mending (such as toilet seat and door handles). Would be nice to have had shelves in the bathroom for wash bags etc. Would also have been nice to have some shower gel there - these little extras really take it up a level and not very costly.
- Rachel (8/5): -
- Logan (10/5): 10/10 would definitely return - Perfect cottage and location Nothing
- caroline (7/5): -
- JBKAZ (10/5): -
- Mary (8/5): A great place to stay for some peace and quiet and to enjoy the night sky - Beautiful and quiet location perfect for hill walking. We enjoyed sitting outside on the decking in the evening sun with a glass of wine. The heating system worked well and kept us warm. The night sky was amazing due to the dark area around the property. Good value for money. The property didn’t have a name label on it so it took some detective work to figure out which was ours, largely by a process of elimination. A name plate would have helped.
- Helen (7/5): - The location was easy to find, we stayed in one of the wood cabins, and it was very peaceful and quiet There was quite a few flies inside when we arrived and there was no view. And lot's of cobwebs up the walls
- Gilda (10/5): Chill! Just what we wanted and needed. - A lovely spot. Beautiful countryside Al around us. I would definitely recommend staying here. There was a lovely pub/restaurant just a few hundred metres away aswell I can't think of anything
- Jane (5/5): - Location good. No sign to show which chalet was ours. Cramped bedrooms. With a little thought the single room could be better. Tv didn't work, one bedroom light not working. Maintenence contact fixed both when reported with a friendly manner. Outside needs some tlc. Limited crockery, no wine glasses. Heating unfathomable.
- Pickering (7/5): -
- Ray (7/5): Perfectly comfortable stay, great location. It's a base for the outdoors. - Great location for outdoor activities. No mobile signal was good! TV wasn't working and impossible to figure out. Old toaster was tricky. Not showstoppers though.
- Janet (6/5): - Wonderful location . The beds were dreadfully uncomfortable .cutlery dirty and poor quality .also check out at 5pm us very late .
- Rebecca (5/5): Great value for moneys, lacks some attention to detail - The location The property wasn’t particularly clean, the bedding and towels were fine however there was a lot of missed areas like cobwebs and dust. The cottage was lacking in some essentials I.E baking trays/oven dishes. Also the sink in the upstairs bathroom was blocked on arrival. However we do feel it was good value for money at the rate we paid :)
- Lynda (8/5): Nice stay - Views amazing peacefully location Wasp and bees think a nest was in garden so couldn't sit out
- Darren (4/5): Great area, neglected accommodation - Fantastic area Around the chalet is a unloved and neglected, as is the inside.
- Coulter (9/5): Lovely break. Great Value - Location Lack of information about the local area was missing in our brochure. We didn't know there was a pub and shop only 5 mins away.
Given the remote location it would have been nice to have a few more basics..ie a sponge for washing up /a tea towel? This did not detract from the holiday.
- Kellie (7/5): Good value, beautiful location - Beautiful serene location which was without question the best feature, quiet and peaceful with stunning views and some really gorgeous walks right on the doorstep. Rooms are really spacious, and the kitchen was well equipped. Good WiFi connection and great water pressure in the shower. Downstairs toilet, big kitchen, washing machine and dryer etc. Good value for money given it was peak season in August. The cottage didn’t have a name on it (Cheviot) which was a little confusing, so we guessed it was ours as the key was in the door after a little walk around. The cottage does really need some updating and although it was perfectly adequate for our time there and well equipped, it was just a little tired. It was clean but just needs some proper TLC and new mattresses (they aren’t that comfy) to go from good to a brilliant stay, but I would stay again as it is.
- Gill (8/5): - Byre cottage was spacious and very well equipped with everything we needed. Nice quiet location, good for exploring Northumberland. We had read that the WiFi was poor but we found it to be absolutely fine.
Nb. The nearby pub in Harbottle, The Star, serves good food and has a useful small shop attached.
- alan (8/5): -
- Suzanne (8/5): -
- Michiel (6/5): Leuk, maar een warme douche was fijn geweest - De locatie, een leuke cottage De warmwatervoorziening was defect
- Paula (10/5): Lovely restful stay - It was presented well. Fully equipped. Peaceful Needs a clear sign in the front of its name
- Edward (8/5): The cabin was lovely clean and tidy we were already advised about the phone signal being poor - N.a The WiFi was terrible. We were warned about phone signal . But there was hardly any WiFi for tv as well if that could be sorted the cottages would be perfect
- Judith (8/5): Good value for money and location - not applicable there is a patch of wood rot in the 2nd bedroom and more natural light
- Elaine (8/5): Overall we had a very relaxing stay in Northumberland, had a wonderful day once again at Cragside and spent an afternoon - Inside much more welcoming than the outside. Spacious enough for two friends to enjoy. Beds were comfortable and clean. Property in the main was clean. Good array of crockery, cutlery etc. Plenty towels and some toiletries if required. Property overall inside is very light and airy. The outside of the property could do with some work, garden was rather uninviting. Entire outside doesn’t give a good impression, needs some work. Rather concerned regarding the dry timber at back of the property next to gas tank! Certain parts interior wise need updating some areas looking tired. Bathroom lacked any blind, curtain etc felt rather exposed! Shower provided plenty of hot water although it did fill up very quickly, not sure if issue with drainage, around the shower doors needed a deep clean. Would have benefitted from some instructions for the oven/grill. No bags provided to place laundry/towels on departure as requested in folder.
- Philip (7/5): -
- Joan (8/5): Lovely lodge - Location was remote but short walk to two pubs. Lovely walks from the door. Compact Lodge, but roomy enough for us and the dog. Nice terrace to sit out on and to watch the sheep in the field. Loved watching the birds feeding in the morning. Only one wine glass so used tumblers. Bed not the most comfortable but we still slept well. None of this spoilt our time there.
- samantha (9/5): A relaxing dog friendly stay. - This was out second stay at the cottage, it's perfect for a dog friendly stay with an enclosed garden.
The owners are very welcoming and friendly. Great walks from the doorstep, one of our favourite places to stay.
- John (9/5): Excellent base for a couple of days' cycling. The Star Inn in Harbottle is a gem! - Location perfect as touring base. Excellent country pub is just over a mile away in Harbottle.
- Sara (8/5): - Great location, spacious and good facilities
- Angela (10/5): Lovely 😍 - Beautiful spacious cottage
Peaceful location
Really well equipped and great value for money Perhaps a non slip mat in the bath would be a good idea
- Stephen (7/5): - Location was perfect The photos enhanced the lodge beyond reality
- Morris (10/5): - How lovely and stress free it was
- Alison (10/5): -
- Andrea (3/5): Would not stay again over priced for what it is .needs work doing - The beds were comfy Cobwebs everywere .Dead flys .It was very unclean.Fridge was rusty with no shelves or door storage.Freezer didn’t work .Tv in bedroom didn’t work.no keys to open windows .The pictures were nothing like what the patio outside the kitchen,it’s all overgrown and bails outside.Theee should always be a key to open patio doors&wi dows incase of a fire.
- Christine (7/5): A quaint cottage in a good location - Location is great for exploring Northumberland. Quiet, nice pubs within easy distance. Cottage is a great size and could easily accommodate a family. There was a problem with leakage from the upstairs bathroom into the area directly below it downstairs. This was reported and will hopefully be dealt with quickly.
- Barbara (1/5): Rubbish lodge, great views - The views only The property and area needed up dating , it was very shabby, marked furniture and stained sofas, gardens were overgrown very very unkempt. We struggled to find the lodge we were staying in not lodge name it must have fallen off.
The owner never answered our phone call or assisted at all, we were two day with out hot water, but Jackie the housekeeper was excellent , nothing was to much trouble for her.
In the information on your website it says there is a telephone on the site, apparently that existed for two years.
The pictures attached will show you the gardens and decking, and all so the shed with the phone in it.
To say we were disappointed is an understatement, I feel the owners of the property should reimburse us the full amount we paid . Please see attached photos. Mrs Barbara Cooper
- Anne (8/5): Restful -
- jemma (10/5): -
- Lorna (10/5): Relaxing - Property is beautiful, kitchen is gorgeous. We had the best time.
- Katrina (7/5): Lovely property and location. Just needs a little extra thought/care - Location, general decor Property wasn’t named so didn’t know which one on the site was ours. Needs a spring clean - cobwebs, thick dust on bedroom soft furnishings
Lack of plug sockets in bedrooms!
Lack of cafetière, chopping boards
- Sharon (8/5): -
- Linda Howard (7/5): - Views were great, beautiful location
- Eloise (9/5): Great location of a deceptively spacious xottage - Greet location & a lovely cottage. Lots of space & areas to sit. Comfortable beds & good sized bedrooms. Huge kitchen & plenty of cooking equipment. Weren’t any curtains in upstairs twin bedroom & only one set in other. Not sure if owners are aware?! We used spare towels to cover windows
- Jayni (10/5): - Loved our little stay and we booked again immediately it’s so peaceful and private
- andrew (6/5): Great trip, disappointing standards - The cottage itself is a fantastic building, really spacious and in a great location to use as a base to explore the area, really warm with a lovely conservatory area at the entrance to the cottage itself Having read a few more reviews of the property nearer the time of our visit I was a little worried about some other travellers concerns around the state of the property as far as in it’s being left in an unclean state and things not being attended to…unfortunately I was proven right, with other peoples complaints not only not being take seriously but also not being rectified right down to the same bulbs/lights not working and the many many cobwebs and spiders everywhere, and I know they exist but if you clean they are to a minimum not like this. The owners have the place up for sale for £1.4 million, potential buyers should stay for a few nights to make sure their offer reflects the current state of the properties. Also we had a very dangerous chair that was already broken and had been pushed back together and left which very nearly causal father in law of 70 to fall, and my 2 yr old almost put her arm into a vase which was already broken with an exposed ragged edge, it wasn’t a recent break, cleaning staff do not do their job. Such a shame the potential is high the product is stagnating
- Robert (9/5): - Isolation with walks from the door, the quietness and dark skies. Very reachable to local villages either walking or driving, very cosy cottage.
The other people in the other accommodation were great also, great mix The bathroom requires a little TLC, there are two holes either side of the shower, looks like water damage, but to be honest we were thinking either Roland or Mickey would come and visit, it didn't spoil our stay, just an observation, also the bathroom window needs mending.
- Angela (10/5): - The remote peaceful setting and it was somewhere special to me and my partner fron a trip here years ago
- Adrian (9/5): Lovely relaxing week in glorious countryside. -
- Reed (8/5): Great and peaceful - The rural location and peace and quietness The decking to the entrance of the property has several weak boards and the lack of blinds in the bathroom does not make it very private plus the smoke alarm in the kitchen goes off very easily when cooking also the toilet in the bathroom is very uncomfortable to use I would personally do away with the bath as it is very small and fit a larger shower and reposition the toilet to make it more user friendly especially for larger people apart from that the property is excellent
- Richard (10/5): - Peace and quiet
Bath had an amazing view
- SARAH (6/5): -
- Sacha (8/5): Cheviot cottage - Value for money, ease of checking in/checking out. Very peaceful. Curtains let in lots of light in the mornings, drive way very uneven, but these are very small things
- David (8/5): - Country side with the views , local pub .
- Winnie (7/5): We loved our stay and would consider returning - Loved the location , and the quirky ness of the cottage , dark skies quite Property was very dated as was the information package that was there , furniture was very uncomfortable , tv don’t work (not that it was a issue for us) was clean to look at but was extremely dusty behind/under furniture . Plugs in sink and shower
Fridge was had ice on back which cause some of our food items to freeze
Few things could of don’t maintain wise outside on decking
Obviously we don’t know at the time it was up for sale but makes sense as to why it seemed slightly neglected as it was a beautiful place and somewhere where would consider returning to if improvements where made
- Bethany (8/5): Amazing experience - Such lovely views nice and pieceful location WiFi was don't majority of the stay which upset my daughter but not there fault. It's to be expected when your in the middle of no where
- Noel (8/5): Great location for a rural break - Great location, quiet but not remote. Two pubs with very good food within walking distance. Comfortable living areas, excellent bathroom. Clean and tidy. Delay in receiving access code. Problem over cabin we'd booked meant we were relocated, and second bedroom was very small, with bunk beds, which were not ideal for my 70-year old back and knees!
- Jane (8/5): Comfortable cottage in idyllic setting - There are approximately 6 cottages and cabins on site, but it doesn't feel overcrowded.
Five of us stayed in the Cheviot Cottage. It's tucked away at the back and set in a beautiful spot, backing on to a pasture so you see the cows in the morning and is next to a path that takes you on a lovely walk. It was quite idyllic.
The cottage is well laid out, and good value for money. Don't expect luxury, but do expect comfort and wonderful vibes.
It's a perfect relaxing spot to stay with friends for local hikes and trips around Northumberland. We followed a local hiking route that was included in the information book.
NB There is no mobile signal at the cottages or in the surrounding area. We didn't have any issues with the wifi as some people did in their reviews.
When you visit, make sure you head to The Star Inn in Harbottle. Great meals (gluten free choices avail) and a wonderfully hospitable welcome. The kitchen could do with more cutlery to cover guests, but you'll find pretty much everything to use in order to cook, bake etc. There were a number of other minor issues (which have been fedback to the team) which once fixed would mean a 10* stay. Those aside all in all a wonderful stay, and would absolutely return for another stay.

- Doulton (6/5): Can't complain for the price - Lovely location close to a great pub in Harbottle I think WiFi shouldn't be advertised at all as it is not guaranteed. There was a nest control panel which couldn't work cause there was no WiFi. Cabin was really hot cause not all the radiators had nozzles. There were lots of cobwebs in the cabin. The shower was duct taped together and the bath leaked.
- Caitriona (3/5): Hugely disappointed - The area is stunning. The aesthetics of the cabin are lovely but the amenities are way below standard. We were meant to stay from 26th Dec to 31st Dec but left a day early due to poor conditions and amenities. We didn’t have functional heating or hot water throughout our stay despite me informing the hosts on our first day. Seemingly the combo boiler is used for two cabins which does not work efficiently. There is no connectivity in the area, no phone network and it’s a common occurrence not to have WiFi in the area. This should have been stated in booking page.
The cabin smelled really bad when we arrived, I had to clean down all floors and surfaces. Cobwebs and dead flies around corners and walls. The laundry facility was not fit for purpose. No machines worked and is also used as a dumping ground.
- Deborah (8/5): - The area is near the dark skies, Drakestone, Lady well, and other walks and areas of natural beauty and interest. A super warm wooden Lodge which was our second Christmas here. We took our own Christmas decorations up and it felt very homely and Christmassy. The place was very dusty in areas. The tops of the curtains, some cobwebs hanging down and the decor was dated and tired looking. It's currently up for sale and perhaps going through a change. I would go back if it had a little TLC as everything else was brilliant.
