Andrew (8/5): Small but well-proportioned apartment - One of nine terrace apartments along two sides of a courtyard which provides convenient parking. They look great from the outside, with the stone effect and timber door arches (presumably the reason why they’re called “cottages”). Ours was very compact, and there was a knack to getting into & out of the bathroom! But they’ve made good use of the small space and it has everything that is required, and providing one doesn’t wish to swing the proverbial cat then they’re fine. It is next to the Bay Horse pub, close to a bus stop for Durham city, and an easy drive to the North Pennines for some great walking. For anyone planning to stay here, be aware that despite the name Durham City Cottages: > they’re located on the outskirts of Brandon village about 4 miles from the city centre, and the pub (closed Mon/Tue) is the only amenity in the immediate vicinity > they’re not what one might ordinarily expect a cottage to be, but are more like apartments The pub is certainly very popular with the locals, and you may get some noise on a warm evening when they’re sat outside. You may also get some competition for parking as some customers do use the car park (one was parked right outside our apartment upon our arrival) despite residents-only signs. We experienced loud music from the adjoining apartment on our first evening, which thankfully stopped at 9pm. Don’t know how loud they actually had it, but I note from other reviews that “thin walls” has been mentioned a few times. The hot water wasn’t working on our final morning, but was resolved promptly after being reported by another apartment.

Amanda (1/5): Awful - Nothing. Would not recommend this to anyone. Horrendous cleanliness and when asked for a refund as did not wish to stay following arriving to a dirty cottage that was also not the size I paid for, I was then ignored by the property. Complete waste of time and money with shocking customer service.
Jane (9/5): Fabulous little place to stay at a great price - Super clean and very comfortable bed. Well equipped kitchen with everything you would need, including a washing machine. Coffee machine, two tvs, nice decor, The hot water wasn’t working on our first morning and was fixed within 45 minutes of messaging which we thought was great. Easy parking by the pub. Bit of a drive into Durham but that’s not necessarily an issue for everyone (& my fault for not looking fully at the location!) - otherwise it was excellent

Emma (1/5): Know what you’re booking 1/2 nights maybe but this is not a place you can relax in, cosy it’s not, suppressive and d - We booked Cosy Cottage No 4, looked great when we first arrived, had high hopes from the reviews but didn’t appreciate what we’d booked until we got there. We booked for 5 nights but hadn’t realised there is no window in the lounge/dining/kitchen area. There’s a skylight but for 5 nights you can’t relax in a room with no window to the outside world. Theres a window in the bedroom, the one room you don’t need a window because you want to sleep. WiFi drops every 3 minutes meaning you can’t watch anything that streams (previous review shows owner knows this), the bed was like sleeping on the high seas when my partner turned over (comfy bed reviews must be from single occupancy stays), bathroom extractor not working as bathroom full of steam but owner states it’s a quiet extractor when you tell him (again another review has advised). No instructions for induction hob. Took 3 dogs which owner eventually said was fine after 3rd email asking, after I’d paid, £20 for dogs and now claims that’s per dog. Owner believes it’s the space I had a problem with, it wasn’t, it was the lack of window for 5 evenings, cooking, eating and relaxing in there. 12 parking for 9 cottages but they are small spaces the cleaners park diagonally across a couple of the spaces.

I didn’t check the individual radiators and the bedroom one was set on number 2 so it remained cold. I always carry a hot water bottle with me so I wasn’t cold when I went to bed.

Chris (9/5): Great for an overnight - Up a big hill next to a pub that did good food. Supermarkets driving distance. Was quite and peaceful. Private parking in front American style motel feels. I didn't like the early checkout as we came up for a show so being late to bed and then having to be out by 10am left us tired the following day. Trying to get around the bathroom door felt like a juggling act and would have become annoying if we stayed longer.

Josie T (8/5): Comfortable tiny home in pub car park. - We chose the location as it was easy to find from the A1, and we were breaking our journey travelling north. It was fine for one night for 2 of us and a dog but would be cramped for any longer. We ate at the pub next door because it was convenient. Lots of wonderful public footpaths for walking the dog and the people we met were all very pleasant and helpful. Someone had parked their car in the parking space right outside our room which made it very tight for us to park as well.
