- Daniel (10/5): -
- Karl (10/5): - Super awesome hobbit hole !!!! Highly recommend
- Wendy (10/5): Magical experience would recommend to everyone, particularly if your Hobbit, LOTR fanatics - Loved everything, was very comfy, quiet and we felt like true hobbits. What a fantastic job the owner has done building the accomodation. Puss was particularly friendly which was great as we had been missing our cats, probably spoilt him a bit too much. Cooking facilities great everything we needed. We were a little upset that we left a bag of rubbish for the owner to clear as couldn’t find an outside bin.
- Patricia (8/5): - It was quaint and quiet and Johan was very friendly and helpful
- Johnson (10/5): - Amazing little spot - great for a quiet getaway!
- Julie (10/5): -
- Nicole (10/5): So cozy and cute! We really enjoyed our stay.. Although a bit bummed out that it rained the whole day. Puss really made - -
- Marion (9/5): - A great experience with an amazing set up. Cooking breakfast in this environment with products provided by Johan was magical. Mattress.
- Bernie (10/5): - Loved the property - felt like we'd stepped into the Shire and Gandalf was going to pop around for a coffee
- Kathleen (10/5): Wonderul stay enhancing the trip to Hobbiton. - It’s a neat little cottage and has such charm! After visiting Hobbiton it’s just perfect!
Breakfast was supplied in house and the homemade jams yummy.
You can bbq so bring your bbq foods. Shower is powerful. Bed comfortable. Every thing was fine!
- Steve (9/5): -
- Susan (8/5): A hobbit for the night - Setting and uniqueness of the building. The shower was very powerful. Included breakfast was adequate bacon, eggs, bread, jam, yoghurt . Cabin was good for 2 people. Bed was just a double, and the mattress was very uncomfortable, would benefit from a mattress topper. Otherwise, our stay was a good experience .
- Asfara Ahmed (7/5): Truly Unique Experience!! - The location and experience is undeniably unique. We recently did the Hobbiton Tour so it was a great extension of that experience. The cat was very sweet and friendly and spent hours cuddling with us. The house was quite cold and it was difficult to keep the fire going. It was also a bit strange that the bathroom did not have a door of some sort.
- Lisa (4/5): Would be better in summer - Pot belly, heater and electric blanket made it cosy It rained torrential and there were 2 leaks that we had to use most of the towels on. The drips and the sound of rain behind the bed kept me awake for hours. Had to make eggs in microwave as cooking area sodden
- Mellita (9/5): Superb - Clean, tidy, peaceful and had lots of little extras to add a personal touch. It was fun and quirky. Loved the cosy fire place. Even though it rained for our stay and we couldn't use the fire pit and didn't cook outside, we loved our stay. Also loved the cat.... While we understand that the cost of everything is rising, this was on the upper for our price limit. And while it is an amazing place to stay that we feel in love with, is it value for money ?????
- Gerry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Raphael (9/5): I felt like I was transported to Middle Earth! - It’s one of a kind and absolutely beautiful. Very well thought out and well taken care of. Had a few bugs, but no big deal!
- Peter (10/5): Charming accommodation, highly recommended - Charming accommodation very close to Hobbiton and peaceful
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shirley (10/5): Exceptional - We love the hold stayed there. The cat 🐈 loves the cat treats the owner had in the kitchen area for us to give to it. The price included eggs and bacon and bread. And homemade jars, tea, and coffee also jug of milk. Also, DVD to watch. The only thing we can say is that the egg spatula should be out in the cooking area. Hanging up on the wall. Also, english breakfast tea bags, please. But other than that, it was awesome lit the fireplace, and it was so nice and warm. Thank you.
- Wojciech (9/5): Superb - Good stay, rather quite hobbit place, for LOTR fans must visit, nice BBQ, bed rather short for 190cm people but it's fine cause it's for hobbits. Watch out for the cat who likes to claim the living room space. Good self made breakfast from ready available ingredients. Nothing
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sandra (10/5): Exceptional - Everything, the green door, that fact that we got to stay in a hobbit hole, breakfast supplies were delicious, homemade jams, fresh farm eggs, to the jug of milk. The cat was very friendly as was the chicken. Loved every minute ❤️ Nothing. Everything was perfect, and private. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
- Micaela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Natasha (10/5): Cosy hobbit hole adventure - Super cute hobbit hole with some beautiful craftsmanship true to Lord of the Rings. Tolkien fans will love this. Very cosy.
- Christen (9/5): Superb - Perfect stay for something a bit different and Cosy. Bonus if you are a cat person, as we had a friendly visitor with our stay. Johan was friendly on arrival and the breakfast on point.
- Preetika (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chalice (10/5): It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. - Johan's little creation is like stepping into another world. Set in peaceful surroundings, it's the perfect place for a tranquil getaway and to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of life. Johan provides beautiful fresh food for breakfast, with lovely homemade bread, a range of spreads, hime grown tomatos, fresh eggs, bacon, and more. It's lovely to have a visit from the resident farm kitty and have the chickens pecking around. The gardens are beautiful and make you feel very sucluded and give good privacy from the road and the main house. The booking site said no wifi, but there was wifi, which was a nice surprise. You're only 15 minutes from quaint Cambridge with lots of cute cafes and everything else you need. We loved everything about our farmstay!
- Marcus (9/5): Great stay at this beautifully crafted Hobbit Hole. - Amazing place to step away from the 'real world' straight into Middle Earth for a night. The attention to detail is incredible. This place is a real labour of love.
We sat outside all evening around the fire pit listening to the LOTR music and felt transported away for a very memorable 10th wedding anniversary. Johan was a very welcoming host.
- Katrina (10/5): Exceptional - Such an incredible place. the hobbit hole was magical and the host was lovely. It was great to visit Hobbiton the next day, I was recommending it to everyone in our tour!
- Martin (8/5): Fun and unique accommodation. - It was a beautifully created Hobbit hole with lots of touches from both the Tolkien illustrations and the movies. Fun and authentic. The breakfast supplies with jams and bacon and eggs was lovely. Fabulous high pressure shower.
- Jean (9/5): All the Comforts of A Truly Loved and Lived in Hobbit Hole - The attention to detail. The bespoke artisan craftwork that reflects the hobbit theme. The peace, tranquility, quiet and the enthusiasm, thoughtfulness and generosity of the host. Everything that made the place unique and comfortable- Hobbits love comfort - was considered in the offering right down to marshmallows and toasting forks and wood for the fire bowl... There was really nothing I did not like. It was in a natural setting, which was beautiful and soothing.
- Patrick (10/5): Fantastic experience, we both loved it and the chickens too. - Breakfast fantastic, better than expected. Nothing, couldn't have been better.
- Amelia (10/5): Absolutely amazing!! - Absolutely loved everything about this accomodation! Was so gorgeous! Made our trip so special with the hobbit and LOTR theme. Breakfast supplies were wonderful and the local chickens were also great! I couldn’t stop saying how cute it was! Magical! Would 100% recommend. Host was wonderful and very attentive and helpful too. Can’t fault it!
- Matt (10/5): A fantastical start to our wedding - We stayed whilst having our wedding at hobbiton. The stay was absolutely magical and really made us feel the part for the wedding to come. It was so cozy and comfortable whilst having the conveniences of a modern shire life.
The location was excellent, Nicely tucked away and private. We really enjoyed the surrounding farm land and beautiful wildlife that visited.
The host was very friendly and accommodating. We loved hearing how he came to make the hobbit hole. We were also very grateful for the wonderful little momento he left after our wedding.
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay and start to our marriage
- Pedro (7/5): Served the purpose. -
- Zonia (10/5): Most magical weekend in the Hobbit hole - The breakfast was amazing! We liked everything
- 2cvali (10/5): Exceptional - Simply awesome. We did not expect such a welcome and such a homely "Hobbit hole". Breakfast was right up to Samwise Gamgee. And not to forget to mention the always hungry cute kitty. I absolutely recommend spending a day or two here before visiting Hobbiton.
- Susanne (10/5): Live like a Hobbit for one night :D - This was the most perfect stay and it’s the best place to get away from all stresses in your life. The bed was superb, and breakfast supplies were in fridge. I loved all the details, little mice statues, microwave hidden in the wall, hobbit windows, …
- Andrea (8/5): Perfect getaway to pause and take a break. - Secluded, quiet and peaceful. Short on space using the toilet.
- Edward (8/5): Very good -
- Fahd (10/5): Exceptional -
- Felicity (10/5): Unique and cosy while living my best hobbit life! - Probably the best accommodation I’ve ever stayed at! Absolutely loved it!!
- Sam_toman (10/5): A short sentence to sum up your stay. (Joking) sensational - It’s a hobbit hole! It’s escapism at its finest and a great way to end a day at Hobbiton. Johan is a great host too
- Genevieve (10/5): Perfect stay in a Hobbit Hole! - Amazing place to stay! The perfect stay after spending the morning in Hobbiton - Johan was very welcoming and provided everything we needed including a lovely breakfast. Cambridge was a short drive away with plenty of options for dinner. We loved all the little lord of the rings details within the hobbit hole, we wish we could have stayed longer! The fireplace was so cosy and we could watch the Lord of the Rings DVDs and the cat even came to say hello - thank you so much for a lovely stay Nothing
- Kai (10/5): Must stay before going to Hobbiton!! - super cosy! It’s the best way to spend the night before you go to Hobbiton: cosy up by the fire watching LOTR/Hobbit in a very Hobbit Hole similar interior and the next morning having a simple homemade breakfast outside, it feels like your Hobbiton experience have started the moment you walked in!
- Wu (9/5): Superb -
- Yuri (9/5): Superb -
- Darryl (10/5): Even though it rained while we were there it added to the charm of it all. - It was a real charm, just like the movies.
- Grant (10/5): Unique experience -
- Marilyn (10/5): Rivendell - wow! I was really impressed by this place. first off the host was very friendly and helpful. the rest was so cosy and adorable. the attention to detail with all the little accents from the movies did not go unnoticed. if I could have booked this for the entire winter, I would! there wasn't anything I could fault.
- Imogen (9/5): Fun experience and stay when visiting hobbiton! - Host was very welcoming and helpful. Hobbit hole was charming and we could see so much thought had been put into it. Addition of breakfast was great!
- Jenni (10/5): Exceptional - A cosy setting made this an experience rather than just a stay. The log burner and electric blankets made it a great venue despite the wet weather.
Loved the outside kitchen for cooking breakfast.
- Bishop-curran (9/5): It was a beautiful place to stay. - Although we did not have breakfast the supplies were more than adequate. The cat came to say hello too which was a bonus. Conkers were also available :)
- Jessica (9/5): Absolutely amazing - The hobbit hole was so incredibly cute and comfortable to stay in. I loved every part of our stay.. as short as it was :(. We arrived late at night due to our flight arriving that day and delays at the airport, but Johan met us at that hour(8:30pm) to give us the keys. He also had a breakfast in the fridge we could’ve enjoyed, which we would’ve loved to if we didn’t have to get to our early morning excursion. There are so many perfect details that made this stay so special. Thank you so much Johan! We wish we would’ve been able to be there longer to enjoy the full extent of the hobbit hole. That we arrived so late and had to leave early due to our own travel itinerary :(
- Hugh (10/5): Brilliant - Unique place to stay and a friendly cat too :) Nothing
- Anita (10/5): Cosy, lovingly built hobbit haven - One of the best weekend stays we’ve had. Magical place and excellent jam! Wish I’d taken some away! Nothing
- Te (8/5): Very good -

The incredible craftsmanship that has been poured into this tranquil and charming hobbit hole is truly impressive. Discovering the intricate details during your stay is an enchanting surprise. - Philippa (10/5): A totally unique must do experience! - We had a warm welcome from our host on arrival and he showed us around the Hobbit Hole and explained about the outdoor cooking and dining facilities as well. The Hobbit Hole was amazing, full of character, cosy, comfortable and beautifully presented. It was set in a secluded garden, so was peaceful and quiet. The supplies left for us to cook breakfast made for a generous breakfast and the home made bread and jams were delicious. Cambridge was only a 10 minute drive away and we chose to go there for dinner but the barbeque was at the Hobbit Hole if we'd wanted to cook our own. We loved our stay and would definitely recommend.
- Garbi (10/5): Exceptional - For fans of Middle Earth, this is a perfect place. It is secluded with great landscape views.
We loved the little outdoor cooking area and sitting next to the fire.
The Hobbit Hole was very quaint and comfortable to be in. The work that was put into building this place and all of the finer details makes it a very unique experience that we really enjoyed. The mosquitoes (just bring some bug repellant and you'll be fine).
- Martin (9/5): Superb -
- Sara (9/5): Superb -
- Lazana (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect, one of the best experience we ever had. Thank you for this perfect place you made for us visitors. Thaank you.

Warm, cozy and very well done, great amenities, it really felt like it was your own little home. Had a wonderful breakfast of fresh homemade bread, eggs and jam. This is a must stay for anyone looking for a little piece of the Shire.
- Cherryl (10/5): it was a wonderful stay for me and my husband. The host is very accommodating and very nice. - we were provided a good breakfast choice its hard to turn on the built in heater
- Beatrice (8/5): A LOTR fan must try, but not for everyone (cat complementary :D) - It was definitely LOTR and Hobbit themed! Everything inside and outside felt like being in Middle Earth The bathroom needed a bin (for us girls it is really important) and we would have liked to at least have dates on the open food in the fridge (bacon, milk especially). We didn’t feel safe/comfortable eating it.
- Sarah (9/5): Great stay after visiting Hobbiton - Very good for fans of Lord of the Rings- the wooden art and also the hobbit house was so real and made you feel like you were living in Hobbiton itself! Breakfast provided and delicious. Clean and good facilities 👌 host was very helpful. A little bit off the beaten track, and without wifi or reception it’s a bit hard to use things like Google Maps. Bathroom also a little small, but fine for us.
- Leilani. (9/5): Superb - Very rustic and cozy.
Beautiful little area outside. It's very quiet and serene.
The inside is super clean. The whole thing was perfect size. It didn't feel small at all.
- Marc (10/5): What a place! - Everything’s just perfect, we had an amazing stay at Johan’s place.
A brand new BBQ was just added so we were lucky to be able to enjoy a great dinner at the Hobbit Hole.
Thanks again Johan we will definitely come back if we return to New Zealand. Nothing
- Peter (9/5): Superb -
- Linda (10/5): Cute and cozy - Loved it all. Yohan was friendly and great to talk to. Explained everything we needed to know and we had a great time chilling out in this county setting. Bacon and eggs for breakfast was great! Definitely go again. There was nothing we didn't like.
- Abhinitee (10/5): Fabulous hobbit hole - Living like hobbits! Amazing experience, the indoor fireplace, every single detail in the house, and the trilogy was available to watch, this was a hit of the night! I'm not fond of cats and they have one on-site. His visits were a bit too often which I didnt quite like. But no dramas, he just wanted us to pet him/her 🙂
- Middleton (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adam (8/5): Would definitely stay again if in the area. A compact quirky comfortable nook, great value. - Lovely breakfast ingredients provided, eggs, bacon, bread and orange juice, which you cook for yourself. Comfy bed, great shower, fan in bathroom. Lovely quiet country environment ... very peaceful. A bit of a surprise to have shower curtain instead of a "door" of sorts to bathroom, buti in defense a good ventilation fan provided.
- Chunhong (10/5): Like in the movie - The host’s passion for the Hobbiton and guitar, the hobbit hole is cozy and the cat is cute, the breakfast is great, the whole set of CD for The Lord of the Ring is cool, the souvenirs are wonderful. Good start for our two weeks trip.
- Andrea (10/5): be a hobbit and stay in the rabbit hole- breakfast included - everything was great, the person was kind, breakfast excellent and the place really special-
I recommend staying for something different
even though there is no wifi and reception is poor it is worth getting away from it all to stay in such a unique place nothing-
- April (10/5): Perfect night long stay. - Fireplace, perfect for LOTR nerds, great location near Hamilton and matamata. Shower pressure was amazing. Bathroom was separated with a curtain instead of a door.
- Fran (10/5): Unique and Relaxing - - Well, we researched the facilities and location offered at the Hobbit Hole before booking and were not disappointed. It was of no consequence to us that there's no wifi (although we did pick some up).
- Peaceful, quiet and comfortable - a real getaway stay.
- Both Cambridge and Hamilton are within easy driving.
- The inclusion of being able to cook up breakfast was a huge bonus, thankyou for offering this.
We will be spreading the word to our friends about Rivendell Farmstay Hobbit Hole and encouraging them to take time out and stay. - No issues for us at all.
- Bob (10/5): A unique place with extra touches everywhere - It’s a beautiful unique quirky place to stay, the accomodation the breakfast the cat! All were great. The welcome was so good and the extra touches in the hobbit hole were so cool, thank you, loved it!
- Linda (10/5): Beautiful , Cosy and really feels like home will visit again. - Feels like home Nothing
- Andrew (7/5): Beds, beds beds. - Loved the setting. The layout was quaint.
The fireplace warmed the entire place. Over the past 8 years I have traveled through out the top half of the north island of New Zealand overnighting in various motels, hotels etc. And the most important part of the stay is an excellent bed. Like most places in NZ this needs serious consideration.
- Siao (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jonathan (9/5): Superb -
- Olivia (9/5): Brilliant, value for money. Would have stayed longer and will book again. - A real hidden gem! Great breakfast provided, location was handy to Cambridge. Close to the road but nestled away. Lovely LOTR touches around the hobbit hole and can tell a lot of thought and effort has gone into it. Impressive it was all handmade! No complaints at all!
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Ambience, fire, nice place to stay... No decent mirror to put makeup on.
Pillows too big and hard.
No Sky......
- Waa (8/5): Very good -

Needs a mirror

Loved staying here and the breakfast was amazing….. warm fire in the property and outside if you want to make s’mores…..so much fun and loved how quiet it was and rural. A must stay and the hosts are great enthusiasts of Lord of the Rings and absolutely loved that!!!!
