Guest Reviews
- Jody (10/5): - We loved it here and will be back.
- Tamas (10/5): -
- Sarah (4/5): More shabby than chic - overpriced - The view from our window (top floor, room 9) is lovely.
Location convenient to the Tor.
The shampoo, conditioner and body wash smelt great and seem to be good quality.
The common area with sofas is comfortable and peaceful.
The garden is a nice oasis to sit in.
It was quiet while we were there. The manager was not on site when we arrived and we saw him the following morning, in his open dressing gown.
There's no welcome information either per message or in the rooms, so we didn't know whether the kitchen was available for guests to use, or how anything in the dining room works, or the breakfasts.
We witnessed other guests also being confused.
The photos of the dining room are misleading, as they show tables set, which was not the case - breakfast was self-serve with shared spreads, butter etc. and the previous diners' crumbs.
This is more of a hostel-style set-up.
The general vibe of the property feels like a hostel, not a BnB for which the prices charged are justified.
The room didn't have an electric kettle, hairdryer or table/2 chairs as described/pictured on the listing.
We had to ask for a fan (it was over 30°).
The room decor was shabby, dated, dirty carpets, peeling wallpaper.
The "shower in a cupboard" was cramped and a bit awkward. A shower caddy would be helpful.
The garden is nice but overgrown and not maintained, big weeds in pots. The labyrinth (pavers) are barely visible.
Overall, it's a charming but unfortunately run-down property that could be really lovely and welcoming if some more thought, care and effort went into the facilities and decor. Definitely overpriced for what it is. The photos and some descriptions need to be updated, as well as clear information about the common areas provided.
- Daniella (9/5): Perfect place to stay - The owner was super helpful and friendly. I loved the house and garden, my bedroom was very comfortable and had a lovely view. Also loved how close it was to walk up to the Tor and the Chalice Well. Nothing.
Siempre había agua bien caliente a toda hora.
- Alina Cristina (10/5): Thank you, it was a lovely stay! - We likes Julian's availability and care for the guests. When the house is fully cleaned, it looks beautiful.
- Saray (10/5): Mágico y cálido - Julián y las personas que estaban allí todas eran muy amables y era como estar en casa.
- Perfect (2/5): Very disappointed - No TV in the room and no tea or coffee making facilities either. We had to go down two flights of stairs to make our own drinks in a grubby kitchen area. We saw only one staff member in the whole of our stay and there was no welcome pack.
- Whitehead (5/5): - Nicely situated, Host was great . The room was cramped the shower was adequate and the 🚻 was very small .
- Gina (10/5): A great space to let go of the noise of everyday life! - Beautiful property and a great location for anyone wanting a quiet experience. I loved the labyrinth in the garden. The host was friendly and helpful, and made fresh bread everyday! I would certainly stay here again. It’s a bit of a walk to the town centre and it’s up a hill so it may be a challenge for folks who do not want to walk a lot. But worth the trek if it’s a quiet location you’re seeking.
- Kristina (5/5): Good location - Julian is a wonderful host- very welcoming & caring Room 5 needs black out blinds, the showers next door have very loud plumbing
- Anita (10/5): - Wonderful kind staff
- Manfred (8/5): -
- Shiu Jung (8/5): -
- Claudia Aurora (9/5): -
- Anna (9/5): Lovely - I liked the friendliness and approachability of Justin. Professional and homely in one. The choice of bread and toppings was satisfactory. Especially when we understood that the content in the fridge was for us to use (and not other residents'). Nothing.
- Lidia (8/5): -
- Wendy (10/5): Enjoyed our stay - We stayed as a group of six for Glastonbury carnival. Let’s be honest it’s not perfect, it’s not luxury but it had everything we needed , clean , tidy , comfy beds . And the best bit is Julian the host what an amazing guy , Warm welcome , went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed . And fresh bread made for breakfast . 20min walk into Glastonbury town .
- Julia (10/5): Perfect stay - The host was friendly and informative. The place is at the bottom of the tor easy walk to town too. Parking.
- Florencia (10/5): This was one of the most special places I’ve ever been to and Julian’s property was a fundamental part of it. He’s and a - My brother and I absolutely loved this place!! Julian is one of the nicest hosts I’ve ever had. The accommodation is absolutely stunning.
We were driving so getting there was very easy, but then we also realized it was very walkable from Glastonbury center and to The Tor as well which it was our first reason to visit this beautiful town.
Our room was super cozy and comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and everything was clean and in great condition.
The house itself is big, clean and stocked with all you could need. Something to highlight is the great sense of peace and harmony you can feel while being in there at all times. We loved everything about it.

- Steph (10/5): Excellent place that suited our group to spend great quality time together in a relaxed environment - It was a relaxed homely property.. great vibe.. Julian was exceptional, very friendly and informative about places of interest and where to eat etc.. communication excellent available at anytime.. property well stock of breakfast items to suite all dietary needs Nothing the group didn’t like.. some of the shower rooms/ toilets weren’t spacious.. but wouldn’t put us off returning
- Nathalie (10/5): Love this place! - Julian was the most amazing host. I loved the house, it feels like home. We enjoyed the kitchen a lot because we gathered there, we cooked breakfast (the food was organic), we met other people, and felt like a big family.
It's very close to Tor and the Chalice well. We walked to get there.
Also, the town is around 20 minutes walk but very enjoyable.
- David (9/5): Great Stay at the Foot of the Tor - Phoenix Rise is a massive rambling house, run as an open access, 'be at home' place - slightly like a commune. Our room was small, but very comfortable, the garden and communal areas were really nice, and breakfast a 'help yourself to what's there' affair (excellent bread and eggs magically appear overnight, probably gathered by the breakfast fairy) - no time limit, just do your own thing. There is a yoga studio if you are so inclined, and it's a nice space in which to start the day. The staff, particularly Julian (the leader), are really nice and so helpful. All in all, it's a great place to explore Glastonbury, everything being a short walk away. Nothing to speak of, except maybe a posse of other guests who ate all the eggs. Not the house's fault.
- Tammi (10/5): Excellent environment, felt at home and was able to meditate, feel the Earth and lean into the expansive energy of the r - Location, staff, vibe. No comment
- Hans Peter Birk (8/5): -
- Olga (9/5): -
- ReLeI (5/5): Could be charming but needs deep cleaning and renovation - Good distance from Chalice Well and one of the paths to the Glastonbury Tor. Ok distance from city center.
Breakfast selection was great, including different types of bread and cereals, and homemade compotes.
Calm and quiet, you can have a good night sleep if other guests are not noisy. Outdated room, carpeted (typical in the UK but still nasty).
Has not seen deep cleaning in a while with spider webs in the windows and other places (plus have I mentioned the carpet?)
- Cathy (7/5): -
- Andrii (3/5): You must be twice chipper - Quite place, nice view.. very friendly personal It’s really old, bad smell.. not really looking like in photos… we cannot stay there… moved to travelodge which looks like luxury after this hotel
- Eileen (7/5): - Clean and quiet
- Maria florencia (10/5): Maravilloso!! - Todo!!! Nada !!!
- Maria florencia (10/5): Maravilloso!! - This is my second time staying at Phoenix, and there couldn't be a better place in Glastonbury! The facilities and Julian's work are wonderful! I always choose them again!
- Joanne (9/5): Peaceful & Comfortable stay - Julian and Danielle were very friendly, helpful & welcoming. The house and our room was very clean. It was peaceful and in perfect distance to visit Glastonbury Town . My room was on the ground floor and I had plenty of room to use my walking frame to get into the house & and ground-floor room.
- Kaspa (10/5): - I found the atmosphere of the whole place so calming, and the building is beautiful, (which made me happy) with a great view too! And the staff were so nice :) Especially as I booked a bit late, they were so patient and kind with sorting the keys 🔑 Thank you!
- John (8/5): -
- Adam (5/5): Fair - Close to Tor. Parking. Thin walls and noise on stairs at night. Thin curtains and security light directly outside coming on throughout the night. Limited breakfast options. Cook your own eggs, load the dishwasher.
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rajba- (10/5): Exceptional - We really enjoyed our time at this lovely B&B. The host was exceptionally helpful and made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. Everything was cosy, clean, and comfortable — just what we needed. We’ll definitely be coming back!
- Stewart (6/5): Pleasant - A peaceful location. Car parking available. Friendly host. If you need to chill Having to prepare our own breakfast. The price for our stay was too expensive. Ideal place for guests wishing to get away from it all. Not a television anywhere.
- Tim (8/5): Very good -
- Nina (7/5): It was ok for two nights. - A convenient Location from which you have easy access to Glastonbury. It is a self-catering facility, which wasn’t that clear when booking. The ouddated room was a bit cramped with furniture which left not much room to move around. Especially the bathroom was interestingly nested inside a built-in closet. We’ve managed but all in all the price is a bit overrated.
- Hayes (9/5): Superb -
- Cor (9/5): Superb -
- Emma (8/5): Good stay enjoyed location. - All very clean /beds comfortable Bathroom light / string broken .
- Ellie (9/5): Perfect for our short stay in Glastonbury. - Great location to climb the Tor. More basic than we were expecting but still a lovely little spot to stay.
- Maria (10/5): Perfect place to truly experience what the area has to offer - Location, breakfast, property character and above all else, the hosts! N/A
- Ruth (10/5): Peaceful and relaxing stay on the edge of Glastonbury - Julian has made this house an upgraded home from home. Each room has its own gentle, relaxing yet uplifting theme with a mix of hotel chic with contemporary splashes. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom and shower lovely, and the touches like a comfy chair at the window (overlooking the most amazing views) were excellent.
The breakfast room was well stocked with 'help yourself' cereals, yogurt, jams and honey etc, gluten free options and fresh brown bread, cook your own eggs, and a well stocked crockery cupboard, alongside and excellent selection of teas and fresh coffees. You need to wash up yourself, but that's part of the fun :)
The intimate garden has a walking labyrinth and relaxing chairs, and is set back off the in road to Glastonbury town, around a 15-20 minute pleasant walk to the high street, and literally 100 yards from the edge of the foot of the Glastonbury Tor (woodland and hillside walk with breathtaking 360 degree viewpoint).
Julian was really accommodating with letting us leave luggage safely on the last day till the afternoon, and extremely helpful with contact numbers for taxi rides.
Thanks for a great stay :)
- Tiffany (10/5): Exceptional - A charming property right on The Tor. I had a lovely time here. Julian the host, is a wonderful person and the atmosphere he creates is so welcoming and one of inclusivity.
It has a nice communal kitchen and garden which is a great place to meet people if you’re feeling social. Equally lends well to your own space. Thank you Julian for making my time so great!
- Corinda (8/5): well looked after by Julian the manager ! - The room had spectacular views from the bedroom window, of Somerset . Clean, quiet and bright room
- Mcconchie (10/5): Wish I could stay for longer - The hospitality of the host was the best
The grounds are lovely
The nearness to the Tor
The bed was super comfy. Great night sleep.
- Beverley (9/5): Excellently stay, very friendly welcoming and quiet -
- Dom (10/5): Exceptional -
- Iris (9/5): Superb - Julian is a great host! We had a great time. The room had a stunning view. Close to the tor its perfect to explore Glastonbury.
- Julie (1/5): Awful, noisy, uncomfortable, awful location, shower at the end of the bed in the bedroom!!! - Nothing Bedroom, beds, not acceptable to have a shower in the bedroom at the end of the bed!! Disgusting. Black areas all over the floor where water has obviously damaged it. Paid the same amount as friends who all had separate bathrooms. Not healthy breathing in all condensation and mould from the shower next to the bed!! No where to hang towels. No where to put shower gels etc in shower, hanging space for clothes a few coat hangers on the wall behind the door. Mattress awful. Kept waking up each time I moved as felt was rolling out of bed as mattress higher in the middle. Such a noisy room and location. Awake until 2om each night ftom the noise. No where to park. Would not recommend at all. Should in no way have to pay the same amount as others either real bathrooms!! Will take further.
- Lesley (9/5): Superb -
- Åsa (8/5): A delightful place to stay in Glastonbury - The experience of my staying eas an overall pleasant 4 nights. It was a nice house, light and cosy at the same time. The people, everyone from Julian the manger to the other people stayng there was nice ones and easy to connect to and I found both Julian and other guests helpful and created a good atmosphere.
There was a tiny very nice garden to sit in as well, love that! Maybe a bit thin walls, but nothing to worry about.
- Lucy (5/5): Lovely position of property but it felt tired and dated. Should be down as room only not breakfast. - Position was good, near white spring and Tor and off main road No welcome when arrived. You had to find your breakfast and find out where things were to make porridge yourself, not enough fresh options available like berries or honey. Didn’t bother with breakfast on last morning.
- John (10/5): The Phoenix and the Dragon at the Tor. - Love it. Every moment. So close to the Tor.
The vibe, thank you Julian.
It's the kind of place that you'll go, and go, and go, and go again.
My girlfriend's birthday present. Glastonbury. To take her first steps on her journey. Couldn't have asked for more. That we had to leave when our holiday was over.
- Vlatkica (9/5): Superb - We liked location, comfortable beds and clean room and bathroom. Also we appreciate a privat parking place but also a beautiful garden. Most of all the owner of the hotel Mr Julian was very kind and hospitable. We would like to return again. We warmly recommend this place.
- Gerwine (8/5): Beautifull spot with a nice host really nearby the Thor and Chalice Well. - Very nice and kind crew. Beautifull spot at the foot of the Thor. Near Chalice Well. Not much organic food. The Walking road to the centre is first a bit noisy and full of traffic.
- Anais (10/5): Spectacular house with a lovely host ! Julian is very helpful, with a good knowledge about the area, friendly and always - Gorgeous house with helpful, kind and friendly host! Delicious breakfast ! Close to the centre and the Tor! 100% recommend. Nothing I can think of, for me and my sister everything was lovely ☺️
- Lex (7/5): Good -
- Timothy (8/5): Very good -
- Georgina (10/5): Exceptional - Peaceful
Lovely vibe
Labyrinth
Views A little bit far from centre of town to walk with luggage. Not many taxis available so hard to get back to.
- Sarah (8/5): The perfect home away from home to explore Glastonbury - Loved the welcoming host, Julian who gave us a guided tour up the Tor! Great location to explore Glastonbury & a real experience, cosy room. The bed was too soft for me so I didn’t sleep very well. They could do with being slightly wider & firmer mattresses.
- Stefanie (9/5): Perfect base for a weekend in Glastonbury - The property is within walking distance of the town centre and very close to Glastonbury Tor. The staff were really friendly and helpful. We really appreciated the option to use the communal area and breakfast room.
- Linka (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely stay- staff were very welcoming and were able to access the kitchen and living room as well. Exceeded expectations
- David (8/5): Good 👍 - More heat available in the room in winter
It took a while for temperature to rise and never really felt warm Above
- Frank (8/5): Very good -
- Bennett (8/5): Very good - Great location, friendly staff very homely Beds were uncomfortable and would benefit from new mattresses
- Emma (8/5): Great location- comfy beds - The location was great and bed was very comfy. We had a great stay. Didn't see anyone to find out about the timings of the yoga and meditation- maybe a poster or welcome pack in the room with this information would be good. We found the sachets of the milk in the room were out of date
- Paul (5/5): Was okay, bathroom and beds were not good but quiet, clean and good breakfast choices. - Breakfast spread was good, price was reasonable although we travelled in January, quiet atmosphere, cute dog in the cabin outside, room was mostly pretty clean and WiFi was excellent. More honest advertising of what it's like, I felt the photos didn't do justice to how basic the set up was. Bathroom was incredibly cramped and beds were the most cheap springy basic mattress.
- Kassandra (7/5): Good - The retreat was very quiet and peaceful, which I really appreciated. It was a very clean, warm, and comfy room, and the lounge and garden were quite impressive. Julian was super friendly, a great host. Lots of great breakfast options were provided. The freshly baked bread was especially amazing! The room was a bit smaller than I anticipated based on the description. The ensuite shower especially is awkwardly positioned, making it a bit uncomfortable to use. Also, all indoor areas of the retreat are "shoes-off", which I don't remember being mentioned on the website (though I could be wrong). I kind of understand the reasoning behind it, but it was still somewhat awkward and uncomfortable having to take my shoes off in the hallway by the front entrance and leave them there before heading to my room.
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional - Really quite peaceful. Clean and tidy.
- Julie (7/5): Nice property in fab location - Basic accommodation. Clean, warm and comfortable. Perfect location. Breakfast was more than adequate with lots of choice. No TV etc but we didn't go away to watch TV in a room so no problem. Maybe a lil bit of a spruce up to the property would be good but nothing really negative to say.
- Ana (8/5): Very good - Good location The Toilette was to small, at least in the room they assigned us
- Desiree (10/5): Our stay was wonderful. The property is clean and harmonious. Julian has been an incredible host and made our stay speci - The harmony of the space
Cleanliness
Location Shower Did not hold temperature (too hot or too cold) however Julian was incredibly supportive and offered us to use an alternative shower.
- Kuli (10/5): Exceptional - Everything about this trip was 'Perfect'.
The location, facilities and host were great.
We will be back soon hopefully and thanks again xx
- Nancy (8/5): Very relaxing - Great calm and relaxed place to stay. Bathroom rather small, not a problem, but might be tricky for some guests
- Deborah (5/5): Passable - ?
- Kate (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, beautiful house.
- Alan (6/5): A pleasant stay in a spacious and clean well resourced house, improvements required for room 6 - The location was good, the house was light and spacious, the host; Julian, very accommodating, also helped me when I had forgotten my passkey for the keybox. I really appreciated him carrying some of our luggage upstairs to our room No 6. Breakfast certainly adequate and fresh baked bread a real bonus, Our bedroom was clean, and it was useful having private parking. I particularly liked the views from our room. Very little traffic noise at night and we could use the kitchen to heat food which was really handy. The shower was fine. The beds were adequate, however, the door to the ensuite appeared to have been taken off its hinges at some point and rehung to open outwards to save space. This created a problem as the lock is now on the outside and there is no means of shutting or locking the door properly. The hand basin is so small you cannot fill the electric kettle from it, also water splashes on to the floor. The toilet is really cramped, would not suit a large person. One wall was paper thin and I was woken up by the sound of the cistern flushing in the next room and accompanying noises at 7.00 each morning
- Love (9/5): Lovely, would stay again - Quiet, warm, super comfy bed. Facilities were great The security light outside was bright at night!
- Michelle (8/5): Very good - Friendly host. Julian is a lovely host. Beautiful views. Walking distance into town.
- Mark (2/5): Would not stay here again - Nothing Everything toilet to close to bed , no one to greet you on arrival, poor choose for breakfast no bowls ect out had to hunt for them .room to small for everything in it ,black marks on mirror.
- Teresa (9/5): Superb - Julian was a great host, very friendly and polite. Could have had more variety for breakfast.
- Archie (10/5): Relaxing getaway in an amazing area - The owners were cheerful and welcoming and The home made bread was amazing and the beds were super comfy, was right next to an amazing location and in the middle of two tor entrances it’s the perfect spot.
- Katerina (8/5): Very good - Superb location right at the bottom of the Tor Hill and 5 min away from Chalice Well. I would recommend staying at Phoenix for the quietness, the nature, and easy access to the city centre even without a car.
- Tracey (10/5): Amazing atmosphere, charming, comfortable and peaceful. - We loved everything about this property! The location is a short walking distance from the Tor path, the White Springs, the Chalice Well and town center. The manager, Julian is a gem; he is knowledgeable, kind, and a pleasure to talk to. Julian also made fresh bread to have with breakfast which really was delicious. The beds were the most comfortable, like sleeping in clouds. The place has such a peaceful quality. I highly recommend. I really don’t have any complaints. Maybe the bath towels could be slightly larger.
- Karen (5/5): Ideal for somewhere to put your head down - The location was good, fair on cleanliness Breakfast was dire, a selection of aldi tea/coffee, a loaf of bread, some cereals and expected to wash up after yourself. There were also some eggs and a frying pan if you wanted to cook yourself an egg. Felt more like you were staying in someone's home rather than a bnb
- Gloria (10/5): I've already booked to hold another seminar here, and would recommend to anybody! - Everything was perfect! It was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Julian was incredibly helpful and we cannot fault him. He is the perfect person to manage this venue.
- Diane (10/5): I loved staying at Phoenix Rise. And I’ve already booked another stay there. - Beautiful house and location. I enjoyed my stay there very much. The other guests and the host were lovely. Julian goes above and beyond to make your stay the best it can be. Nothing
- Avril (4/5): Won't be staying there again. - It was near The Tor Noisy guests, banging doors at 7am, shouting to each other. I was told that the communal spaces downstairs may be occupied with a group doing stuff, so not to disturb them.
I booked a double on suite but it was two singles squashed together. The toilet window wouldn't open. The bath was accessed by the staircase, so awkward getting two sets of clothes, towel and room keys back and forth.
The view was crap. The room was too small for the "double bed". I was asked to take my shoes off on entering the property. And there was no TV or radio in the room.
- Bennett (7/5): Good - Great location friendly staff Tired property but characterful
- Jane (7/5): Good -
- Gordon (10/5): A fantastic stay in Glastonbury - Breakfast was fantastic, many great fresh options. Provided a level 2 EV charger which was a great bonus for us. Our unit was spacious, comfortable and clean. This was perhaps our best accommodations in our 19 day visit to the UK. The host gave us great recommendations for things to see in the region. A short 15 minute walk to city center. Nothing whatsoever.
