- Woodson (10/5): Lots of good things to enjoy in Luoyang (the people! food!); great to be staying in the hostel. - I like to take the bus and the hostel is located about 15 mins walk from several bus stops. Of course you can get a taxi after walking to the nearby road, Zhengzhou Lu, less than 5 mins walk. Don't expect people to speak anything but Mandarin. I had my destinations and/or bus stops written out in Chinese (or on my phone) to show the taxi drivers. The bus drivers are very considerate and I showed or told them the bus stop where I wanted to get off. Have 1 rmb or 1.5 rmb for the bus. Hostel location is not so far from Peony Square; bit off the main roads and nice and quiet. Typical older neighborhood.
Oh, when I first arrived the taxi driver brought me to the entrance to the old compound and stopped to call the owner. I walked straight in and straight on to the door leading up the stairs. Stop a bit before entering that door into the building, look up to the top floor, and there's a sign set into the windows. And when you arrive at the 7th floor for the first time, there are signs that you're at the right place. Door on your right.
General: No need to be anxious but do keep your wits about you - the many electric scooters come from all directions and maybe you're not used to that. I know I'm not. My old habit - look both ways before crossing a one-way street and such. Same before stepping off the bus, opening the door to get out of the taxi. Not really fair since this is my kind of place and the owner is my kind of person. Be aware that you have 7 flights of stairs to walk up with your luggage. You can take it slow. I'll say it's worth it. I myself travel light, trotted up the stairs two at a time to be warm during the cooler weather of my stay, and slowed down at the 6th floor. (I'm older so don't be put off by any of this.) I enjoyed the nearby 'street food' area on Zhengzhou Lu this visit and will go there again. I'll be back in the spring.
