Guest Reviews
- Justin (1/5): Slumlords treat their tenants better - The only thing we liked was getting the hell out of there as soon as we could the next morning The fact that Booking.com allow this place on their website is a travesty. We arrived to find door to "apartment" unlocked with no one around. It's not even an apartment, its a basement of a house with stained, out dated appliances, and no air conditioning. A small ineffective fan was all that was available to circulate stale, musty air. Then, after a long day travelling and wishing to just get a decent night of sleep, we were "treated" to what sounded like dozens of people upstairs making all sort of racket, and passing by bedroom window making any chance of getting off to sleep impossible. after calling and finally getting a response i was told that they were celebrating a family wedding and that "i realized your booking clashed with that and i probably should have cancelled your booking because of that, but i will give you a partial refund and will ask our guests to go out the back to continue our celebration" I then explained that the bathroom had one roll of toilet paper with about 8 sheets on it, with a back up roll that only had about a dozen or so on it, so we would need toilet paper supplied. i was told it would be left out front of room, but on awakening the next morning it was never delivered. Because of all the noise, and worrying about what might happen to my rental car parked out front i was not able to get any sleep at all. I am in no way a picky traveller. All i want in a room is a place i feel safe in, a clean bed and a place to shower etc. In over 40 years of travelling this was by far the absolute WORST place i have ever had the misfortune to stay at. Why the owner totally misrepresented the listing is beyond me, but can only be described as fraud. In the end, we got out of there as quickly as possible in the morning, and had to drive to the local Walmart to use a toilet. Again, not toilet paper provided in room, but they did have at least a couple of dozen bath towels stacked all over the place.
- Alan (8/5): very good experience of the stay. - Very impressive for the host hospitality.
- Jude (8/5): The apartment is comfortable and warm. Represented with love. - Available and clean. Natural light in living space. Odd Steps in bathroom.
- Jordan (1/5): LOOk FOR OTHER PLACES TO STAY. - It had free parking and the bed wasn’t that uncomfortable. The property was absolutely disgusting. It was dirty, smelled horrible, had cockroaches and ants. There was leftover food from people and a bunch of random opened soap bars. The place smelled like mildew.
- Dancette (1/5): Terrible won’t be back at least to this location - Nothing, from the front yard of the house, then I went inside to check it out. Everything, the place was not cleaned, bed wasn’t made, bathroom was awful
dingy, stained bath tub. Bed was not made it, we left and had no plans to return that evening. I did call Sunny when I left and canceled our booking.
I went into town and grabbed a room at a hotel.
This was a very expensive weekend, having to get another room blew some of my budget.
I would like to be compensated for this 2 nite stay at Surf Ohana, I cannot refer friends or family to this location.
Please advise as I’m looking forward to hearing back from you as soon as possible. Having said this, I have been very pleased with all my past bookings with you.
Thank you!
Dancette
- Richard (1/5): Bad - Bad, i came to checkin but nobody was there. Calling the phone # provided at the app but no answer. I never use the room. I was not able to use the room because nobody pickup nor communicate about how we enter the place
- Joanne (2/5): Avoid at all costs - The bed was ok Everything else.
Arrived 5.05pm front door was open and car in driveway but couldn't find anyone. Left 3 messages but no response. I went up stairs and found the owner after 6pm. Explained that we were unsure if we had the right apartment as door pincode provided by Booking.com did not work so we were reluctant to move our bags in. We also note that the unit has no terrace, no sauna, and no visible washing machine and dryer as listed by Booking.com. Superficial cleaning only. Old bandaid blocking the up dirty bath Old half-eaten fish dinner left in fridge from a previous customer and the unit is cluttered and seems to be a repository for disused items. Too late to attempt to find an alternative for the night after 6pm. No wifi was obtained and it was a most unsatisfactory accommodation and poor marketing by Booking.com. Bookings from another country rely upon trust and honesty and this is a major breach.
Given the above I am looking to Booking.com for 50% recompense and to ensure this listing is amended so that other travellers are not duped as we were.

- Edward (2/5): Disappointed stay but it was only for one night - Good neighborhood and a 15 minutes drive to downtown Kailua-Kona . Television works well. Outdated apartment and bad odor smell . No air conditioning. Even though it had a ceiling fan in bedroom it was still humid in the room . It just seemed like a lot stuff all over the place . No where to hang your clothes because the closet was full of stuff. I did saw some big cockroaches in kitchenette area ! I wouldn’t stay here again .
- Aaron (7/5): Good - Staff was friendly and it was clean.
- Huan (5/5): Passable -
- Anonymous (9/5): Nice inexpensive and homey place. -
- Jung (8/5): Value for the money - Location and price was a bargain compared to the local hotels It has steps going into the bathroom
- Shuhang (3/5): Poor -
- Jeffer (9/5): Quiet neighborhood, comfortable bed. - Quiet and private. Difficult to find. We arrived after dark and had trouble locating the property. No lights on inside or outside and we had trouble finding light switches to find our way around.
- Grégoire (5/5): A lot of space and things but not the basics... - The appartment has a lot of space: kitchen, living room, bedroom, toilettes. Little / no communication from the owner. 2 big cockroaches in the kitchen, no toilette paper, not clean, no internet access provided during my stay...
- Darcy (6/5): all in all it was pleasant - location was great and easy enough to find. plenty of room, and was clean. had to buy toilet paper as there was less than a 1/4 roll, nothing in the cupboards. no batteries in the remote controls, couldn't watch any tv. cockroach scared the crap out of my friend.
- Traven (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gabriella (4/5): I would not recommend this place to stay unless nothing else is available. - The location is good and the hostess was very friendly. Although I could hear some family activities from upstairs, overall it was a quiet and relaxing place to sleep. The bathroom wasn't very clean and that was a bit turn off for me. There is no stove or hotplate in the kitchen to cook. The hostess showed my the beautiful backyard but I had no access to it as they were not home all day. The apartment is stuffed with old furniture, rugs and unnecessary items. It felt cluttered.
- Amelia (9/5): Superb -
- Heather (1/5): Did not stay here because it was so disgusting and I would not have an animal stay here!!! - I did not like anything about this property!!! The place is run down, disgusting, dirty, awful. There was no way I was staying the night here with my daughter. Once booked, person did not answer their phone or respond to messages sent. Terrible communication. After getting to the property door was left open and unlocked which felt weird just walking in. My daughter sat in the car because property was so bad. Owner is not helpful and unwilling to address concerns. Stay as far away from this place as you can, would be better off staying at an actual dump. Booking.com should remove this property from their site. Attempted to call book.com multiple times to attempt refund and after two hours of calling them and representatives hanging up on me I’m starting to think they are running a scam.
- Rundarae (10/5): Exceptional -
- Williams (1/5): We cancelled. This place was a dump. - Nothing. Everything.
- Margaret (5/5): Passable -
- Yukari (7/5): confortable - Staff is very kind.
- Cruz (10/5): Exceptional - It was refreshing and peaceful.. loved it
- Gabrielle (5/5): Passable -
- Yi (10/5): Great location, communicative host, smooth and great experience -
- Charlene (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stanley (10/5): Great comfy bed and coffee made it a great experience on the Kona side for the amount I paid. Cheers! - Convenient and accommodating.
- Greg (7/5): Good - Internet rock solid. Quiet. Steps in bathroom a little awkward.
- Valerio (4/5): Disappointing - the forgot my arrival and did not reply anywhere
finally they prepared the room in 30 minutes.
- Wendie (5/5): Passable -
- Elizabeth (5/5): We were only there to sleep, which was fine but anything beyond that I would not recommend. - The property was in a nice quiet neighborhood close to the town and it was an easy in. They even let us in a bit early. The place was very run down and didn’t have airflow. It was not as clean as it should have been.
- Ninah (3/5): Crummy, over-priced accommodations in a good location - Location within Kona/Kailua, easy drive to shoreline amenities and main highways, and easy parking in front of the apartment. Good Wifi. Bed was clean and comfortable, thankfully! The apartment, which appeared to be a converted garage, was old with dated, grungy furniture and and furnishings, and very cluttered and crowded, with dirty, scuffed fridge dominating living room (inside of fridge was clean enough, though), and sloping floor with cracked tiles. Bathtub was very stained. We couldn't find any cooking facilities, e.g., hotplate or microwave. There were coffee pots and coffee but no sugar or creamer, and very limited counter space. Most of the food items in the cupboards looked like stuff left by prior tenants and been there for years. Front door screen was torn, curtains on windows in bedroom were sheets. Neither TV worked, rather, once turned on, there were no streaming apps or live TV. Listing described a balcony and sauna, but didn't see those or access to either from our apartment, which also supposedly had a garden. It just had a front yard. It wasn't very soundproof--we could hear tenants upstairs talking and their footsteps on creaking floors Glad we were there just the night. It might have been more tolerable if much less expensive. At least, the hostess was very nice.
- Xinping (4/5): not worth the money - location stain on towel bedding, smells, dirt and saw 🪳
- Donna (4/5): Nice people at location just needed decluttering little deep cleaning some air circulation - Location so close to the events we plan great neighborhood safe quite Room cluttered cleaning stale bad air circulation
- Walter (8/5): Comfortable apartment at reasonable price within quick drive of downtown. - Very comfortable place with many amenities and supplies provided. Easy check in. Quick drive to downtown. Many towels provided. GREAT wifi! Minor quibbles with no major issues. Microwave didn't work, wouldn't heat up. A bit warm and stuffy in late afternoon. No A/C but ceiling fan and standing fan provided. Missing paper towels. Didn't realize I had to call a phone number upon arrival but once I did it was easy entry.
- Momo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katie (10/5): Had an amazing stay and will return very soon! -
- Alexandra (7/5): Good -
- Christine (1/5): Don’t. - Dirty and lots of mold. Also since a basement unit there was no breeze to get any air through a window since most of the unit was built into a hill and the fan was broken with no air conditioning. Hard pass.
- Ramon (3/5): Good for 1 night stay - The price compared to others on the area The apartment was smaller and cluttered. There is no need for a full size fridge if you don’t have a stove or cooking elements in the basement apt. The incoming step in the front door the step into the bathroom not safe especially at night. The home had a smell that’s hard to explain, it was hot in the sitting room even with the stand up fan they provided. The bed was comfortable and the ceiling fan made the room okay. The bathroom could be updated but I understand it’s Hawaii island living.
- Fanli (7/5): Good -
- Lori (7/5): We needed a quick place to sleep over for night near the airport and the unit worked just fine. - Location was good and cost effective for the one night stay we needed. Bed and towels were clean. Door was open and fans running to make unit cool since no ac. Food in fridge and used soap felt a little old. Random dishware in the cabinet so a few disposable cups
would have been helpful or a couple bottles of water.
- Claudia (8/5): Great place to stay, nice neighborhood. - Very pleasant hostess. Arrived just as we did. She graciously made accommodations for us to use an extra room in here home when to space we rented turned out to not be adequate for ur needs. We appreciated her help ver much. She is a lovely person and made a wonderful suggestion as to how and where to go about accomplishing our mission on The Big Island. The first step down into the rented space was a bit dangerous and unmarked as a step down. I nearly fell off the step twice. The space was exceedingly hot as it was a rainy humid day. She did provide two fans which helped some. I certainly did not expect any AC, but I was really hot all night. The upstairs room was much better.
- Wenlan (10/5): Amazing. - The host Sunny is such a nice and cute person! I really enjoyed staying there. She offered surf and snorkels for free and super nice breakfast. She also suggested me public places to go to the beach. I really really enjoyed the stay. I won't say it's the most clean. So shouldn't come if you are expecting 5 start hotel experience.
- Bensis (7/5): Good -
- Jenni (1/5): Bad -
