Guest Reviews
- Tara (8/5): - Staff was very friendly. Rooms slightly dirty.
- Kathryn (2/5): - BUYER BEWARE!!! This property charged me twice !! I paid through Expedia and then they also charged my credit card for the price of a room after I left! I’ve called several times and haven’t gotten it resolved. The place was ok, but not at the double price they charged me!
Also- be very wary about booking with Expedia. I had several issues on this trip to Hawaii and Expedia was no help! And when I tried to resolve it with the hotel and the airline they said since I booked through a 3rd party I had to call Expedia. Which I did and it still didn’t get resolved. A complete runaround with no one taking responsibility!!! And if an airline goes on strike, forget it. You are on your own. Not the relaxing trip I needed to say the least! I hope this helps others so this doesn’t happen to them.
- mary (10/5): - Quaint, convenient, and relaxing.
- Kristin (10/5): - The lodge is spectacularly located a mile from the world’s most active volcano. Amazing views and easy access to miles of trails. At 4,000 ft elevation, the air is cool. We wore long sleeves and jackets in August. The rooms are clean and comfortable, old fashioned with windows that open and no AC. The lobby areas need to be refurbished but were also clean. We didn’t try the restaurant. Overall we greatly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.
- V (10/5): - We had a very pleasant stay at Volcano House. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the atmosphere felt welcoming. The reception staff went out of their way to be helpful, and all the staff we encountered were polite and friendly throughout our visit. A lovely experience overall!
- carie (10/5): - The front desk staff were amazing and very professional.
- Sabine (10/5): - The locations is unique and special. I recommend it to anyone wanting to experience something out of the ordinary. The hotel is original and the staff is very friendly and helpful. It is quiet, and the view of the volcano crater from the rooms is outstanding. There are two cute souvenir shops and two places where you can eat and have drinks. All in all a unique experience without the hefty price tag.
- Keiichi (10/5): - Great place to stay!
- Deborah (9/5): A special experience - Exceptional location and views make this , historic hotel an exceptional experience especially if you get a room with a volcano view. Staff were not very helpful or efficient
- Abhijit (8/5): Very good -
- Ken (8/5): Went for the volcano and stayed in a room. - Nice stay in a period room. Good location for which to explore from. Everything was good
- Peter (9/5): excellent - very nice none
- LaQuiah (10/5): - This is a cute hotel. No tv, but our view was amazing, didnt even miss it since the volcano decided to erupt while we were there. So blessed to have witnessed this event. Staff was really nice and accommodating
- DeAna (10/5): - Staff are very friendly. Conveniently located in the park, so easy access to hiking. We had amazing views of the volcano eruption during our stay! Restaurant and gift shops on-site are very convenient. Highly recommend!
- Lucy (8/5): - great location great view clean comfortable bed little noisy old building friendly staffs dinning ok but very convenient
- William (10/5): - Staying on the volcano rim was amazing - the view from volcano house is spectacular - access to the walking tracks is at your doorstep. Breakfast and dinner were very good. Staff were super helpful.
- Kerry (4/5): - Beds were very uncomfortable, no hot water, check-in didn’t provide us any info, book info in room was water stained and couldn’t read. Bathroom extremely small. Need a major update.
- Abhijit (8/5): Costly but great experience with eruption viewing. - Great location to enjoy Volcano National Park and best location for Eruption Viewing without hiking.
Breakfast is great value.
Rooms were clean and well prepared. Front desk staff who checked us in at night didn’t provide any helpful information about available guest amenities, room features, wasn’t even sure of where our room was.
The hotel is costly for the value.
- Moore (10/5): Exceptional -
- Janey (10/5): Nothing like being front row to Pele’s fury! - Location can’t be beat! Rooms are comfortable but don’t expect a 4 star hotel experience. It’s all about the location.
- DEBRA (10/5): - Everything
- Scott (8/5): - There was no air conditioning so all of the cool air had to come from outside... The screens in our room were ripped so anything that wanted in could come in... Other than that, it was a great stay with a very nice and helpful staff..
- Ashwini Arvind (10/5): - Amazing view
- Neerja (10/5): Love this hotel. Stayed here before. Location is remarkable. Hotel staff are friendly. Available food is good value. - Location, location, location.
Hotel overlooks the volcano. Couldn’t want a better place to stay for the volcano viewing.
Great walking tracks around the hotel as well.
Restaurant has a good variety of food. A little pricey
- Anne-Marie (8/5): - The Volcano House is a historic hotel in a beautiful location. You can’t get any closer to staying near the volcano crater. You can see Halemau’mau crater from your window. The breakfast buffet is delicious. The staff is very nice. The only drawback is the hotel rooms haven’t been modernized in a long while. Carpet, furniture and bathroom are worn and had a strong musty smell. Also no refrigerator in room.
- Donna (7/5): Good -
- Fran (7/5): Good -
- Regina (7/5): Good - Location Noise, over crowding, parking
- Denise (10/5): Highly Recommend - The views were amazing. The hotel was like stepping back in time and was very quaint. Two gift shops offered plenty of volcano-themed souvenirs. The restaurant served an amazingly fresh and delicious buffet breakfast, which we enjoyed while watching the volcano. The omelet chef prepared delicious eggs of your choice right before our eyes. The rooms could use a bit of updating, but they were still lovely!
- Nicolette (4/5): Disappointing. This is an wxpensive hotel and i believe they couod so better - The location is perfect and the hotel has a lot of nostalgia! There is no hot water for showering, the restaurant is so understaffed that they stop taking names 1.5 hours before the last seating.
- David (8/5): Unique and special place to stay - breakfast buffet excellent, but pricey Water temperature for showers too cold
- Mary anthoneth (10/5): - It sa awesome to see the volcano and nice to stay in colon house . Highly recommended
- Tracey (9/5): Great stay😁🌋 - Great view and nice staff at the check in. Bathroom was super small
- gregory (8/5): - Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- Patricia (6/5): - Great location for hiking. But during an eruption zero priority is given to volcano house paid guests.
- Jacqueline (8/5): Wonderful experience. - We enjoyed the menu at the bar, the free coffee station, and the complimentary minosa was a lovely touch. The ability to hike the rim after dark was fantastic, but experiencing episode 25 was priceless. Could use free water stations, as we really appreciated that benefit at all the other hotels we stayed at on the four islands. There was also very little hot water in the shower.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Volcano House has rustic charm with an unbeatable view of the volcano caldera. Staff welcome you with a mimosa and cookie. You can sip hot chocolate beside the fireplace or eat a delicious breakfast while watching the lava flow. Truly memorable experience!
- Linette (10/5): An iconic experience! - The front desk clerks were very friendly and accommodating. The view over the volcano was magnificent--what a wonderful opportunity to have that view from the hotel. Meals at both restaurants were excellent!
- Briedi (8/5): Very good - We ate dinner at the lodge at Uncle George's Lounge. Food was great however PRICEY! We got a table by the window overlooking the crater and actually saw it turn orange and "flame up" briefly which was exciting. The rooms are super basic but it is a historic place so that's the charm. The fireplaces were both going and lots of people stirring around. There is complimentary mimosas on arrival and cookies in the evening; fresh coffee in the lobby in the morning. Nice touches!! Two gift shops in the hotel as well. :) We had King room overlooking crater - very cool! (although full window screens made it difficult to get decent pics) Nice large closet for all your stuff. Really everything was good - would've been neat to have had some decor upstairs in hallways - such as historic photos like downstairs, or something! It was just all bare white walls. No biggie, just kinda blah! Also would've been nice to have had an extra chair in our room.
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Jennifer (10/5): - Great location and we enjoyed our stay. Parking was a little difficult, spots are limited. Bring snacks - the selection of snacks to buy is very limited.
- Fuad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Liang (8/5): Very good - Location is perfect.
- Emi (7/5): Friendly employees - Location is perfect 🤩 Hot water is running out so quickly during shower.
- Ben (10/5): - We stayed in this property for one night while exploring the island. The hotel has great character and the staff were all very friendly. The excellent location on the edge of the volcano and the nice food in the restaurant made it an enjoyable stay.
- Rachel Kristine (10/5): - Unique hotel in the National Park. Rooms are not modern but clean. Hotel bar and restaurant was excellently
- Jon (7/5): Good stay overall. - Staff good overall. Coffee bar guy Jeff helpful. Breakfast Buffet good and reasonable at $19 per Person. Room- nice quiet but paper thin walls/ no TV, fridge or ice on floor. Front desk easy check in. Bar was good and we ate at the counter. Food is fair to good category. Wine surprisingly decent list to select from- Good. Location was great. Price is a little high for what you get as your paying for the location. See above
- Abhinaya (7/5): Good -
- Beth (7/5): Staff was very sweet; they have complimentary mimosas upon check in. Really good! You tube cam of volcanic activity 24 - View from property is like nothing you will find anywhere else! How many hotels overlook a volcanic crater? Walking/hiking trails right off the property. If you are able, hike down to Kilauea Iki crater. It is awesome to hike inside a volcanic crater. Rooms are dated and small. Though clean.
- Thomas (10/5): - A unique experience of looking out the window of the room into the caldera of the volcano.
- Zoe (4/5): Disappointing -
- Carolyn (8/5): Perfect - Location within the National Park Nothing
- Valerie (8/5): - Thé
- Mitchell (9/5): Fantastic place to see the National Park and volcanos within. - So this is a historic lodge type facility and it was exactly what we signed up for - charming. I am sure that back in the day it was a luxurious place. What has not changed is the location, right on the volcano's edge. Rooms were not modern but clean, and comfortable. The bed was welcome and comfy after a long day of travel. Food was good for the breakfast buffet but not anything extravagant. Michelle at the front desk gets a shout out. She treated everyone like a personal friend. We thought that the smoke in the place was from the volcano. Turns out it seems to be from the wood burning fireplace. Cough.
- grace (10/5): - Wonderful! Perfect location to stay for volcanoes NP. Didn't think we would catch an eruption but so thankful a staff member went down the hallway at 5AM loudly declaring "we have an eruption!!!!" So we got up and caught the eruption in the predawn hours in the dark which was AMAZING, as this episode was done before night fell. Tiny rooms but nice big closet to store stuff. Tiny bathrooms, tiny everything, dated rooms, but clean and neat and simple, perfect for walking 20 steps out to the back to see the volcano eruption!
- Chris (9/5): Volcano House is the place to stay when visiting Hawaii Volcanoes NP. - The location is unbeatable; you are on the crater rim with a view of Kilauea and close to hiking trails. All the staff we interacted with were friendly and helpful. The hotel also offers cool perks like complimentary mimosas at check-in and free bike rentals.
- Bob (10/5): - Nice
- Genevieve (10/5): - Old fashioned charm in the most beautiful of surroundings.
- James (4/5): - I asked one of the staff members for a plastic cup. She was quite rude and told me I was not allowed to walk around in the property. Really… A plastic cup. The hot water was not existent and warm at best. There were dirty dishes left in front of our window. We let the front desk know, but they were never removed. For $400 a night I would expect better.
- Nancy (10/5): - So glad we decided to book rooms here, as Kilauea was erupting and seeing it at night was awesome.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Classic Hotel - Special place to stay. No TVs, no AC but it cooled down quickly and a good bit in the evening so it wasn't an issue. However, the smoke from the fireplaces seemed the permeate the rooms overnight. I think the floors were noisy for the people below. Great to be right in the mix. Wasn't crowded. Loved the welcome drink. Restaurant and bar were great. The negatives are all reasonable tradeoffs for staying in a historic National Park hotel with a view of the caldera but they should be known before arrival. Shower was nice and in good condition for the age.
- Kelie (6/5): Pleasant -
- Carol (10/5): Exceptional - Spectacular location
Classic vintage property casual unpretentious
- Teerasak (7/5): Good -
- Brian (8/5): Staff was great! - Great Room could have been better and updated.
- Laurie (9/5): Superb -
- James (10/5): - Great view of the volcano from our room and dining area and it was active! Staff was great, food was great and our room is really comfortable. No TV but who cares when you can watch a volcano erupt
- Jj (7/5): Good - Great location if you're looking to stay in the park. The hotel/rooms are definitely in need of a renovation. Breakfast is not included, but they do serve free coffee for guest by the check-in counter in the morning.
- Raghvinder (10/5): A must stay. - Location and the ability to see red lava spattering from the volcanoe at night
- James (10/5): - Great location and service. At busy times there was not enough overbite designated parking.
- Joe (10/5): - Best place to stay to enjoy the national park.
- Sandra (10/5): Exceptional - The history of the place and views of the Volcano.
- Pam (10/5): Definitely stay again, but pack our own food - Nice staff, was greeted with a mimosa. That was cool. Restaurant food was terrible. We ordered the most expensive, we were hungry. And left most on the plate. The mahi mahi was the worst. We wished we ate our hard boiled eggs and saved 150.
Figured we paid for the view.
- Vaida (10/5): Location is amazing!! Small rooms but comfy beds and staff is soooop friendly and nice! Thank you! - Location location!!! 10+
- Brittany (10/5): - This was an amazing place to stay and adventure in the park and surrounding area! What a view! Great and memorable stat. Thank you!
- Arie (6/5): - The view to the caldera is the only thing unique to this hotel.
- Brea (10/5): - Helpful staff, unbelievable location. Worth it
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Super friendly and helpful. Parking is a nightmare during the eruptions (to be expected)
- Amy (10/5): Will go again! - A quick overnight with my husband, hoped for some volcanic activity but had a wonderful time anyway. N/A
- Rebecca (10/5): - People were unusually friendly. Loved the free mimosa the night we checked in!
- Laura (8/5): Very good -
- Alicia (10/5): - Great view of the volcano. Older hotel, but location is worth it. Clean and comfortable.
- Joann (5/5): Great location, some staff HORRIBLE - We woke to an erupting volcano! And if not for that, we would have given a lower review! Although some staff (front desk and two women at breakfast buffet) were super nice and helpful, the bartender and a server at the restaurant were awful. Absolutely miserable. We were ignored and made to feel a bother. Bartender was in 20’s/30’s, dark hair tall, gauge earrings, didn’t get his name. Rude and should not work with the public. It wasn’t just to us, the people around us also felt the same. The hotel itself is what i would expect in a national park. If you want tv in the room, there wasn’t one. Everything in room very dated, but clean. It was super awesome to be able to stay and have the volcano fountaining when we woke to check at 4 am. It was worth the $338 for the one night.
- Wendy (10/5): The best and only location right on an active volcano rim. - Amazing, only accommodation on the crater rim. Easy walks. Ate in both formal dining and casual dining, both with stunning views.
We drove but didn’t use the car preferring to walk.
- Eric (10/5): Highly recommended - Conveniently located inside the national park. Hiking trails along the rim are literally steps away from the inn. Was fortunate to be able to watch the Kīlauea eruption from the inn. Can’t get any better. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were comfortable and as good as one can expect from a place over 170 years old. Best part is there was no television as one should be outdoors enjoying nature and the night skies.
- Zhe (8/5): Good experience - Good location and 24hours volcano views. No TV and table in guest room.
- Rolando (6/5): Good for one and done - We stayed for one night in this historic hotel on the rim of the Kilauea volcano. The building is quite old, and it shows. The entire structure has a smokey, gross, mildewy smell to it. The carpet is gross and the walls and doors have not been cleaned of dirt, grime, and hand prints in a long time. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. For the experience of seeing the volcano's glow at night, it was worth staying for one night but I wouldn't go back again.
- Brian (8/5): - Loved the location and quiet. Rooms are basic and a bit aged. Parking a challenge
- Serina (7/5): Good - Location of room with proximity to kilauea crater No elevator, I have hip problems and was difficult to walk up/down the stairs
- Clark (9/5): Superb - Fine dining restaurant had excellent views and service. Very amenable. Casual restaurant ended service a little early for our needs, but they were experiencing extreme conditions and is understandable
- Katherine (10/5): Worth every penny! - This was a truly unique and enjoyable experience to stay at a beautiful and historic place at the edge of a crater! The rooms are beautiful and clean, food options are good and morning buffet (extra $) was very good. So easy to see the park from here.
- Angela (10/5): Highlight of our trip to the Big Island - The historic hotel is very well kept. Damon the bartender was fun and friendly. Front desk staff also great! Views of the volcano from the rooms are spectacular. Also great trails right from the hotel. Highly recommend.
- Louise (8/5): Very nice - I found the room to be very comfortable although the one chair was not very "butt" friendly. A cushion would have helped or maybe an overstuffed chair. The refrigerator was a little noisy and had not been cleaned out after the last guest.
- Sally (7/5): Good -
- Carmen (9/5): Worth it! - Likes- complimentary bikes, mimosas, volcanic eruption viewing, location, location, location!!
Our room did not have a view and the curtain rod fell off the wall. One of room got cookies and one did not. Is it pricey and small but otherwise great.
- Pamela (8/5): - Need better coffee in the morning, usually full of gunk. It’s a National Park so very old rooms with that smell. Walk your bag up a flight. Wonderful nice staff, very helpful.
- Elise (9/5): Superb -
- Christy (7/5): Good -
- Ryan (4/5): good location. poor food and room - Great location - extremely friendly staff Noisy, uncomfortable room. dinner was terrible.
- Crews (8/5): Great base for seeing all the sights at Volcano National Park. - Location was amazing, complimentary coffee in the lobby first thing in the morning, 12:00 pm check out was a huge deal plus for us. Didn’t really dislike anything. It’s an old building and you can see that. My only comment would be that perhaps the carpets be changed out. Ours looked really old and dirty.
