Guest Reviews
- andrea (10/5): - The room was amazing as well as the lobby and restaurant! Very curated.
- Craig (10/5): -
- Caio (10/5): -
- Brian (8/5): A clean modern spot to enjoy artwork exhibits but lacks a sense of home and comfort. - It was very zen and clean and modern. The restaurant was great and offered a super interesting cuisine. Cool art light exhibit in the rock garden The in room bath was super small. It needed to be 2-3 feet wider and longer. There was no space in the hotel to relax or have a cocktail. The lobby felt like a transitional space so it missed the ability to function as a lounge. They made a fire pit which would be great but shut it down at 9pm so with dinner, there was no way to use it.
- simonerdavies (10/5): A magical oasis on a magical island - This place is spectacular. If you like modern Japanese design, luxury, and peace and quiet then this place is for you.
- Reona (10/5): -
- david (10/5): Amazing stay and experience. Food is Michelin star quality! - Amazing experience from start to finish,
food was excellent! Nothing
- Martha (10/5): - Excelent service
- Jai (10/5): Most relaxing stay I had! Beautiful ryokan, good food and exceptional staff - Beautiful ryokan! Exceeded my expectations
- Franck (10/5): - Amazing, authentic, welcoming and charming
- Beatriz (10/5): Foi encantador! - Quarto enorme e confortável, comida e serviço maravilhosos.
- Agnes Tak Wei (9/5): -
- Peter (8/5): If you are willing to pamper yourself, this property has a wonderful food and Japanese style bath. You can relax. - Very beautiful property and the facilities were excellent. Quite expensive.
- Sophie (10/5): Most amazing experience of Japanese hospitality - Personally I’m not a breakfast person .. so not the best person to ask
- Andrea (10/5): -
- Su Ping (10/5): Perfect place to stay after a full day of enjoying the art and architecture on the island - Beautifully designed, and a wonderful way to spend a couple of nights on Naoshima. Thoughtful and courteous staff, with very helpful ryokan shuttle buses picking us up from the ferry and dropping us off at museums. The evening sushi and kaiseki meals were also extraordinarily good. Very charming, comfortable and spacious suites. Nothing! I loved our stay
- Philip (8/5): Unforgettable design and overall experience, only let down by the food. - A truly incredible place to stay. Superb design in every last detail. A real joy to behold and experience. The elaborate Kaiseki meal was delightfully presented but almost all the dishes failed to impress or delight in taste/flavour. The best courses of the many were the sashimi and the wagyu beef both of which were amazing. Ideally, these would be the basics but they ended up being the saving grace. Similarly, we took the wine and sake tasting menu to accompany the dinner. Two of the three sakes were superb. But neither of the two wines were good enough to qualify for inclusion for a tasting menu of this price or ambition in my humble opinion.
- David (10/5): Fantastic experience at a truly unique hotel on a magical island - Unique in every way
- Martinez De Zorzi (10/5): -
- Darice (10/5): -
- Charby (10/5): Out of time. - Everything was wonderful ! The staff, the meals and also the room. What a surprise ! Of course, I was expecting something fantastic but the reality was truly spectacular. Thank you, all of you ! Nothing.
- Lisitsa (10/5): -
- John (10/5): - Beautiful design throughout the hotel, spectacular bathroom with view of a garden. Cool art everywhere. Attentive and thoughtful staff. Dinner and breakfast were deserving of a Michelin star. Little stain on carpet in room.
- TOSHIYA (9/5): -
- Danah (10/5): - Cozy, relaxing and comforting place with great hospitality. The architect is artistry, loved the private mood of the room, inroom spa was great with full of natural hinoki scent. Food was also great, Japanese kaiseki dinner was like michelin star dinner and morning breakfast was so delicious as well. Location is also good to visit Honmura region, you can look around Art House Projects and New Museum by walk. Strongly recommended!
- William Britt (10/5): -
- Vanessa (10/5): -
- William Britt (10/5): - Un posto magico!
- William Britt (10/5): -
- Ramón (10/5): It doesn't get better than this - Every single thing. It has been one of my best experiences at a hotel/ryokan, the facilities themselves are incredible, everything feels really well taken care of, the staff was incredible, all of them always kind and attentive to our needs.
- Marcelo Felipe Kheirallah (7/5): -
- Carla (10/5): Cultural experience - Setting - culture -food - hot bath ready when you arrive - Japanese clothes they give you You need to know you will sleep on the floor in separate beds .
- Bradley (10/5): A wonderful experience - A very special place - traditional but luxurious Japanese style rooms, excellent dining, and great staff. Also was located in the cool part of the island. Wasn’t cheap but was worth it. Nothing
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexander (8/5): Very good - Lovely, lovely rooms….. Didn’t have sea views! Haha….
- Olga (1/5): Thoughtless Desighn nonsense - The good and stuff The first thing that stands out is the room: The bed is placed right at the entrance door, on floor level, hard and smelling strongly of sweaty feet—just like the wardrobes next to it. You lie there, staring directly at your luggage, which you can’t even cover up. When I’m on vacation, I want to see something beautiful, not my suitcases! Then, when you get up, you first have to get yourself off the floor and then go down some steps just to reach the toilet. That really makes you think twice about having another drink just to avoid the whole process. The “living room” is down the steps and features the most uncomfortable couch in the world, right next to a half-bathroom.
Sit on stone and stare on a sink…Whoever designed this clearly had no idea what they were doing.
The chairs on the terrace are so uncomfortable that if you were a smoker, you’d probably quit right away. You can hear the neighbors talking through the walls, and air conditioning units are humming from everywhere—even if you’ve turned everything off.
It’s just thoughtless design nonsense without a single comfortable seating option in the entire hotel! The only things that deserve praise are the fantastic food and the very friendly and attentive staff.
- Summer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Amy (10/5): The 40 hours we spent on the island were great. The town with art installations was a bit of a disappointment. I expec - Lovely space, excellent service, amazing dinner It was too early in the year to see the beautiful views that are potentially there
- Tal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tonie (10/5): Exceeded our expectations a perfect combination of modern cuisine and facilities with old fashioned service and attentio - Everything was exceptional. The attention to detail in the room, service from staff, preparation, presentation and serving of food. Even though it was winter we sat outside next to the firepit after dinner and it was very comfortable. The beds were very comfortable, the private onsen with view out to the woodland beyond was perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The room was spacious and perfectly equipped with everything you might need. Ryokan Roka has managed to combine current cuisine with the type of service that hasn’t been seen in many fine dining restaurants around the world in years. Congratulations. Nothing.
- Anais (10/5): Staff, food, bed, onsen, everything was incredible. I can’t wait to come back! - Gorgeous location
- Jane (7/5): The staff are wonderful and helpful and went out of their way to make my stay memorable - healthy, nutritious and a delightful selection of Japanese pickles, vegetables and fish. Beautifully presented and delicious. As a solo guest paying the same price as a couple, I found the number of bathroom room towels, amenities, and supplies meagre and that they were not replenished daily compared to other hotels I stayed in during my travels in Japan.
While having breakfast, I was asked to complete a questionnaire about how I would like the room cleaned, which confused both me and the staff.
- Thalia (10/5): 10/10!! - the rooms are so lovely & the beds were insanely comfy. the staff make you feel so welcomed nothing to not like about the property
- Karen (9/5): Superb -
- Han (10/5): Authentic charm - Everything about our stay was exceptional! Every moment was a delight, and the staff went above and beyond with their kindness and attentiveness, ensuring that everything ran seamlessly. I truly appreciated how they paid attention to even the smallest details, from personalized service to the thoughtful variation in the menu throughout our stay. Each dish was absolutely divine. The perfect balance of modern comfort and traditional Japanese culture made for an unforgettable experience. I'd love to return and highly recommend to anyone seeking an authentic experience of both worlds! None
- Gary (5/5): Passable - The staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was spacious and great with well-equipped amenities. However, the ryokan dinner was a disappointment. We found a hair on one of the dishes. The staff did apologize and changed it for a new one. Other than that, everything is fine.
- Zhou (10/5): I would definitely recommend and am already looking forward to returning. - Everything about our stay was absolutely lovely. The room was so nice and we enjoyed the 45 degrees Celsius hot rub in our room as well!
All of the food was delicious and made with such care. We will definitely stay again.
Thank you to the staff for their warm welcome! We aren’t as used to the Japanese beds so didn’t sleep so well, but it may have been just our experience!
- Gerry (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (10/5): It was the highlight of our time in Naoshima. Wonderful facilities and great food. The kaiseki was tasty and creative. - The staff is wonderful. Everyone were very kind and helpful. Nothing
- Stephan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Liliana (10/5): Naoshima Ryokan Roka: an amazing place to stay - Ryokan Roka is located on what they call the "Art Island"
Everything was Fabulous. Amazing. Perfect. Gorgeous.
The staff was so helpful and willing to solve any problems or questions.
We were provided with drivers and vans to help us get to the museums and galleries.
Our room was the largest we had in our 6-week trip to Japan.
Unusual and amazing - what a treat!
The food was beyond fantastic... it was Mouthwatering delicious.
We had all come to view art, and it was wonderful to also be surrounded by art throughout the hotel
So, so happy we stayed here. Not a thing
- Kelly (10/5): A divine one night stay at Roka Ryokan, Naoshima. - The whole layout of the ryokan was magnificent. We really enjoyed our room at No 11 as its interior was simply divine. The tatami mattress with the thick fluffy comforter gave us a good night of rest. It’s wonderful to be able to soak in the onsen whenever we would like to do so. What’s even greater is the dual mirror and hand wash sink. No need to wait for each other. Little details like hooks for towels and bath robes were carefully thought through. The patio to look out gave us time to reflect and take in the ambience.
As for the premise, we liked the fire place as it kept us warm in the cold weather. The zen gravel garden was equally attractive.
The staff were very well trained. We particularly liked interacting with Chat (from Sri Lankan) who checked us in /out and gave us our room tour as well as MJ (from the Philippines) who drove us to and fro Miyanoura Port. There was also the female staff who served us our dinner whose name we didn’t get as we were so fascinated by each and every dish. We thanked her for making our dinner experience as memorable. Hmm…the room wasn’t particularly sound proof. There was this couple in Room 12 and the man was singing awfully late till 11 pm. Perhaps he was drunk. He only stopped after my husband banged on the adjoining wall.
- Gavin (10/5): The highlight of my Japan trip and an experience that will stay with me for a long time. - This property is one of the most special places i have ever stayed in. Every area is so well considered with the attention to detail and the materials used extraordinary. The food both nights i stayed were highlights of my whole trip and every single staff member from the moment i arrived couldn’t have been more warm and welcoming. As i was travelling alone - they took the time ask me of i had a preference where i’d like to sit during dinner in case i felt uncomfortable in any way which was so sweet and appreciated. This is a standout 10/10 experience - it’s perfect. Truly.
- Wen (9/5): Superb -

- Maria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anita (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (10/5): Perfect stay; not cheap but worth treating yourself. Room and meals and service were fantastic -
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caroline (9/5): A beautiful replan in a great location. We loved exploring the island on the electric hire bikes - Wonderful staff, great location, beautiful decor Although the set dinner and breakfast were delicious, there was too much food and we felt rather guilty about the waste!
- Javier (9/5): Superb - We had an excellent experience at Roka. Very good service and the food was great. The rooms were awsome
- Virginia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gwendolien (10/5): Perfect stay in Naoshima! - Very friendly staff. already before you arrive you get information and offer to pick you up at the ferry. We had dinner included. The food was extra-ordinary. High end menu with options for wine, sake or juice pairing. Everything was excellent. Minor point : the western breakfast is a bit heavy with too much meat.
- Roland (10/5): Exceptional - Delicious food (breakfast and dinner)
Top equipped rooms
Super friendly and service orientated staff
- Dongho (10/5): Every thing, especially design, color, layout of the room was excellent. - The dinner course was perfect and a pleasure to our eyes and tungs.
- Hollie (10/5): Beautiful design, spacious and classy Ryokans - The attention to detail at Roka made the stay very comfortable and convenient. The rooms are so spacious and gorgeous, of course the private onsen was the highlight. It’s very peaceful and I didn’t hear my neighbours. I’d recommend two nights as it’s the best stay in all of Japan for sure. The staff are all so friendly and helpful.
- Eunjoo (10/5): Exceptional - Such a wonderful place!!
Beautiful architecture and wonderful hospitality!! Kaiseki(dinner) is modern style, honestly we expect a traditional Japanese style kaiseki
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - We had an excellent time. Our room was beautiful and the food was amazing
Super kind and helpful staff who treated us so well.
Our entire stay was relaxing and perfect from start to finish.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Nothing
- Suellen (10/5): Extraordinary experience on Naoshima - Beautiful stay, wonderful experience! It was all perfect.
- Tommaso (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ran (10/5): Outstanding & very pleasant - We loved it!
- Gil (10/5): Exceptional - It is beautiful! Perfect rooms and gardens.
- Gabriele (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stacey (10/5): Beautiful, contemporary Ryokan in rural setting but walkable to all of the sights on the island. - Ryokan Roka is a lovely, contemporary Ryokan an easy walk from the town of Honmaru, where the Art House Project is. The food is wonderful, which is a bonus because it is HARD to find good food on the island. We had a shiatsu massage and loved the hot soak tub in the suite. Excellent staff. Nothing.
- Tess (10/5): Beautiful Modern Ryokan - Roka Ryokan is a must if you plan to stay on Naoshima. My partner and I stayed in the deluxe ryokan in March 2024 which was absolutely beautiful. I would recommend this time of year where it’s not too cold to cycle around the island, however you can open up the doors and have the cool air enter the onsen area.
The dinner included within the room was a highlight of the trip, where the beautifully curated menu showcased some of Japan’s best cuisine. We had a very special time here and will remember it forever!
- Peilin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ana (10/5): Perfection - Everything about the stay was exceptional. The rooms are designed in the most beautiful harmony with nature. The staff really make you feel like home.
- Marion (10/5): Exceptional - All the food was fantastic and of a very high quality. They were able to provide for specific dietary requirements. The room was exquisite and the hotel won an architecture award last year. The staff were helpful and very responsive. Would Iove to stay there again. Location was walking distance to Chichu Museum.
- Katherine (8/5): Very good -
- Fabienne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Geoff (6/5): Overrated and stay elsewehre ..... - The architecture is quite impressive. The food, the stuffy "art" attitude of the team, the location and the cost.
- Vicki (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anissa (9/5): staff are super nice, and they can be communicated in English. The room is cosy. - this is a super nice place to calm down yourself and take a break in live. Very relaxing. Hotel offers shuttle to the ferry terminal and other sightseeing spots. I like the private hot spring no TV,
- Stephan (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent place, perfect to relax after exploring the island. Enjoy a relaxing bath and after a delicious Kaiseki meal with sake pairing enjoy a Japanese Whiskey at the fireplace.
- Penny (9/5): Superb -
- Ashley (10/5): Exceptional - The spa in our room was exceptional
- Nigel (9/5): An extraordinary place to stay - The whole Ryokan experience and the aesthetic of the rooms We loved the food but would have liked greater options - more a la carte
- Cyma (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luke (10/5): Perfect stay in Naoshima - Everything was tasteful, well thought out and the staff very welcoming. The rooms are very well appointed, the bath was excellent. The food was superb - we did both the standard kaiseki and the sushi on separate occasions, and the sushi was incredible.
- Daria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lynn (10/5): Exceptional - Everything Nothing
- Ian (10/5): Perfect stay - Beautiful design. Private and luxury rooms/baths. Great meals. Knowledgeable and attentive staff. This should be a perfect 5 star review from everyone that has stayed here. It’s a new hotel so maybe some of the early reviews were from them working out opening issues. But our stay was perfect.
They provide e-bikes and an on demand shuttle service across the whole island. Location is also very walkable to everywhere if you want to do that. Not applicable
- Vladimir (10/5): Perfect - Perfect place to stay in Naoshima and to enjoy the art and nature. Don’t miss!
