- Cody (10/5): Wonderful accommodation and thoughtful attentive hosts - Guest House Kiyohime is an absolute perfect spot to stop on the Kumano Kodo. My family of 3, including our 3 year old, were so impressed by the hospitality. The food and dining experience was superb and very thoughtful, and the accommodation was clean and comfortable. Nothing
- Julia (8/5): Comfortable start to Kumano Kodo - It was convenient to start of Kumano Kodo trail. Comfortable accommodation. Host very helpful and kind providing me with a delicious sweet
- Terrence (10/5): -
- Miki (10/5): -
- Lusianah (10/5): Nice town house and complete facilities - I didnt know that they could arrange pick up and drop off at takahara rest area which is very fortunate. Zerooo , all are too perfect and they make me stress free after hike.
- Joanna (9/5): Perfect stay at Kiyohime before our hike - The accommodation and service are both impeccable! The Shiba hosts are so hospitable. The meals and the lunch boxes are so carefully made, we really felt so special. It was my birthday and I was gifted a beautiful box of pickled ume. Thank you so much for making our stay unforgettable. Nothing.
- Dephanie (10/5): Exceptional - Our room was actually several rooms, which was a very pleasant surprise. No sharing of facilities, and the place even included a washer/dryer for an additional ¥500! Definitely made use of that, especially after walking the first part of Kumano Kodo. Nothing. It was perfect. There was a resident Huntsman's Spider in our room, but he didn't bother anyone. Might freak out some people though.
- Noor (9/5): Awesome - The dinner was delicious and the owner was very helpful in many ways. Nothing
- Andrew (1/5): Extremely disappointed - We made a booking for a fully self contained two bedroom apartment. Just prior to arrival we were advised via email that this was no longer available and we would now have a ‘private lockable room with shared bathroom facilities in a detached building’ - no further information was given. At that stage we could no longer get accommodation anywhere else as it was cherry blossom season and therefore very busy. We asked what discount would be offered for the change in booking and eventually we were offered ¥2000 cash discount each ($AUD42) for our ¥23,800 ($AUD251). So we were paying more than $AUD200 for a room and then had to share a single bathroom and a single toilet between 8 people.
Accommodation in Japan is expensive however we felt the discount offered was insufficient considering the variation in the booking and what was offered. Eight people sharing one toilet and one shower is difficult and uncomfortable, and certainly very different from what we booked.
This tainted the entire experience and made it difficult to enjoy the meal which was another ¥3300 ($AUD35pp).
Then to top it off we were not given breakfast. We were asked what time we would like breakfast the following morning. We requested 6am. At 6am the house was in darkness - no breakfast was being prepared. We were also advised we would be dropped off at the start of the Kumano Kodo trail after breakfast - we walked the 2.4km to the trail head. However, just as we arrived at the trailhead the owner of the accommodation drove up at great speed and started shouting that we had left without paying for our dinner. Obviously we were unable to pay as no one was there that morning, and we knew they held our credit card details as they had charged them for our room prior to our arrival.
Overall the experience was extremely disappointing and really felt like a total scam. In my opinion they should not advertise a product and then provide something totally different and continue to charge for it.
- S (10/5): Very inviting and comfortable stay with exceptional food. - Yummy breakfast and dinner especially sashimi Nil
- Mia (10/5): I wish I lived here 💛 - The property was spacious and the perfect accommodation for those on the Kumano Kodo. My host provided me with a delicious breakfast, a filling bento box lunch for my hike, and drove me to my starting location for the day. I can not recommend this stay highly enough!!! Nothing to say here ;)
- Po (10/5): The place is very spacious and have a good bath. - Very good location, nice environment, the host is also very nice, and the quality of the food is very delicious. Nothing
- Silke (10/5): Exceptional - We were so lucky to find an accommodation on a very short notice close to Takijiri, the start of the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Trail. We were prepared to walk from the accommodation to the trailhead in the morning (about 30 minutes), but the host offered a ride for us (and the other 3 guests that were staying with him). We stayed in the downstairs apartment and found it to be very clean and spacious. There was a washing machine and dryer which can be very useful for hikers. When we arrived, there was a welcome panel in front of the house with a number to contact - we did and the host arrived right away. He lives in the neighbourhood, less than a minute away. It is also at their house, where he and his wife serve meals to their guests. It was a nice experience to meet the other guests (there were 3) during dinner and breakfast. The meals themselves were beautifully presented and so delicious. We very much appreciate that they went out of their way to offer us meals (dinner, breakfast and lunch box) with less than a day notice. We had a very good time and would not hesitate to stay here again. As we booked only one day before arrival, there was some initial confusion about the apartment's availability and food options (usually, they only offer meals when notified more than one day in advance). This was a bit stressful, but again party due to our late booking. After some back and forth (luckily the host was readily available), it got resolved: We got the downstairs apartment and the hosts even went out of their way to provide meals for us. We were very happy!
- Merideth (10/5): Amazing hospitality and exquisite meals! - The comfortable sleeping and bathing facilities worked out for our group of four friends perfectly. Having a small kitchen and a dining or working table and good spots to discuss our Kumano Kodo plans together was excellent, over a cup of tea or coffee. Loved it
- Alice (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): A superb way to start the Kumano Kodo - Beautiful location, easily accessed by the bus from Kii-Tanabe. We paid for the meal option, to cover dinner, breakfast and a bento box for lunch while hiking, and the food was delicious. Our hosts looked after all our needs, including transportation in the morning a couple of kilometres up the road to Takijiri and the start of our trek on the Kumano Kodo. It was nice sharing meals with other guests who were also hiking the trail. We ended up crossing paths with them along the way.
- Miyon (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were wonderful and the food was amazing and so beautifully presented.
- Jacklyn (10/5): Comfortable and homely feeling staying at Kiyohime guest house, responsible host who is kind and helpful :) - Wonderful clean guest house, very kind and hospitable host and wife who prepared wonderful meals :) will definitely come again! Nothing
- Ira (10/5): 100% - Everything - privacy, beautiful location, property and our hosts - wonderful. N/A
- Niels (10/5): Really nice! - The owners are really kind, the house has everything you need and more and the location is perfect. Nothing. Everything was good.
- Wei-ting (10/5): Thanks Shiba San for a wonderful journey experience. - Guest house Kiyohime is the best guest house I have ever stayed in Japan. The house is clean. The meal is delicious and colorful. The most important thing is their service is outstanding, especially when my dad, 75 yrs old, stuck in shiomi-togego due to the heat stroke, host Shiba San drove the car to pick us up and rescued us. We are so appreciated for his additional effort and time to take care of his guests. We love this place and for sure will be back once a while. Thanks Shiba San. None
- Maria (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay was very comfortable, cozy and lovely. Hiroki and Naoko were very kind and took very good care of us anticipating our needs. We had dinner, breakfast and they prepared a lunch box, all was delicious and prepared with so much love! Thank you so much.
- Maximilian (10/5): Exceptional - Hiroki and his wife have been amazing hosts.
Not only did they offer to pick us up add the station but they also shuttled us to our starting location for the Kumano kodo trip.
They offered us an dinner, breakfast and Bento options which Would definitely recommend you to take. The food was simply amazing and in an traditional tatami room was also a great ambience. 10/10 star's
The guesthouse has a lot of small but great details which provide you with much added comfort. There was cold drinks in the fridge, a flower arrangement in the bathroom and lots information material on the Kumano kodo trail.
All in all if you have the option try too book a stay at Kiyohime Nothing to complain about or to improve. Please stay the way you are!
- Lily (10/5): Comfortable, lovely host, great food! - Lovely traditional guest house with all the facilities you could need, including a washer and dryer. Our host was excellent, he was very hospitable and made us the most amazing dinner spread which was very worth the money and a lovely experience. Highly recommend!
- Maya (9/5): Superb - The hosts were very kind and warm and thought about every aspect of my stay. I was going to walk the Kumano Kodo and they even thought of alternate routes as there was a lot of rain. And the food was amazing!
- Bret (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (9/5): Very comfortable and welcoming start to our trek. - - Great location just a short walk from the trail head for the Kumano Kodo
- Hiroki & Naoko were excellent hosts. Very attentive and helpful. They served a delicious dinner and a great packed lunch for the walk. Hiroki also drove us to the trail head the next morning.
- The room and facilities were all very clean and well kept.
- Kira (10/5): Great communication, exceptional hosts and spacious apartment - It was very spacious and quiet. Our host went out of his way to pick us up/ drop us iff at the start of the Kumano Kodo.
His wife made us excellent meals. No complaints.
- Lorène (10/5): A peaceful place, close to Takijiri Oji - I really enjoyed my time in this place. It was very clean and comfortable. You can find everything you need to have a safe, calm and peaceful stay. I had the chance to try dinner/breakfast/lunch box that were absolutely amazing! Hiroki and Naoko are two perfect kind hosts, I truly recommend! Thanks a lot!
- Huang (10/5): Exceptional - good place to live really nice meal
- Lily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jb808 (10/5): Exceptional - What a great place to stay prior to starting the Kumano Kodo trek. Hiroki San is an excellent host. The small touches and thoughtfulness of the house is noticed and we'll received. He is also very kind.
Location is wonderful. A 25 minute walk to the trailhead and a few minutes drive to Lawson's for any last minute stuff.
The house itself is clean, well decorates, has a full kitchen, washing machine, beer in the fridge, and even umeboshi to try.
We'd recommend to anyone looking to relax before the trek. We're really grateful for Hiroki and his hospitality.
- Grant (10/5): Wonderful restful stay only 1.8 km from start of Kumano Kodo. Excellent hosts who are committed to making your stay enj - Two bedrooms Japanese style with futons were spacious and clean. Instructions throughout house were very clear and in English. Laundry facility was very helpful. The hosts were exceptional! They picked us up at Tanabe train station so we didn’t get lost looking for the property. They served a gourmet multi dish dinner. Breakfast was delicious and so was lunch box. Definitely worth the added expense. He coordinated all baggage delivery to our final destination, which worked out perfectly. We even got a ride to the start of our Kumano Kodo journey which was in Takahara since it was so rainy our host recommended we avoid the slippery ascent from Takajiri.
Finally he delivered some items we left behind accidentally to our next overnight accommodation along with some delicious snacks for the journey. We truly appreciate the kindness and hospitality we experienced at Gust House Kiyohime. We were very happy choosing Guest House Kiyohime. One improvement could be drinks like soda and sparkling water for purchase along with the beers offered. Also a small choice of snacks for purchase to eat on the trail since there are no options on once you leave Tanabe.
- Tamsyn (10/5): Exceptional guesthouse and amazing hosts! - The hosts were very lovely people, so kind and welcoming to us. We enjoyed the authentic Japanese feel of the guesthouse, how spacious and tidy it was and how easy it was to find. We got a bus from Tanabe station and got off as instructed at Kiyohime stop. Hiroki greeted us and showed us to the apartment. We had the whole top floor to ourselves with a private entrance.
The food Hiroki & Naoko provided for us was delicious. They invited us in to their home (a couple of houses down) for the evening meal and breakfast, both of which were meticulously prepared and nicely presented, really lovely. They also took the time to explain the food dishes to us. The bento box was the best we have had on our trip so far! Hiroki gave us a lift to the starting point for Kumano Kodo hike the next day and transferred our luggage to the next place.
We recommend Hiroki & Naoko's Place very highly, it exceeded our expectations and was the perfect restful place to stay before the start of the trek.
Thank you both, Hiroki & Naoko. 🙏✨️ There is nothing not to like, it's all amazing. Just book it 😃
- Noor (10/5): We really love the food and the way the wife presents the food. The food is delicious. - The food, the service and the house. Nothing
- Emma (8/5): Very good -
- David (10/5): Don’t miss this experience! - Authentic Japanese accommodation. Very clean and beds were comfortable. Make sure you include dinner and breakfast in your stay. The food was superb and the host took real pride in preparing it for us. The take away lunch was just what we needed on the hike. We loved the whole experience! Nothing, it was great
- Lakhvinder (10/5): Out of the ordinary! - The host Hiroki and his beautiful wife Naoko are generous, kind and very warmth. They did everything to make our experience incredible. They were most keen to share their homeland, with is. The dinner, breakfast and bento lunch was exceedingly amazing. Can't ask for more. Will return of course very soon! All perfect

- Ines (10/5): Exceptional - This was the perfect start to our Kumano Kodo hike, Hiroki was such a wonderful host and the guest house is exactly what we needed. The meals are excellent (authentic and delicious) and the luggage transfer service worked perfectly. Hiroki even gave us a lift from the bus when we arrived and took us to the beginning of the trail the next day. Overall a great place and we would definitely go back.
- Lynette (10/5): All excellent - So welcoming and host picked us from bus stop and then took to Takijiri .
Fabulous food and gracious host but also gave us plenty of space.
- Kerrissa (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was incredibly helpful!! He was able to accommodate our group last minute. He offered to picked us up at the bus stop and also drop us off at the trail head the next morning. He and his wife were also able to accommodate a vegan meal for one of our members. He also helped us with forwarding our bags.
10/10 stars and would absolutely stay again! Everything was wonderful!
- Dora (8/5): Great guesthouse to stay over before your kumano hike. - It is very spacious with a fully equipped kitchen. The host picked us up in front of the nearest bus stop Kiyohime and also sent us off to the start point of KUMANO Kodo. He is so nice that he also drove us to a ATM on the road. There are a lot of brochures and the Kumano Kodo stamp books available in the living room. The blanket was a bit short if you are 180+. Since we came during winter, it matters quite a lot.
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wenjuan (10/5): Exceptional - The house is very cozy and tidy, near KUMANO kodo starting point, only 25m. walk to takajiri oji. There is no any supermarket and restaurant around, it’s better to bring some foods along with you.
- Yuan (10/5): Convenient and cozy - The guest house is warm and cozy, especially on a cold winter day. I didn’t meet the host due to my late arrival, but I communicate with the host and got the support from the host (always replied quickly) and made me feel home. The house is well-equipped, both wifi, hot water and heat is provided. My stay was arranged on the second floor, and I have to say the private room is spacious and I have enough space to walk around. The guest house also has luggage delivery service which make the Kumano Kodo trip easier for me.
Really appreciate the warm and friendly hosting!
- Jamal (9/5): Superb - Very spacious and comfortable - the dinner, breakfast and lunch to go were all brilliant. Hiroki picked us up from the station when we arrived and dropped us at the Kumano Kodo start point after breakfast in the morning
- Nao (10/5): Neat place with welcoming host - The host was very welcoming and warm-hearted. The place was very clean and spacious to rest and prepare for the trail. I stayed in the room upstairs with private bathroom with large bathtub, which I loved. The location was close enough to the popular starting point of the Kumano Kodo trail, Takijiri-Oji, but the thoughtful host drove me and the other guest to the starting point. Nothing in particular.
- Emily (10/5): A comfortable place to stay before the start of the Kumano Kodo - Property was clean, very spacious and quiet. The hosts were exceptionally good at communicating with us about the property and our stay. They even provided travel information for us to read about the Kumano Kodo. We stayed here the night before the start of our hike.
- Samuel (10/5): Would recommend to anyone and everyone - Hiroki met us off the bus and drove us to his home which is in an amazing location to start the Kumano Kodo. The food was exceptional, added extras like beer and sake in the fridge for additional purchase as well as a bento for the road. Washing facilities were helpful, spotlessly clean and really couldn’t have done more for us including contacting the next accommodation for us and sorting luggage delivery. He is a real life angel
- Akos (10/5): Exceptional - Super nice place, I loved it. You can easily start the Kumano Kodo from there. The owner is a great guy. He offered to pick me up from Tanabe station and gave me a ride to a supermarket so I could get vegan food. Thanks again! 🙏
I would def stay there again.

The owner was also kind to drive me to the trailhead in the morning. Amazing stay with wonderful hosts in the heart of nature. Thank you!
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional - What a fantastic stay! Our hosts exceeded our expectations. The meals our hosts provided were excellent. There aren’t any restaurants close by, unless you have a car, so have the host arrange the meals. Excellent meals during our stay. Very comfortable apartment with great amenities. Amazing hosts. Highly recommended. Absolutely perfect.

- Youakim (10/5): Exceptional - The property is a perfect starting location if you plan to do the kumano Kodo. 25 minute flat walk to Takajiri-oji. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be organised at a reasonable price. Drinks and alcohol can also be arranged. Both days of my stay the owner offered to take me to the local convenience store, which is about 3km away. The owner also helped me a couple times and checked that everything was alright.
- Arjan (10/5): Awesome! - The host prepared 3 fantastic meals for us, dinner, breakfast and bento box for our trip on the Kumano Kodo! All very fresh ingredients and made with a lot of love 💕 Nothing
