Guest Reviews
- Rosemary (8/5): Just what I wanted, perfect for my 3 night stay - Beautiful views, every comfort provided, perfect location for planned visit to Penguin, a lot of thought put into the furnishings and kitchen equipment
- Russell (8/5): An excellent stay with beautiful water views and access to waterfront walking paths. - Location
Views
Design ensures minimal noise from other guest rooms
Fresh air flow
Heating Cushions needed for couch so the lower back is supported. The single lounge chair needs a higher back for neck & head support. These small things would make a difference to comfort levels. A few small bowls for nibbles would also be a good idea in the kitchen.
- Elizabeth (9/5): - Off street parking, close to everything, very comfortable bed.
- Allison (7/5): - Size of the room. Cleanliness. Finding where to park. Parking area needs upgrading
- Ferry (9/5): - great location
- Steven (10/5): Relaxing, wish I could’ve stayed longer - Clean, tidy, I thought the location was good, 5 minute walk to shops, kids playground Nothing to dislike
- Zoltan (9/5): - Near the centre and the shoreline. Train noise.
- Catherine (10/5): Modern conveniences in a gorgeous relaxing town - Empty Nest was a gorgeous small apartment building (only 4 units) conveniently located within a short walk of Penguin main street shops and cafes, Penguin beach, Penguin creek and Hiscutt park. This was especially helpful as most of the parking in Penguin has strict time limits. The building has its own parking lot with ample parking for guests, as well as street parking close by on Crescent Street.
The host Anna was friendly and helpful, and gave clear instructions for where to collect keys, and also checked in during our stay as to whether we needed anything e.g. clean towels etc.
The apartment itself was very modern, clean and had all the essentials. It used to be an art gallery and still has beautiful local artworks on the walls. We stayed in unit 4 which is disability access friendly and has a beautiful view of the river. We enjoyed waking up to watch the birds outside our windows.
The bed was large and very comfortable, and had ample power points for phone charges, and whatever else you may need bedside. The TV had connections to multiple streaming services, and there was a 3 seater couch and 2 comfortable chairs to sit in for viewing. The bathroom was spacious with large vanity, drawers for storage and the shower had both a rain-shower head and hose head options. The kitchen was fully equipped with all the utensils and cookware you need to make meals at home, and there was options for both bench seating and a four seat round dining table.
We also had access to a laundry on site with 2 washing machines, 2 dryers and washing detergent. Outside the building there are tables and chairs in the front, as well as around the side on the verandah area.
Penguin is a cute little town, with lots of options for dining, shopping and a fantastic market on Sundays, as well as being within 20 minutes drive of Devonport, Ulverstone, and Burnie. A note for light sleepers that the freight trains do pass nearby once or twice a night, so just pack some earplugs for the late night/early morning horn.
- David (8/5): We enjoyed our stay in Penguin before heading to Launceston . - we were pleased with the space the unit offered and the proximity to the town hub. Showers were exceptional.! As we were on a busy corner the traffic flow did concern us initially ,not to mention the train track was right outside our front window Certainly the train track was a surprise!
The staircase from the parking lot posed a problem for my wife, but we decided to park over the road in the disabled park which minimised the need to go down the staircase to the parking lot.
- Alasha (10/5): - Absolutely beautiful spot ,
- Margaret (8/5): - The location was good the room had the best view. We will recommend this property to friends if the ever come to penguin. Nothing all was great.
- Andrew (9/5): Enjoyable comfotable stay. - Excellent well equiped kitchen area with glass stovetop, utensils, microwave cooker, separate meal table with two chairs, separate low coffee table with two chairs, large wall mounted TV with widely adjustable viewing angle hinge and wifi access. Excellent queen bed. Two bedside tables each with two drawers, a large bathroom with no step open shower area. Ramp and stairs access at front where there is temporary public parking nearby across the street and open air on-site parking adjacent to the building down one flight of stairs. All managed comfortably and very clean. Good shared laundry with clothes dryer and outdoor clothes line. Easy flat walk to Penguin Beach, shops, pubs, and restaurants. Small kitchen bar fridge froze our soy milk and apples, and natural rose hip tea we made and placed in the fridge overnight. We picked numerous small rose hip fruits from trees growing nearby beside a public road.
- Weinert (8/5): - lovely presented, great location pillows too soft
- Annie (10/5): Fantastic -
- Maree (9/5): -
- Sherry (10/5): I would stay again. The cars and trains do not bother you at night. It is quiet. - The view was beautiful looking at the ocean and beach. The room was big and very clean. Close to town. On a busy road and train tracks in front.
- Andrew (10/5): - The layout of the room. Great sea view and easy off street parking. Very comfortable bed & a huge bath room with a double walk in shower. Short walk to shops. All good
- philpott (7/5): Okay, for one night. - Comfy bed
Large room
Clean Bit weird, right on road.
- Ruth (10/5): Penguin Perfection - Location, easy walk over the road to the beach and to shops including Penguin Beer Co who have live music on some Sunday's. Lovely undercover outdoor area to sit and read or talk with friends.
- Frances (10/5): - Located just on the edge of town overlooking the ocean is this cute studio apartment which is 1 of 4. Everything was clean and well kept and easily accessible for those with mobility issues. Penguin is a charming little coastal town with a great bakery and a number of cafes.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Beautifully decorated and comfortable room, especially loved being able to sit in the thoughtfully positioned chairs and watch the platypus play in the stream outside our window
- Mark (10/5): -
- Entertainment (10/5): - Friendliness behaviour and location I do like e everything. There us nothing I didn't like
- Karen (10/5): - This location was ideal staying close to family.
It was clean ,comfy and just what we needed There was nothing to complain about
- Danielle (6/5): It was a nice stay. I think the advertising should be a bit more descriptive - Private
Tidy
Nice unit Being on a walking stick made it incredibly difficult to get bags in and out of the facility. There are either stairs or a busy intersection to cross. We booked in for sea views. We were facing a creek and houses opposite
- Sylvia (8/5): -
- Suzanne (10/5): -
- Rick (10/5): -
- Greta (9/5): - The property is well located, and there are many car parks available nearby. The property is spotless clean and nicely furnished.
- michele (8/5): - Comfortable, spacious, clean accommodation with lovely ocean vista. Room was located only metres from a busy intersection in between which was a train track!
Due to location privacy blinds needed to be down all the time which diminished the coastal water view.
Maybe not an ideal location if you want a visually relaxing stay.
- Helen (10/5): -
- Therese (8/5): - . .
- William (10/5): -
- Neil (9/5): Enjoyed our stay apart from traffic noise - Everything Too close to the road and railway
- Darren (10/5): -
- Meryl (7/5): -
- See (7/5): -
- Elizabeth (8/5): A lovely apartment in beautiful Penguin - Lovely location with views out to sea from one apartment and a glimpse of a platypus from the other.
- Fiona (10/5): - I love this place, stayed two times now, I get the front corner room. I can say, I wish I could live there 😊 I loved everything
- Pam (9/5): - Great sea front location and handy to town.
- Laura (10/5): -
- John G05 (9/5): -
- Leona (9/5): -
- Kristy (10/5): - Great stay! Loved it! Would 100000% stay again!! Loud trains, but not often at all.
- Cassandra (10/5): -
- Dennis (10/5): - Modern and the view It was all good
- Forster (10/5): Enjoyed our stay very much. - Very pretty location. Bed was beautifully comfortable. When there was a plumbing issue it was dealt with that day. A larger doona on the bed may have been better.
- Vanessa (10/5): Just wow, roomy and comfy - the shower was fantastic! - Fantastic facilities, walking distance to shops & restaurants Freight trains occasionally go past, but not often
- Russell (9/5): Excellent facilities for disabled guests within a warm unit. - Very warm, excellent accessibility for disabled, best we’ve used in Tassie. Great views, all of the equipment needed in the kitchen area. Good towels and bedding. Great supply of quality coat hangers. Sun coming in warmed the unit as well as the heat pump heating, great use of solar energy for the winter. We could not hear other guests in their units; that’s a rare treat! Couch wasn’t comfortable unless sitting for a short time, lacked neck and head support as did the single chair.
- Tracy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joseph (10/5): Exceptional - Super clean and tidy. Very comfortable. Excellent staff. Amazing place..
- Mary (8/5): Very pleasant, except for sulphur smell coming from the creek outside. Keep windows closed. - Unpleasant sulphur smell. Its a naturally occuring smell from the creek outside the window.
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jennifer (8/5): Pleasant spacious room, lovely renovations and a comfy bed! - Very spacious apartment, freshly and tastefully renovated. Very comfortable mattress but oddly, no top sheet, only a doona on top. Check in/out was easy and convenient with clear, timely communication. The expansive front windows provide a lovely sea view but make the room very light all night, even with the blinds down, due to outside lights and morning sun. You have to have the blinds down also for privacy as the room is on a busy street corner. Parking was not ideal. Overall I appreciated the decor, cleanliness, space and comfy bed but unfortunately didn’t sleep well because of the windows/light.
- Lynne (8/5): Very comfortable with a touch of luxury. Loved Penguin and well worth stopping g - Beautifully appointed and spacious with great bed and bathroom. Views of the beach and sunrise was incredible. Location between two roads and railtrack wasnt great. Very hard to get room dark with street lights beaming into the room.
- Brad (9/5): This was perfect for our overnight stay and would also have been great for a few days. - Very clean, modern, well appointed and great open plan space. Walking distance to shops and restaurants.
- Joanne (9/5): Superb -
- Valerie (9/5): Modern, well equipped, and spacious. - Very clean and modern and roomy. Great location. Anna was very helpful and welcoming.
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tania (9/5): The studio is the best and cleanest we have stayed in, during our 2 months in Tasmania. Great lication. Beautiful views. - Extremely clean and consumables/ furnishings were good quality and tasteful. No exhaust fan in kitchen area
- Christine (9/5): I loved staying here. It had everything I needed in a lovely setting and the owners were accessible - I loved the area the property was in and the close proximity to the town within being in the hustle and bustle of the town. The room was cosy but had everything I needed. About my only complaint was I found the 'lounge' chairs uncomfortable. Car parking could have been better.
- Carl (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, very comfy.
- Susan (8/5): Very good - The studio was tastefully decorated with state of the art amenities. The apartment is on the corner of a busy intersection. You could hear traffic.
- Anderson (10/5): Everything was just beautiful -
- Darren (9/5): Superb -
- Kaz (8/5): Very good -
- Jackie (10/5): Beautiful and clean units in a great location -
- Tracy (10/5): Amazing location. Modern and very clean. -
- Megan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (10/5): I can't waot for the chance to stay there again. - The apartment was wonderful and the view was amazing!
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional - The location is brilliant. There is on-site parking. The bathroom is spacious and modern. The building is secure. The apartment is well appointed and the kitchen has everything needed for a longer stay. The beds are very comfortable.
- Stefanie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jon (9/5): Cosy comfortable beach front nest - Great local info, comfortable beds, and gorgeous luxury bathroom. So central. Light and noise at night does creep in and impact a restful sleep.
- Ashley (9/5): Superb -
- Fiona (9/5): Highly recommended accommodation. - We rented apartments 1 & 2 for three nights in December 2024. Both apartments are stylish, well-equipped and have heat pumps/air-con and very comfortable electrically adjustable beds. Apartment 1 has an accessible shower and toilet. Large non-opening glass windows give lovely views of the Bass Straight. Anna is a lovely host who is quick to respond and very helpful. There is a train line that runs close to the apartments and the warning bells are fairly noisy but it's only once or twice a day and sometimes at around midnight - not a major issue.
- Holly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Susan (8/5): Lovely beach view. Location acceptable. - The view, location to beach. Appreciated the double glazed windows that kept traffic noise to a minimum.
Binoculars were a great idea to watch boats and ferries sail by. Closeness to a complicated road intersection. But, saying that, I thought repurposing an old shop was brilliant and done well. No windows that opened were understandable, but the room gets stuffy with the sun beating in on full windows. Air conditioning helps.
Two keys would have been more handy.
- Dianne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (10/5): Spacious and comfortable apartment right next to the shore. - Spacious, well furnished, very comfortable bed, large bathroom, excellent shower. We had the sea view which was stunning. Penguin is a lovely small town. Nothing, it was all very good!
- Julie (10/5): Perfect loacation for a break in Penguin - Nice location near town and beach
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Megan (8/5): Very good - Off street parking, ocean views
- C (8/5): A nice room. - Great room, modern and clean.
Would stay there again. There no reception. Contact is via email/text.
Wasn't clear where parking was at start - looked like belonged to adjacent 'business' - no signage.
Noticed during stay previous occupier of room had covered smoke alarm with plastic - couldn't get hold property owner that night to check if we should remove or there for a reason. Owner subsequently contacted us and was very apologetic and going to sort. Happy with their response to issue and confident they will be very proactive in checking this in the future.

- Lorna (10/5): Beautiful accomodation, super clean with a stunning view! - The property was in a good location and was so beautifully presented. Extremely clean and the bed was soooo good! And the view is breathtaking! The train woke me the first night, I forgot how close the train line was, but I didn’t hear it the second night!
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Dianne (10/5): Absolutely amazing is all I can say ❤️ - It was an awesome place to stay. It was close to everything. It was exceptionally clean, the view from the big windows is amazing. The only thing we didn’t like is that we couldn’t stay longer 😞
