Guest Reviews
- Sansana (9/5): Love the owner inspiration - Cares in every details Food

- Ting Yu (10/5): We had a wonderful family holiday — it’s the perfect destination for families, friends, or even a relaxing solo escape. - We went on a family holiday and it’s truly a wonderful destination — perfect for families and friends, or even if you simply want to enjoy some peaceful “me time.” The food, wine, and music were all fantastic. The staff and duty manager were friendly, attentive, and professional. The surrounding area also offers stunning natural scenery for everyone to enjoy. You need to have own transportation to reach the destination.
- Christine (5/5): - Literie confortable.
- John (10/5): - Wonderful staff, excellent property, and top notch food.
- Martin (10/5): Excellent hotel, location, food and service. A very special place to stay - Staff were all great and provided excellent service. Very limited english language skills it seems, but we were able to communicate without any problems. The location and view from the guest rooms was wonderful. The remote location of the hotel might make it less convenient if you don’t have your own vehicle. Rooms were very clean and well stocked. The dinner was exceptional. The breakfast was also very good with a nice mix of japanese and western items. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Due to the price, we stayed just one night. If the price were lower we would have considered staying longer.
- Robert (10/5): The best hotel we stayed in Japan and a highlight of our stay! Thank you, Shelter Garden! - We had an amazing stay at Shelter Garden. It is a beautiful hotel in an idyllic setting with the view of the river and the tree-lined hills all around. The staff are amazing! From our arrival they were so attentive and welcoming and throughout our stay, despite language differences, we were able to communicate very well and they gave local tips. The food and drinks here are so good so it's worth booking dinner. The hotel is a little way out of Nikko town but the staff picked us up when we arrived at Tobu Nikko station. They also did a shuttle service every day, dropping us off in town and picking us up again. The best hotel we stayed in Japan and a highlight of our stay! Thank you, Shelter Garden!
- Vilma (10/5): -
- Adam (10/5): We loved our stay.we were made to feel extremely welcome - Very nice rooms and the staff were extremely helpful
- Talitha (8/5): Ok!
- Sirilak (9/5): Nice Staffs - Staff Services Hotel Room View (River wiith no water)
- Remer (10/5): The ideal stay in Nikko - Amazing hotel in an ideal setting viewing the forest in Nikko. The food and the service were exceptional. Every detail for the room and all amenities were perfect. A 5 Star Hotel It was far from the center and the shuttle service a bit restrictive.
- Adrien (8/5): -
- Jackie (10/5): We had an amazing stay here and really feel the hotel was a unique and fantastic experience. - The breakfast was amazing! Delicious and plentiful! The view from our room was breath-taking. Our dinners (we treated ourselves to two) were exceptional and amazing. The second evening the chef changed up some selections for us which was very thoughtful. We also enjoyed the happy hour and playing some gamees together before dinner. Not a dislike - just a suggestion - it would be helpful if the front desk had some information about sights and recommendations in the local area.
- Casey (10/5): -
- Omri (9/5): Two nights in Nikko - The design of the hotel and rooms was very cool, all made out of reclaimed wood - very unique.
The staff were very helpful and nice, albeit over the top.
There were also shuttles between the train station and the hotel which was very convenient.
The view from the room was amazing as well. The dinner was a little bit lacking in my opinion. It's not that it was not tasty, but I felt it was too fancy and trying too hard for the location (rustic Nikko).
After walking and hiking all day, I would much rather have something more hearty and rustic.

- Tracy (10/5): Exceptional Stay - A True Hidden Gem in Nikko - From the moment we arrived at The Shelter Garden, we were greeted with genuine smiles and outstanding hospitality. Check-in was seamless and made extra special with a refreshing welcome drink in the dining hall with breathtaking views.
We were traveling as a family of five and stayed for three nights in two beautifully appointed rooms on the 3rd floor, each overlooking the river. The views were absolutely stunning! The rooms were gorgeously decorated, thoughtfully designed, and stocked with every amenity a traveler could need, plus complimentary tea, coffee, and water. The beds were exceptionally comfortable.
A huge shout-out to Tomo, the manager, and the entire team. Every single staff member was warm, attentive, and eager to make our stay perfect. Their service was honestly the best we have ever experienced.
We opted for the meal plan with both breakfast and dinner, and it was worth every moment. The multi-course dinners were extraordinary, beautifully prepared, flavorful, and among the best dining experiences we’ve had anywhere. Breakfast each morning was equally delightful and set the tone for our days of exploring Nikko.
In the evenings, we also loved the live DJ — such a fun and unexpected touch! We thoroughly enjoyed picking songs to request and listening as he created a warm, lively atmosphere that made each night feel special.
Every detail of our stay exceeded expectations. The Shelter Garden is a rare find - elegant, welcoming, and truly unforgettable. We left with full hearts and can’t wait to return. Highly, highly recommend!
- shuo (5/5): Remote location, hidden charge, not worth the price - In the nature , back yard can see waterfall The location is very remote to everything deep in the Forest , you need to walk 45min from train station/ even taking a bus from nearest bus station it takes 36min to walk to hotel. Expensive taxi is the only option
Also the check out time is 10:00, if you check out later than 10:00, a fine of 5500 yen will be charged
The room AC makes lots of noises and light cannot be turned off.
There are many better options around train station or along the way, and less expensive
- Enrico (10/5): Hotel bellissimo, di charme! Staff assolutamente gentile e disponibile! Proprietario istrionico: disegner e DJ assolutam - Tutto eccellente!
- Greg (10/5): -
- mahiro (10/5): -
- Johanna (7/5): Basically a two star hotel with large windows and a back patio the manager at motel 6 would be fired for - Lovely lovely people Feels like being mean to a puppy because the people are so nice but when you arrive you think you’ve been conned and reading the designer booklet in the room makes you think everyone is trying to maintain that this is the height of luxury just because the designer believes shredded plywood and several foot high weeds pushing through the messy and bleak concrete back slab Is akin to the medieval structures he visited in Italy. No, shredded plywood that any Home Depot customer would laugh off the shelf framing a bathroom mirror or the pieces of ‘reclaimed’ and chipped scraps flooring designed to squeak as you walk across does not pay homage to Medici villas- it is uncomfortable and very cheap. Just one example I wish someone had alerted us to. Nikko is stunning but if you walk up the road even a short distance from this hotel signs tell you that you are trespassing and will be fined one million yen. The waterfall view is stunning from the back but if you want to enjoy it bring your own chair- there are only a few stumps on the concrete slab and a path runs just a few feet into the weeds. No amenities and you’re basically stranded here unless you have a car. The staff were lovely and gracious but it is far from a luxury hotel.
- Natan (10/5): -
- Henriette (10/5): Flot natur. Værelse med fantastisk udsigt og indretning. - Fantastik sted midt i naturen med flot udsigt over skov og vandfald. . Snuk og original bæredygtig indretning. Meget opmærksomt personale. Lækker mad. Intet. Virkede lidt malplaceret.
- Shenfen (9/5): Great place for a family retreat - The shuttle service was excellent since we didn't rent a car. Aisaki was the staff member that pick us up at the Nikko Tobu station and drop us off back to the station also. He was excellent!!! We enjoyed everything at the hotel. Booked with breakfast and dinner for one night. A quiet retreat for my family and friends with European decor and meals. We enjoyed the stay very much. Nothing
- Janne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Karen (9/5): Great Place to Relax and Explore Nikko - The Atmosphere, Food.and Surroundings were wonderful!
- David (10/5): Highlight of our Japan trip and would love to return in the future - Beautiful new rooms decorated tastefully, comfortable beds, great views from every room, delicious and varied breakfast each morning, incredibly helpful and attentive staff, fun/hip vibe in main hotel space We liked everything
- Graham (6/5): A novelty place of hospitality. - The place is very quiet, and a true getaway from everything if that is what one is looking for. It is a novelty to stay in this property. It is an all in one facility and there was a lot of effort put into putting it together. Location was terrible if one does not drive and neither speaks Japanese. The location is difficult to walk back to for seniors, and the taxi service in Nikko is still the phone and wireless radio system from yesteryears. GO app and Uber did not work so it was difficult to get around and limits our options getting around Nikko and we missed seeing a lot of things. This place is only good for those who drives or are fluent in Japanese.
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional - My family and I had a truly wonderful stay at Shelter Garden Nikko. We were traveling with a toddler, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome and comfortable throughout our stay. Their warmth and attentiveness made a big difference for us.
The rooms were spacious, impeccably clean, and offered a beautiful view to wake up to each morning. One of the highlights was the duvet – incredibly light, fluffy, and cozy – it genuinely felt like sleeping in a cloud. We all slept soundly each of the four nights we stayed.
Breakfast was another standout. Each morning offered something new and delicious, with a thoughtful variety that kept things exciting and satisfying.
We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again – highly recommended for families and anyone looking for a relaxing, memorable experience in Nikko.
- Choong (10/5): Exceptional -

- Bookingbewertung21 (10/5): Luxury Boutique Recluse with fantastic dinner - One should give a „11“! Located about 25 Minutes by foot in the hills across the shrines overlooking inari River, absolutely quiet. A Shuttle picks up and drops off (do Not Let the rather harsh Tone of the Emails concerning early checkin (extra cost) Irritate you - that is probably die to the poor English); if you Are staying for more than one Night, they ask you Several times when and how they could Transport you to town etc. Recommend at least two Nights so you can enjoy the Room, the food, the Drinks, the music, the atmosphere.
Rooms very spacious; the huge Window is fantastic (and Not cold surprisingly, so Sitting in Front sipping Tea or freshly brewed coffee is a treat Even when cold outside). Free bathtub plus shower (separate). Very stylish and comfortable. Huge bed, rather soft (by japanese standards). The decoration addresses European style luxury travellers, but obviously the japanese guests appreciate it, too. Two floors of rooms.
The Lobby downstairs is also the dining Room. Free sparkling wine (very good!) and drinks from 5-6. during dinner, they Play music/videos to the guests‘ wishes.
A absolute marvel is the food- do Not know where they found this Cook. Mixture of japanese and french Cuisine at its best. Very Tasty, very elegant Concept of five or six courses; breakfast on a tray with all you could ask for. The Bread (Three different kinds to three courses at Dinner, two different kinds for breakfast and no repetition) is superb and of the finest Kind! Strongly recommend to opt for the breakfast and dinner included plan! (Especially since all other options are in town).
The interior speaks of the owner - a marketing Specialist who has a Vision.
Very remarkable is the - abundant- staff. Extremely Super Polite (Even by japanese standards)and attentive (e.g. dried and cleaned our Shoes as a Service after we had taken a hike into the Woods during rain), very sweet and engaged. English is little present but the kindness makes up for that completely. The exterior is surprisingly Not much taken Care of. The terrace would benefit from deckchairs, wooden elements (as in the House), tables etc. - maybe a foot onsen?
We walked for two hours up along the road, then passage through the Woods - very Lovely and partly great for jogging, too - maybe out up some explanation for that?
And please make the Reservation page for the shuttle in English (or offer to Fill in for non-japanese guests).
A Sauna would be the final touch ;)
All of this is Minor and just an offer for additional comfort - the stay there was exquisite. Thank you all!
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - This is not just a hotel, It's an experience. Drinks at check-in while everything was explained in detail. All of the staff were exceptional. The owner/designer introduced himself during happy hour. His meticulous eye for detail shows throughout. His use of local recycled timber in the building is beautiful. The rooms are spacious with the wow factor. Large glass window overlooks the river/mountains Then there's the all the little extra's touches in the room. Only wish he would sell the amazing bath salts he designed. Bed and linen are so comfortable too. We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel. Food was fantastic. All in all a very nice relaxing place to stay.
- Maria (10/5): Wonderful dinner and breakfast, definitely worth it! And the staff is so lovely and helpful - Beautiful hotel
- Pracha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bonnie (10/5): Serene restful stay in a place out of a dream - I selected this place because I read other reviews about the eclectic unique nature of the hotel and atmosphere. I wasn’t disappointed, in fact it exceeded my expectations in every way. The moment you arrive and are greeted warmly by the staff and handed a free drink of your choice, sets the tone for a wonderful experience ahead. The room was huge, warm, comfortable and very special in its minute details of architecture. We chose a river view room and I would highly recommend doing so as the massive picture window overlooks the forest and mountains and is simply breathtaking in the morning sunrise. This hotel was designed with careful thought given to every detail in its creation, with the mindset of creating a restful respite from the modern busy world we live in today. It has achieved this goal in my opinion and then some. We had the honour and pleasure of meeting the architect the second day we stayed and had a conversation with him about his wonderful hotel, he is such a joy to speak with. The food was also an absolute delight, huge filling and varied items at breakfast, and sumptuous selections and pairings at dinner. The staff are The best of anywhere we have stayed so far in Japan, and are gracious and smiling all the time. We speak very limited Japanese but this was never a problem so don’t worry about this as a barrier for coming here. We wouldn’t hesitate to come back and I was sorry I had to leave. This hotel, and Nikko is such a special beautiful place everyone should see it once if they can. Thank you shelter garden and staff for allowing me to have such a warm, restful and wonderful stay at your gorgeous hotel, and thank you so much for all your warmth and hospitality. Nothing
- Gavin (9/5): Beautiful location, amazing room’s, perfect service. Will definitely be coming back again. - The atmosphere and the styling of the hotel was exceptional.
The staff were all very friendly and welcoming and the customer service was excellent.
- Sharon (10/5): Unique inspiring quiet mountain retreat with spectacular service and care - The customer service was beyond excellent, the staff were very attentive and caring and accommodating. The hotel is beautifully and thoughtfully designed. the room was spacious, comfortable, gorgeous with massive picture windows. It's out in nature, no wires or buildings or people in sight. The included breakfast, which they adapted to be vegetarian for me, was one of the best and healthiest meals we had in all of our Japan travels. Their dinner options for vegetarians were very sparse...and not healthy. Either pizza or pasta. they did come with a tiny cup of soup and a tiny very delicious green salad. the only dessert available to us were little tubs of old Haagen Daaz ice cream, iced over and grainy from age. Meanwhile, we had to watch gorgeously prepared and presented meals being served to all the non-vegetarians around us. Including a spectacular dessert that we could have eaten but we were told it was only for the meat meal. We went into town for our dinner the next night. Don't let this keep you from going though. it was a wonderful place and wonderful stay. Just if you are vegetarian, plan to eat dinner elsewhere. Plenty of yuba restaurants in town (but do always check because there is hidden "pork oil" in many things.)
- Juanita (10/5): Restful luxurious stay - spacious rooms, high quality fit out, attention to detail, amazing food for the set dinner and the staff are super helpful a long way from town, best to have a car
- Summit.wolf (10/5): Exceptional - I stayed two nights in this amazing hotel and enjoyed every single bit of it
Service: The staff was absolutely amazing, very attentive without being intrusive, absolutely charming, very knowledgeable of activities around Nikko, they engaged in conversation and we're super nice. I can't find the names of the staff, but I want to thank the Metre for that amazing whisky.
The hotel: Absolutely beautiful, great design concept, the lounge is amazing the rooms too, spotless, spacious, lots of light, very well decorated. The bed and pillows were so nice and comfortable, the best in my month in Japan.
Food: A delight to the senses all the dishes at dinner were exquisite, great combination of flavors, textures, aromas, and perfect presentation. Breakfast was great too. There's also free cocktails and drinks and champagne for breakfast if you're into that.
As a bonus during dinner time there's a DJ and you can request music.
Location: It's a bit far from Nikko Tobu station and downtown Nikko but they have a shuttle bus service so don't worry about it. A taxi from Tobu Nikko to the hotel will run you about ¥2000. Nothing. Absolutely everything was amazing.
- Benjamin (9/5): Superb -
- Caitlin (5/5): Beautiful room and surrounds, but not very accommodating or flexible. - Beautiful surrounds, gorgeous rooms, and only a short taxi ride / shuttle bus from the centre. Breakfast was nice and accommodated dietary restrictions. If you have dietary restrictions (e.g. vegan or dairy-free), make sure you book the dinner option and specify. They don’t accommodate these restrictions on their in-room / bar menu, so you won’t be able to have dinner at the hotel (unless you have booked the dinner ahead — which we didn’t do). Also, the staff struggle with English (not uncommon in Japan), and we found a couple of staff members got quite frustrated with us due to miscommunications. It ended up adding an uncomfortable vibe to our stay.
- Harry (9/5): Superb -
- A.p. (6/5): Pleasant - Beautiful view. Hotel is OK I would not choose again, one cannot open a window, it makes a cheap impression. Breakfast is fine but not super
- Yuxiao (10/5): Exceptional -
