Guest Reviews
- Romily (8/5): - The cottage was comfortable and well equipped and in an ideal location to get to the Lake District or nearby beaches.
- Branislav (10/5): -
- Ciska (9/5): - Veel ruimte en leuk ingericht, top ontbijt
- Emmajane (10/5): -
- Bailey (8/5): - Our stay at the cottage was lovely. Very nice qwerky cottage. Had everything you need. Was in a fab location close to everything you need. The air fryer broke & Jay went out the same day & bought a new one for us. Lovely bloke. Would definitely go back. The steps up to the cottage & the bedroom were steep. Ok for the younger generation not so good for the older generations. Other than that it was great.
- Daniel (8/5): - Breakfast was amazing bit of netflix really easy check- in
Over all very good Seagull mess on car stairs
- Amelia (8/5): Id put on weight if I stayed here too long!!! - Breakfast was included and is a real winner, staff at cafe super friendly . Also the attention to details with toiletries, tea/coffee etc, we really appreciated this. Comfy bed and enjoyed being in the eaves. Shower could do with an upgrade
- RICHARD (9/5): Great value and location for an overnight getaway. - Very we’ll equipped, great location
- Sandra (10/5): Great apartment - Lovely, clean apartment. Had everything we needed, +more, including electric blanket! Problem with shower blockage was dealt with 10 minutes after contacting the host, which was fairly late at night, and coffee and shampoo dropped off the next day after we mentioned that they weren't there, even though we said we were ok without them.
Great breakfast, friendly staff, and all the locals were great.
It was very spacious and very light and airy. The steps weren't an issue as there was always something to hold on to.
We were given good advice on where to park, although most of the time we managed to park directly out front. It appeared that they weren't overly strict on parking regulations, although we did see a parking ticket on one car that, although it was displaying a permit, had parked outside of the marked bays, so we would recommend not being too complacent.
Would definitely return. The heaters weren't really powerful enough for the rooms, although we came prepared as we thought that might be the case. People in the pub next door were noisy, but quietened down before we went to bed.
- Martin (9/5): - Spacious flat, very well equipped.
- Elisabete (10/5): Relaxing. - It was easy to find.
Very welcoming, cosy and nicely scented. I can’t find faults.

- Justine (9/5): Great location and a quirky property , service was excellent and bonus breakfast in the family cafe was great as well ha - Really Quirky property :-) can tell
It’s well looked after. We didn’t need anything as lots of teas etc and little sachets of oat milk and breakfast bits etc. It’s a great location I imagine it’s glorious in the summer months. Felt a little bit threw together but that’s the charm of an old well loved property. lots of stuff in the corner of the bedroom and boxes of refills in the kitchen, could be stored else where ? Personal preference really but the quality of the bed linen wasn’t great but bed comfy enough.
- Alexander (10/5): - Everything Nothing
- Jawwad (8/5): -
- Mohamed (8/5): -
- Siobhan (9/5): Absolutely lovely place to stay. Would definitely recommend people to stay. - The location was easy to find and it was comfy and roomy and the little extras like dog bed was lovely. Heated blanket on, lights on for when we entered. It was very cosy stay. The only things was the front door could do with replacing, as it doesn't give a great first impression and just for our comfort, the couches were small and hard.
- Phil Scat (10/5): - Great accommodation, comfy bed, kitchen has everything that you need. The location is perfect, nice and quiet. Breakfast was 10/10 Sofas in the living room are really uncomfortable. The place is quite cold, even using the portable heaters provided I struggled to warm the place up.
- Dagz (10/5): - Everything was perfect! It's a proper gem! You have everything what you need even a air fryer! The pub outside was a bit too much so glad I took my earplugs :)
- Leonie (10/5): - Everything!! Perfect little place for a quiet get away. Na
- Richard (10/5): - The central location was ideal, the cottage was equipped with all you could need so all good. Nothing really not to like.
- Daniel (9/5): - Everything, nice location, felt like home Nothing

- Karen (9/5): Enjoyable snd a overal great experience - Loverly cottage great host The steps
- Ruth (8/5): Bells Yard ideal for accessing the coast of Cumbria. - Ideal location close to everything in Maryport as well as pleasant drive to the lakes.
The breakfast was amazing! It wasa tad cold, wasn't expecting toasty given its mid November but still cold, heaters not sufficient for size of property.
- Margaret (8/5): Clean and comfortable with an excellent breakfast. - Breakfast excellent and accommodation clean and comfortable More details on the situation as took some time to locate.
- Ann marie (10/5): - Just loved every bit of it Nothing
- stacie (10/5): - I like how comfortable it is, was a bit sketchy on the stairs as they’re really steep but the host did message me to say about how steep they are. Host was also really good at communicating and letting you know tips before you arrive. Breakfast is also included but I left to come back down south before the cafe opened There’s nothing to dislike about the property
- Diana (10/5): -

- Matt (10/5): Home from home when working away - Homely whilst away from work. Lovely and clean. Owner couldn’t have been more helpful and a great overall stay!
- Joy (9/5): A great August break would recommend 👍 - Super breakfast & service at nearby cafe owned by host.
Really comfortable Flat , a bit unusual / whacky in a good way . We had everything we needed and really enjoyed our stay especially walking along sea front, harbour , beach, marina etc. Lovely local pub & fish and chips near harbour ! Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and the Roman museum . The stairs are steep up to the cottage but not a problem for us ! Bathroom is on floor below bedroom so back down the stairs and across the living accommodation so don’t leave it until the last minute! Nothing not to like here ! One or two small issues due to age of property but soon sorted . Host is easy to contact if any worries . A great base to explore Maryport & local areas/ Keswick & Cockermouth & Carlisle is only a short train ride away and has a beautiful Cathedral & shops.
- Eleanor (9/5): - Comfortable and quirky. Very thoughtfully provisioned. Lovely host.
- Kerstie (10/5): Excellent location and well equipped apartment. - Well equipped, great location Nothing, everything was perfect
- Fiona (8/5): -
- Jack (6/5): Clean, well equipped property but steep steps - Property location good Access to property and bedroom very steep - this was mentioned after we had purchased a 2 night stay
- Kaung Htet (9/5): - Old cottage but with well equipped facilities. Clean and friendly landlord
- Ann (9/5): Lovely short break with the dog - Great amenities, small touches thought about like dog bed, bowl, biscuits. Had everything we needed for a short stay. Ideal location for us as friend was playing in a band there for Maryport live weekend.
Hosts were friendly and breakfast was lovely.
Coastal walk 5 mins away.
- Alan (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing breakfast
- Jamie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (8/5): Short but pleasurable. - Breakfast good. Nice location and as we had a hire car they were able to give us a parking label so that was good. Also we were able to get our washing done as it had a washing machine and a drying wrack we could put up in the living room. Nothing really. Need to be a bit careful on the back stairs but they warned us about that.
- Emilio (10/5): Exceptional -
- Grant (9/5): Superb - A nice self contained flat in the centre of the town which was absolutely fine for our overnight stay on a cycle route. It is an old building but everything was spotlessly clean and the host had clearly gone the extra mile to make the place comfortable. Yes, steep stairs but you must be blind if you hadn't read that before booking and no issue to us.
The host provided excellent details of location and entry. A nice breakfast included in the nearby cafe. A bit of an issue with the plug in the bathroom sink draining. A minor issue.
- Lorna (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was great .a full english breakfast was included was superb
- Pete (10/5): Exceptional - It’s a beautiful 200yr old cottage & extremely spacious, everything you need is there inc breakfast cereal etc. Absolutely nothing it was fantastic
- Deesha (10/5): Cosy, comfortable, welcoming. Satisfied. - It was cosy and welcoming. Snacks were provided. The person hand delivered hairdryer when we thought we didn't have one. Very kind. It was a good comfortable stay. The stairs, too small and steep. We kinda knocked our knees going sideways to avoid falling, and head on the low ceiling on the stairs 😂 but it was alright. The sofa bed was too firm.
- Kate (10/5): Lovely characterful flat in central Maryport - Lovely flat, lots of space & character
Central location
Great breakfast @ cafe down the road
Basics included e.g. tea, coffee, even dog treats! Nothing
- Josie (8/5): Very good -
- Elaine (10/5): Lovely - Very large and quirky. and wet well equipped Comfortable bedroom
Owner responded to query very quickly.
- Ralph (9/5): Spacious, everything we needed, comfortable. Great breakfast at local cafe included. Excellent TV and WiFi. - Quaint, historic, eccentric. In a back alley, up steep and uneven steps.
Very steep stairs to bedroom
- Pamela (8/5): A lovely quirky apartment in a great location - Excellent breakfast at the owners cafe.
- Steve (10/5): Exceptional -
- Debbie (10/5): Great stay, will definitely book again - Lovely quaint apartment, great location
- Kevin (10/5): Wow what a place to go to. - James the host very accommodating.
I have mobility issues and was warned by james before payment about the access stairs to the flat. I thought I could manage them, but I over estimated my ability. James immediately offered to transfer my party to a different property - exceptional customer care. We didn't take up his offer as I had siblings in the area with similar issues, so although I decamped the other 2 in the party stayed.
I still met them for breakfast, which was outstanding and amazing value. I can't rate this more highly for more able bodied people.
The facilities in the flat were exceptional.
The flat is a home from home and I was deeply saddened to decamp. This is not a dislike comment in the slightest.
I would like to offer a suggestion on both the outer and inner stairs.
Maybe consider putting grab handles at the front door to act as an extension to the bannisters/railings. There was a slight support gap at the top just before entering the property.
Similarly at the top of the amazing bedroom the support bannisters at the top need to be extended to offer that extra peace of security and mobility safety.
- Graham (9/5): Superb - Excellent breakfasts, very good location, good sized rooms, very welcoming when you go into the flat. Bed was a bit soft for my liking
- Hilary (7/5): Quirky. - Very quaint apartment. Comfortable and well equipped. Outside steps to front door and inside stairs to bedroom were both very steep and somewhat scary.
Breakfast was filling and tasty. The owner was friendly and helpful.
- John (9/5): I would book again. Thank you James. - Fantastic. Lack of proper heaters.
- Kelly (10/5): Exceptional - The place is a hidden gem beautifully done out, has everything you need, and more, emaculately clean and close to all you need. A home from home 🏡
- Carla (10/5): Excellent apartment - Great apartment, full of character and had absolutely everything I needed. Great to have the space and freedom of an apartment. Easy walk from the railway station. The main purpose of my visit was for Roman history, so an easy walk up to the museum. Would definitely recommend as a base to explore and relax. Great communication from the owner.
- Jacqueline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nathalie (10/5): My partner and I had a great weekend, plenty to do! Would love yo return again soon. - Location was a great little town, breakfast in the hosts cafe was amazing. Bed was.comfy. cosy little place
- Charlene (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the quirky property, hopefully be back one day
- Stefan (9/5): Nice charming place to stay just a few mins walk to the sea. - The location is excellent with pubs on the same street and around the corner. Heron foods just 2 mins away. The apartment is spacious and comfortable. The steps which seem to get mentioned a lot are ok if you take your time and be careful. The free breakfast and drink were delicious at the cafe 2 mins away . Parking outside or just around the corner with the provided permit was never a problem for the 3 days. I checked in early and left my bags inside whilst the cleaner who also works at the cafe( who does a good job) and went out exploring the town. I also checked out later after having breakfast at 10 on Sunday and then going back to get my stuff in the car. A few things need addressing, the loft bedroom window has no blind on it and on a sunny morning this would be a problem. I bought some frozen food from heron foods which I put in the freezer but then found out there was no oven ,just an air fryer and microwave. The WiFi isn't great, can work then not. Will feel chilly if you don't have the heaters right up . Forgetting about the wood beams in the bedroom and banging my head on them!
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional - Nothing
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Judi (10/5): Lovely quirky building , with well equipped kitchen - Fabulous breakfast , central location short walk to the sea front Sofas are fine but could do with higher backs and deeper seats to make more comfortable
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional - The apartment was warm and welcoming. Everything was lovely and cozy! The hosts were lovely and informative. Perfect for a walking getaway as it is close to many walks in the lake district.
- Dave (10/5): Exceptional -
- Phoebe (10/5): Excellent value, location, host, breakfast. - Everything, especially the breakfast.
- Bea (9/5): Very enjoyable stay in a lovely, clean apartment in the centre of Maryport! - Good location, very clean, everything you needed, well equipped!!
Good communication with James!! The sofas were not very comfortable, otherwise, no problems!
- Fidel (6/5): Pleasant -
- Carl (9/5): Superb - Great place for a few days. Nothing.
- Roger (9/5): Superb - Great location, superb accommodation, and the host couldn't have been more helpful. It was cold, but OK once I found the heaters!
- Demi (10/5): Peaceful! Relaxing and such a beautiful place to visit! - The property was warm and cozy! Really well decorated throughout .The property provided with everything we would need with an extra basket provided with little bits of different cereal which was a nice touch!
Communication was great! Really easy to get in!
We was warned about the stairs been steep but we didn't have an issue at all with stairs inside or outside these didn't affect us in any way! The property provided us with everything we needed and if they was something that we would need we had a telephone number and great communication!
There isn't anything I didn't like! Just a shame it was longer! The parking was abit stressful but we got it sorted.
- Louise (9/5): Superb - Lovely little flat ideal location for trips off and a walk around the harbour No good if you have reduced mobility as lots of steps
- Philip (8/5): Very good - Location and staff were excellent. The unit was warm, cosy and very welcoming. For us in our late 70s the stairs were a bit challenging but Jay, our host, had told us about them beforehand.
- Mark (6/5): The 'cottage' acts as a metaphor for Maryport! - I fell in love with Maryport! Cumbrians who don't live there refer to it as 'Scaryport' but it is a lovely, safe place full of friendly locals. It's rundown with lots of boarded up frontages but there are lots of 'green shoots' growing such as a art gallery featuring local artists, a dog friendly cafe and even classical concerts! This is a town that is re-eventing itself. In 10 years time, it will be a trendy, up and coming place.
Which brings me to Bells Yard Cottage which acts as a metaphor for Maryport: charming, rundown, strangely welcoming, comfortable and in need of some TLC! This first floor apartment above a shop (cottage is an artistic licence!) has character as was built in the early 1800s but is extremely cluttered. I wasn't so worried about the steep stairs to the attic bedroom; as it is very cosy and quiet. However, the access steps to the flat are uneven and a hazard when wet or if you have had one too many! Badly in need of a sensor light at the top of the stairs, so bring a torch. This is an accident waiting to happen.
The apartment is only cleaned in a perfunctory way eg the bits that show! For instance, the floor was pretty filthy underneath the various sofas!
Personally, I could forgive all of the above except the kitchen is poorly stocked and not suitable for anything other than basic cooking.
Bells Yard Cottage needs to look to the changes taking place in Maryport and up its game, if it doesn't want to be left behind! Some work and decluttering to the apartment would elevate it considerably.
- Vishvaas (10/5): Highly recommended - Property is cozy and nice It was nice
- James (1/5): Hellish nightmare do not book this dump - Nothing. Live wires.no hot water in bathroom .smells of dampness..floor not safe.cold too metal poles for heating.stairs. outside unsafe.washing machine filthy.oven stinks.could not use attic bed due to acute stair angle slept on floor. No fresh linen or towels. Reported to maryport council.si Glen bed in lounge excrement stain .laminate flooring coming up been in touch with tourist board..phoning the council monday health saftey Everything dirty hovel bed sit
- Gilly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Magesh (9/5): Superb - Value for money. Well kept property. Nice staff. Would recommend
- Elena (8/5): Very good -
- Amelia (8/5): Lovely little spot with lots of space and all the comforts. - Great spot on the Hadrian cycleway. Simple to find compared to some apartments. Steep stairs but we were warned. A few nice pubs nearby and place to lock up our bikes.
- Evgeniya (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was great! Very filling and tasty! The host is helpful and friendly!
- Alison (9/5): Comfy, easy, welcoming and provides all that you need. Not stuck up! - Nicely quirky inside and quaint building. Good location for walking round town and to the harbour. Comfy bed and everything you need. Felt welcoming. Good shower and water pressure. Easy communication with host and simple to get access with a helpful video of the entrance-way. Saturday-night music and enthusiastic singing from pub next door was not a problem, quite jolly actually and over by 10pm. Good breakfast in Redby’s too! Good value for money. The host plainly warned about steep stairs to the bedroom, so we did expect it, but they are steep, like on a boat and you must take care. We wondered if making the lower-floor sitting room into the main bedroom would be an easier option? (But I expect this has been considered)
- Donald (10/5): We had a great stay, beautiful city and sea port. - No breakfast, but if you went to the host’s restaurant you got 1/2 off for breakfast and lunch. Really cute courtyard out back of property. Easy walk all around. The knowledge to older people that the stairs up to the apartment are steep, and the stairs up to the bedroom are steep and narrow, with the bathroom is downstairs.
- Gray (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the quirkiness, the friendliness and the location.
- Karen (10/5): Great stay lovely breakfast - Great communications with James. Very quirky little flat. Breakfast was yummy and made by James and the lovely staff at Redby's. Great weekend thank you.
- Sharron (10/5): A little gem of a place. - This quaint two storey flat was clean, spacious and full of little quirks, which we loved. The host, Jay was very helpful and welcoming. He made sure the cottage was packed full of provisions. He did warn us about the steep stone steps to the entrance, but that was part of the quirkiness for us.
Breakfast is served at a lovely cafe, just 2 minutes walk away and you just pick anything you like from the breakfast menu. Service is fast and the food was delicious.
The location of the flat is central, a mere 5 minute walk from the harbour, and free parking is always a bonus Can't fault the place. I'd definitely stay here again.
- Tatyana (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely little place
Great breakfast There was nothing not to like
- Steve (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lizzie (9/5): Superb -
- Neil (8/5): great place, comfortable, we both had a great nights sleep, quiet, pub next door - excellent location , all facilities easily accessible, no need to drive anywhere, free parking at weekends You required a parking disc for an extra 2 hrs of free parking, this was supplied at the cottage, if needing to stay longer you,d have to find alternative parking arrangements, but for me this is a minor bug bear, if you don,t mind the walk , plenty of parking near the docks
- Brian (9/5): Superb -
