Guest Reviews
- derek (8/5): - Location was suitable for my needs
- Robert (9/5): I gave very short notice and all was ready. - It was everything that you would expect and want for a quick overnight stay. Most important, a comfortable bed, a spotless shower and toilet suite No problem at all.
- Jon (7/5): -
- Serie (10/5): -
- Nigel (4/5): The room was good but otherwise disappointing - Big room No food
Insufficient toiletries
Loud music from bar very audible in room until late
- Denise (10/5): - Welcoming
Spotlessly clean
Warm and comfortable
Fantastic value for money
- james (7/5): Over nighter. - The close location to Close House Golf resort.
We were made very welcome by the locals and the staff. Nothing really it was great for my needs.
- FRANCISCO JAVIER (6/5): -
- Joanna (6/5): Good for a 1 night stay while walking Hadrians Wall - Good location in centre of village, very clean and friendly staff. Very small rooms, no where to sit except on the bed. Tiny bathroom. Very loud and noisy on Saturday night.
- Stephen (7/5): -
- Johnson (8/5): - . .
- Teresa (8/5): - Lovely staff, room clean and bed comfortable
- Victoria (7/5): Nice, clean, functional room but bring your earplugs! - Cheery welcome from 4pm (pub not even open before that)
Very clean Small room and shower that you had to work as a team to navigate!
Loud voices and juke box from pub downstairs (as described to be fair)
- ALISON (8/5): - Comfortable room and contained everything that we needed at a good price Although comfortable the room was very small. We could also hear the noise from from the bar downstairs (should have been expected as it was a pub). If you are walking Hadrians Wall using a luggage transport service you need to leave your bag at the local Spar. No breakfast or meal option. We requested breakfast from the bistro over the road where other some walkers were staying. Its over two miles to the Wall all downhill getting there.
- julia (7/5): Stop over for our Hadrian's Wall walk - There was a bit of confusion re breakfast booking as to whether it was included... We ended up just popping to the well stocked & very friendly Spar next door.
Lovely authentic pizzeria just a few mins stroll down the lane. Room & ensuite very small for the price but cosy enough.
No food at the pub but we were OK with the pizzeria.
- Ian (9/5): - Super efficient staff, we checked in at a busy time but they were so good, very friendly and great price, for the room and a great location. Will definitely stay again
- Charles (9/5): - Great value , clean with everything you need

- Claire (7/5): - It’s convenient location to the Hadrians wall walk I was doing. Mattress could do with replacing, could feel the springs. The worse point was the room next door had drunken people in and the walls are thin I could hear everything. Woke me up at midnight and didn’t shut up for ages. Not a good sleep
- Veldhuis (8/5): -
- Andy (10/5): -
- Stevenson (5/5): Bad customer service 😑 - The location is great We didn't like that on friday the owner had the bar open till after 12, music still bouncing at 0130. Then didnt lock up till after 0200. With drunks leaving at around 0200 singing there head off.
He apologised the next day through the staff as he avoided us. We stayed another night. In our single room with a double bed crammed in it.
I would stay at somewhere else if you can.
- philip (6/5): Good stop on hadrians wall walk. - Didn't look great from the outside but the room was nice, good size, fairly comfortable. Shower was small, staff were great, food was good and a nice atmosphere. Certainly not a fancy hotel but definitely a comfortable stay for 1 night. Small shower, some extra shower gel would have been good too. Famy room could have done with a side table.
- Lars (10/5): - Wundervoll und urig. Perfekter Ausgangspunkt zum Wandern.
- Jeroen (5/5): - Proximity to station. Smelly hallway and rooms. Very small. Sound of the pub below.
- Gregory (5/5): If you need a simple room with a soft warm place for your head this'll do on a budget. - Room was adequate - single bed with en suite.
Free WiFi was brilliant.
Staff were friendly enough.
For the price, it met expectations and for £50/n would use it again if I had to, just some areas for improvement. Shower didn't close properly so water went all over the floor, and the shower head besides having very little power is also caked in mould and looks never to have been deep cleaned.
Room wasn't cleaned or bin emptied in the 3 nights I was there.
Hallway stank of cigarettes (this thankfully didn't follow to the room).
- James (4/5): Staff great and very lively inn. Felt most welcome. -
- Gary (8/5): -
- Laura (9/5): -
- john (10/5): -
- Jelte (7/5): - Someone was smoking in the room.
- Wendy (8/5): Great stopover on our way to Scotland - Location wonderful, staff chatty and helpful
- naama (4/5): - the beds they have a pub and people are making noise until 2am and they know it and they give you earplugs. so they know that you can not sleep
- zbigniew (8/5): -
- John (8/5): This was in the right place for our needs. - Room only. A bit cramped, public parking is variable.
- Darren (7/5): -
- Joanna (1/5): Awful. - Nothing The accommodation is basic rooms above a very noisy pub which opened well beyond licensing hours and was still making a noise at 1.30am. There was no catering and nowhere to relax, escape the noise or dry clothes etc, To be fair the host, when showing me to the room provided a pack of earplugs together with the towels - which I took to be some sort of joke.
Finally, the alarm for the building went off at 4.30am in the morning and was left ringing deafeningly until I left at 7am.
- David (10/5): Very nice room small but very clean - Excellent
- Emma (9/5): - Great accommodation near the hadrian's wall path. Comfortable room for great value.
- Nina (6/5): Convenient, comfy bed for the night. - Cheap, available, clean. Easy to find, easy to get in and out. Comfortable bed. Some pub odour, pub clientele were smoking under the window so smell drifted in.
On the road so some road noise.
- Bev (3/5): Lovely room - horrible hospitality. - The room was well equipped and clean. The en-suite was a little cramped but it was clean and functional. Lack of welcome - none provided! Was told where my room was and shown to a back staircase and told Room number 4 on the left. The only interaction with the staff I had. Did not feel comfortable at all in the place as the pub below sounded a bit rough. as a single female traveller I would not visit this place again. Was not made to feel welcome or safe at all by the owners.
- Donna (8/5): Clean, comfortable accommodation with close walking distance to local restaurant - and bar in the building. - Good clean comfortable accommodation with everything you need. Close to good restaurant (walking distance) or bar downstairs.
- TDR13 (7/5): Great value for money but no food available during the week. - Stayed here after first day doing Hadrians wall. Good location as not far from trail. Nice pub and town and room was comfy. No food is served at the restaurant other than weekends and no where else in town was serving food either. No cooking facilities available only a kettle so had pot noodles for dinner after a 30km walk. Best check ahead well in advance is food is an option anywhere before you book.
- Bettes (8/5): - L'accueil et la disponibilité du jeune homme à la réception.
- Matthew (4/5): - A friendly pub I stayed on a Saturday night. Music and partying went on until about 0200. The Black Bull should make people aware of this.
- Evan (7/5): Decent place - Very usable spot for the Hadrian's Wall Path and overall a decent area. The lock on my door didn't seem to work and one of the staff entered, unaware that the room was occupied. I did book it last minute so perhaps the info was not passed on.
- Gary (8/5): A friendly comfortable stay with very good vacilities - Pub in small country town Bathroom modern and clean Bed comfortable Amenities worked Owner was helpful to needs No breakfast included
- Bert (8/5): Voldeed prima!
- Ted (7/5): - Ideal location in Wylam just a few minutes walk from friends house.
Very comfortable bed Overpowering smell of detergents and cleaning agents. Fortunately the window could be left wide open.
Room was very compact and almost filled by the bed. Fine for me but could be a problem for anyone with restricted mobility.
- Evgenii (5/5): It's the cheapest option around, but for a reason. Would stay somewhere else next time - The price The "Budget Single Room" turned out to be a shared room with five beds, although I was the only occupant. Only some of the beds, towels, and tea cups were clean. Despite being advertised as available for an additional charge, breakfast was not offered at all. Overall, while there was nothing seriously wrong, next time I’d be willing to pay a bit more to stay somewhere else.
- Carys (3/5): Noisy and no food - Location. Pub. Drilling at 3.30am. No food, although listing still states it. No staff to talk to in the morning as pub was closed. Contacted host and message returned by postmaster
- Ann (4/5): A bed for the night, warm and clean - Clean, so beautifully clean Cramped room. Used every inch of space.
I didn’t meet a single member of staff
- Norman (4/5): Served a purpose. - Friendly greeting
Spotlessly clean, immaculate.
Very little fuss
Plenty of tea/coffee etc in the room.
Lots of towels. Room was cramped. Really cramped. Had to have feet in the shower cubicle to use the loo. I’m sure the bathroom layout could’ve been better.
Every ounce of space was squeezed out of the bedroom.
No food available at all, walking up the road to a cafe for breakfast is a nuisance in good weather, just glad it wasn’t raining.
Poor parking
- Morris (6/5): Black Bull is a local pub rather than an hotel. As such, is friendly and welcoming, but limited - No breakfast provided Breakfast included
- Sarah (5/5): Convenient place to stay if you want to be near a pub. Not good value for money though - In the centre of Wylam, right above a pub, so good if you want a drink. I'd called to ask beforehand regarding breakfast being available, they said yes. When I arrived, the person who serves breakfast was away, so I had to figure out an alternative. Fortunately, there's a Spar next door that opens early. I don't think it was good value for money. The room was very small, no chair, just a bed in a cramped room. At least everything was clean. They also had loud music playing until 11pm in the pub downstairs. Not ideal if you need to get up early the next day. No warning about the noise either or ear plugs provided.
- Green (4/5): I will never stay here again! - The rooms were generally clean and comfortable The rooms and en-suite were very small, very warm and very noisy. I asked for a fan but they didn't have any. The rooms were facing the road and I had to keep my window open to stop the room from feeling like an oven. There were lots of drunken people outside the pub for hours as the bar opened late and catered largely for young adults who were very noisy!
On my arrival, when I asked what time break would be served, I was informed that there would be no breakfast as the Chef was leaving the business and didn't want to do breakfasts any more!? One of the main reasons I chose this place was because they did breakfast, so I was very disappointed in their lack of what they had promised.
- Toni_clarke (3/5): Poor -
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Location excellent. Arrangements for late show entry need a review.
- Marc (5/5): Passable -
- Kiera (5/5): Passable - The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was fairly new and very clean. The loud music playing in the bar below, shook through the floorboards. This went on until 11pm and there was still noise until 12:30 am when you could here the last people leaving. The bathroom was small so your feet were in the shower when you sat on the loo! There was no breakfast avaliable.
- Gerard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (4/5): Disappointing - The young lady behind the bar was lovely. The bathroom was very clean. The bed was a small double. The music was boom boom until 23.00. The smokers were right under room 2, so the bedroom stank of smoke.
- Julie (9/5): Superb -
- Blair (4/5): Don't book if you expect to get some sleep. - The food and the catering staff were great. Helen is a feeder but in a good way, some great vlaue for dinner and breakfast. The pub is great but don;t expect any sleep The rooms are very well furninshed if a little small (sit on loo with feet in shower kind of small) but the worst thing by far and this will be the ruin of the pub, it has a music license till 2am and the rooms are right above the bar and aren't soundproofed so don;t expect any sleep. I was not the only one that had an issue with it but apparently the owner doens;t listen to feedback or even customer requests. Oh and when I arrived I was given a key to room 3, only to find that someone was already in room 3 fortunetyl still with all their clothes on :)
Great staff friendly customers, shit management.
- Georgette (10/5): Warm welcoming very friendly - I finished a 70 mile race got home at 3 am and the bed literally melted underneath me. It was delightful. I don’t think I’ve ever slept so well. Really lovely giving us a late checkout and a late breakfast that was to die for I might add
- Elizabeth (8/5): Clean polite friendly worth it - Lovely setting polite staff very clean, carpet was thick and fluffy and so were the towels. Shower was lovely. Mattresses were rock hard. But hey ho
- Paul (10/5): Great fish and chips ! - Great food and friendly staff Small rooms
- Ericmargery (10/5): Coast to coast cycle adventure - Staff couldn't do enough to help make my stay enjoyable. They went out of their way to find a secure overnight storage for my bicycle. They also made sure that I was well fed after my days ride recommending items on the menu I might enjoy. And the pint newly drawn was very welcome to overcome my thirst. As the barman said it took longer to pull than it took me to drink it
- Hughes (5/5): Passable - The bar tender was extremely pleasant and helpful We were leaving to walk Hadrians Wall at 8.00am . Nit only could we not get any breakfast at that time, there was no one around at all, and everywhere was locked up. I just gad to push the key through the letterbox. The previous day, they were clised till 4.00pm, so our bags could not be delivered till then.
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (6/5): Cheap bb near Hadrians wall - Good position and a short bus ride from Hadrians wall.
The room was freshly decorated and a new bathroom. The bathroom was rather small. No breakfast but understand maybe not much demand .
When checking out no staff around
- Frederic (9/5): Superb - Quite pplace Nothing to declare
- Amyy (10/5): Excellent! - Loved how clean it was and the rooms had just been done up, plenty of towels, The host was really nice. The bathroom was very small, but it’s an old building so appreciate nothing can be done about that.
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthew (7/5): Good - Good for hadrians wall haddon on the wall Nothing
- Lauren (10/5): This hotel provided a cosy stay with outstanding service, where the staff's friendliness and helpful - Our recent stay at The Black Bull Inn was made truly memorable by the exceptional service and warm atmosphere. From the moment we arrived, the man at the front desk/behind the bar made us feel incredibly welcome. His friendly and engaging personality made the check-in process a breeze, and he even personally showed us to our room.
While the room was on the smaller side, it was perfectly adequate for our needs. The bar man sincerely apologized for the size, explaining that the other rooms were already occupied and he hadnt realised how big our dogs were. The room was indeed cosy, and the bed and pillows were exceptionally comfortable – we had a great night's sleep! We also appreciated the tea-making facilities and TV in the room. The bathroom was a bit of a squeeze, with limited space around the toilet, but this didn't bother us.
The hotel's kitchen was under refurbishment during our stay, but the bar man went above and beyond to ensure we had options for meals. We were welcome to bring in food and eat in our room or at the bar, which was a thoughtful touch.
Breakfast the next morning at the adjoining "Bait Box" was a highlight of our stay. The panini with cranberry and brie, and the bacon, was absolutely delicious and a great way to start the day.
Overall, any minor shortcomings of the room were far outweighed by the exceptional service and friendly atmosphere. We would definitely recommend this hotel to others, especially those looking for a cosy and welcoming place to stay. There was nothing i didn't like about this accommodation
- Frank (8/5): A Freindly , helpful place to stay. Clean and modern - Very clean , modern and easy to get to A bit loud when trying to sleep
- Aideen (4/5): Good for Hadrian's Wall - Very close yo Hadrian's Wall Path.
Lovely warm rooms. Via messenger I was told dinner would be available, I was doing the walk so fuel was important, but on arrival was told there was no food on Mondays.
There was no one to hand the keys in to (or drop box) on leaving.
- Katherine (10/5): Awesome, clean, food superb. - Walking Hadrian’s wall. Cane off the wall to stay in Wylam. Brilliant stop over.
- John (6/5): Bring toiletries, or don't visit. - I booked a single room, it was very clean and bed was comfortable. There were no toiletries, not even a bar of soap, I asked at the bar and was told that they never put toiletries in the room, it must be over 30 years since I stayed in a place that didn't supply shower gel, and never before where a bar of soap was not supplied at the sink.
- Keith (5/5): Average due to the lack of VAT invoice, this will enertably stop me from staying there again - I was disappointed that I could not get a VAT invoice for my stay,as this causes so many problems when submitting my expenses.
- Mclaughlin (8/5): Very nice stay - Very good
- James (6/5): Good location close to Newcastle - just check the evening entertainment before booking - I had booked just a room so I catered for myself for my meals. The accommodation was clean and tidy in my room. It was a little compact but as I was on my own it was absolutely perfect. I was working on the West side of Newcastle so the location was really good too in a lovely small village - there was a couple of local pubs for food and a pizza restaurant along with 2 small shops. When checking in I was informed that the bar was open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights and the music could be heard in my room. But to be fair I was so tired on the 2 nights I was there it didn't keep me awake. I would recommending contacting the Black Bull to find out if they will be playing music late again before confirming your booking if you are a light sleeper.
- Louise (10/5): Exceptional - Bed - very comfy
Pillows - new
Mattress and pillow protectors in excellent condition.
Towels - brand new Nothing
- Sharon (6/5): Staff were very accommodating. Basic small rooms but clean - Breakfast was very big and freshly cooked Only 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel between 2 of us and no shower gel or soap
- Claire (5/5): Cheap and convenient - Cheap and cheerful. Newly refurbished rooms Music at the pub played til 1.30 am and thudded through the floor
