Guest Reviews
- Vernon (10/5): Relaxing after a tough day - The property is an amazing old Samurai house, with lots of history. There is a beer garden at the back where we could relax while we waited for our room.
The most amazing staff , Hitomi, Lisa and Nicholas. Nothing
- Luke (10/5): Beautiful home with the BEST staff - We had no idea that a little pit stop in Chikatsuyu would be the highlight of our trip. The home was gorgeous, clean and well maintained. I felt like I was living in a postcard or studio ghibli movie. The staff was one of the most hospitable and took care of our every need. They were able to give us all the advice we needed on our Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, from bus times to helping us get our luggage sent to our next property. The food was excellent and kept us extremely well fueled and satisfied. Thank you Hitomi, Nicolas, Rueben & Lisa for making our time in Chikatsuyu a true memory. We loved every second of our stay
- Jacqueline (10/5): Terrific food - NONAGASE guest house might have been the best meal we had in a full month in Japan The the service and presentation of the food was A+ meal itself was delicious. Highly recommend buying the dinner. Oh, and the wine was good too. There is a fun and social beer garden behind the property. Open to the public. There are only two rooms in the stay. and they were very comfortable rooms.
Gezellig!
- Laura (10/5): - This was our favourite stay in our entire Japan trip. The food was INCREDIBLE, and the staff were so kind. Hitomi very kindly catered for my husbands shellfish allergy and had our breakfast and lunch bags ready to go early so we could catch the early bus. It was lovely sitting in the beer garden and chatting with our fellow guests, and the massage chair was heaven after a long day's hike. Thank you so much again for such a wonderful stay
- Sacha (9/5): From all around the world we come together with love and kindness. - It was lovely to be in a traditional Japanese home, with a 60/70's flair, the hosts were all very friendly and kind. The food was incredible and delicious, they put in allot of effort to create a nice experience.
Nulla. Ci è piaciuto tutti
- Azhari (10/5): -
- Jaroslav (10/5): Byl to sen, nebo nebyl? Stále nevím. - Vše domyšleno do posledního detailu. Nenechte si ujít večeři. Stojí za to. Zatím vrchol našeho pobytu Japonsku.
- Ann Nee (8/5): Really good experience. Neat and clean place, amazing staffs. Wonderful dinner. Love it! - The place was clean and neat. The staffs were wonderful and the manager, Hitomi was really nice and considerate, and helped me dry my wet belongings. Nothing
- Rawand (10/5): I recommend this olace for anyone who is lucky enough to book it - Very lovely experience, the hostess was just amazing! She was super helpful with lots of good information, great tips, …etc.
The food was also great! We enjoyed it
- ilana (10/5): -
- Hiendarsanti (10/5): Amazing place, don’t miss the dinner option! - Amazing staff, Hitomi is the best!!! Dinner was a 5-star experience in taste, presentation, and service.
An original traditional Japanese house with a 300year old cherry blossom tree beside it. The sitting and dining area added to the traditional Japanese experience. Great location right next to the Chikatsuyu-oji bus stop. A cozy beer garden in the back of the house for relaxing in the afternoon. Nothing
- Elisabeth (10/5): - Excellent staff, friendly and fun. The beer garden is perfect to connect with other Kumono travelers. The meal was one of the best Ive had. Can’t recommend this place enough! All great
- Chua (10/5): - location is superb! right along kumano kodo route, 6 course dinner is awesome!
Echt wouw! Super aanrader Echt helemaal niets
- Rick (10/5): - Nonagase is such a special place to stay when hiking the Kumano Kodo. The guesthouse is a traditional heritage home of exquisite Japanese design and contains many beautiful antiques. There is also a very relaxing beer garden in the back garden where you can relax after a tough day hiking. But even better than the place is the host Hitomi and her staff who were all so helpful. Lastly the food was amazing. Only two rooms so book early and definitely stay here. Nothing
- Tom (10/5): Do yourself a favour, stay here if you can - Exceptional in every respect - from the wonderful greeting to the cute and vibrant beer garden to the fantastic team to the beautiful property - this was far more than we expected and clearly has been thought through carefully.
Deserving a separate mention is the food - being vegetarian on a Japan trip can be hit and miss, but the dinner we had was basically Michelin star standard, said without exaggeration. We have, in fact, had worse meals at Michelin starred places.
- Amy (10/5): Absolutely gorgeous. Exceeded all expectations! - Everything! The historic house, friendly staff and amazing food were stand outs. We felt so welcomed and really had a wonderful, relaxing time.
Hiromi and her team went the extra mile, and I would definitely recommend the dinner - it was so memorable. Nothing!
- beth (10/5): -
- Madelon (10/5): Perfect verblijf - Alles was fantastisch! Niks
- gidon (10/5): -
- Deanna (10/5): - The location, the people, the food, and the peacefulness --amazing, stellar, and beautiful!!
- LIN (10/5): -
- Fabian Andrin (10/5): -
- Alli (10/5): Amazing time at Nonagasse guest house the food, the building and the staff were phenomenal! - Great location, beautiful building and so clean and charming! The beer garden and outdoor lounge were fun and a wonderful community space.
- Paul (8/5): - Lovely host in a beautiful building. Clean and beautiful furnished room
Nice breakfast provided. Affordable lunch provided for trek. The room was lovely. But the toilet and shared shower facility does not represent value for money given the price paid. I didn't like how guests from the beer garden used the toilet next to my room. The room I stayed in had no security or lock. There is also considerable noise that comes from the kitchen area into the bedroom.
- Karen (10/5): So much care and attention to the details in this wonderful guest house that brought us comfort and joy. - This guesthouse is super special and we felt so lucky to have stayed there. The dinner was so delicious and Hitomi was so welcoming and delightful. A true highlight of our Kumano Kodo journey.
- Chloe (10/5): One of the loveliest places I have ever stayed - The house and garden are beautiful, the room is very comfortable, the dinner, breakfast and lunch box were all delicious. The staff are also so kind and welcoming Nothing
- donna (10/5): - I had a great night sleep and good food. I left their feeling very content and ready to keep hiking.
None
- Marta (10/5): - Exceptional!!!
- Ying Pyng (9/5): - Charming little ryokan. service was impeccable as was the food. Dinner and Breakfast. good place to rest along the kumano kodo route.
- Milou (10/5): - This place is a true gem and we feel so lucky to have found it. They have created such a cozy place with great hospitality and an amazing attention to detail. You feel very special stepping into this guesthouse. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
- Patty (10/5): A night in paradise after walking the Kumano Kodo - The house is spectacular in its design, history and serenity with exceptional facilities and the most generous staff. Our room was so comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious. We were sad to leave
- Patrick (10/5): Could not have been any better. A magical place - EVERYTHING Not a single negative thing to point out
- john (8/5): -
- Jing (10/5): 非常喜欢的温暖的有爱的地方 - 晚餐很棒,精致的每一道美味缓解了一天的疲惫;
早餐很棒,营养而美味,让我们满怀热情的开始徒步;
便当包,很赞,完全给我们力量;
- Cait (10/5): Brilliant place to stay. You feel so welcomed - Hitomi, Yutaka and Giovanni were our wonderful hosts. Beautiful guest house in very special location. The dinner was superb.
- jack (10/5): -
- Natália (10/5): This was definitely a highlight of our Japan trip! - During our trip to Japan, we stayed at several five-star or Michelin-star hotels, but this guest house was by far the best of them all. The place is incredibly clean, rich in history, yet modern at the same time. You can truly feel the history, while everything is so well maintained that it feels brand new. Everything was perfect from beginning to end. I loved it so much that I will definitely come back for at least two or three nights just to relax and enjoy this beautiful place. Thank you to the entire staff — this is exactly how top-level service should be. You’re doing an amazing job. Thank you for such a beautiful experience. ❤️
- Liyun (9/5): A well-located historic guesthouse in a former samurai residence, with a thoughtful host, authentic Japanese dinner, and - Excellent location with a bus stop just next to the guesthouse, making it very convenient for getting around.
The guesthouse itself is a former residence of a well-known local samurai, which gives the stay a unique historical atmosphere.
The host is incredibly kind and thoughtful — they helped me carefully plan my hiking route for the next day and even prepared a detailed list of bus timetables, which was truly helpful.
Dinner was a highlight: the Japanese-style meal was authentic, delicate, and beautifully prepared.
A very pleasant and memorable stay overall. Slightly expensive
- Alyssa (10/5): - One of the best stays we’ve ever had. All of the staff were so kind and attentive. If you have a chance to order the dinner please do. It was a Michelin (multi-star) experience right outside your room. Everything about the stay was exceptional. Highly highly highly recommend. Arigato!
- Chung Mien (10/5): -
- Christine (9/5): - Amazing service. Fabulous dinner. Great location for walking Kumano Kudo.
- Jean (10/5): - Beautiful rooms, delicious food and friendly hosts! Magical experience.
- Réka Adrienn (10/5): -
- richard (8/5): -
- Bart (10/5): -
(10/5): - The house is an old Japanese house, with beautiful and clean design. The team was excellent and professional. The food was like a piece of art. The air-conditioning wasn't strong enough to heat the room.
- Maria Camila (10/5): - Our stay at Nonagase Guesthouse was an absolute treasure. The moment we arrived, we felt the calm and charm of this beautiful place. Dinner and breakfast were both incredible — thoughtfully prepared, delicious, and truly some of the best meals we had on our trip. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and the futons were perfect after long days of hiking. Everything about the guesthouse felt cozy, welcoming, and full of heart. We left feeling restored and grateful, and we would love to return one day. Highly recommend!
- Judith (10/5): A truly special place - A truly special place on the Kumano Kodo that you will not want to leave. The staff are an absolute joy - so welcoming and friendly - they could not have done more for us. Our room was cosy and warm - the best way to finish off a long day of walking. Be sure to arrive in time to enjoy the beer garden which opens at 2pm. And, dinner is absolutely delicious - a degustation style feast featuring all local produce rather from their own garden or farmers markets. If you have the chance to stay here on your Kumano pilgrimage it will be one of the best parts of your journey! Nothing - it was all perfect
- Isaac (10/5): - Gorgeous historic property right along the Kumano Kodo trail. Relaxing, attractive beer garden for early arrival. Friendly, helpful staff hailing from nearby and from around the world. Delightful six-course European style dinner highlighting local ingredients.
RAS
- Matthew (10/5): - Beautiful room, amazing food and very helpful staff
- Madalyn (10/5): Warm, peaceful, perfect place - Everything. The hosts were so welcoming and hospitable, they looked after us so well while also allowing us our own time to relax. The house was so beautiful and the food was incredible. They provided a simple yet delicious breakfast for the next day. It was the perfect place to relax after a big day of walking! Can not recommend highly enough.
Nichts
- Judith (10/5): -
- jennifer (10/5): Gem of a guest house with phenomenal food and lovely staff - NONAGASE guest house is a gem. Hitomi and her team have created a beautiful, welcoming place, surrounded by a pretty garden. The room was lovely and clean, and the food was phenomenal. We were also happily surprised by the convivial, pretty back yard beer garden when we arrived after our day long hike. Hitomi and her staff are really lovely people who made us feel so welcome. Highly recommend!
- Christien (10/5): Gastvrijheid! - We mochten hier 3 dagen verblijven.
- Celine (10/5): AMAZING!! - The most amazing stay we had during our Japan trip. Really enjoyed the serenity of the home which was just what we needed after a day on the Kumano Kodo trail. The team of hosts were so happy and amazing and catered to our needs perfectly. We also really enjoyed a wholesome evening chilling in the beer garden. Also had the healthiest and most delicious breakfast before another hiking day!
- Jan Willem (10/5): Een onvergetelijke ervaring - Het prachtige gerestaureerde Japanse interieur én de persoonlijke aandacht. Niet van toepassing
- Maria (10/5): The best place in Chikatsuyu - The location was fantastic, right at Chikatsuyu when you finish your trail walk. We were welcomed so warmly. It was an amazing feeling after a long day. The welcome drink was especially appreciated.
- Mike (10/5): Hitomi and all her staff were lovely. The food was outstanding and beautifully presented. Very tasty breakfast. - Beautiful interiors, relaxing garden with refreshments. Pastoral setting.Great opportunity to experience Japanese hosting. Bathroom was lacking.
- Kylie (8/5): Surely the best place to stay in Chikatsuyu - The room was very beautiful and the service was great. The backyard is so nice to sit in and there are English speaking staff there also if you need that. The town is picture perfect and the locals more friendly than elsewhere. The walk down to the little supermarket / restaurant area was great and the food was really good there also. We stayed at the sister accom the night before and both places are great. they really care about their guests Nothing. We liked everything. If I was going to be picky I would say I would have preferred a Japanese breakfast.
- Armanda (10/5): Merveilleux - Tout : l’accueil. Le lieu est merveilleux. Le dîner était incroyable. Le service hyper gentil. Le soin apporté à chaque chose. Impossible de trouver du négatif.
- Giri (10/5): -
- Kefu (9/5): -

- Konstantin (10/5): -
- Kennette (10/5): -
- Hans-Peter (10/5): -
- Aida (10/5): - Tot
- Jan Patrick (10/5): - Great and friendly staff who'll help you with anything you need. Breakfast and the packed lunch were very tasty. Location works well if you want to do the Kumano Kodo in 2 days. Definitely recommended! Room with toilet is a bit small.
- Laura (9/5): Super verblijf - Tijdens ons kumano kodo wandeling verbleven we op deze mooie locatie. Een mooi authentiek verblijf. Echt een aanrader!
- Vreni (10/5): Incredible service, beautiful house, and welcoming stay. - The building itself was a treat, as was its perfect location after a long day of hiking. But most importantly, the staff was incredible!!!! Hitomi was an incredible host and made me feel welcome and taken care of. Giovanni was a wonderful chef and host too ☺️ The toilets were a little bit awkward, but otherwise it was amazing!
- Mareike (10/5): - We ordered the Dinner, it was delicous! (The owner has goats, so parts of the meal came with cheese from these goats.
Also the two who worked there were friendly and helpful, if we would come back one day, we would choose this guesthouse again!
Behind the house is a beergarden and you can find the oldest cherry-tree of the prefektur in the Garden.
- Ella (10/5): Geweldig verblijf, heerlijk eten, prachtige accommodatie. - Het was geweldig van begin tot eind. Prachtige accommodatie, attent personeel en verrukkelijk eten. Niks!
- Chiara (10/5): Fantastic guesthouse along the kumano kodo - Everything was fantastic: the amazing staff we met, who took care of us the best way possible (thank you so much), delicious homemade food we ate (catering for our special requirements as well) , and beautiful home and room. Perfect stay - I would have stayed there for a week !
- karlene (10/5): - The NONAGASE was an amazing and convenient location for the Kumano to stay in. The bus stop is literally out the front !!
It was trendy, clean and there’s a bar out the back for those thirsty after a long day on the track.
I want to personally thank Hitomi for collecting me from a roadside location in 35 degree heat on the first day of the trek which was unbelievable service.
Thanks Hitomi - you are the best 😜🙏
- Jonas (10/5): -
- Pedro (10/5): Superb place with magnificently hospitable staff - Our host Hitomi (and her team) go above and beyond to define what good hospitality means. She was kind, considerate, and caring, and she is a superb cook. We had an absolutely fantastic stay after a long hike, and came out rejuvenated. The place itself is also magnificent: a knockout traditional property.
- Juan (10/5): Best stay in Japan. - Beautiful, organized, and super clean home. Well designed and felt like the ultimately restful and authentic stay in the middle of our hike. Nothing.
- Ben (10/5): -
- William (10/5): Great stay at Nonagase Guest House and super friendly staff, I highly recommend ! -
- Ashley (10/5): - Hitomi was so wonderful. She greeted us warmly and made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend ordering dinner. The dinner she cooked for us was made from local ingredients and we could feel and taste how much time and care she puts into her dishes. Hitomi is a very experienced Kumano Kodo hiker, and she even took the time to write us a personalised itinerary based on our needs. She also took some amazing photos of us in our yukatas with the beautiful house and scenery. So glad to have these nice photos to remember our stay :)
